Probably one of my favorite bakeries in the Bay Area for a variety of reasons. 1. They made our west coast wedding cake and indicated their icing limitations when we are trying to have the customary non-white design to honor my husband's family. One word to the wise about their wedding cakes, while they are gorgeous and ready for pickup on time, they are not easy to transport because they do not carry the appropriate cake box sizes. This was my experience and it may have changed so that's just a word to the wise. 2. They have extremely helpful staff they are never pushy, but can tell you about there seasonal items etc. 3. They carry my one of my favorite desserts -- green tea matcha cake that has whipped cream, chocolate, and strawberries. First time in this bakery/chain and I enjoyed it. Many of the items are like moon cakes or small pieces, which was also expensive and not my taste. There are many food here I didn't like but the mocha cake slice and brioche stood out, which I'm glad I took. The mocha cake had that roasted coffee taste and now too sweet. Noticed this bakery on a recent visit to Rawasf when we were parking and decided to venture on in because what person doesn't get intrigued by baked goods? It's small with a rather limited selection but we happily grabbed an assortment of goodies-- a couple of yummy fluffy, sweet and savory pork buns as well as a taro bun. We made it out under $6 which was cheaper than we expected and when we got home enjoyed the heck out of our goodies. A definite win. read more

This bakery is located in one of the main plazas in Milpitas. It's very easy to spot, but parking is always difficult. It does depend on the time you come. But it seems to be busy all the time.. I came here to buy a birthday cake for one of my friends. My friend loves taro and I was trying to see if they offer any taro cakes here, and they do! It's like one in a million. There's literally one in the entire store. I've never actually had taro flavored cake (like an actual cake and not the sponge-y ones or anything), so I wasn't sure how it could turn out. It was around $30 with tax. It was a little pricey, but I do understand since it's made fresh daily and it is an Asian bakery. I don't know why, but it's always pricey... But to my surprise, the cake was so delicious! The reason why I Asian cakes the most is that they are not too sweet! Most cakes from American bakeries or stores are way too sweet! But here at Sheng Kee, the cake was absolutely delicious! The filling wasn't too sweet and the frosting wasn't either. The taro blended very well into the cake. It had fruits on top like most Asian cakes, and then several taro and sponge-y layers below. It was very soft and sponge-y, without being too sweet! Hooray! Admittedly, I'm not a huge fan of these type of bakeries. But the Mango Mousse Cake is delicious! Grabbed this cake for my pops' birthday today and it's a definite winner. It has an authentic mango taste and it's not crazy sweet like American cakes. It's the perfect dessert for the anti-dessert crowd or the person who thinks everything is too sweet. (We all know someone like that.) Very simple cake, in that it is composed of just mango mousse (almost like a flan, texturally) and a white sponge cake, but it's one of those instances where less is really more. Nothing fake, heavy, or overdone about this cake. And it's decorated beautifully with fresh fruit and white chocolate pieces. I'm a fan. As for other items I've tried, I've had some of the sponge roll slices and the Ham & Mushroom Bun. The sponge rolls slices are okay. They're soft, not too sweet, and taste mildly of the fruit they're named for. The Ham & Mushroom Bun is pretty fantastic. I was driving when I first had one and I just couldn't put the thing down! It has ham, mushroom, peppers, and some kinda mayo concoction on top. Could totally pass for a portable meal. Just beware it is greasy and can get messy. This is a great bakery for Asian cakes, pastries, and bread. I wanted to come here early to pick up a cake, and I was glad they were open when I got there (9:05am). I noticed a lot of the items were still missing, so they were still stocking the shelves with food. There was a good selection of cakes already in the display case, but I didn't see a taro cake. I asked the worker, and she informed me there is one in the back. I had to wait about 5 minutes for the cake to come out. When it came out, the cake was beautifully decorated with strawberries, kiwis, and peach slices on the top. The cake decorator was able to write 'Happy Birthday' on a piece of chocolate, too. The cake cost $24.95 for an 8 inch round. The cake was fluffy and good. The taro filling was a bit sweet though. I'll definitely want to try other cakes here. =) read more

It has been a looooong time since I last visited this place, but I've suddenly got the craving for their chicken (curry?) pie. That's pretty much the only thing I would buy at this place, with the occasional pineapple buns (a biteful of carbs with a sweet yellow crumbly top). Everything else, I would pick up at a standard "cheap" Chinese bakery. I still remember the days when egg tarts were several for a dollar and gai mei bao was a quarter each. I can't bring myself to paying a premium at a high end bakery. At the end of the day, hole in the wall or fancy bakery, it's still going to be delicious. Back to the chicken pies....in a few words: warm-buttery-flaky-goodness. It's basically a flaky crust with a chicken curry filling. It's a delicious savory snack. Very difficult to eat this without making a mess. I've eaten this a few times while driving, and by the time I'm parked at my destination, it looks like I seriously need some Head & Shoulders as there are flakes all over my lap. I recommend eating over a piece of paper, so after you're sad that it's all gone, you can funnel the flake crumbs into your mouth for one last bite. read more

