Apple pie. Oily.
Kelly M.

Short story first: oily, deep fried, no flavor, no authenticity, salty, expensive, oily. We were driving from Delaware to Virginia and went out of our way to give this a try. Over $45 later we wish we stayed on i95. We tried the Mumbai Burger with potato bun and tater tots, Japanese Katsu Curry Bowl, and threw in a baked apple pie for dessert. Now, to enjoy this place, you must love flavorless oily salty deep fried food. The katsu, burger patty, and tater tots were deep fried. The curry had no flavor. The rice wasn't Japanese style, it was more like Uncle Ben's. And the burger patty was spicy but flavorless. Hand-grated tater tots? Oily, salty, otherwise tasteless. We hoped the apple pie would save the meal. Nope. It tasted oily as well, so I was surprised to find out it was advertised as baked. I wasn't going to do a review until I learned we spent $45 on this atrocity of a meal. So the only reason we're posting is for other people who want to spend their money on fresh REAL food, not tasteless salty oily deep fried food. Thank you for offering a pretty vegan option for people who love flavorless deep fried food. Everyone else: stay away!

Crispy Flower Bites

Sadly the quality of food has gone down at St. Veg over the years. I used to be an avid long-time customer and enjoy making the trek from McLean. Mom's Caramel Tofu was disappointing, the tofu was really stiff and hard and the rice was very clumpy. The distribution of the ingredients was a bit off and seemed to be thrown together with the tofu, spinach, and rice. The Cauliflower Bites were soggy and thrown in a bag. The No Guilt Burger was very bland. The staff member grumpily greeted me and I seemed to bother her with my take-out order. I paid $50 for 2 subpar dishes, an app, and lavender iced tea.

I've been here a handful of times and it really does not disappoint. The tater tots are quite simply the best I've ever had- my husband and both kids agree. They are perfectly cooked- crunchy on the outside, impeccably seasoned and just delish! I got the Flavor Bomb with extra chimichurri sauce- it is perfectly umami and the mushrooms just melt in your mouth- the velvety mushrooms paired with a perfect baguette crunch and the pillowy center of the bread is one I'll come back for. Sadly, there was no Pho broth for dipping, but I don't know that it needs it. I'll let you know the next time I get it. The rest of the fam got the Katsu Bowl and a meatball sub. They would go back again, but go for something different next time. My vegetarian son wants the Flavor Bomb, and my other kiddo was intrigued too. We'll be back soon.

Caramelized tofu

My husband and I are always on the lookout for a good vegetarian place. This was our first time here and he got the mumbai burger and I got the caramelized tofu with pickled vegetables. Both were really good the Mumbai Burger had just the right amount of Indian spices and the tater tots it came with were nice and crispy. The burger has hot spices too, so be prepared for a little burn. Overall it's a nice "fast food" treat. The tofu was a lot of food I ended up taking half home. The pickled veges and tofu went really well together. I'd definitely get it again. We also got the hot lavender and the lavender lemonade. They were ok, I make this at home sometimes and I feel like mine is a little better so I don't think I'd get drinks again.

Flavor Bomb Pho Dip Sandwich

I have been visiting St Veg for more than a year and I am amazed with how the quality is so consistent. It had been awhile since I enjoyed the Flavor Bomb Pho Dip Sandwich, and after the first bite I was flooded with memories of my first visit to St Veg and why I love this business so much. The service at St Veg is great! You are always greeted with warmth and for fresh made food it comes out pretty fast! St Veg takes no short cuts. Their burger patties, baguettes, tater tots, and proteins are all made in-house. While on the surface this business has a fast causal vibe, the effort put in behind the scenes is tremendous and I am impressed with how efficiently this business runs. Over the years my most purchased meals are for sure the Flavor Bomb Sandwich, Vegloaf Bowl, and the Katsu Curry Bowl. On a "treat yo self" day I get the mushroom BBQ burger because it comes with tots which are too good to not eat all in one sitting. I cannot be trusted with that side by myself. When I go to St Veg in the afternoon I get their coffee because the cashew milk they make from scratch is the best nondairy milk of all time. It makes their coffee taste so heavenly. When I am staying off the caffeine their lavender tea is something I get every visit. It has so much flavor and is the perfect refreshment any time of the year. St Veg always has plenty of seating to accomadate a solo outing or even a large group. I host a vegan meetup monthly and we have packed 20 hungry vegans in without disturbing the normal flow of customers. I am so happy St Veg exists for the vegan community and any nonvegans wanting to try a vegan meal. The food is excellent, service is way above average, and this local business is truly a gem.

