I expected a larger menu, but the kimchi butter Katsu is great so I'm glad it's featured. Two of us shared the #1 Wavy Bundle for $18.49 which includes kimchi butter Katsu (we got spicy) with rice and Mac salad, 2 pieces of bruleed spam musubi, and a fountain drink. The combo helps you save about $1-2 vs the separate items. The spicy kimchi butter Katsu had a delicious, spicy sauce. It isn't overwhelmingly spicy but has a kick. The flavor wasn't distinctly kimchi, however, so having kimchi on the side would be awesome! The Mac salad is a bit tuna-y for my taste, but it was still good. The addition of sesame seeds/furikake on the rice and chicken was appreciated. The bruleed spam musubi was tasty but nothing special. I wish the mayo was throughout. I liked that there was plenty of Shootz-only seating, both inside and on a private section of the patio, so you can definitely get a seat if the public market is busy. One of my favorite katsu sandwich shops I've been to! Lovely location in Rodeo 39 with lots of cute shops/cafes/restaurants to try. I first visited in 2021 and instantly became obsessed with the buttery, crispy, savory kimchi katsu paired with their delicious signature mac salad. I would come here super often! The sandwiches were definitely my favorite, along with their spam musubis (both the spam brulee and the honey coconut shrimp are absolutely perfect, I can't choose between the 2). The portions were very large and shareable; I would sometimes order the platter and share amongst friends. However, within the last year, the portions became significantly smaller. I don't go as often as I did before, but the food is still amazing! I would highly recommend it if you're visiting the OC area! Definitely a favorite amongst me and my friends. Kimchi Butter Katsu: This definitely strays from a traditional chicken katsu, but no complaints! The kimchi butter makes the katsu so flavorful, so you don't need to eat it with any sauce. I'm pretty weak with spice, but I get the spicy and I would say it's equivalent to a mild or maybeeee medium spice. I also love this dish because oftentimes eating katsu makes me feel pretty gross after LOL but this one is perfect. Spam Brulee Musubi: These are topped with kimchi aioli that's then bruleed. I love the extra flavor the aioli gives and the crunch from the brulee. My only complaint with these is that there's a bit too much sauce for my liking, but I think that's more of a personal preference thing. If you come here on a weekend or when Rodeo39 is hosting a market, definitely expect a LONGGG LINE. Luckily the food comes out pretty quickly once you order, but I recommend ordering online to avoid the wait for the register. What I'm knocking off stars feels even small to me, but is at the same time, a difference maker of whether I come back and order that same item. --- My main and only criticism is the food feels extremely unbalanced. It's bread/fried chicken/mac salad + spam musubi with some creamy house sauce on it. I was dying to have some sort of bright/acidic component. Could have been pickled red onions, pickles, a slaw, something anything. I see some other reviews where they felt it was balanced with their drink, but the drink I chose was Coco water, which is just sweet. So it felt a little tough to savor the meal without a means to refresh the palate. The shrimp was so crispy and had so much flavor with the kimchi butter. The Spam Brûlée was also delicious and loved the sauce with it. Cool take on Hawaiian food! I got to try the Kimchi Butter Katsu Chicken and the Mixed Plate. The chicken and the shrimp came out very crispy with this rich, buttery flavor. The kimchi flavoring was subtle and faint but it still shined through. Sadly, I didn't really enjoy the mac salad though since it was a bit bland and too creamy for my taste. I also just wished the meal came with a sauce to balance the richness since it felt pretty heavy after a while. On a different note, I also tried the Spam Brulee Musubi and thought it was a pretty unique take on the traditional spam musubi. I really wanted to love this joint, but I think the taste and value of their food is just okay (and in contrast to other Hawaiian-inspired places, the portions here are not super generous). Their staff has always been wonderful. I've tried the katsu sandwich, katsu plate, and jalapeño garlic shrimp (on three diff occasions). The sandwich wasn't that impressive to me - it tasted like a slightly oily chicken cutlet sandwich with mac salad. I think my expectations were too high based on pictures and hype. As for the katsu plate, I made the mistake of asking for more mac salad, less rice (I had opted for this cuz I love the former). I didn't realize the mac salad had tuna (cuz the note on the menu is kinda small), so I wasn't prepared for the seafood flavor, which I didn't love. I think it would've benefited from an acidic element to brighten it, such as pickle juice or vinegar or something - it's creamy, but very one note in flavor. I tried the shrimp plate cuz