I'm no stranger to Sheng Kee Bakery and have made purchases in the past including cakes. With that said, this was my very first visit to this Union City location. Here you will find the typical Asian pastries/baked goods: whole loaves of bread, celebratory cakes, custard tarts, danishes, tea eggs, & cookies. The sweets here are more mild when it comes to sweetness level and the pastries aren't heavy. Items that I enjoy from SK: *BRIOCHE LOAF *CUSTARD BUN *BBQ PORK BUN *PAPER CUPCAKE *CUSTARD TARTS *FRUIT BASKET CAKE Pastries are good, the selection is plentiful. So why would Sheng Kee get a 3 star rating?? Simply due to the unfriendly, unwelcoming, and judgmental looks the elderly staff give off. This place wasn't busy during my visit, in fact, our party was the only shoppers. I assume boredom really set in for the workers since they apparently didn't have anything else to do besides glare at patrons. I wouldn't go outta my way to come back to this location. My personal purchases were extremely limited because I really didn't feel like spending my hard earned money here. They're lucky my nephew's eyes lit up at the sight of the bakery- he essentially got them the same. Meh.

First time visiting this Sheng Kee Bakery location. A good sized bakery with some inside seating. The parking isn't that bad since it's in a large plaza. We actually stopped in late so the choices were few. But, my mom likes the baked items here.

Clean and organized bakery from the Sheng Kee brand. Inside are self serve stations and a cashier counter. Just grab a tray and a pair of thongs to grab your choice of baked goods, then pay at the cashier. It's mostly to-go bakery since there's only 2 small tables with 2 seats inside, so this won't accomodate any groups or people staying to eat their baked goods for longer than 20 minutes. Like all the other Sheng Kee bakeries I've been to, prices are reasonable and I appreciate how they regularly bring out freshly baked goodies, to replenish the supply throughout the day. Their Hong Kong milk is regularly only $2.95, but they have current special if you order between 8am to 12pm noon, a bun (average $3-4), it is only $2 to add a Hong Kong milk tea. Good deal for a quick breakfast bite and drink. My order today: Portuguese egg tart, BBQ Pork Bun, mini matcha mooncake, and hot Hong Kong milk tea. This bakery is is located in the same shopping plaza as Marina Foods. Grocery and a Daiso store.

Nice local bakery cafe with some seating in a busy strip mall in Union city. I've visited multiple times in the past year to pick up small treats after grabbing a meal at the Din Ding Dumpling nearby. The sweetness level of the treats is mild which is just how I like it. On my most recent visit, I picked up a few cakes on my way to visiting a friend for tea. The cake rolls are a good shareable accompaniment with black tea. When I was checking out, the queue had grown pretty long so the staff opened another counter to start checking people out faster.

Love the remodel - not sure when it happened but we come here every trip to Norcal. Yummy bread thats affordable. Lots of variety of pastries, breads, snacks and even hot food like egg tarts and tea eggs. Easy to find parking on the non-supermarket side.

This is a long-established bakery, a small shop, but it offers a full variety of breads and cakes. I really like their tiger roll cake and puddings. Recently, they've also introduced different pudding flavors, which are quite nice as well. I especially recommend their homemade Hong Kong-style milk tea (served hot only), it's excellent. The store isn't very spacious, but it's clean and tidy. The prices are fair and reflect the quality of the products, not too expensive. The service is also very polite. Highly recommended!

    Moldy cake

Today, I got my daughter a slice of chocolate mocha cake. I am trusting the bakery and didn't check the cake. My daughter ate it half way though and I noticed something greens on a chocolate cake. Took a closer look and the cake is moldy. Oh my god ! How long has it been in their fridge and they still sell it.

This bakery has a plethora of Asian breads, pastries, snacks, and cakes. My favorite is the chicken pot pie right next to the cashier, but I also like the chestnut cream cake they sometimes have.

Growing up we always got the Asian cakes since they were light and not too sweet. Sheng Kee is one the original bakeries we would get our cakes from. Swung by on father's day in the evening and they had only a couple cakes left since this was last minute. Usually I preorder but I'm glad they had a few left. I opted for the mango mousse. Still light and semi sweet. Fruits were fresh and everyone enjoyed it! Cake was spongey and to can taste the mango.

Japanese Cheesecake and the included plates and utensils for the birthday set.

Pretty happy with the Japanese cheesecake we bought. Fruit was tasty and the person at the counter gave us plates and forks in a nice little premade bag.

Have not been to Sheng Kee for years! The place is clean and bright. Service could be faster, it was as efficient as they could be. A customer before me left some pudding items on the counter and it took a few minutes to figure that out. She came back after grabbing a few more items, and the other cashier helped her. The green onion buns were good: still prefer them to have more green onions less dough. I also got the buy 5 get 1 free Portuguese Egg Tarts deal. They were tasty. However, amazingly I like the Portuguese Egg Tarts at the bakery inside Ranch 99 on Rosewood Drive in Pleasanton more. They taste more authentic. The crust here needs some work. Convenient location, right next to an Asian supermarket and parking can be hard if on a weekend. I did not mind walking, so I parked quite far away. Part of the parking lot was flooded though, so if you come on a rainy day, be mindful and careful not to drive a low car, or watch for flooded spots.

