Kolaches are a Houston staple! Ever since I was a kid I loved to come here to get a kolaches. My favorite has always been the bacon and cheese. And honestly that's really the only one that I 100% love. For me, the other protein options are not as delicious as the bacon. Most of them are ground up, and textually it doesn't do it for me. I normally love eggs, but the eggs inside the kolaches are very dry.... And for that reason, I really just stick with the bacon and cheese. These kolaches are not gourmet by any means. OMG! I just at tried the Pumpkin Cream Muffin, the Flavor of the Month. It is so delectable. It was still warm and soft fresh from the oven, and melts in your mouth. I will choose the Pumpkin Cream Muffin with a plain drip coffee (especially Katz's Pecan coffee) over a Pumpkin Spice latte any day. The server proceeded to give me 6 bags of Kolaches and I asked that they be put into boxes - she stated that she wrote the types of Kolaches on the bags, but I still asked for boxes. She then frowned at me and put 4 bags into one big box and then gave me the box and 2 bags with 6 Kolaches. I asked for a box and she gave me one and I then put the 6 kolaches into the second box and left. This woman had an attitude and they had plenty of boxes. You may wonder why I gave a two-star review vs. a one-star review. The reason is that this woman saved me a $8-10 tip. So I upped the rating to a "2". Ok, so coming from the NY and Bay Areas I'm a little biased when it comes to pastries. There really is nothing like SF sourdough, and NY bagel, or East Coast pastries of any kind. That being said, I was still really disappointed by the kolaches. People had raves about them in Houston, and the chain's multiple franchises locations seemed evident of popularity usually fueled by quality. However, my kolache experience was sub par. I had the cherry kolache, and it was one of the worst pastries I've ever had (and I have such a sweet tooth I will eat anything). The dough was dense and flavorless, and tasted more like actual sandwich bread than a sweet dough. The filling tasted like a cheap cherry pie filling out of a can. I ate one bite of it before deciding that it wasn't worth the calories. read more

Kolache factory provides exactly what you think it does. It's a no-nonsense, we-know-you-came-here-for-the-kolaches kind of deal. Your standard kolaches are there: sausage and egg, and enchilada are two of my favorite. For certain selections, you can also choose between white or wheat bread. Additionally, they also do a kolache of the month. They are hit-or-miss, but from what I remember, their Thanksigivng-themed kolache was awesome. Not a complaint about the food but the service was slow. The guy who took our order and was packing the food, was either clueless or just didn't care. He put the cinnamon rolls in the brown paper bag without covering with wax paper first and all of the icing stuck all on the inside of the bag. These are definitely the BEST kolaches! We have eaten them everywhere - all over Texas in "authentic" mom & pop bakeries to fancy "gourmet" shops. This dough is better and can hold the fillings without getting soggy. Our go-to is the Sausage & Cheese. (And they use real cheese. I'm grossed out by all the kolache shops that use slimy American type slices!) My high school son is a fan of the Texas Hot & Pizza. The various egg kolaches are good too. The special order dinner rolls are really tasty!And you can't beat the Katz coffee. Forget Starbucks, come here for your cup of Joe. The Hill Country Pecan is my favorite. In full disclosure, we are not fans of the fruit kolaches or the other sweet items. The cinnamon twists are the best sugary option. This is definitely the best Kolache Factory location! It was my first time in Houston and first time having Kolache. Despite the best efforts by my friends, I couldn't understand what a kolache actually is until I was looking at the beautiful buns in the dishes. We ordered egg and cheese, and potato and cheese kolache. The staff was very courteous and took time to help us chose. Good thing we registered with their e-program and received a 50% off; 6 kolache with two coffees for $10. Kolache were tender, fresh, warm and tasted great. Nice clean place to enjoy the breakfast with multiple flavours of coffee. I'm from California, and it was my first time hearing this foreign word "KOLACHE" when my Texan friend recommended a visit to Kolache Factory sometime. I was immediately lured by the exoticness of the word, and since I'm always up for a good adventure, another friend and I set off on a walk to Kolache Factory, or what later became known as FREAKIN BLISS. What the hell am I talking about? Oh, well, y'know, the bliss of sinking my teeth into the soft, chewy bread, and savoring the tang of the peaches of the Fruit kolache, the sweet pecans of the Sticky Bun, and the breathtaking warmth of the cheese and peppered chicken in Italian Chicken. AND to top it all off, everything was half-priced because we went in 30 minutes before closing time! (Tip of the day: Come to Kolache Factory between 1:30pm and 2:00pm to snag some good deals and some good noms. Trust me.) Since it was my first time there, it wouldn't be wrong to say that my excitement of this being a first muddled my judgment of the food, but I know F'SHO I'll be returning again sometime soon. My current newbie status doesn't qualify me to make any reliable recommendations yet, but both my friend and I fell in love with the Italian Chicken (AND on the Kolache Factory website, it's listed under "Healthy Dining Choices" too! Cha-chinggg). I personally adored the simplicity of the Fruit kolache as well, and they also have a variety of different fruit flavors too. I got peach this time, and it was finger-lickin' good, but I'll set out to try the other ones too. Kolache Factory kolaches are different than the kolaches you get at Shipley's because the meat is diced. So, it's not going to be like a pig in a blanket - it's going to be like a cream puff but instead of cream you'll have diced sausage or diced ham. This place is delicious. Not quite as good as some of the places west of town but an excellent choice. The only thing I would recommend against would be their kolaches that are smaller and rounder in shape. I prefer the oblong ones. The sweet ones and the jalapeño ones are good. Kolaches fall into that line of food items that are easy to eat on the go (empanadas, turnovers, etc), but for some reason have a special place in my heart. If you want to impress your coworkers, bring it kolaches during the week instead of tired old donuts. The hot sausage or egg, bacon, and cheese are my personal favorites. However, don't forget to try traditional specialties like poppyseed or apple because they're also wonderful. I am an UBER driver and I visit Kolache Factory restaurants throughout the city for the great Katz coffee and of course the Ranchero. We have to plan our pit stops. All the stores I visit have really clean restrooms. I was excited to try the Kolache of the month but they ran out of the mild coffee. It was still early and I know it is a lot of coffee to make for one cup. I expressed my disappointment and Geli one of the sweet ladies offered to make a fresh pot and I said, no way. She said she will make a new pot. I told her she would get in trouble and she said someone will drink it and she insisted. It was awesome with my Kolache fix of the day. The kolaches are nothing stunning or anything like some of the places you can find elsewhere in Texas, but they will suffice as you make your morning commute. To start off, the sheer number of different types of kolaches was more than overwhelming for a poor soul such as myself nursing a mild but not debilitating hangover on a Sunday morning. As such, I decided to hedge my bet and get a couple of the classics (cheese, jalapeno, sausage) and one of the more adventurous options (chicken enchilada). As far as the classics, I enjoy jalapenos, and these jalapenos were not overly spicy, but there were entirely far too many of them for me. The chicken enchilada was actually exactly as advertised and tasted exactly like an enchilada, only something I decided I wasn't entirely ready for that early in the morning.