9.5.23

9.5.23 I am generally a carnivore and stay away from veggies, but my friend suggested this establishment so I gave it a try. I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed my Shredded Medley banh mi which had tofu, jicama, sweet potato, bean threads, pickled daikon and carrots, cucumber slices, and cilantro. If I didn't know what was in it, I would have thought meat was in there, it was that good and deceptive. The fresh lemonade didn't taste fresh to me and I had to ask for sugar. Orders are placed at one of the two kiosks, however, staff is available for assistance, which I had to ask for. The restaurant was recognized as Best Vegan Restaurant by Bethesda Magazine in January 2022. Go check them out and see if you agree.

Love the service and the interesting menu. It was really busy, a lot of regulars and newcomers alike. Glad we checked it out. Less "vegan" vibes more Asian clean.

St.Veg Pho
Tiffany T.

I ordered the St. Veg pho and crispy egg rolls through their website and for take out. The ordering process was easy and I was glad I could see photos of the food. The St. Veg Pho was really nicely packaged, with the veggies and noodles in a tray above the broth. When dumped into the broth, it looked very filling. There was a good ratio of veggies to noodle and broth! It was all very warm, hearty, and tasty! The crispy egg rolls were also great. The sauce paired really well with the egg rolls. It seemed like a soy sauce, but was not overpowering or salty. The one thing I do wish the egg rolls had more of is taro filling. I got these because I was excited about the taro, but I couldn't really taste it. Overall, I would order from St. Veg again. There are a few more popular items on their menu that I would like to try.

Organic Pure Lavender Iced Tea, Fresh Iced Lemonade
Whitney M.

A niche restaurant that is right up my alley. So plant based with fresh ingredients. I had the Mumbai bowl and another bowl. The staff was friendly and willing to answer any questions I had. The business isn't very large so big crowds either with here. Because the food is prepared fresh so it'll take between 15-20 minutes depending on what you order. New Year's resolution to eat better? Check this place out!

Ask the Community - St. Veg

Are desserts offered here?

Yes! We have fresh baked cookies that are made with organic coconut sugar. More desserts coming soon!

I live in Frederick County and am excited to learn about this new vegan place in my neighbor county. What is the parking situation at St. Veg?

You can find parking here but it does tend to be a busy lot especially at lunch. If you park towards the back and where Safeway is that part of this lot usually has more space

Where can I see your menu?

We loved the spring rolls so much that we ended up ordering two orders of them, so between the two of us, we had four pieces each! They were just that good. For my main entrée, I ordered the Peking "duck" and it was phenomenal. Honestly, even though I've never actually had the real version, I can't imagine it tasting any better than this. The restaurant itself is really cute and comfortable, with plenty of seating in both booths and tables. The service was also great. I came to find this place through a recommendation on Reddit and after looking at the many positives reviews on yelp and google, I just knew I had to come eat here. We came here on a Saturday at 3:30 pm and the inside was empty but more people came in later on. The interior had an older timely feel and was very spacious with many table around that could hold a big party if needed. For appetizer, we ordered the steam dumplings and for the entree we had the pineapple fried rice & the crispy orange chicken with broccoli. The dumpling came out fairly quickly and tasted good. Dip that dumpling into that sauce to elevate that flavor. The pineapple fried rice portion was decent and the taste was amazing. Season perfectly and you can see the chef cooking in the back through a small window, I see him using that wok technique to give my fried rice that " wok hay smoke flavor". For the crispy chicken it was cook nicely and come with a bowl of rice. Rice mix with the sauce and eaten with the chicken was tasty. The staff were very friendly and refilled our water when it was low, very attentive to our needs. All in all, had a positive experience here and would highly recommend anyone to come and try some amazing food here atleast once.

Every single item was a 10/10, honestly. The butter chicken was so creamy and cashew based, and was easily my favorite item, though everything was fantastic. This might be the best Indian food in Maryland... I'm not shy to say that given how much I've had (though there is still plenty more to try). Applause. So one random week I decided to contact them just to inquire about their prices, flavors and such (I found this info on their website). They actually didn't respond until over a week later, and I realized it was because they were out of the country! So they let me know when they would be returning and so I contacted them again then. By some insane twist of fate, the day they said to contact them also happened to be National Donut Day -- obviously a sign. It turns out they don't have delivery right now (probably because they just returned?) so I had to arrange a pickup. They're $4 a pop, so I decided to just get half a dozen: Cinnamon Sugar Chocolate Oreo Mango Pistachio Rose Raspberry Pina Colada I arrived at the house, waited a few minutes, and the man came to the door with the donut box in hand. The hummus is very good. The babaganoush is very smokey. The falafel are the best I have found other than the world famous Maoz, I just wish they were bigger so they would stay hot and moist longer. T. $6 for 5 doesn't feel right when I could eat 20 of them so unfortunately I won't be ordering them again. The falafel are clearly labeled vegan and gluten free, as are many other items. The sauces are very good and they squirt them from bottles that dispense a generous amount. The meat unfortunately does not come right off the spit but is held in a metal bin like chipotle so they can keep the line moving, but you can see the 3 giant spits roasting away in the back. The last thing I love about this place is that you get something you simply can not make at home. Even if you make shawarma style chicken and have rice and greens, there's no way you're making hummus and babaganoush and all the sauces and then you'd also have to buy 20 ingredients for the toppings... It's the same idea as chipotle or if you know Cava, it's more like that. The price starts at $12.99 and the only thing that raises the price is if you get lamb or steak or double meat. All toppings are included. It's worth mentioning again, the hummus is very good, perhaps the best I've ever had. Not only great flavor but it's the creamiest smoothest hummus.

