They do make some savory delight as well. My favorites are green onions buns, ham & egg buns and hotdog buns. They also make simple Togo sandwich. This is full bakery so of course they have load of sliced fresh bread from plain sliced bread, thick cut often great for sandwiches and they make an awesome French toast. They also have a bunch of varieties of different items that they could put in these loaf of sliced bread, such as red bean, green tea, raisin, custard, coconuts just a name a few. And how can I forget? They also do delicious pastries as well as single serving and whole in cakes . I love their Asian style cake is because the cake is made with whip whipped cream instead of buttercream. The cake itself is light , fluffy and moist, . The cake has a simple sweetness where it's not overbearing sweet like American style cake. The cakes are decorated with fresh fruits and other delights to make them more appealing and delicious. I recently came across this bakery and it just impressed me with wide spread of desserts. This place is very clean, well-organized, and stock with an impressive variety of sweets and savory pastries that make it impossible to leave with just one item. I am big fan of their pineapple buns, which have that signature crunchy top and a soft, airy interior. Their cakes are very fresh, soft and delicious. The desserts at this place are less sweet. Here you will find the typical Asian pastries/baked goods: whole loaves of bread, celebratory cakes, custard tarts, danishes, tea eggs, & cookies. The sweets here are more mild when it comes to sweetness level and the pastries aren't heavy. So why would Sheng Kee get a 3 star rating?? Simply due to the unfriendly, unwelcoming, and judgmental looks the elderly staff give off. This place wasn't busy during my visit, in fact, our party was the only shoppers. I assume boredom really set in for the workers since they apparently didn't have anything else to do besides glare at patrons. I wouldn't go outta my way to come back to this location. My personal purchases were extremely limited because I really didn't feel like spending my hard earned money here. Clean and organized bakery from the Sheng Kee brand. Inside are self serve stations and a cashier counter. Just grab a tray and a pair of thongs to grab your choice of baked goods, then pay at the cashier. It's mostly to-go bakery since there's only 2 small tables with 2 seats inside, so this won't accomodate any groups or people staying to eat their baked goods for longer than 20 minutes. Like all the other Sheng Kee bakeries I've been to, prices are reasonable and I appreciate how they regularly bring out freshly baked goodies, to replenish the supply throughout the day. Their Hong Kong milk is regularly only $2.95, but they have current special if you order between 8am to 12pm noon, a bun (average $3-4), it is only $2 to add a Hong Kong milk tea. Good deal for a quick breakfast bite and drink. My order today: Portuguese egg tart, BBQ Pork Bun, mini matcha mooncake, and hot Hong Kong milk tea. Nice local bakery cafe with some seating in a busy strip mall in Union city. I've visited multiple times in the past year to pick up small treats after grabbing a meal at the Din Ding Dumpling nearby. The sweetness level of the treats is mild which is just how I like it. On my most recent visit, I picked up a few cakes on my way to visiting a friend for tea. The cake rolls are a good shareable accompaniment with black tea. When I was checking out, the queue had grown pretty long so the staff opened another counter to start checking people out faster. read more

This is a long-established bakery, a small shop, but it offers a full variety of breads and cakes. I really like their tiger roll cake and puddings. Recently, they've also introduced different pudding flavors, which are quite nice as well. I especially recommend their homemade Hong Kong-style milk tea (served hot only), it's excellent. The store isn't very spacious, but it's clean and tidy. The prices are fair and reflect the quality of the products, not too expensive. The service is also very polite. Growing up we always got the Asian cakes since they were light and not too sweet. Sheng Kee is one the original bakeries we would get our cakes from. Swung by on father's day in the evening and they had only a couple cakes left since this was last minute. Usually I preorder but I'm glad they had a few left. I opted for the mango mousse. Have not been to Sheng Kee for years! The place is clean and bright. Service could be faster, it was as efficient as they could be. A customer before me left some pudding items on the counter and it took a few minutes to figure that out. She came back after grabbing a few more items, and the other cashier helped her. The green onion buns were good: still prefer them to have more green onions less dough. I also got the buy 5 get 1 free Portuguese Egg Tarts deal. They were tasty. However, amazingly I like the Portuguese Egg Tarts at the bakery inside Ranch 99 on Rosewood Drive in Pleasanton more. They taste more authentic. The crust here needs some work. Convenient location, right next to an Asian supermarket and parking can be hard if on a weekend. I did not mind walking, so I parked quite far away. Part of the parking lot was flooded though, so if you come on a rainy day, be mindful and careful not to drive a low car, or watch for flooded spots. read more

