Buy the Sea - Market and restaurant

Ever had a hankering for some fresh fish and chips? Well, we were driving through West Kelowna and…read morefound "Buy the Sea," which surprised us with a menu that not only included fish and chips, but lots of fresh seafood to take home as well. The small restaurant/market offered different kinds of fish and chips at different price points. There was Cod, Haddock, Halibut, Prawns and Oysters, and we chose to split the Haddock and chips, with extra coleslaw and tartar sauce. The Haddock arrived quickly and hot, with a piece for each of us, and a handful of fries - even for a split dish, there were really large portions. The fish was perfectly fried, and inside, tender and melted in my mouth. The chips were crispy, and I enjoyed dipping them in both the ketchup and tartar. They also provided both white and malt vinegar which I appreciated. After lunch, we perused the market area and saw there were giant crab legs, octopus, lots of fresh fish, poke, smoked fish and crab. I had my eye on the sushi-grade Ahi which I will take home next time to make my own sushi. There were also jars of sauces and dressings, and I spied ghost pepper sauce for the next time I need a good flavor boost. The prices were reasonable, and everything seemed fresh and clean. Looking forward to returning!

Both were done beuatifully. If you have a hankering for reasonably priced, quick, fish and chips, and can't bear the thought of driving over that bridge again, this is the place for you! Do note: it closes at 7:00, so not for late night snacking!

Cuisine: 7 Service: 4…read moreDecor: 6 Value: 6 Overall: 6 The fried fish batter was pretty good, though I would prefer it to be a bit more airy rather than so hard. It felt even thicker and less desirable on the prawns. However, overall, it was okay. The seasoning on the fish was light, barely noticeable. With that said, dipping it into the addicting tartar sauce made it more enjoyable. We liked the sauce so much that we ordered a few more at $.50 each. Between the two fish options, I love the tenderness of the cod, but really liked the meatiness of the halibut. The prawns were not very good imho. The chips were crispy and quite good, but the New England Clam Chowder needed more clam flavor. Service was a bit odd. The Korean lady starts off by saying that they don't serve parties larger than four, but will make an exception, though there was a round table clearly large enough. A party of five came later and they had to split up. Why couldn't she simply add a chair for them at the rectangular table for four? Furthermore, she told us that "It's not dim sum." Guess she is telling us to order enough food and don't share one or two items between us because we are Chinese? We certainly took some offense to that comment. Towards the latter part of the meal, she got somewhat friendlier. Not as amazing as I had hoped from seeing the Google and Yelp reviews, but still one of the better casual eateries out here if you don't mind some "interesting" conversation with the owner.

We all loved the fries while my wife and I also enjoyed the apple-coleslaw. Best of all was the fish. My wife and I really enjoyed our two pieces of cod which was more than enough for each of us. The 6yo loved his one piece of halibut. Each basket came with a bit of fruit and some pickle slices, which is rare in the states. Service was great and they took care of everything. They wouldn't let me clean up the table.
