Update to my previous review: Recently, my car failed its State inspection because of the after-market tint which was legal when I bought the car in Arizona but didn't translate here. The guys at the Mobil station that failed me wanted to charge me $150 to remove the tint. I took it to Shimon's this morning and not only did they remove the tint and give me a proper inspection, but they only charged me $30 a window as opposed to the $75 I was almost dumb enough to go for. I was also in and out in 40 mins flat. This is the best service station around, as far as I'm concerned. read more

I would give Shimon's six stars if I could. This is literally the most honest place I have encountered. My Nissian Xterra would not start the other day. I thought the starter was probably shot since the mileage was high. The guy who towed it also thought it was likely the starter. When I talked to the mechanic on the phone he thought it was most likely the starter. The repair was quoted at around 500$. I tell him to do it and when I show up to get my car the repair is only 100$. It seems the issue was a warn rubber boot on the clutch which cost around 20$. He could have EASILY charged me 500$ and I would never have even questioned it. I will be a customer for as long as I live here. read more

I needed new windshield wipers. I called to ask if they were in stock. Yes, yes. May I come now? Yes, yes. When I stepped into the cashier's area, a man stepped out from the garage, pulled off my wipers and disappeared. He returned 5 mins later with the thumbs up. I paid the cashier man in cash. In and out. No nonsense. Efficient service. No small talk. Fair price. What more can you ask for? Don't expect anything fancy. Be careful when taking a seat on their wobbly wooden seats and avoid their shabby snacks, but if you're looking to get your car serviced by a hardworking, multicultural staff, you're in the right place. I have been taking my car to Shimon's for 4 years and continue to go there even though I've moved out of Brookline. They are honest and kind, and do good work. They are very thorough, and do a good job of explaining what is wrong (if anything), and whether it is essential to get the work done right away, or if it is optional. They have never tried to upsell me or do service I didn't need. Most recently, my brake pedal was acting up. I brought my car in and they spent over an hour test driving the car and going through the entire brake system. They could find nothing wrong (and at that point the pedal was functioning normally). The mechanic discussed with me everything they did, then gave me the keys, and charged me nothing. I go here for inspection, regular maintenance, and when something goes wrong, and I am so relieved to have a mechanic that I trust! read more

I hate this place. I went to get my inspection sticker done in March, but I had just had the battery replaced and apparently you need a certain number of miles accumulated before they're able to run the emissions test. So they gave me a temporary sticker and told me to come back in 60 days when I'd driven more miles, and I wouldn't have to pay again. I went back today (one week after the 60 days had passed) and they told me since it was past the 60 day deadline I had to pay again. Another 30 dollars for them to just slap a sticker on my windshield. Whatever, I paid. I was about to drive off and noticed the sticker was for March, so I asked them why it didn't say May, since that's when they officially ran the emissions test. They gave some bullshit roundabout answer that didn't make any sense. I got so pissed off that I just drove away. Bottom line, I paid 60 dollars for a sticker that's only valid ten months. I'm never ever coming back, and will only go to AZ Auto Center from now on. As a side note, my boyfriend had a similar awful experience with them where they tried to rip him off. These guys are fast, helpful, and I would definitely recommend this place. They put time in to diagnose a problem with my car- since it was an old car I didn't have them do any work on it though. They charged me nothing even though they had taken the time to look at it. Should I have another newer, healthy car in the future, I will definitely go to Shimon. read more

My car was making a noise when I turned the wheel. I was nervous to bring my car some place in Boston because I always go to a repair shop I know where I grew up. I brought my car to Shimon's and they quickly set up an appointment for me to come in. They took my car in and took off the wheels to see where the noise was coming from. They told me that my breaks needed to be replaced and I needed a new part on my wheel. They charged nothing for looking at it even though it took them significant time! As someone who A) just moved to the area and B) admittedly doesn't know much about cars beyond changing a tire, the guys at Shimon's are fantastic. Not only are Kamel and his staff very knowledgeable and personable, but the thing that sold me the most is that THEY REALLY ARE HONEST AND TRUSTWORTHY. I know those words aren't normally synonymous with auto repair, but it's true. I checked with my old mechanic (in another state) about what needed to be repaired/replaced/updated based on the mileage and every single item on the work order was confirmed by my old mechanic. Kamel and his staff even told me 6 or 7 updates that my car DIDN'T NEED. When do you ever hear about mechanics intentionally saving their customers money? Beyond the fact that I feel lucky enough to have found a great place to take my car, the staff at Shimon's explained any/all problems in terms that "non-car" people can understand. They don't hit me with ridiculous labor fees or hidden charges, which is something any car owner can appreciate. The process was actually quite pleasant. Friendly local service station. They usually have cheaper gas than the station across the street! I went in for my MA Inspection and they were honest and helpful in telling me what things I really needed to get fixed and what things I should just do the minimum for. My main complaint is that the car shop has strange hours and if you call when the auto guy isn't on shift, the other staff can't really tell you much or schedule you for an appt. But, overall, they are easy to work with and I feel like they do a good job. read more