1 star removed because they don't bake enough pineapple custard buns which are obviously the fan favorites! They have abundance of other buns stocked in more than one location of the bakery. If your customers want pineapple custard buns then why aren't you baking more? This is for all their locations!! We tried the taro mochi and salted egg one it was not to our taste buds. Pretty expensive and dry! The almond loaf is yummy along with the cocktail buns which is a classic. The workers have been nice so far. read more

This Sheng Kee gets busy! I've visited many times, during weekdays and weekends, it's always got some hustle and bustle. During the weekends, it's got a lot of hustle and a lot of bustle. So, I'm pretty sure the baked goods are freshly made on a daily basis as I can bet to think that they sell out at the end of the day. The baked goods are always consistent, tasty, and you know what you're going to get. Savory, sweet, yogurt based, cakes, coffees, teas, and bobas, you're bound to find something you'd enjoy here. They'll also have seasonal mooncakes and other goodies. Not so much a cafe but a few seats and tables strewn around a bakery focused store, most people take their foods to go rather than sit down and enjoy. Plenty of parking in the Marina shopping center. Sheng Kee Bakery has been a staple inside the El Mercado Shopping Center for years now. They sell a variety of asian inspired baked goods and pastries. This location is pretty decent sized and offers a lot of different pastries and also has a good amount of seating if you wanted to enjoy your goodies at the bakery. The selection of breads and baked goods here are great, I like getting the Chocolate Pineapple Buns, they are delicious and filled with Chocolate inside. Just wished they would ensure that each bun had equal amounts of chocolate, as some do not have as much as others sometimes. Each week they have a weekly special so make sure to check what the special is to take advantage of it! There is a $10 minimum for credit card usage, so make sure to have cash if possible. The customer service here is okay, the people that work here are friendly enough to get by, but don't expect too much. Wish they had a loyalty program here for regular customers, but they don't. Four stars based on cakes we picked up for a house party. We snagged the Mango mouse and Japanese style cheesecake. The mango mouse was light and sweetened to a moderate level it was delicious and not too heavily sweetened. The mouse was a bit on the thick side would have liked it to be a bit softer. The Japanese cheesecake had two layers of consistency to it. The bottom was more dense and the top was a bit fluffier. Overall not really cheesy more like a pound cake but still good. #ThankYouThursday A big thanks to ShengKee Bakery for introducing me to enjoying kernel corn on a sandwich. It was interesting and delicious, and I only lost a few kernels. I believe the bread is made on site. It's so soft and fresh. See the sandwich with the tomato in my images. I've been back twice to buy a loaf for home made sandwiches. The Sung (Pork Floss) sandwich is on a soft croissant roll with a little mayo, ham, a boiled egg and corn. For me, it's an interesting sandwich, but quite tasty. I also tried their Sun Cookie, but I didn't enjoy that one. There is another Chinese bakery with Degrees in the name. It makes my favorite Sun Cookie where the outer crust is flaky and the inside is perfectly sweet. Here's What I Think... I'll be back to try a different dessert. read more

