That said, you have to be careful with packaged frozen seafood. Unless you know exactly what it is…read moreand how to cook it, do not just trust your eyes. Do not assume that something will have the same taste and texture as what you remember from hometown just because it looks similar. I once bought frozen razor clams that turned out to be chewy, smelly, and almost impossible to chew. Another time, I bought a bag of frozen green mussels. They had exactly the same shape and color as the ones I usually bought from Chinese markets, but they were not cooked. Once defrosted, they practically melted into water. Vietnamese markets also sell many kinds of fish by weight. Most of them are good, but you need real experience when buying raw seafood. Otherwise, it is very easy to waste money. Thuan Phat is a typical Vietnamese market in this sense. You can get most of the ingredients a Chinese family needs. Their fried or dried pork skin is actually much better than what I have found in most Chinese grocery stores. But again, only buy what you know. You need to know the quality, and you need to know how to process it. This Thuan Phat also has several tanks and a full seafood counter for live seafood, including crabs, tilapia, and other fish. The prices are lower than at many Chinese markets, and honestly, the quality is not bad at all.

I am no stranger to Thuan Phat El Monte Superstore. I have been here many times in previous years…read more It is a huge Asian supermarket comparable to other Asian supermarkets such as 99 Ranch, San Gabriel Superstore, GW or Great Wall Supermarket, etc. Free parking is plenty in the front and back of the store. There are individual merchandise and food vendors along the front inside of store. They carry many different international dry goods, perishable food items, fresh produce, meat and seafood, frozen items, and so much more. You can spend hours shopping here. Most recently, my Mom and I came to checkout the sugarcane juice vendor. We got ourselves one large cup with ice for $7. It is $12 if you want no ice. You have to pay more money if you want all juice. Sugarcane juice tasted refreshing and sweet. I would get it again with no ice next time. I may just bring my own ice or drink it as is.

Having gone to mitsuwa and Tokyo central countless times, Tozai really hits the spot when it comes to affordable Japanese food that actually tastes good. My only complaint is that their rice seems a bit overcooked. It's too mushy for my liking. Teriyaki chicken - extremely generous with the rice. The teriyaki chicken actually has a char taste to it which adds so much flavor to the chicken. There isn't too much teriyaki sauce, which I like. Tempura bento - really loved the tempura in here. Everything was fried just right. The batter is crispy and light. It's not greasy at all. The side dishes were delicious. The fried wontons were good but the fried shumai had a bit of a porky taste to it. California rolls - probably the best I've had in a Japanese market. The rice actually has a slight vinegar taste to it, which is lacking at other places. Croquette - it's meatless but still so good. It's potato only but has an occasional cheesy fragrance to it. Definitely coming back again for the food

I would come back if I wanted something really quick. But I think I would still suck with Yama it I have time.

Great Wall Supermarket is located on the corner of San Gabriel Blvd and Garvey and is in the same…read moreplaza with a dozen other businesses. The parking lot is huge but still seems inadequate for the number of cars/patrons in the area. The GW Supermarket is "open" so there's no walls separating market from other business stalls. The area has a bakery, trinket shops and a food court that well liked by customers. I see streams of people weekdays and weekends. What I liked was finding some special edition Yeo Chrysanthemum drinks linking to Chinese New Year (very cute) and sales on lucky red envelopes. The Great Wall is smaller than other Asian supermarkets in the area, which makes everything feel really cramped and crowded. The aisle is tight so movement with two - three carts can be challenging. The selection of variety of anything is limited so I can see the lower-than-normal rating. Overall, GW calls the basics and gives the community another market option rather than driving further into SGV.

I dropped by for some meat, green onions and bean sprouts. I checked out and asked to purchase a bag since I have a tiny tote only. I paid with my ebt card and then the lady said I owe her 0.20 cents for the bag before she will give me one. I did not have change and handed her a $5 and she won't take it or give me a bag. So after staring at each other, I just had put the meat in my tote and carried the other two items. So make sure you have exact change if you want bags....or remember to bring your own. I need to remember as I am super forgetful.
