I've recommended this shop to friends and family in the past, and that is exactly why this review hurts to write. A friend of mine dropped her vehicle off for diagnosis. I personally filled out the contact form with her name, phone number, and address. No repair authorization was given. No estimate was approved. The shop never contacted her that day. At the end of the day, she had to call them herself and was told they were closing and would contact her the following morning. The next day, she was informed that approximately $1,740 worth of repairs had already been completed and that she would need to pay the bill to get her vehicle back. Let me be clear: this review is not about whether the repairs were necessary. It is not about the quality of the work. It is about performing major repair work without first obtaining authorization from the customer. When I spoke directly with the owner, his position was essentially that the car needed the work, so they fixed it and the customer should be happy. I strongly disagree. A customer has the right to decide whether to spend $1,740, seek a second opinion, postpone the repair, or make other arrangements. That decision belongs to the customer, not the repair shop. What made the situation worse was the complete unwillingness to work with her afterward. She was forced to borrow money to pay the unexpected bill. Despite the circumstances, no discount was offered, no payment plan was offered, and no accommodation was made. The position was simply: pay the full amount or do not get the vehicle back. I've trusted this shop in the past. I've sent business their way. After this experience, I cannot recommend them to anyone, nor can I trust them with my own vehicle going forward. If you use this shop, make absolutely sure you have a clear understanding, in writing, of what work may be performed and what dollar amount has been authorized before leaving your vehicle. read more

I first became aware of JD in about 2008. I had a break light out on my car and a Brookline police officer stopped me. She warned me to get it fixed and if I am not mistaken she mentioned JD. I took the car over and he fixed it for absolutely nothing! Right then, my wife and I said we are going to come here with our car. JD and his son Costa are extremely patient, they listen, and they will not bs you just to get your business. Their work is top notch, they explain the problem with your car and they also will not allow people to buy unnecessary parts just to bump up the money. I brought my car JD's because of a strong gas smell inside the car and a wheel noise. They diagnosed a "broken spring" and I left with a $1300 bill for new "springs" on and car with 46,000 miles. I was told the gas small and wheel noise weren't there. I had told them that I had done research on the internet and that my particular model and year car had been one of many that had left the factory with loose sparkplugs. They refused to check this possibility, saying it wouldn't be ethical for them to do that work. I was also chastised for believing something I read on the internet. Fast forward a year later. I was doing 70 mph on 93 in NH. A loud noise suddenly came from my engine. I pulled over and could see nothing. I continued to drive with what I thought was a exhaust leak. My gas mileage went way down. The car struggled to get up the hills through the White Mountains. I made it to Saint Johnsbury in Vermont. The mechanics at Portland Street Service Center correctly diagnose the problem. A spark plug had actually blown out of my engine. It had unscrewed itself after a period of months. They replaced the spark plug and damaged coil and the bill was $269. No more gas smell. Lesson learned. Don't do business with people who dismiss your ideas and fix things that aren't broke read more

My Honda Civic was making a humming/whirring noise. I suspected the bearings and brought car to JD. After some diagnostic work they found that the problem was with the differential fluid (not the bearings) which they drained and replaced. This fixed the problem. JD does outstanding diagnostic work, excellent workmanship and their customer service is characterized by integrity, fairness and honesty. This is the only repair center that I would ever bring my automobile to. read more

