The donuts are really good if you come in the morning when they're made fresh! The donuts came out fairly quick.

O Muse! Sing in me, and through me tell the story of that man skilled in all the ways of contending, a wanderer, harried for years on end .... in pursuit of a boudin kolache. I wouldn't necessarily say I "suffer" from dumb bitch disease - I enjoy every minute of it. But it was dumb bitch disease and a nice coupon working in tandem that brought me to this kiosk of Shipleys in the tunnels under 1001 McKinney. Nice surprise: boudin kolache. Not so nice surprise: errrything else. The Museum District Shipleys is my "home" Shipleys where the Big Earls are always in stock and you can be grimly harassed by the street people types camped under the Wheeler spur that spill into the parking lot to ruin your morning. You know they are street people types because they are angry and demand money from you. The entrepreneurial homeless types trying to get their lives back together are willing to put in work, with an alternative use of their mouths or otherwise, to earn your money like hitchhikers used to do back in the 70s when America was truly great out on the interstate. But still even with the Big Earls there they never had boudin kolache in stock - something of "my unicorn" I have been chasing throughout #hTownHoldItDine and #hTownTillWeDrown for years. So this kiosk had boudin kolache in stock. Well, take me to there, sister. I have heard of this thing for years and here it is finally. Also for comparison they had the Big Earl so in the parlance of my man E-40, when they are selling that girl you may as well buy. This location's Big Earl was a nightmare. The size was incredibly wrong to begin with. She is called Big Earl for a reason fellas. Look at the photos from the Museum District location - that thing is ENORMOUS. This was smol bean here. Like I even compared size to boudin kolache and the boudin was bigger! The name BIG is in only one of those items. This kiosk makes me think this was a gang thing or soundcloud rapper thing where the nickname is ironic - like calling a tall guy Lil Marco, or calling a sumo wrestler The Gashlycrumb Tiny. The cheese was a rubbery disappointing lump, a failure pile of sadness indeed. The "cut corners" preparation of the kolache bread itself shown through how the bread had become transparent with grease and barely able to contain the guts of the rubbery cheese, the jalapeño, and the questionable sausage - Big Earl would be loading up his six shooters getting angry that this was every tunnel person's experience with Big Earl's meat, rather than the Museum District one that really brings the truth and authenticity to Big Earl's wieners buried deep in nice pillowy kolache bread. But not this location. The boudin kolache was large and in charge, but largely unsatisfying. If this is what meeting your heroes is like, I see why that TV show on the NBC failed because this failed to blow up my skirt - but like any unicorn of yours you must chase it, harried for years on end, until you can put your mouth on it. This was mostly rice. Too much rice in fact. What is this, a kolache for a wedding? While everyone else is living in 2019 throwing actual rice at weddings, you can live in 3019 by buying one of these and chucking it at the groom (Dean) or the groom (Castiel) or the moose. Sure, it is in the tunnels so it is convenient when you are already downtown and not in the mood to drive over to the Museum District. Just keep in mind this kiosk has nothing on other Shipley locations that pay more time and attention to preparation of normative breakfast wares that tickle you in all of the right places when in soulful mood for nice kolache and seeking Big Earl's spirit deep inside of you at the bewitching time of #real #breakfast #hours.

Boudin Kolache!!

Favorite Shipleys, staff is fast and donuts are always fresh! Lines move really quickly despite being under tunnels with hundreds of people .

Tried the chocolate glazed donut with nuts-- unique flavor combo but flavor can be better. The chocolate wasn't too sweet which I liked but it was a very thin layer of it. The nuts were an interesting pairing. I wish it was more toasted to bring another depth to the flavor

Very interesting texture in the donut. I mean it has a different kind of fluffiness to it then I have ever tasted. Its like foamy fluff. But its not bad. Shipley Donuts are pretty good. I just had the plain donut. Definitely have to try other ones. They have line up everyday. Also they are located in the tunnel I don't think they are located elsewhere other than Texas. Whoops I was wrong they are located in other places too. Cool will try it at other locations when I go visit them

The barista was very nice and helpful. She explained that their coffee is already strong and offered to do a lighter caramel drizzle, which I appreciated. I usually avoid iced coffee because it can taste watered down to me, but I figured a blended drink might be different. Unfortunately, when I took my first sip, it still tasted watery and not as strong as I was hoping for. I think it may have just needed more coffee flavor overall, so I was a little disappointed with the drink itself. The space was nice, though. It had couches, seating throughout, and enough room for small groups to sit and hang out. Overall, the barista was kind and tried to be helpful, but the drink just was not executed the way I had hoped. I probably would not make a special trip back, especially since it is downtown, but I did appreciate the atmosphere and the customer service.