Just a small area of goods.

This Sheng Kee gets busy! I've visited many times, during weekdays and weekends, it's always got some hustle and bustle. During the weekends, it's got a lot of hustle and a lot of bustle. So, I'm pretty sure the baked goods are freshly made on a daily basis as I can bet to think that they sell out at the end of the day. The baked goods are always consistent, tasty, and you know what you're going to get. Savory, sweet, yogurt based, cakes, coffees, teas, and bobas, you're bound to find something you'd enjoy here. They'll also have seasonal mooncakes and other goodies. Not so much a cafe but a few seats and tables strewn around a bakery focused store, most people take their foods to go rather than sit down and enjoy. Plenty of parking in the Marina shopping center. I always try to make a visit when I am in the neighborhood.

Advertising a promotion they won't honor. Took my $120, then took my stamp card.

UPDATE (Jan 7, 2026): I am updating my review because Sheng Kee's corporate team reached out and went above and beyond to fix the situation. They were incredibly professional, admitted the mistake, and mailed me two tote bags along with two $10 gift certificates to make things right. I truly appreciate a company that takes accountability for their customer service. While I will not be returning to the Union City location due to the poor service I received there, I will definitely be back to visit Sheng Kee's other locations! Thank you for the wonderful resolution.

The malasadas were definitely good. It feels like care went into each one--they tasted all homemade and fresh. They definitely did not skimp out on cream or filling. I'm typically not a fan of desserts, but these had the perfect level of sweetness for me. The fruits were nice and ripe as well. The two flavors I got were the blueberry matcha and the mango. The blueberry matcha had this nice rich blueberry jam mixed in with cream that actually has a good matcha taste. The mango one was really fresh--this one was my favorite. Although they aren't cheap at about $6.25 per one, they were definitely delicious. It seems like a family run business that puts a lot of care into their products though. I'll be returning but maybe more as a nice treat rather than a regular go-to.

There were a few people in line and it did take about 10 minutes before we were able to order. During that time, some of the malasada flavors ran out, but they were quickly replenished. We grabbed an assortment of flavors, an iced oat latte, and a black sesame latte. The banana creme brulee malasada looked so good that we had to try it in the store while waiting for our drinks. The dough is so soft and pillowy with a crispy layer of bruleed sugar and a delicious banana cream that was absolutely to die for. At $6.50, it's not a cheap treat, but it was super delicious and I'm glad we tried it. The drinks were also great. The espresso shot they pulled perfectly complemented the oat milk -- this is one of the better iced oat lattes I've had. We tried the black sesame latte because it sounded interesting and it was so creamy and loaded with black sesame flavor. For anyone that doesn't drink caffeine, I highly recommend you try the black sesame latte. With such great quality malasadas and drinks, it's no wonder there was a line! We'll definitely be back!

I'd love to keep Pie Dreams my little secret, but out of respect for the proprietor's mad baking skills, it's behind Dino's. The owner is passionate about his pies and shared his philosophy about how pie can make us all nicer, gentler people. I mean, that's not exactly verbatim, but the pie case made it hard to pay attention. On my visit, there were two savory pies (hand pies) and a selection of sweet pies (hand pies and slices). Being a big supporter of small businesses, I ordered 4. All I can say is I'm super happy I don't live closer. The chicken bacon hand pie was delicious. Big pieces of chicken in a flavorful creamy sauce. There may have been some vegetables in it but I was driving and it was unsafe to inspect my pie closely. The caramel apple hand pie was good. Because I'm not an apple pie fan I appreciated that the apples were sliced thinly, not chunky, and I loved the addition of the sanding sugar on top. I ordered the apricot frangipane (AF) for two reasons: it was double-crusted and it didn't have whipped cream on top. I wasn't totally on board with frangipane since my experience with it in boxed chocolates was "meh." Plus they seem to love it on the Great British Bake-Off and it always looks so unappealing. But paired with the tartness of the apricots and a crust that reminded me of shortbread, I think the AF was my favorite, though I haven't tried the blueberry lemon yet. If you love pie, go to Pie Dreams and have a slice or three (no judgment here). If you're not sure or don't think you like pie, go to Pie Dreams. You may surprise yourself.

The coconut pudding pie was sooo good, loved the texture and flavor, they had toasted coconut on the side to add on top. The fresh silk pie was my favorite! It was not overly chocolatey and had a nice mousse texture, there was an under layer of crisp ganache that made all the flavors and textures pop! The crust is nice and buttery and flakey. These were not heavy pies, just creamy light melt in your mouth. They also have frozen pies so you can take and bake yourself.
