Besides the well curated wine selection, Troy has a wonderful selection of spirits and craft beers. Not only will he help you find the perfect pairing for a meal or that "just right " gift, but he hosts lively tastings for a reasonable price so you can try several libations before making a decision. So, there I was, unable to attend the Frey Event in which Colby and Ashley Frey were coming to Battle Born in Gardnerville for a an event.... Dang, it would have been nice to see them, but it couldn't happen. You see, I had pre-paid for a bottle of Barrel Strength, Single Barrel, Straight Bourbon Whiskey coming in at 129.18 Proof, and I was interested in tasting it...and being a part of the event, but.... I go down a few days later, and I get to have my own little private event. Troy asks me to sign the barrel that the spirit had been aged in, as it was still sitting in his store (be sure and check out the picture that I posted, it's got a lot of signatures on it), and he had me sign it like I was there on the original night. He then handed me my autographed bottle. That is what customer service looks like. Customer service reigns here, and, yes, you are in Gardnerville, NV. Customer service is dying, yet it's alive if you know where to look. Imagine that, a business owner takes care of his customers that can't attend the night of the event, and they get their own little moment of thoughtfulness. Small Town, good customer service, small business still exists, even in the middle of this pandemic. It's worth the visit to help these folks.

I distinctly remember the first time I heard the words "Battle Born Wine" and the distant and fabled town of Gardnerville. On cold, windy night, a group of old and newly acquainted friends sat huddled around a makeshift fire ring on a beach at Pyramid Lake. It was Memorial Day Weekend, and no one had anywhere to be but there. Beverages were flowing and fueling the conversation, and though we'd all been together on the beach for almost a day, it would seem that some had yet to be introduced to each other. It was about that time that I met Troy. He was blathering on about his love for wine and throwing in tidbits about spirits and craft beer (which was in its infancy in the city at the time). I listened intently, and quickly realized this guy knew what he was talking about AND that I had much to learn. I asked him why he seemed to know so much, and he told me owned a specialty wine and spirits shop in Gardnerville called Battle Born Wine. At first, I chuckled. Gardnerville. Then I remembered looking at real estate in that area and recalled the kind of money you've gotta have in the bank to live there, and it all made sense. To think that meeting was about 8 years ago, and Troy and I have stayed connected since. In that time he has proven to be an epic resource, and someone I continue to learn from at every opportunity. It took me nearly that many years to actually make it into the shop, but when I did, I wasn't disappointed in the least. The shelves behind the register are lined with his personal collection of rare and interesting spirits. They range across categories and spectrums, and nearly all of them are open! Troy seems to have tasted every bottle in the shop and can speak from an educated perspective about all of them. He's a wealth of knowledge and he will not steer you wrong. A chance meeting on a cold night out at Pyramid Lake more than 8 years ago turned me on to one of the best wine and spirits spots in all of Northern Nevada. As they say, here's to the nights we'll never remember and the friends we'll never forget.

So I take a break from fishing Lee Vining Creek and take a drive to hunt another elusive creature, Amer Picon. I've only had Torani Amer and wanted to try the real stuff and I was an hour or so from NV...road trip! I stopped in to Battle Born to see if I could find any sort of Amer Picon. I scored on a Golden Moon which saved me a trip to Colorado. Also picked up a Frey Ranch straight rye(wish I would have bought a case) and a couple others. The selection at BBW blew me away but what was even more impressive was the service and knowledge from the gentleman behind the counter. He had excellent recommendations and just an overall great attitude. I can't wait to go back to pick up some more Frey Ranch...it's just sucks that it's a 7.5hr drive buts it's so worth it!

When I checked it out, the cashier quickly removed it from the box and then put it back in. I figured this was a standard procedure. When I got to my mom's five minutes later, we opened it and saw that there was a slit around part of the capsule. It was done so that the top of the capsule could hinge up, and the cork stopper could be removed, and everything could be pressed down and look "normal." We took it back immediately, within fifteen minutes of purchase. The cashier- an older man with a gray beard and strong attitude- accused us of making the slit ourselves and insisted he had shown me the bottle before purchase. While he had taken it in and out of the box, he did not demonstrate to me that the capsule was not tampered with. I'm not sure if the store purchased this from a wholesaler who is selling them forged goods, or whether this is happening in store, or they accepted a returned and tampered bottle. But they refused to exchange it for us, and were aggressive and rude. We have been loyal customers for years, and do not plan to return again.

However, I feel like my experience was actually really great because I don't have that context or comparison in the back of my head. The menu is on the smaller side, but I think that just allows them to specialize in the items they do offer. I got a tuna sandwich, which I don't usually eat, but loved it here! The mayo was well spread throughout the tuna and again on the bread. It was hearty and filling, which is exactly what I was looking for. Friends got a turkey club, and they both said it blew them away. No one left any crumbs. The inside if the market was well-stocked with fun ingredients and items that make time pass quickly as you wait for your food. Water, hot sauces, and napkins are all ample and provided both inside and outside. Pricing is reasonable; coming from the Bay Area, you can end up paying way more for way less, but here, I felt like we paid the right amount for the right thing. Would come again when visiting this area!
