I had the most wonderful massage experience here. Shibui is part of a well known hotel. The staff greeted me and they were kind throughout my experience. I really love how it's traditional Japanese style for the most part. I noticed the small details of the Japanese robe, wooden combs, the interiors, taking your shoes off and leaving them outside of the massage room before entering. Even some of the architecture was captured in the hallways and definitely the rooms. My upper back and neck felt SO MUCH BETTER. I appreciated the sauna experience and how you can create steam and how a shower was installed there. The pool is like still water with a nice lounger area. My friend and I visited Shibui to celebrate a very special birthday, expecting a luxury spa experience. While the space itself is undeniably beautiful, the overall experience was deeply disappointing. Despite the carefully curated photos online, the reality falls short. The locker room is small, and the lockers are cheap, loud metal units reminiscent of a high school gym--clanky, flimsy, and completely out of place in a supposedly high-end spa. The steam room, though visually modern, was clearly malfunctioning, abruptly turning on and off with loud mechanical noises. The controls were visibly worn, and the shower was nearly impossible to use. The three sharp, confusing knobs made regulating the temperature impossible, with the water swinging unpredictably between scalding hot and freezing cold. The most upsetting moment came after the shower. When I unrolled the towel mat provided, I felt a sharp prick on the sole of my foot--it turned out to be a nail clipping left behind. This was incredibly unsanitary and unacceptable. The lounge area offered no relief. It was uncomfortably cold, the tea was lukewarm, and the snacks consisted of small packets of nuts you'd expect on an airplane--hardly appropriate for a luxury spa. We were most excited for the "heated pool," only to find that it was cold as well. Instead of relaxing, we sat bundled up while waiting for our services. The long robes provided were completely impractical and borderline dangerous. They dragged on the floor while navigating a steep, narrow, dimly lit cantilever staircase leading to the treatment rooms. I nearly tripped and had to catch myself more than once. Unfortunately, the massage was the final disappointment. It was shockingly poor. The therapist's hands were trembling, large areas of my body were skipped entirely (including my neck and mid-back), and the technique felt amateur and untrained. It was clear there was a lack of experience. Having visited many spas and received countless massages throughout New York, I can confidently say this was one of the worst spa experiences I've had. Shibui relies heavily on aesthetics and branding while failing at the most basic elements of comfort, cleanliness, and quality service. Don't be fooled by the beautiful photos--there are far better, cleaner, and more professional spa experiences elsewhere. read more

A wonderful relaxing spa day! I came to Shibui for a day of R&R with coworkers and it lived up to the expectation! Located downstairs in the Greenwich hotel, Shibui is a little oasis. The amenities are a little spread out but overall great experience. As you enter the spa lobby you'll see a fitness center, followed by the men's/women's locker rooms. There is only one bathroom inside so if it's full at the time of your arrival travel back past the lobby to the main bathrooms. Through the locker room there is an indoor pool and relaxation room. This is filled with lounge chairs and nooks to relax with water/tea and trail mix. If you are having a service your therapist will come here to get you. You are guided back through the locker rooms and the lobby to go downstairs to the treatment rooms. Small touch, but I appreciate the rooms being so quiet and relaxing. You don't wear shoes in the room so you truly can focus on yourself and not all the sound going on around you. Overall, it's a bit pricey for services and I wish everything was a bit more centralized together but it surly delivered relaxation! read more

There was so much attention to detail through out the treatment, and I felt very well cared for. The staff generally is just too-notch. I'd actually give Shibui spa 4.5 stars as it is really best in class for a New York spa and I would have given it 5 stars but for the locker room / shower area. As others have noted, Shibui is located in the Greenwich Hotel. When I checked into the spa, they gave me a locker with a towel, kimono and slippers to wear. The spa itself is truly transportive with its beautiful Japanese themed style interior and luxurious lap pool replete with life guard. I would definitely recommend bringing a swimsuit to take a dip in the heated pool. The atmosphere is quiet, there are a lot of recliner chairs, and they offer green tea and dried fruit and nuts for you to nibble on before your treatment time. If I had to classify this spa, I would say it seems best suited for solo females or two females that come together along the lines of the Mandarin Oriental Spa or any of the other high end spas you'll find at nice hotels in the city. Given its offerings, size and ambience, it isn't so much a couples spa (like Aire Ancient Baths), a sports massage spa (like Great Jones Spa), or a group amusement park like spa (Sojo Spa Club, or World Spa). That said, of course anyone and everyone can come and I am sure they get a lot of travel-weary hotel guests. I opted for the Diamond Glow Facial and