We thoroughly enjoyed sitting at the chef's bar, watching the process flow, learning about the dishes, and having some good laughs :) I've been to shift twice now and you really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Shift is CONSISTENTLY great. The menu does change frequently which is exciting! The pickled fries are their signature (get a side of the ranch too!). The tomato sorbet was my favorite. I recently had the best meal I've had in a very long time- and as a northern AZ local, that's hard to say. I ate here 2 weeks ago and I'm still dreaming about the duck taquitos, mussels toast and the Thai tea clarified milk punch- which was more than words can describe. After one of the duck taquitos, I immediately placed a second order to-go so I could have more for breakfast. The menu is small and changes frequently which is nice to see. The menu is limited in on GF options, so if you can't do cross contamination- this isn't a spot for you. Food wise: Brussels were good. I had the burger and fries but it fell flat for me. It was all very "acid" based. Just felt like there was more missing and it had too much going on. Elegant menu and presentation. Very attentive and friendly restaurant staff. A treat for my adult daughter and I to indulge ourselves and experience a gourmet multi-course dinner. It was fun to sit at the bar with a view of the chefs as they created their culinary masterpieces. Included a couple new flavors for us, and one course was too spicy for my taste. I'm glad we went. Only had a short night in flagstaff but spent it at this very cute and inventive spot. We weren't extremely hungry otherwise we would for sure have been indulging in their chefs tasting menu. Nevertheless we got some great dishes. We started out with cocktails. Had a hard time choosing what to order but looking around the restaurant it looked like every drink was a winner. We next had some artichokes followed by the carbonara tortellini and barramundi. Last but not least we finished with the blueberry cobbler ice cream. Shift aims to focus on bold flavors, a locally driven menu, and artfully composed plates served up amidst a casual and approachable ambiance." Sounded good. We started out with drinks. My husband had a Coconino Cloud ( Bergamot oil washed Harahorn gin, Flying Leap lavender brandy, Giffard vanilla, cream, lemon, egg 17), and I had Alone in Kyoto (Vinas de Oro Pisco, Joto Yuzu Sake, Unico Yuzu vermouth, cucumber bitters 21). Both of us were just a little disappointed. For having two components of Yuzu, I could not discern any yuzu (and I love yuzu), but it definitely gave me the feeling of Japan, and we still enjoyed the drinks. Since this was described as a "share plates" type of restaurant, we shared a Fattoush Salad (17). My slight disappointment with the drinks was sudden turned around. Delicious! Some restaurants overdress their salads, but this one was perfect and flavorful. We then shared the Lamb Pasta (32). The fresh pasta was perfectly done, and balanced the richness of the lamb. The Jidori Chicken Thighs (35) were flavorful and tender. For dessert we had the Lemon Chiffon Pie. This could have used more lemon to be more flavorful, but was otherwise fun and light enough that we could each have had one. Service was excellent. The atmosphere was casual but elegant. Made a reservation as recommended. Place is small so I guess you can say it's intimate since the space is a little tight, felt a little cramp. Our server was really friendly and nice and patient with us. Got the aperitif flight: 5 stars. Worth a try. variety of flavor - smoky, sour, sweet. Very interesting. Carciofo: 3 stars. deep fried artichoke with a feta and a truffle mouse. It tasted ok. Love the crispy ness but everything was so salty...... why?!? Artichoke tasted like it had been in brine so there was enough flavor but not sure why it tasted like they add extra salt on top of that. Beets: 3 stars. Very tender and well cooked beets. Citrus was good but I didn't care for the roots and top that were left on the beets. Could barely taste the mint crystals. And cheese mousse/cream was ok could use a little salt in this dish. Panisse: 3.5 stars. Kudos for having a veggie options. The chickpea cubes were pretty decent but could use a little salt (or maybe eating a lot of the over salted artichoke threw off my taste buds.) my mom enjoyed it but she didn't understand why the mushrooms were sour. It does come with capers (which I didn't eat with the Panisse) so I guess it balanced out. Barramundi: 3 stars nice crispy skin with yummy asparagus. But the taste is a little mono tone. Maybe you can add a grilled lemon for us to squeeze over as the crispy skin is salty but the taste of the fish meat is very bland and could use a little lemon as it does taste somewhat fishy with its blandness. The coulotte:3 stars. I enjoyed the meat but it definitely could use some salt over it when cooked. Meat was tender. Couscous was meh, I enjoyed the leek