We used to come here a few times per month, often once weekly. Prices were raised consistently to the point that we could actually spend less at other sushi establishments closer to home (i.e. downtown Bend) and get higher quality sushi and a better dining experience. After the remodel, prices went way up and quality and service went way down. The last time we went, the restaurant was basically empty and from the moment we sat down and received our order, an hour had elapsed. They took 15-20 minutes to take our order, employees were sitting around chitchatting at the bar. On top of this, when the order came out the sushi rice was crunchy and employees were nonexistent. No service whatsoever. Really a shame. We used to love this place and would likely not return here after trying to give them a few chances and spending too much of our hard-earned money for a subpar experience. This place is already a drive out of our way but we made the trip because in the past, staff was friendly, attentive and the food was consistent, tasty, and reasonably priced. read more

I have been here a couple times before, it was always delicious but this time was extra special.. my husband had agreed FOR THE FIRST TIME to try some sushi! I knew I wanted to take him here for the best experience possible to impress him with this wonderful "new world" he was about to explore. We were welcomed right away and seated promptly, everything was spaced out greatly and very clean, I would say they were great at this even before COVID-19! Our server gave us a variety of menus and explained that the QR code card (pictured 2nd) was their whole online menu for even more of a variety for is to order from. I thought that was a nice touch, especially at times like these. I showed my husband the menu and explained to him how ordering went and we chose some delicious options (pictures and described in photo 1). We primarily went for rolls that were crispy, he was a little weary about the raw meat, so we got the one California roll order for him to try that wasn't 'crispy'. Our meal arrived and he went right in for the Crispy Dragon first (my personal favorite) and he really was pleasantly surprised to love it right away. I was so excited I was opening up this awesome new chapter of sushi dates with my husband and it was all thanks to the awesome staff and delicious crafting they do at Shinsei Sushi. We absolutely cannot wait for our next visit and I'm already so excited! I highly recommend this restaurant and would love for anyone reading this right now, that could be still deciding somehow on whether or not to come here, just give it a try! Ordered California rolls with real crab and a bowl of ramen to go. The California rolls were good, tasted fresh and the upcharge for the real crab isn't too bad. The $10 bowl of ramen was simply disgusting bland mush. Completely inedible. No add ins at all. It was bland broth and mushy noodles. Honestly, a 55c packet of cheap store ramen is better. Coming from the Bay Area, Sushi is one of my favorite food. Obviously the best fresh sushi I've ever eaten was in Ginza, Tokyo - but that's for another review. Coming to Shinsei is always a pleasure. Dishes taste the same, and delicious. Today I've had the miso soup alongside seaweed and cucumbers salad wrapping it all with the Amazing Sushi roll. Price was $22.5 The only reason for 4 stars is the price, in my opinion a bit on the pricey side, can't make it my regular dig. Cute restaurant, yummy cocktails. Baked mussels were good also, but my boyfriend and I ordered 3 fried rolls and both feel physically ill. We eat sushi a lot and I haven't felt this sick after before. Might just have been a bad night or they need to change their deep fry oil, but I would not go back. read more