Unfortunately, I left incredibly disappointed!!! While sitting inside, I saw a man who appeared to be experiencing homelessness politely ask a customer outside if they would buy him something to eat because he was hungry. The customer said no, and the man walked away. I didn't witness any harassment or confrontation. I decided to offer to buy him something myself. He said yes, so I went inside and ordered him a croissant and water. The employee at the register initially told me they weren't supposed to sell food if it was being purchased for someone experiencing homelessness. After I explained that I had already offered, she agreed to process the purchase "this time." After I gave him the food, the owner Frédérick Fortin approached me. He told me that this man had been coming around for several days and was "harassing customers" by asking them for food. He explained that it was frustrating from a business perspective because customers come and go and when they do this he is left to deal with the situation!!!! I told him I understood his concern, but what I personally witnessed was someone politely asking one person for food, being told no, and walking away. I made my own choice to help him. What I found most upsetting was being made to feel that I had done something wrong by purchasing something with my own money and choosing to give it to someone else. Once I purchase something, I should be able to decide what I do with it! I also explained that I had come to this shop because it was highly recommended to me. When I expressed my disappointment, the owner's response was essentially that if I didn't like his business, I didn't have to be there. So I left!!! I believe businesses can have boundaries while still treating people with empathy, respect, and kindness. Those are values I personally choose to support, and a business that doesn't reflect them is a business I'm not interested in supporting! Deff not coming back!!!

I love that Tout Suite makes several tasty vegan baked goods along with their full selection of regular treats which can be hard to find in Houston (their vegan brookie - brownie/cookie - is my favorite). Outside of baked goods, Tout Suite has a large selection of breakfast items, soups, sandwiches, bowls, and appetizers with several gluten free, vegetarian and vegan options. This location has a fairly spacious interior to sit and work or enjoy a bite to eat and is just a block off of the MetroRail red line (Bell Station stop). They also have rotating daily specials and half off of cocktails every day after 5pm for happy hour ($4 espresso martini, yes please!) Ok, sounds great, right? Since I used to frequent their EaDo location quite a bit, I have several gift cards that I have collected over the years. These were purchased online on their website however when I tried to use them at this location, they said that I could not. They have three locations under their brand - Tout Suite (the former EaDo and Trebly) and Sweet, however apparently each has a separate payment system from Square to Toast, etc and they do not overlap. The gentleman behind the counter did offer to make me a complementary beverage for the inconvenience but this was definitely disappointing. I recall specifically that there was not an option to select the location when purchasing the gift cards online.

Anyway, I finally got a chance to stop by on a Sunday late morning recently. Parking can be difficult, but there are dedicated Koffeteria spots in front of the business as well as surrounding paid curbside parking. I believe Instagram helped many others discover this business recently, as it was pretty packed and there was a line, but this gave us ample opportunity to peruse the menu and pastry display. Ultimately, we opted for the: Cambodian iced coffee (kayfe dahkoh) made with sweetened condensed milk and evaporated milk - tasted very similar but weaker than Vietnamese coffee. As I'm Viet and have never had Cambodian coffee, this was my only frame of reference, and I didn't love it. I'm excited to try more Cambodian coffees to get a better understanding of their unique flavor profile! Black sesame mochi - sweet and perfectly sesame flavored with salted yolk at the bottom, delicious, my partner's favorite pastry Beef pho kolache - the bun was so soft and complemented the soft but flavorful brisket meat. wow. truly a brisket pho in a kolache. We got extremely lucky and got a table almost immediately after ordering, as someone left just in time. The interior is full of vintage furniture, which added so much character. As a vintage lover, I felt so at home! I could see how others might prefer a more neat, chic interior, but to me this was absolutely perfect and added so much warmth, homeliness, and character to the shop. Absolutely love this coffee shop and will 100% be back to try more pastries and coffees. Immediately, this has become a new Houston favorite!