flavor with the meat to help keep it from being monotone with the couscous. Nothing stood out. Chicken nuggets:4 stars. Little one enjoyed it and ate most of nuggets. I tried the fries and they were crispy. Over all an ok experience. Just expected a little more taste to the prices for the dishes. Also, wanted to try the tasting menu but they said whole table had to participate and that sucks since. We all had such varied palate and food restrictions. They are accomploshing their mission statement. savory sorbet- Red Bell Pepper cucumber- cool refreshing. Sweet and balnved with the goat cheese. The familar flavors of sweet red bell pepper and cucumber blends well into a compforting flavor and as the goat cheese comes through with the sharpness it really ties in the experience. The sweetness and sharpness just elevates this sorbet in a decident dish. Complex yet simple comfort food. Wow! Sorbet: tarragon. I think they just keep hitting home runs! The tarragon was just simply comforting! Must try! crispy Brussels- the brussels by themselves are perfectly cooked. You can taste brussel but the sweetness of the alleppo honey complements the bittnerness of brussels. The cheese has a creamy note the balances the sweetness sage Derby cheddar and sweet- cheddar had a deep sharp flavor. Peaches were perfectly ripe. The peppery arugula definetly tied the two together. Together you get the sweetness of the peaches and they disolve and arugala comes through and disolves into the creamy cheese to round off the dish. Smoked salt added the richness and sweetness of the dish. The salt helped the peaches. The cheese flavor carries on the pallette. Duck taquitos- the mequite mole and apple pico work very well together. Tortillas bring testure. Very crispy and light center and do not interfere with the dish. The pico mole are the stars of this dish. The amount was perfect. Very satisfying and the flavor carried for awhile afyer i was done. Left a womderful taste on the pallete. Rabbit Lasagnette- Deep rich sauce. Textured nutty. Sweet soir drizzle ties the rchnes with the cool fresh mozzerella. You get a sweet, savory., hint of sour and umami expierence. pan seared scallops- appearance 11 out of 10.. The smell!!! Savory sweet. You smell peaches. Then you smell scallop. The sauce. This is a dish for the ages. Youll remember this one! Sauce has a sherbert sweetness allows you to expierence the tartness of the peaches. The sauce masks the flavor of the scallop for the first few bites then finish with the subtle brine umami flavoe of the scollop. Pallete is left with the flavor of scallop yet the tingle of citrus. Just a savory comfort flavor and expierence. Bavette Steak- perfectly cooked as requested. Chimichurry is balanced and allows the flavor of the meat to come through. The meat was tender and seasoned perfectly. The mashed potatoes were smooth and had a well balanced flavor and were thick and stood up well to the glaze and didnt become watery. read more

When we arrived, we were unexpectedly seated at the "kitchen bar" and it was the best "seat in the house!" In all my travel, there have been 2 restaurants that were so good that I would travel to go back just for the restaurant. One was el celler de can roca in Barcelona and Tomiño Taberna gallega in nyc - Shift would be the 3rd. We had the cheese and peaches, the duck taquitos, mushroom pasta, fries, pork chops, Brussels sprouts, the pavlova and a blueberry pie. The food was extremely inventive and interesting. Not that everything was a slam dunk but there was something that was very special on every plate that made me curious to see more of what the chefs will come up with - for example I never would have paired the cheese and peaches together. But it was great. The duck taquitos were dough heavy and I couldn't quite tell it was duck but the mole was spectacular. The Brussel sprouts were perfectly fried and the cheese cubes added a great salt kick. But it did get a bit one note. I would have added a local berry of some kind to give it a random sweet/spicy kick here and there. The mushrooms and pasta dough were perfectly executed with a sauce that I did not expect. The pasta texture was great, which is hard to do in a filled pasta. Most chefs would tap out and go with a generic cream sauce but the port butter sauce here gave it a very interesting spin. I wished I had some bread to soak up the sauce. The pork probably could have used 30 seconds less in the fryer - but the sauce, feta and cactus were surprising in the best way. It made it almost not about the pork, which I did wish was thicker. The burger meat is serious (my kid got a kids burger but I'm sure they used the same meat) and so flavorful. It's rare to get a burger that doesn't need anything else...no sauce no cheese nothing. The kids chicken tenders tasted like there was rice flour or starch mixed into the coating which gave it a perfect crunch. The pavlova dessert was such an interesting play on textures. Finally