I have to be honest with you (like I'm not usually?), this review is causing me some discomfort…read more None of it is due to Porter Paints. It's all me. Let me explain. Last summer, I was charged with the duty to paint our guest room. We chose a beautiful deep, dark red color. So far, so good. Of course, I immediately went to the store that our professional painter used when he painted every other room in our house a few years ago. I asked Mike why he used Porter Paints. He said, "I don't know anyone better." That sold me. This is quite a store. Solely devoted to paint and those who paint, it is very big (I think). Whatever you need, they've got it. Naturally, I must have looked like a deer in the headlights as soon as I walked in, because the employees noticed and immediately knew that I needed assistance. I appreciated that, even though I felt out of place surrounded by professional painters all of whom knew what they were doing. I was armed with my trusty colored swatch, so I wasn't completely naked. Mary was able to provide me with the service, advice and discount I needed to complete my task of painting the guest room that day. It didn't take long. Before I knew it, I had a roller in my hand and was barking out orders to my friend, Steve. As we initiated our task, we slowly and methodically made our way around the room from top to bottom on each wall. So far, so good. They we had to put the second coat on. Everything went well until the very end. Steve managed to over-do the strip next to the door which created a three-dimensional paint blob. By this time, it was late, so I told Steve that he could go (before he could do any more damage). I got out the sander and delicately sanded the area with the blob. It looked pretty good until I painted it again. The color we chose is very tricky. It changes shades with each coat. I did the best I could with the blob. Then I noticed all the paint marks on ceiling at the corner of where the wall meets the ceiling. OMG! What a chore. The only solution I had was to cover up the paint with plaster. It worked, but it was tedious and took forever. Needless to say, it is now day two. I finished the ceiling touch-up when I noticed an oval-shaped area near the window (in plain sight) that was missing most of the second coating. Oh boy! I got out my finest brush and went to work. I held my breath and I prayed very hard for this attempt to succeed. Guess what happened? To this day, if you stare straight at the oval area, it's now a big circle of another shade of red! UHHHGGG! I feel like Charlie Brown! Darn it all. My wife keeps reminding me of the faux-pas and I just keep saying that I'll get to it, which means that I have to paint the entire room over again - I don't think so. I hope that you can feel my pain. I think that we all have our "painting" stories. But, don't allow this to reflect on the 4 star rating I gave Porter Paints. It's not their fault. Next time, I'm going to hire my friend Mike again. I'll let him worry about the dreaded OVAL!

Another Glance is a consignment thrift store on the corner of a vaguely run down street. To give an…read moreidea, there's a burnt down house down the road. But going the other direction, some nicer houses. Several mannequins line the windows in a pleasing display of colors and patterns. Inside is relatively small, but orderly, with the space maximized with shelf displays and purses high up on the wall. Two large windows bring in natural light. The racks of clothing inside are shoppable, and not over stuffed. They are mostly all women's clothes, arranged by broad categories such as pants and t-shirts. The demographic skews a bit towards the stylish older woman: waterfall cardigans, Vera Bradley purses, comfortable shoes. Good condition clothes, from quality value brands like Uniqlo, to mid range department store brands like Style & Co, to some gems, like from Garnet Hill or Marmot. Prices might be a little more than Goodwill, but the clothes are in better condition than the Goodwill down the street on Mt Vernon road. The designs are also a nicer selection with some fashionable embroidery, cheerful prints, and perhaps a few items in better fabrics like cashmere. And even better when there's a 50% sale on select categories. The lady at the cashier is welcoming, and willing to engage in conversation. She allowed me to look through the corner section of unpriced items and offered to price some on the spot. There are three fitting rooms painted bright pink. The rule is to leave the garments in the fitting room after you try them on. The doors are unusually high though so I was hesitant to try on pants because I hadn't shaved my lower legs because yknow, winter. If you're thinking about consigning clothes to this shop, call ahead as it may be full and not accepting more as space is limited. I recommend checking out this thrift store. Even though maybe the location isn't the most inviting, the actual shopping experience was comfortable and pleasant.

I'm working on a patio project and instead of wandering around a gigantic store in Ontario, I stopped at Kell's. I walked in and was immediately greeted. I explained what I'm doing and they personally walked me around the store, helped me gather up the exact right components, paint and proper fittings, cut the PVC at no charge, rung me up and had me out the door in less time than it would've taken me to drive to Ontario. Three people helped me while I was there -- THREE -- while simultaneously assisting other customers. It made me realize how much I miss dealing with real people who are knowledgeable and actually want to help. It just. Doesn't. Happen. But it happened at Kell's today. And it happens every time I've ever been there. Very thankful to have them right here in Lexington.

This is a typical old fashioned hardware which stocks everything from pin hooks to garbage cans and also repairs screens and glass windows on the side . The best thing about these mom and pop places is that the clerks all have an intimate knowledge of how their various products work , and how to best apply them to fit your individual needs . You may find things a bit cheaper in the hardware section of some big box store , but you are also on your own as how to use the item that you've bought ! For a real eye opener ..... take the time to visit your local mom and pop hardware store one Saturday afternoon ......I call the experience "hardware university" where you can learn the proper way to do things from an old pro , who knows his products And how to use them.