people raved about how flavorful it is. At the same time, recent reviewers have complained about how salty it is, which made me worry. I decided to eat the plate at the establishment just in case it was too salty and I had to return it. Luckily, that didn't happen, and I'm glad I ate it ASAP cuz the shrimp coating would've gotten soggy by the time I got home. The mac salad tasted less seafood-y this time, so I enjoyed it more. I visited Rodeo 39 on a Sunday evening for dinner, and there was no line at Shootz, though the cashier did mention that it was unusually quiet at the moment, so I imagine that this place can get pretty busy. After I placed my order, it took around 10-15 minutes to get it, so I didn't have to wait very long. You can get the Hot Kimchi Butter Katsu Chicken Sandwich either spicy or non-spicy. I opted for the spicy after the worker told me it's like a "hot cheeto" level spicy. And I'd say that was pretty accurate! It had a nice kick to it but was overall very enjoyable. The katsu was very crunch on the outside but the chicken inside was moist and flavorful. You could definitely taste all the butter in the sandwich. I'd say it was a touch too much for me personally, but it was very tasty so I think most people would really enjoy it. The mac salad in the sandwich is also very good too, and the creaminess balances out the spiciness of the chicken nicely. The size of the sandwich was good enough to satisfy me, but it is on the smaller end, so some people might need a little more food than that to be full. Was exploring Rodeo 39 with a friend, and we decided to try out all kinds of stuff from all the different places, so we came across Shootz and their Spam Brulee Musubi. It's definitely not the healthiest but it just tastes so good and I completely devoured it;;; the creamy spicy mayo with the spam+seaweed+rice bringing it all together is just the cherry on top. There is also a subtle sweetness and crunchiness from the brulee. Do wish there were more greens (?) to kinda balance it out because it is a tad bit greasy and salty, but ig they do have the green onions and it's not necessarily like a full-on meal, more of a bite. Where do I start? Their menu covers the classic Hawaiian foods but with a fun fusion twist. I would say all these items are the definition of comfort food and can even take you back to the island if you close your eyes and imagine the peaceful, serene beach while you enjoy this good food. Kimchi Butter Katsu Chicken Sandwich: I'm a huge fan of chicken sandos so I was ecstatic about this one. The buttery flavor definitely comes through in the crispy chicken but the spicy definitely did not which I was sad about. The mac salad is a great topping though with hot and cold combo. Jalapeño Garlic Shrimp Plate: I really wanted the loco moco plate but this one seemed more popular so I went with it. The seasoning on these shrimps were crazy. It was generously coated and again, the mac salad was insanely good! Short Ribs Plate: How could you see this on the menu and not order it? Is it pricey, yes. Is it worth it though, also yes. These were tender, meaty pieces of short ribs sitting on a bed of rice. Spam Brulee Musubi: The better of the two musubis. It was so saucy and the sweet sauce paired nicely with the salty slice of spam inside. Honey Coconut Shrimp Musubi: This one had a lot of potential but the shrimp I got inside was unfortunately mostly batter. That said, the sauce saved some of it but it could have been better. Strawberry Pineapple Lemonade: I don't have a huge sweet tooth, so this was too sweet for me. That said, it can help quench your thirst if you're looking for something refreshing. The service was really great despite it being packed and apologized in advance for the wait time for the food to be cooked. Recently took a visit to Rodeo 39 and so many places caught my eye but decided to first try out Shootz Hawaiian. So many delicious choices! I decided on their Kimchi Butter Katsu Chicken. it comes with two scoops of rice and a scoop of their mac salad that actually has tuna mixed in. Along with this Katsu chicken, I made it a combo and chose their Honey Coconut Shrimp Musubi and a strawberry Pineapple lemonade. Let me tell you that this place is a winner! The katsu was perfectly fried and crunchy on the outside but on the inside was wonderfully moist! The kimchi butter flavor had a nice hint of kimchi buttery flavor, which made it even more tasty! I didn't eat the Honey Coconut Shrimp musubi as my son is the one that wanted it. He said it was definitely a winner and had a good amount of flavor and hopes to get it again next time. The strawberry Pineapple lemonade had a nice mixture of the strawberry and pineapple and it wasn't overly sweet or tart. It all balanced out well and liked it so much we ended up getting a refill. BTW, if you get a refill on their juices, its $1 for a refill but there isn't a charge on refills for sodas. All in all we thoroughly enjoyed the food at Shootz and would love to come back if in the area.