Enjoyable experience, nothing special for me that stood out on the menu. They have HH but not huge discounts. We tried a variety of rolls with edamame and dumplings. I can't get the Mango Columbia out of my head. There's a coconut milk aroma as you bite into the roll that is truly unforgettable. Of course, the look of the roll is a bit unforgettable too. It's a white and pinkish color that looks like its topped in corn. But those "corn" pieces are not-too-sweet mango bits that add depth to the rice and salmon, but its one that does not sweeten it or give it a tangy bite, which I don't think would have come off well. Seriously, it's easily the best thing I've eaten all weekend, and I'm in awe at the balance of the dish. So good. The Super Crispy and Las Vegas were close runners up. The Super Crispy features spicy tuna, tempura shrimp, and crab. The Las Vegas is a deep fried roll with salmon and generous dollops of cream cheese. The Super Crispy has the lightest of piquant kicks, while the cream cheese of the Las Vegas is smooth and buttery; they pair well together. I've long thought my last meal on earth should be Kansas City barbecue, but this sushi roll trifecta may give it a run for its money. I might at the very least seek it out during my second life during the zombie apocalypse. (I've never been too keen on brains.) The chef and his staff were super friendly. Lots of hellos, thank yous, and goodbyes, whether I was walking in, or out, or to the bathroom. On Fat Tony's Bend Scale of Service (a scale that ranges from "I don't give a crap" to "Go back to California"), I'm pleased report that the servers topped the scale at the "I don't give a crap" standard Bend service level. I'm sure glad the chef and his staff don't apply to this cruel standard. I'm not sure how I could have ranked them. I don't have a ranking for Genuine and Polite. The decor is beautiful. Lighting is just right. The fixtures fit well together, and the art pops out on the walls in a pleasant way. (There's a sort of green theme going on that gives the room a sense of positive, peaceful energy.) Seating is comfortable (no elbows-to-elbows). Bathrooms are super clean. Bend isn't known for it's amazing Sushi spots but Shinsei itches the scratch. There are a few places to get good sushi in Bend and this is definitely on the short list. Their non sushi offerings are also good and may be the better option if you don't like or aren't in the mood for sushi. Unfortunately, I could eat sushi everyday if I could afford it. Used to be really good and we would go here often. After they closed to remodel something changed. The food is noticeably worse, and not just an off day but the ingredients are inferior. The salmon tasted so fishy, the tempura was undercooked and I'm pretty sure they didn't prepare the shrimp right because after eating one fried shrimp I kept finding pieces of shell behind my tongue, which is a disgusting experience. Even the tempura dipping sauce was different in a bad way. I'm super bummed about this place, we seriously used to eat here every two weeks or so because it was the only place in town I knew of that served fresh salmon. Of the 3 Sushi places that I know of in Bend, this is my favorite. Yes the price is higher than I'd like to see ($16 for one person's lunch) but when you find your 'roll' (for me, it's the Mt McKinley) you are willing to pay. Being busy, they can be slow but the service is nice and the food is presented well. I would like to see call ahead orders available for sushi bar or outside seating at the least, even if only avail during certain times. But still will choose Shinsei first! read more

I was pretty disappointed in this place. We have been looking for a good sushi lunch spot and this came up with four stars. The two stars we gave it is for the service and selection on the menu. The prices aren't terrible, but still after a $40 lunch we left trying to figure out what we ate. The actual food is another story. No flavor, sloppy presentation (see photo) and the rolls were not put together well. The no flavor was the biggest problem. We got 3 different rolls and they all tasted the same. The Udon was decent but again bland. Put a little effort into the flavor. Don't just throw noodles and veggies in a wok and call it pan fried. The atmosphere was a little stiff as well, but the seating was spacious enough. I would not recommend this place. read more

Had a meal here last evening. Ordered Salmon Nigiri. I've eaten enough salmon nigiri in my life to know that it should just about melt in your mouth. The salmon nigiri I had last evening was so tough and chewy I almost had to spit it out. Ruined the rest of my meal. As far as the service, I had to request wasabi and ginger????? Why do you take our order and bring everything on a big platter all at once??? I HATE THAT!!! I'm not ordering fast food Mr. Owner! It takes away from the sushi experience. The Chefs can't speak to you either. If you ask one of them a question the owner immediately jumps in and answers for them. Such RUDE and CONTROLLING behavior. Building a relationship with the chef is part of the whole experience and fun. I've finally realized I am not going to get sushi like I did in the OC. The jalapeno poppers with real crab are delicious. I appreciate when sushi bars actually use real crab. I was just there, walked in at about 1:10. They sat me and someone brought water and a menu. But then nobody ever came back to my table to take my order for like 25 minutes. By 1:35 pm I walked out. Told the host too, but this place doesn't give a damn. "Oh I'm sorry" is all he said. Didn't offer nothin. There was 2 girls who I'm assuming had that section all the way to the right when u walk in by the cash register. They kept looking at me but just tended to their other tables never even asking if anyone had got my order. The table next to me one of their entrees didn't even come out. They're able to get away with horrendous service on the weekends cuz they're literally the only sushi place that's sit down in Bend open for lunch. And it shows, they have zero competition so they just don't give a damn at all. All the other sushi spots in bend are food trucks, yuck. or they're only open at night. read more

