Last time I stopped by Shoe Tree Brewing was about this time last year. And dang, I regret having waited so long in coming back. When they first opened, I was impressed with what they were trying to do, yet found only a couple things I really liked. Now though, they have made a very solid core beer selection, yet still with a lot of interesting and experimental selections to try.
They are located adjacent to Carson Hot Springs, which is a cool bonus, and gives you an excuse to make a holiday out of your visit. Parking is very plentiful and easy to get into, just be watchful for any parking signage. Walking through the door into their small, cozy taproom, you are greeted by the very friendly staff, and they direct your attention to the menu chalked up on the wall. Find a seat either inside or out on the patio, and you can settle in for a good drinking experience. You can even bring your four-legged friends, as they are very pet-friendly here!
I got to try a fair selection of their beers, starting out with the West Coast Randy, a very smooth and enjoyable 6.9% IPA. Followed that up with the Ash Canyon Amber, which I found very nice as well. Setting down the pint glasses, I went for a few tasters, an was very impressed with the range of styles and flavors. The Fuzzy Lemon, a sour NE IPA, is yummy with a great citrus taste. A pretty good Berlinerweiss to try is the Cherry Godmother, which is very mildly sour and with plenty of fruit flavor. The Margarita Gose, brewed specially for Cinco de Mayo, is interesting, and has an almost soda-esque quality to it. But the absolute must-try beer on tap is the Shoe Horn DIPA. I am so used to most double and triple IPAs being too sweet or losing the bitterness, bordering on being barley wine. But not here. The Shoe Horn drinks like any normal, but flavorful, IPA, yet at 9.2% will take those shoes and kick you if you're not careful. If you are forgoing beer for whatever reason, fear not, as they also have a couple of house-made sodas and cold brew coffee available.
The prices here are all very inexpensive for the quality, and one thing Shoe Tree brewing does here I really like is that they have multiple sizes available for all their beers on tap. You can go with a taster-sized glass, or get a four ounce, an eight ounce, and so on up to full sized pints and snifters. Prices vary by beer type and size, so be sure to scope out their very useful pricing matrix hung up behind the bar. Growler fills are available for most everything on tap, in both standard 64 ounce sizes and the smaller 32 ounce growlers, but no crowlers. Cans are also available for a few of their beers, most notably the Shoe Horn. If you are hungry, there are a few snacks available for purchase, or you can order from Sassafras, the restaurant next door, right from the bar. Another advantage to being on the hot springs resort.
I have to say that with Shoe Tree Brewing in town, this for sure should put our state capital on the map for anyone searching for unique and delicious brews in the eastern Sierras, and that they are strong proof that the beer scene in northern Nevada is spreading to more and more communities. I am very much looking forward to the next time I can stop by and seeing what else they are brewing up.