Shimon's is great! Today I noticed my tire pressure light was on in my car and that my tires looked low. I went to the first service station I saw, hoping they would lend me a tire pressure gauge. When I asked if they could help, they said it was no problem and to pull my car around. The nice man checked all my tires and filled them to the correct pressure, with no cost! I've only come here for inspections for my 2 cars, but both experiences were great. The staff are very friendly and service is very prompt. So how can you complain about that. I also like that they will let you pay for the inspection with a credit card while lots of other garages make you pay cash for the inspections. read more

Great service once again. There were some issues with my clutch, so I figured it was time to just bring it in. They let me bring it there on Sunday and just leave it in the lot (which was super convenient for me). I was told to just call in the morning. I didn't even have to! At 8:30 the next morning, I got a call with the diagnosis, and an estimated cost. By 1:30 that afternoon, I got another call letting me know everything was all set. I was able to pick it up that evening after work. Another great thing about Shimon's is that you have until 9 pm to pick up your car, which is great if you're prone to working late like me. I've had two batteries installed within one year and I'm about to go to another shop for a third battery. They were quite defensive about replacing the battery the first time and I decided to get a higher quality battery elsewhere as I did not want to subject myself to possible negativity. I'm not sure if the batteries are perhaps kept on the shelf for a while or that Interstate batteries are prone to be flukes but it has been a lot of time and money on my part to keep replacing batteries. I would be weary of bringing my car to this shop. They were quick about examining the car. read more

A good mechanic should have two qualities: automotive skill (obviously) and trustworthiness. The head mechanic at Shimon's, Kamel, is by far the best mechanic I've ever known. In fact, he's so good that I waited to write this review until AFTER I left Boston, because I like being able to drop my car off in the morning and have it ready in the evening, no matter the problem. If more and more people learn about how awesome this place is, I might have needed an appointment! As others have mentioned, they will gladly spend time looking at your car and even doing small repairs for free. While that's great, it gets even better. Kamel will go out of his way to find any possible way to save you money. We had a carbon deposit in our engine that needed several thousand dollars worth of repairs. Most mechanics would have jumped at the chance to make that kind of money. Kamel, on the other hand, explained the problem to us and suggested that before we plunk down thousands of dollars, we might get lucky by using some bottled engine cleaners they sell for $10 at every Auto Zone type place. Even though he said these chemicals often do nothing, he urged us to try them anyway, in case it would save us from having to undergo expensive engine repairs. His suggestion saved us thousands of dollars. It's really nice to know that Kamel is not out to swindle anyone, but he is simply doing a fantastic job with more integrity than anyone else. Now that I have moved away, I'm afraid I'll never find a mechanic that will live up to Kamel. But since I'm gone, feel free to swamp them with business! read more

This place is great. Kamel ,the mechanic, is a genius. I have an old Tercel and recently needed exhaust work. He saved me hundreds of $$$$ and did a great job. Another time I needed a new lock and he found a used one, and again saved me hundreds of $$. We've had lots of work done there: brakes, suspension, electrical stuff, windows, etc. They're unfailingly courteous, and have suggested cheaper alternatives a number of times. I recommend Shimon's to anyone in Allston/Brighton/Brookline who needs an honest, inexpensive shop. They tend to be full by about 8 AM, so plan to drop your car off early. read more

This place is the pits. Had a lot of work done by them and most of it was OK. But, they're super rude and f***ed up my Saab's wiring after doing a routine state inspection. I brought it in working fine. They failed it because they said the lights didn't work. Turns out whatever they did caused the lights to go on whenever the brakes were depressed. Not sure how they bungled that up. Called to complain and was basically told that I was a liar and to go to hell. Filed a complaint with the MA dept. of transportation, but my ultimate form of complaint was to stop going there altogether (that's why I've reviewed multiple repair shops after leaving them).