that blueberry cardamom pie....HOLY HELL Heavens to Murgatroyd !!! That pie was deathbed pie...ie one of the last mouthfuls of food I would want before I kicked the bucket and left this earth. I don't know if the pie is that good everyday but I sure hope so for the sake of my future self when I go back. The service was great. The maitre d was fantastic and so accommodating. We were spending one night in Flagstaff on a road trip and I found this place on Yelp. We had a fabulous experience! We came after 8pm on a Wednesday and sort of expected a lukewarm experience with staff ready to go home, but not so! From our first greeting to the moment we left, we felt like honored guests. I do not write bad reviews unless it is thoroughly deserved! My husband and I came here for our first time in April. They had seated us at the chef's counter, but my husband said it was too hot with the heat from the stove, so they seated us at the other counter, otherwise, I may have seen health code violations the first time as well! In April, I enjoyed my entrée, but my husband did not enjoy his, and we were not impressed with the dessert! I decided to give them another try when my husband was out of town on October 10. They open at 5, so at 4:55 there were four parties waiting. The gal, whom I think is the manager, was cleaning the windows, and did not even say hello. Absolutely no acknowledgment that we are standing there! Same thing happened at my last visit! We were let in at 5:01 PM. If you're looking for a romantic evening, this is not your place, as the restaurant does not offer that kind of seating! I sat at the chef's counter, where you can see everything! The ladies to my left were very pleasant, but the couple to my right, she immediately turned her chair, so her back was facing me. I placed my order, and then one health violation after another preceded! I thought it was very strange that right at the counter, they have open containers of asparagus and broccolini, when people are talking, laughing, sneezing and coughing at the counter. Sure enough, the unfriendly gal to my right, turned her head a little bit and sneezed, which would've made it right into those containers! Then, one of the cooks spilled a container of something on the floor, went to the back room that patrons can look right into to get a broom and dust pan, swept up the mess, put the broom and dust pan back into the back room, walked right past the hand sink and proceeded to touch food, without washing his hands! Then he pulled out a container that said relish, dated 10/3, grabbed a spoon and tasted it, told the other cook that it still tastes fine, and keep in mind it is 10/10. So with stuff marked a week old, they do a taste test? Then one of the other cooks went to the back room, where you can see he is eating, grabs his personal water bottle and drinks out of it, comes out by the hand sink, and I'm thinking he's going to wash his hands, but no, he just grabbed a paper towel to wipe his mouth, and proceeded to start making food again! This is the second employee that has not washed their hands when they should! I did not eat my whole burger and fries, and in fact, I ended up throwing it out when I got home with all the violations that I witnessed! I did call the Coconino County Health Department, but in my 23 years here, I know how laxed they are! Luckily, I did not get sick, but really? For the prices they are charging, everything should be on the up and up! I know my husband did not go back because he did not like the food, but I will definitely not go back with such blatant violations of the food safety code! read more

One of the best things I've ate at Flagstaff, hands down! The chef and crew need an award or something because the carefully crafted meals was phenomenal! Sitting at the bar top also gives you the fascinating experience of watching the staff plate each meal and listen to how they communicate with each other. Reminds me of those cooking shows haha. Their menu changes frequently as you see their bathroom wallpaper are their older menus haha (nice touch!). Here's what we had the pleasure of having: - the burrata was served with some chili fused tomatoes that complimented really. the spice was a nice kick and made the dish very unique than other burrata dishes. - Pappardelle dish had a subtle lemon zest to it that was a nice touch and I usually don't like nuts in my food but this added a nice texture to the dish. - the burger came with homemade chips that were well seasoned (maybe a tad bit on the salty side). the burger came with some jalapeno infused cheese and crispy onions. The kitchen and bar are right next to each other so it's a tight space but the way the staff work together, it doesn't make it seem cramped. Everything from helping us pick the right wine to providing a sample of bourbon to help us make the right selection. I had the curry jackfruit which was deliciously flavored. My husband has the New York Steak (minus the mole