I have been going to JD Auto Center for a few years now. I don't make a lot of money as I work in a mailroom, but I know excellent mechanical work when I experience it. I am a female, I bring my little car, a Honda Fit, to JD Auto Center because they do exceptional repair work. My car is a used 2010, but Honda is a very good brand, so the vehicle is reliable. But, when the brakes go, or the electrical is acting wonky, or when the exhaust was escaping because of a break in the tailpipe. JD Auto Center restored the vehicle to its BEST working condition. Folks might complain about some of the pricing. I advise comparison shopping and good ol' fashion negotiation. But remember, YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. If you want your BRAKES, or other regularly maintenanced auto-parts to be reliable, then you go to JD. If you want to gamble with QUALITY, go to other places. Cars have costs to them, you can go somewhere cheaper, and I have done this a couple of times, and was always cheated. The mechanic would put in used parts or not fix anything at all, and I will have paid them my hard-earned money! Later, when I brought it back to JD AUTO, they would point out the shoddy work or expose the part that was supposed to have been repaired but wasn't. Enough said! Because I live on a budget, I have a car repair fund, and this allows me to take care of my car. My car is my lifeline. My work depends on having a reliable, functioning vehicle, so I need Mechanics, I can trust not to screw me over. I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN VERY SATISFIED WITH THEIR MECHANICAL EXPERTISE! Their Mechanics are Top of the Line! They are Responsive, you can sit and wait for most vehicle repairs. They are open Saturdays! They've been my first choice when it comes to fixing my car nowadays. I have learned my lesson. Yes, I can go to the dealer and pay dealer prices and those prices are often a lot higher. I prefer, JD Auto because I can't beat the way the car feels and responds after they have worked on it. I am absolutely getting what I am paying for. This was the third place I tried to get an inspection because the first two had folks who weren't wearing masks. I called ahead and asked if their shop workers wore masks and they said yes. Sure enough, everyone here was wearing a face covering (though they were mostly gaiter-style, not masks), and their protocol is to have folks put down the driver's side window before turning over the keys to the car. As a public health professional, I appreciated that they were following state law and public health guidance. Can't say enough wonderful things about this place. I brought my 2004 Prius in because I was having issues with shaking and jerking while driving. They offered to look at it first thing in the morning. I was offered a ride home, which wasn't needed but was a sweet touch. The next afternoon I came in and John the owner talked me through all the repairs. He gave me an extremely reasonable price and even showed me the busted pieces he had removed from my car. I really trusted he wasn't pulling anything over my head. He even saw my boyfriend looking at the bill in the parking lot and offered to go over it one more time. Really honest and reputable place. They are SO much better than any dealership- going through both Honda and Mazda proved treacherous. Pay attention to the gas prices despite what the sign out front says. I pulled in for a tank of gas after seeing "best gas prices in town & reg is $3.09" . I pulled up and told the nice gentleman at the full service pump fill the tank with regular so he does exactly that and gives me a receipt and I was on my way. After looking at my receipt I noticed the price was approximately $16 more than usual? they charged me $3.94 per gallon for REGULAR gas. As a young woman who is far from home, going to the mechanic can be an intimidating and confusing endeavor. John at JD is the best!! I've lived near this station for years and brought my car in many times, also my family's cars. The work has been ... fine, though expensive (though I think that was a function of their being an Exxon, gas prices have gone way down since they became JD Auto Center). There have definitely been moments where, as much as we love the guys here, we've been less than thrilled with work. I've continued to go to them out of convenience and loyalty -- but no longer. Almost two years ago, I was hit badly by another driver, and frankly it's a miracle I was okay. I had my car towed to JD because we were very nearby and it was late, and they did the initial repair work. A few months later (no one having touched my car since JD), the service light came on in my car and I took it to the dealership, where they lifted it up and showed me the missing bolts on my wheel, the completely movable brake line (I'm no expert, but I could compare the quality of the work on one wheel to the other three that had been undamaged in my accident), and the crappy parts that had been used. The dealership told me it was pure luck that my brakes hadn't failed. I refuse to bring my car in to JD now, and I tell other people not to, as well. It's a bummer, because I want to believe they are doing the best work they can, but after seeing with my own eyes the problems with my car, I don't have much good will left. read more

This is just "JD Auto Center" now, no Exxon. I had was very happy taking my car here for any issue for a couple of years. Doug and John are extremely nice, patient guys who sincerely care about their service and customers. However, John talked me into "winterizing" the car last Nov., which was $80 for something modern cars aren't supposed to need. They said they replaced the coolant, and a couple weeks later, there was suddenly a problem with the car overheating and all the coolant was gone. I trusted that the timing was a coincidence and we took it in many times, trying to get them to fix the ongoing coolant leak, but they said the source of the problem was ambiguous each time. Finally we took the car to Arborway Auto Service Center and they said the problem was clear. $1500 later they replaced the head gasket. JD Auto Center may be good for the small things and more affordable, but don't let them up-sell you, and if you have a big problem, then you have to go to a big repair place. read more

John is so personable and kind, it's no wonder he is so popular. Doug and Costa are super nice and most importantly they know their stuff. Although I buy gas at JD Auto Center, I have never had a car repaired there. I am writing this positive review because they were so helpful today when my very old about to be donated car conked out as I was about to purchase some gas. I managed to get the car into a parking spot in their lot to call a tow truck. The manager (owner? John?) came over and first had one fellow check the oil for me and fill a tire, then had one of his mechanics look at the car to see what was wrong. That mechanic got the car started and explained to me what was wrong, showed me what was going on under the hood, and how I could drive it home if I did not want to call a tow. I followed his suggestion and got the car home - with a few stalls. They did not have to help me out the way they did and I am very appreciative of the assistance. So when I buy my new car they will have a new customer! read more
