I just moved in nearyb and have been on the hunt for a go-to massage spot. Soho Spa was my first stop -- and I think I found the one! A 60-minute deep tissue massage for $60 is an absolute steal in NYC, especially downtown. I'll admit, I was a little skeptical at first after reading some of the reviews. The spa is on the second floor, and the exterior (plus the staircase leading up) looks a bit sketchy -- but hey, it's NYC. The building's old, but once inside, everything was totally fine. I was greeted immediately by the staff, who were all very kind and welcoming. I called ahead around 3 PM on a Monday, and they were able to take me right away. The rooms are small but fairly clean -- not a luxury spa, but I felt safe and comfortable the entire time. I believe Sarah was my massage therapist, and she was fantastic. She was sweet, attentive, and really listened when I told her about my neck pain from sitting at a desk all day. She spent extra time working out the knots in my neck while still giving a full-body massage. Wish I would have read the reviews before I went. My husband and I went in for a couples massage with hot stones. He paid in advance. We didn't receive the hot stones. I mention it too them and they wouldn't refund any money back and expect us to give a tip. My husband said no, we didn't get our full service. She caught an attitude with us. The message itself was terrible for me. The lady spend over 45 minute on the left side of my back. Never touched my ankles, feet or front side. My husband said his's was ok but he had better. When it came time to pay, we were told that we had to leave a $20 tip per person on a $96 service. We were surprised because that amounts to over 40% of the service cost. When we questioned it, we were repeatedly told that the tip was "mandatory." We tried to communicate respectfully and even used a translation app to avoid misunderstandings, but the conversation became uncomfortable and confrontational. What made the experience even worse was how we felt afterward. Some soreness after a massage is understandable, but several days later we were both still experiencing significant discomfort. My boyfriend is currently dealing with hip pain severe enough that he's limping. A good massage should leave customers feeling relaxed and cared for. Instead, we left feeling pressured, frustrated, and physically worse than expected. Came here with Groupon for couple Massage. My BF's - he said it was hard enough (male masseuse) but he mostly just go large gesture up and down, not focusing on any specific area. Mine - I asked it to be harder after 10-15 min, then then switch me with a male masseuse which is fine. I dislike those Chinese massage place using the technique focusing on little tendon/knot and just keep rubbing it, it creates tension, it's not relaxing and it hurts. It is not how a "harder" massage suppose to be, it's cheating. Both masseuse used excessive oil which it got on my nerves midway as knowing it's prob cheap oil. The way thr hot stone was used also was messy, just swooping up-and-down... Left meh, but still tip the requested amount I just want to get out. At this point, I just feel like I should have spend $50 more and go to a legit place to get a real relaxation one hour. read more

If I could give this place zero stars I would. I've been here twice and both times were horrible. The massage therapist literally don't know what to do. It took one girl 20 minutes to get started and she was so confused about how to do a Massage that I actually had to leave because it was so frustrating And the first time the lady also didn't seem to know what to do and the manager just literally ran away and hid from me when I asked for a different massage therapist. This place is awful and it's also not in SoHo so I don't know why it's called SoHo spa. Avoid there's several other great places in the neighborhood. read more

We asked them not to do it anymore and they continued even after knowing and understanding we were upset. Total time they spent away from my couples massage was 15 minutes that they expected us to pay and we did without any offer of additional time being added. I almost didn't go here because I found a webpage that suggested all kinds of shady practices were offered here. That was so far from true. This is a totally respectable spa. Unfortunately, I didn't particularly enjoy my massage because it lowkey hurt a little, but that also may be because I got a male masseuse & it was my first time getting massaged by a male masseuse. Well what an experience here! I went with a friend and the massage was great. However the experience after not so much... my friend paid for both of us and tipped over 20% (each massage was $60 and we tipped $13 each) but they also wanted me to tip separately and went in front of the door to keep me from leaving! Came during my short trip in nyc with my roommate. Since we planned on walking around a lot and have busy lives at home, I decided to book a couples massage with hot stones here. We used a groupon which can sometimes be sketchy, but it was so amazing and relaxing that we had to tip generously. Both of our massage therapists did a great job. Fantastic location. Only reason for 4/5 and not 5/5, they didnt ask us about any trouble areas/what we wanted to focus on. They sort of just took us straight to the room, which was fine, but i'd prefer to have a quick consultation beforehand. I got a groupon for a couples massage with me and my bf for our anniversary. I usually get massages every month and I came here due to the positive reviews. But i had a bad experience. First, the door was wide open the whole time. I felt uncomfortable as I am basically naked for anyone to see. My masseuse also didn't even massage me. She just put oil gently up and down. I asked for her to go harder but she didn't and did what she was originally doing. When it came to the hot stones, she put them on a towel and just placed it on my body. Definitely not what hot stones are supposed to do. She was really rough on my body when she was rubbing the towel on my skin. She "massaged" my body for only 10% of the time and 90% was with a towel. I feel like I just paid $100 for oil to be on my body and to be exfoliated with a towel. I was really upset with this experience. And then they demanded me to tip them as well.