After camping for 7 days, we made it to our next stop, Oregon. Finally got a hotel room and the bf and I just craved for sushi. We found this sushi place on our way to a shop and checked yelp and only found 1 review. I saw that if you checked in, you get a free California roll, so decided to check it out. You ever get the feeling that if you are eating a specific cuisine, and it's not being served or made by the type of people, it loses some authenticity? Well, that's the case with Shinsei. Saw 3 sushi chefs and only 1 was Asian, it just felt a bit strange. Anyhoo, moving on, the decorations and the vibe of the restaurant feels nice. Saw the menu and had a variety of Japanese food. I ordered the combo 1, which came with 7 pieces of nigiri sushi and a choice in roll. I love their presentation! It came in a little boat! How cool is that?? We also ordered the Philly roll but I was a bit disappointed due to how little cream cheese they put in. The sushi taste fresh but expect lots of rice! I was super full after eating 4 pieces of sushi! I cut off half the amount of rice for the rest, that would be the perfect proportion. Moving on to their service, it's good! They don't bug the shit out of you but made sure your water is filled. After this long review, just to sum it up, took off 1 star for authenticity and 1 star for the massive amount of rice. OK, let me be honest - if I was living in Portland or San Francisco, I'd give them 3 stars. Their sushi is just above average, the rolls are good, if a bit centered about 6 different ingredients, but finding even decent sushi in Central Oregon is hard, so 4 stars it is! Also, they do have a service problem and the ambiance kinda sucks, but the food is good. Outside of a place like 5 Fusion you're not going to find better in Central Oregon. read more

He was the only one there and the place was half full, the host did not help him, his job was to seat people and not even bring drinks. I believe it ought to be teamwork but then, that's me. Shinsei Sushi - $8 martini that was stout - wow! not sure what gin they used, but it was fantastic. super cold....a must, and a full martini glass. Sushi rolls - spicy tuna and spicy tempura (that's about all my 14 year old son will go for-) the ingredients were super fresh, but there was something about the rice that didn't work. Not sure if there was too much rice, or the rice was overly gummy, but it didn't work - we still ate all of it. Tan Tan Ramen bowls - Chicken for my son, and pork for me. green and red bell peppers just don't work, nor does the broccoli. Even my son, unsolicited, said, "this is weird." broth was good, but not spicy like the menu said. noodles were good. why not nori and some bean sprouts with green onions. Anyway, ate the whole thing and enjoyed it. Just being a bit critical. Service for us was awesome. They were busy and grinding, but everything came out quickly and the server was super professional and engaging. Pricing was reasonable as well. Definitely one of the better sushi restaurants in Central Oregon! absolutely delicious

The atmosphere is nice and the service is very friendly and efficient. W and I both ordered bento boxes for lunch. We chose the two item bento box. The box includes rice, two pieces of gyoza, miso soup, a salad and two choices of entrees. (They also offer a 3 entree bento box). My box included teriyaki salmon and a shrimp tempura roll. W's box included yakisoba beef and pork tonkatsu. I loved all of my food, except for the shrimp tempura roll. It was loosely prepared and fell apart easily. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great. My salmon was the best I've had in central Oregon. The miso soup is delicious. W loved all of his food. The boxes are huge, so we had leftovers for dinner. The two choice lunch bento boxes are $13.95 each, which is very reasonable for the quality and quantity. read more