sauce) It was cooked to a perfect medium rare and perfectly seasoned. My sister in law had the scallops which were perfectly seared and tender as butter. We were celebrating my birthday so along with our dessert order of chocolate cake, they brought a scoop of huckleberry gelato. That was the best gelato ever!! Located downtown flagstaff off of N. San Francisco Street, Shift Kitchen + Bar is a unique culinary experience. Reservations are best as this place is popular and is quite cozy, i.e. small. The idea of Shift is to share plates in a family style manner. I discovered this by reading the website after our meal as our server, Britt, was terse and did not elaborate on introducing us first-timers to the restaurant. Ignoring that irritation, our party thoroughly enjoyed the food experience and we had the following: -Bread board -Artichoke Rockerfeller -Elote Agnolotti -Pappardelle -Caribbean Curry Stew -Chocolate cake -Baklava rice pudding There is a 4-course tasting menu which I'm sure is wonderful & the whole table needs to participate. Birthday dinner at Shift in Flagstaff. This place is so amazing that we drive all the way up here to have an amazing meal for his birthday. We started with their signature pickled french fries. The potatoes are soaked in a house made brine and then fried to golden perfection. Next up was the cassoulet. Duck confit, peppers and caramalized onions served over a white bean purée. It was an interesting dish that my husband loved. I wanted more of the duck flavor to come through. Salt spring island mussels were served ina. Delicate tomato garlic broth with pieces of torn bread tossed in. These were great. The flavor of the sea from the mussels and the delicate broth were delicious. Moroccan lamb tartare. Ground sirloin, tahini yogurt with chili oil and a rice cracker. This was the turning point in the meal. The spices used transported me to an Indian restaurant and the lightness of the yogurt with the airy rice cracker made a great bite. Roasted carrots. This was almost a okay on PB&J. The carrots were served atop a peanut creme with sour marinated blackberries and black sesame. The sweetness from the carrots and the peanut cream brought the sweetness and the marinated berries but it with its playful acidity. Very interesting and comforting combo. Sage pappardelle pasta with a lemon and Parma sauce with walnuts and preserved Meyer lemon. Best bite of the night hands down. The pasta was cooked so perfectly, it had a velvety texture. The delicate cream sauce with that hint of lemon was so simple yet so decadent. Amazing. I really wanted to order it again but we still had dessert to go. Butterscotch mousse. Not to pretty but was amazing. It was served with some tart raspberry jam and rosemary meringue. The savory-sweet meringue was perfect with the rich mousse and it was all balanced out with the tart jam. Great ending to a great meal. We also had the Flippin' Shiso cocktail and the Passport Stamps Espresso cocktail for dessert. Perfectly crafted cocktails. This place is definitely worth the drive! read more

A cozy, neighborhood vibe and one of the best meals I've had in years (my 37 years)? You bet. My longtime friend (LA) and I (Denver) were in town for a few days to explore Flagstaff and enjoy a few days away. We both agreed that our meal at Shift was better than anything we had experienced recently in our respective cities...just both metroplexes of multiple millions of people. A perfect dry martini, and the best medium rare burger...well I struggle to find a comparison. For how good the meal was (brussel sprouts, salmon, scallops, risotto, burger) we had no reservation and only had to wait maybe 10-15 minutes. We made reservations about a week in advance, as we were flying to PHX from California to hit national parks, so timed our Friday night arrival with some give in the schedule. That said, we received a notice of a $30 charge for late or no show if rez not cancelled 24 hours in advance. We had zero control over the flight, so worried we might get hit for that. We made it on time, but that was strike number one. We arrived on time, and they proceeded to seat us on barstools facing a wall. We objected we booked a week in advance, they said "next time" we should specify a table. Strike Two. We requested a table should one open up, which they did a few minutes after our drinks arrived. My $16 cocktail was very good (margarita variation); my wife's was...interesting. A miss. I'd had bison several years before in Wyoming, and was thrilled to see it on the menu, so I ordered it; my wife had a pork chop. Her pork chop was tasty, but very little else on the plate. My bison's flavor was so subtle as to be undetectable. Salad it came with was passable. At least the refried squash was good. We left with a hole in our wallet and still hungry. Strike Three. Walked around downtown and found a good cookie place. We seldom visit Flagstaff, but definitely will NOT be a next time. read more