this Japanese aesthetician came and took me to a room and gave me a really cleansing facial with extractions and upper body massage that incorporated aromatherapy. It was nice and relaxing, but I did feel she was a bit rough with massaging my face compared to what I am use to at more clinical/medical type spas and as a result, I think I would opt for a body massage next time instead. She also "suggested" two facial products for me and I know this is a business for them, but I am really not looking to be pitched anything when I am seeking a relaxing experience and I have a dermatologist who has recommended a different set of facial products for me. Afterwards, they have steam showers (that pelt you at all angles with a huge rainfall one overhead) and aromatherapy products to use before you get dressed. The locker room area is small and there are only two showers. It can only really comfortably fit 2 people in it at any point in time, but at one point there were 4 people in there (2 in the locker room area getting changed, 2 getting out of the shower) and we kept running into each other and apologizing for getting in each other's way. I know they time treatments and have finite real estate, but the locker room area is really too small / limited and doesn't have enough amenities to comfortably and property end the experience. I felt claustrophobic and rushed to get out. Nevertheless, when I walked out back into the streets of Manhattan afterwards, I felt like I was floating and like all the stress had been washed out of me which is why I am still giving this spa 4.5 stars. read more

Walk in, make a left, right then take the small elevator down one floor. The hotel has an old school charm with a lot of class. The spa gives it a more elegant and slightly modern twist. The spa also offered some amenities before and/or after your treatment like sauna, lounge area and a pool. One of my favorite part was the lounge area. You get to lie down on the comfy lounge chairs and just relax. Wait staff would come around to ask if there's anything you need (tea, water, magazines, etc). Why... yes! I would like a magazine and tea please! He brings me an iPad with all the subscriptions. Wowsers. High tech and super convenient! All this reading material and the internet all at my fingertips! It really felt nice and relaxing. My boyfriend did a lot of research because he knew what I spa fanatic I was and got me a 90 minute Healing Birch massage for my birthday. birch / shea / peppermint / helichrysum birch: reduces inflammation and relieves chronic pain shea butter: softens dry, tough skin and restores elasticity peppermint: clears the mind and enhances concentration helichrysum: increases circulation, promotes production of new cells, uplifts the spirit The massage was heavenly and I really felt all the 'healing'. My therapist worked well at getting me comfortable and made sure to ask what areas to work on more. What I liked about her was that she asked about the pressure to make sure she got it right. I got the Thai poultice massage and it was blissful! My masseuse, Mika, was highly skilled and knowledgeable. The poultice itself was warm and fragrant. She used it throughout the 90 minutes to relax my tense muscles in addition to kneading and stretching like a traditional Thai massage. After reading some negative reviews I figured out there were a few things I could do to help guarantee a pleasant experience. For instance, some reviewers complained about noise in the pool area, as it is open to all hotel guests, including kids. Others complained about the small size of the women's locker room which can easily feel crowded if three or more people are in at once. Also, the locker rooms are upstairs, but the treatment rooms are downstairs. You must walk past the large glass windows of the gym in order to get downstairs which can feel uncomfortable if the gym is busy and you're in nothing but a spa robe. It was obvious to me that an easy way around most of these issues was booking at an off-peak time. Weekends and late afternoon/evening are times when the spa, gym and pool are likely to be busy. So I booked my massage for a Wednesday morning. I ended up having the locker room to myself. There was no one in the gym. And only two other spa clients in the pool area. It was so quiet and zen. The staff was friendly and attentive without being overbearing. I would definitely go back again, but never on the weekend! read more

It was more of a rubdown (and when I asked another gal in the locker room her impression after her "massage" she said The Same Thing.) I even had to remind my practitioner to do my hips (after she finished my back and went to my legs). Loved my experience at Shibui. Everything felt luxurious from the moment I stepped inside of the Greenwich Hotel. The locker rooms were clean, had all the items you could need and even had Toto toilets (to die for). Any massage treatment includes access to the pool which was stunning. I did laps before my massage and loved every minute. The ambience was gorgeous with dim lighting and fake monstera plants. My massage room had also nice dim lighting and a warm massage bed. I got to choose my aromatherapy oil too and got to enjoy some boxed water. I had a 60 minute Swedish massage with Lucy and it was the most relaxed I had been in awhile. My wife is a teacher and a new mother, I scheduled her an appointment at ShiBui for her birthday. She was so excited, and I was excited for her. Like a lot of people in this city, we both work a lot to make ends meet and