Back in my college days and before 85 degrees started popping up around the Bay, this bakery was one of my faves. I remember how much smaller this bakery was in the early days (see my panoramic pic - type "The inside!" in the search bar of the photo gallery). The remodeling did them justice! So glad the inside of the bakery got widened just a bit more. Nice to have some tables to chill out at now instead of just grabbing and going. Two cashiers were busy making several drinks, so it took a few minutes for them to ring me up. I was first in line and 6 other customers were waiting behind me. I would've hoped that one cashier would check out customers. Once a cashier finally got to me, my initial order of two items totaled to $5.80. Unfortunately like most of the Asian shops out here, they charge for using your debit/credit card. So ***NOTE: "$8.00 minimum for using a card + anything less than that is a 50¢ charge." I decided to grab two more items instead. Here's what I walked out with: BLACK SESAME ROLL -- this was a "NEW!" item recently added. I'm a sucka for black sesame so I looked forward to it. It was the first item I tried once I got inside my car. Cake rolls are usually hit or miss. This was fasho a miss. The black sesame flavor was prominent but the cake was dry. Sometimes the filling can make up for and compliment it but the amount was minimal. I ate half to give it a chance. I wouldn't recommend it. H.K. HAM & EGG BUN -- I looooove ham & egg! Especially when it's a square moist egg! Peep the pic for the thickness of the egg. I ate half once I got home. I feel like they can chill just a taaaaad bit on the mayo. That would make it a 10 for me instead of an 8. CURRY PORK SUNG ONION TWIST -- Errmerrgerrdd. This was saaaaaltyyyyy. The onion, pork, and curry powder altogether made it heeeeellllaaaa salty. GREEN ONION BUN -- Simple, but one of my faves. The bread is fluffy and the amount of green onion gave it the perfect amount of flavor. Do not patronize this business because of unfair business practices. There was a line to be served. When it was my turn I approached the older lady at the register and she motioned for me to go to the other cashier who was not done helping his customer. The person behind me spoke Chinese and she took him right away. He then ordered and she emptied the items in the hot cabinet even though clearly I was first and should have had a chance to order. Sheng Kee Bakery in Union City is one of eleven stores in the Sheng Kee chain of bakeries in the San Francisco Bay Area. I haven't been to all of them, but right now I prefer to go to this one. Why? Well, I used to work in Union City, so the area is familiar. This Sheng Kee is relatively new. At my last visit, the store was clean and bright. The store was well organized, and the staff were polite. I don't usually buy the fancy cakes. I like to go there for my favorites such as Butterfly cookies, chocolate cream rolls, and almond cookies. Going to Sheng Kee brings back memories of going to SF Chinatown with my grandmother. She would tell me that Chinese bakery items aren't really sweet, but they must be fresh. Sheng Kee items are fresh, and they wrap them up in packaging to preserve the freshness. But you know, it's best to enjoy them right away. Someday, I'll have to visit this store in the morning when it's fully stocked. I would guess I'll have a better shopping experience. read more

I haven't been at this location in ages! I hardly recognize the inside after the remodel (which happened quite a while I assume...). It looks great, clean, and more comfortable than before. The staff were friendly and welcoming. Always a plus when baked goods are served with a smile. Unfortunately, some of our pastries were undercooked. I was in denial for a good sec. But when I decided to mold the doughy sections into a ball, the realization kicked in. Still a cool place to check out, that still has some heart baked in. Sheng Kee Bakery has been a beloved gem in Union City! Love all the pastries and drinks and cakes here! One of my favorite pastries is the green tea Mochi bun! Always so gooey and always stuffed to the fullest. Recently, we tried their chocolate raspberry kitty cake and omg! SO DELICIOUS! Not too sweet and the frosting was so light. The raspberry definitely tasted like it should meshed in between two decadent layers of fluffy chocolate cake. It wasn't the best chocolate cake I've had, however, I enjoyed the fluffiness to it and the way it melted perfectly with the raspberry and frosting. What's also amazing is that if you buy a cake, you get a free cake kit! It's complete with plates, forks, candles, a birthday sign & the cake cutter! That's right! It's so cute! This is great for a quick on the go snack or for a picnic. On this trip I got pudding ($4.45), egg putting ($2.75), danish fruit boat ($3), bacon bun ($2), garlic cheese strip ($2), and a coconut roll ($2).