Beautiful tiles, love the black-and-white, crisp,…read moreclean look, and new booths -- though I didn't try sitting in one yet, didn't think to as I was on a mission to get to all the Israeli restaurants around for and on Israel Independence Day, ha ha! (And yes! I succeeded!) The benches are a light, bright-looking wood. There are also regular tables for those who prefer that .... It's amazing how much spacious seating is packed into this little place! I wish the outside reflected the new, light beauty but I guess the treasure is only to be found by those who venture in .... As an Israeli-in-America, I appreciate the selection of Israeli drinks in the cooler, and of course the national snack of falafel! Some say they don't put fries in the pitas -- well, yeah! That's true! If you don't ask, you don't receive! I ask! I receive! I do sometimes find the sandwiches to be kind of messy, so I try to sometimes get less various salads and pickles and such so it's not completely overflowing -- because this place is GENEROUS! Of course, if you're not used to kosher food, you'll probably not understand that it does cost more because for one thing (out of many!), there has to always be an 'extra' person called a mashgiach (supervisor in Hebrew) who oversees everything to make sure it's all, well, kosher! Kosher meat is more expensive, too. And yeah, meat doesn't come with dairy! So that is not available. I heard someone asking if they had a cheeseburger and had to work to not crack up about it! I LOVE the grilled eggplant bits you can get put in -- they're special, not in the regular line up, right there at the end -- because not only do they add so much flavour and texture with so little bulk, but eggplant is one of those things I usually cannot eat because it hurts my oh-so-sensitive tongue, but this place makes it per-fect-ly, mmm ... ! So delicious! I enjoy both purple and green cabbage and carrots, but I don't like the flavour of the onions. That makes me sad, because I LOVE onions, but these ones have something on them that I don't like (looks like it's sumac -- which is ironic, because that's something that I normally love and use all the time!) and I end up picking out when I sometimes forget or get hopeful and just get them again anyway .... Actually, the onions are one of the few condiments here I do not like! The pickled beets are great -- and of course, great for your liver! They are cleansing, nutritious, and boost your Russian-ness, to boot! Or your Russian Jewishness, anyway .... I know that eating them makes my grandmother proud! The benefits of eating here are not and are also not like ones you can attain in just any regular restaurant, and it's here for people who want this kind of thing. It literally is a cornerstone, being on the corner and providing the things certain of us need -- Israeliness, Jewishness, kosherness, etc. It's too bad it suffers from bad reviews by people who don't understand or care. By the way, the work that goes into making all these salad items fresh every day is, let's just say, a LOT! I almost always get the falafel -- I used to get a platter, but it was too much for a meal so I switched back to the classic pita version and that's a perfect amount for me for a meal, plus I feel it's better for the environment because it comes packaged minimally in a little parchment paper rather than a recyclable aluminum plate with a non-recyclable aluminum-and-paper top. Truth be told, I could have trouble finishing writing this review because thinking of Oh Mama Grills' falafel is making me so hungry! I am really getting in the mood for some right now! Other things I eat from here regularly (and have for years): Israeli salad Moroccan (vegetarian) cigars Rice Other things I know are great by way of seeing the delight on my eating partner's face while consuming: Okay, I so I don't remember, but various meat things! Chicken, I think .... Things I don't love from Oh Mama Grill: Bean soup -- didn't have enough flavour for me .... Sabich. I dunno. Just didn't love it! It's hard to top falafel, in my opinion -- well, this falafel from this place, that is -- so I don't feel the need to explore the menu very much .... There aren't a whole lot of places (if any!) that offer such a variety of salads, pickles, and sauces! As an absolute pickle-lover who finds pickles and not just that but a variety of pickles a MUST for my diet, this place has it going on like no other! Update! Tried sitting on a bench at a booth! It's pretty hard, not super-comfortable, but doable -- however, a harder seat is better for your posture and health long-term! The falafel pita with toppings aplenty is so delicious, I am craving one right now ... and, in case you've ever tried some of the marinated types of vegetables here and found them too sour, I did too! Now, that is fixed. They are no longer so sour, and are therefore much more eminently edible! My eating partner agrees.