going to a place like ShiBui is a big deal. On the morning of her appointment (9am, her appointment was at 3:00pm) she pulled her back out lifting our son out of his crib. Freak accident. I called ShiBui and explained the situation and that I would reschedule as soon as I had all of the information. They still charged me $230 to cancel it. Strict policy, they said. I came home from work as soon as my wife called and said she couldn't move. She was in tears, my son was crying next to her. And I owe $230 for a birthday gift that was never received. The massage at Shibui was fantastic! But the condition of the pool was disgusting, an incredibly large hairball was floating around by the steps and a fake eyelash was at the bottom of the pool. I reached out to them about our dissatisfaction and the solution was to spend $600+ more dollars on a massage and they would give us a glass of champagne. Terrible baffling customer service for a place so expensive, you'd think they would have higher standards and better customer service/interest in their customers satisfaction. I love the decor and vibe. But it is the loudest massage I've ever had. A lot of the decor are made from wood which is very cute and calming. The wood cabinets in my treatment room tend to made lots of noise when it opens and closes. I get it, but the therapist seems like in a rush. She doesn't try to open or close the cabinets gently in order for the customers to relax. Everything she does is loud. Stressed me out. For the massage, the therapist basically throws the essential oil on my body and rubs it around. I didn't feel any big reliefs on my body. Before going into the massage room, the therapist asks me and my friend to choose an essential oil. As I'm choosing, I guess I block the door way a little bit, cuz we are choosing the oil at the cashier, there are not much space. Then, There is a lady who just finished her treatment who is walking out from the door way. I saw her, when I'm trying to move, the therapist pushed me away without saying anything. Had the pleasure of a facial here this morning. The therapist was simply wonderful. I did the add on package with the eye/lip treatment. The therapist was very comforting, informative and skilled. My skin looks amazing. She also massaged my arms/legs, neck - much more than you get in a typical facial. Was great. The spa itself is small but very nice. They have a beautiful pool free for guests - I just didn't have a bathing suit. The water was a nice warm temperature, I almost went in commando! The locker room is small but I liked that it was quiet (I was the only one there). They had a great steam shower with two shower heads. Also the bathroom had a heated toilet/bidet which was a nice touch. Like everything at the Greenwich Hotel, this place paid great attention to detail and did not disappoint. Upon entering the spa, I was greeted by a friendly front desk staff who helped me check in and gave me a locker to put my things in. While all the facilities including the changing room, bathroom, showers and pool were luxurious, there was a certain coldness to the place. While the decor was zen-y and straight out of a resort in Bali, it was very empty, with only 4 staff members who were mostly curt and formal, and snobby hotel guests. Not sure why children are allowed inside, who made a lot of noise and ruined the ambiance. My massage was alright, my masseuse was very attentive to my needs and asked exactly what I wanted. But the treatment was just amazing amazing amazing ! I had the sake soak before my oxygen facial. I was having such a bad day, the kind lady in the front recommend sake soak, they pour a whole bottle of large sake in to the bath, and offer a delicious yuzu ginger drink and a bottle of cold sake. The room is so cute ! Unlike all the other hotel spa, this Japanese theme spa is just a breath of fresh air. I enjoyed my bath and my sake and they rang the bell let me know its time for my farcical! Massage was mediocre at best and even calling a massage is an upgrade from the service I received. The 3 stars go to the impeccable service of the front desk and cleaning crew, the place is spotless and smells amazing and the ambiance is a true escape from the city buzz. If you decide to visit the spa make sure you allow more time before to enjoy the pool and the steam/sauna or have a workout to the gym that is at the spa level. The gym is very well equipped and you can have an amazing workout there. The locker room is very basic but adequate and spotless. The cleaning ladies were on top of everything and extremely polite and discreet. The massage was a disaster. I did the Healing Birch and I asked for a deeper pressure that the regular. What I received was a massage therapist pressing on my back, butt and thighs with her elbow and forearm the entire time. I never felt the touch of her palm, fingers, thumbs, hands. At some point seriously she was pressing with her elbow so hard for such a long time at the same spot that I thought she would hand me my right kidney after she sticks it out of her elbow. I did give her a hint when she heard me breathing deeper and somewhat annoyed, "how is everything". I said politely, I am used to and enjoy a different type of service, a massage that actually incorporates massaging the pressure points with your hands and promotes the blood flow to release tension blah blah blah. I used massage lingo for everybody's benefit but it did not work. The answer was "I am doing therapeutic work" and she continued to lay on me with her elbow. The only time that I felt some type of a benefit is when she did my neck and the only reason is because she could not elbow my neck while i was laying on my back so she had to use her hands. The second thing that was extremely annoying was that my service was booked for 7.15. I arrived at 7.15, I changed, they showed me where and what and went to the pool to wait for the therapist to pick me up that they had to call her to show up. Then we went to the room, we chatted for a second about what I am looking for and then we started the service. The earliest I could be starting at the best was 7.25 to 7.30 for an hour service. At 8.25 she goes, Oh my God! I worked 10 extra minutes on you! Wow, I did not realize it, 10 more minutes extra work!. I did not say anything. Then she kept going, how did I work 10 more minutes without realizing it! Wow, enjoy! Again I did not say anything as I am not going to argue or play with the minutes but that was so not true. If she decided to hold the hour service after we were late to begin, great and it is the right thing to do as I was her last client and for the price of the service, but there were no extra minutes in there so shhhhhhh. Just had a 2 hour body treatment here. It was very relaxing. It was a birthday present from my husband. My only feedback would be that I booked the fall/winter body treatment based on the services described on their website and did not get that service as detailed in their Body Treatment section. I got a body scrub and then a wrap (not clay as described online). I was supposed to get a scalp massage while the clay set but I was told by the masseuse it would be too messy. Since I was already in my robe ready to go I just deferred to her judgement. My 60 min massage was not with the oils described for the fall/winter body treatment (I was told it was last year's menu?) and I was offered one of 5 elemental oils that they offer on their basic massage menu. The massage itself was relaxing and well executed but I would recommend the spa to update their website to reflect the services that they actually offer. Since I had a gift certificate I may have selected 2 separate massages instead bc the body treatment given was not as described. Serena was absolutely amazing and so professional. She recommended me to do a Diamond glow treatment during the day so that way my skin was glowing for my event at night. I received so many compliments on my skin! Then the next day I visited her again for another amazing treatment. I was feeling very tired from the night before so she did the Peirto facial face massage treatment on me. My Shibui spa treatment was a dream come true. I received the Healing Birch massage as a gift and can't speak highly enough of my whole experience. I only wish I had arrived even earlier to enjoy my Japanese tea by the pool longer before my treatment. I had never had a full massage treatment before and was delighted by the attention I received and the relaxing results. Mary was my massage therapist and she was wonderful. Everything in the spa is clean, comforting, and luxurious. I have never felt so relaxed in my life and felt like I was glowing from the relaxed muscles and mind for days after my treatment. I recently visited Shibui to get a prenatal massage "little bean" 90 mins as a birthday gift to myself! it is by far the best prenatal massage I had (compare to 4 other spas!). I prefer to be massage with my belly down (special pillows) and not on the side, which she managed really well. The clay mask on the belly smells incredible and was very soothing as well! The changing room, rain shower, and lounge area was super clean. The heated pool was a lovely feature especially for pregnant women who is looking to stretch a little in water! Okay so this was one of the most expensive spas I've ever been to so expectations were sky high (massages were $325 each not including the automatic 20% gratuity). Upon walking into the spa it doesn't seem overly extravagant and the locker rooms aren't stocked with an overly generous amount of toiletries and grooming tools (just basic stuff like aerosol deodorant and razors) so I was a little worried that we were going to be over-paying. The front desk staff were the friendliest people I've ever met in a spa and they took a genuine interest in us, but I was kind of expecting a welcome drink or something but there was nothing like that. But the massages! Oh my God this was the best massage I've had IN MY LIFE and I get a lot of massages at nice places. My husband is also a luxury duck and hard to impress and he said his was the best massage he ever had too. We left the place floating on air and feeling brand new. I can't recommend it highly enough because their masseuses are world class. I just wish there was a bit more in the way of additional 'perks'. For example, when you enter the pool area there's an attendant standing there but he doesn't acknowledge you or offer you a towel or anything and he seems kind of unfriendly. You have to go up to him and ask him where to get one. He doesn't offer you water or anything - you just have to go get it from a nearby table. And while there are beautiful loungers all around the pool it gets kind of boring sitting there - I wish there was a menu of food/snacks you could order. Plus there aren't any other amenities for non-hotel guests other than steam showers in the locker rooms. So, if the massages weren't SO.FRIGGIN.INCREDIBLE. I wouldn't really classify this as worth the price. But luckily they were. I'll be back and can't wait read more