Long Story: I have been coming here for the past 3 years and this place has been consistent in its products, service, and quality. Most of the bakery items are usually in stock. Though the pork buns with green onion tends to run out quickly. Also, the amount you get tends to get smaller over time. I'm guessing they don't want to raise prices as their cost goes up so they cut back on how much each serving size is. I have always enjoyed checking out all the goodies offered by the various Chinese bakeries in the area. I especially like the offerings from Sheng Kee and Kee Wah. Take heed that the availability of a specific pastry will depend on the day of the week and time of day. So, we came in here and "took no prisoners", leaving with a full bag of treats for each and everyone of us! Each pastry had their own personality; all were very good! My one complaint is the parking situation for the shopping center. Sheng Kee has some really tasty pastries! I have not had all of their offerings but I've tasted a few. Most of the ones I've tried were really delicious! My favorites are the Coconut Cream and Custard Bun. They are not too sweet, but sweet enough to be delicious! The bread that they use on the Coconut Cream is so soft and airy. In addition to the sweet delights, they also offer some savory pastries such as BBQ Pork buns, Chicken pies, and Curry Beef pastries. Of the meat pies that they offer, I like the Curry Beef Pastry. It has a very good flavor. I'm glad that this location is not too close to home, cause if it was, I might find myself in Sheng Kee everyday! Their prices are very reasonable. I prefer Sheng Kee to Kee Wah because of the softness of their bread. This location open its doors at 8 am. Perfect for early morning people such as myself. This bakery is located in a strip mall next to a Lions Supermarket. This place is small, I would describe it as a hole-in-a-wall. But it is not the size of the bakery that counts, rather it's the quality and taste of the product. And the product is delicious. The one criticism I have is the parking. It can be very difficult to find parking depending on what time during the day you arrive. If you are unfortunate enough to find yourself at this strip mall during lunch time, be prepared to drive around looking for a parking space. I found myself in that situation today! It took me about 20 minutes to find parking, and I consider myself lucky! But all that aggravation over parking went away once I got home and bit into one of the pastries. I came here about a week before shelter in place was enforced and I came in at around 830 am. They just finished baking taro buns so I decided to eat one for myself and oh my goodness, it was SO GOOD. I have to put an emphasis on so good because eating them straight from the oven is the ideal way to eat them. The top was flaky while the bottom and inside were still warm, yet not scalding hot. I really liked how the taro filling was evenly distributed unlike other places that I go to where there's just taro in the center and that's the end of that. I came here to pick-up a cake for a company function. We got a full sheet of cake from this bakery. Someone else had ordered it and I was the one to pick-it-up. When I came here, it was during the lunch hour, and I had forgotten that the Lion Shopping Mall has an issue of too many stores and restaurants but not enough parking spaces for everyone when it is busy. In the end, I had to park in the back lot - it was fine but would have wanted to park in the front. The bakery is a small inside but it has many pre-packaged bakery items on the shelves to choose from. The refrigerated cakes looked great and yummy. Prices were reasonable for everything offered. Service was great. Even the baker, who came out of the kitchen, greeted me nicely. The taste of the cake, which I picked-up was great - not too sweet, and it was moist. i've been coming here ordering cakes and buying sponge cakes or buns for a long time. i love their cakes because they aren't TOO SWEET to the point you are about to get diabetes and sugar high! they have just the right amount of sweetness in them. My family loves to their Tiramisu cake (~$22). Each bite is like heaven in my mouth! LOL its not too sweet and not too bitter from the chocolate. LOVES IT!!! they also sell it in slices too if you don't want to buy the WHOLE cake (~$2.50 a slice) I also love their Japanese cheesecake! like i said before about all their other cakes, its not too sweet, just the right amount of sweetness. However, I was very disappointed to find that even though this place was larger than the Union City store, there are MUCH fewer selections. This was as huge let down. As I looked around, certain pastries seemed to be on the smaller side too (i.e. their croissants). As a result, I decided to settle on the hot pastries, thinking how could they mess that one up? Well, they could. There was very little filling in my BBQ as well as custard pastries. I was hard pressed to find the BBQ pork at all and it seemed like the custard in my custard tart was filled just enough to cover the tart shell. FAIL. I have finally come to the conclusion that bakeries are dangerous for me because I always end up walking in just to 'browse' but walk out with no less than 5 pastries. At Sheng Kee, its worse, I easily walk out with 10 pastries and I'll shove two of them in my face in one day [not at the same time of course] It's the aroma you smell when you step in that traps you. They have a great selection of bread, from 5 grain, wheat, cream cheese, red bean, pork sung, pineapple raisin... you get the gist.. I could go on and on. They also have a variety of pineapple buns, plain, red bean, taro and my favorite raisin custard. This trip I went in to get the Sesame Pastry. If you like Black Sesame, you'll love this. It's encased in a flaky pastry with black sesame inside, with a gooey mochi right dab in the middle. It's a mouthgasm, which is why I bought 5 of them. Deadly little things, the size of a quarter of my palm and its 320 calories! My family always buys the fruit covered birthday cakes from Sheng Kee. Glazed peaches, Kiwi and Strawberries that cover a spongy Japanese Cheese Cake as they call it, although to me, it just tastes like a regular sponge cake, but I still love it. Their egg tarts are good, there's not an overly amount of the pastry and more of the egg custard that i love, but it's still not as good as the ones in SF. They used to have specials at night, but I think too many people knew about the specials and didn't come until then, so they stopped it. I might be dating myself but, does anyone remember La Petite Boulangerie? I remember they used to be located in the malls. I miss LPB...actually, the 80's in general. Okay, I just dated myself. :P But I remember there was this one loaf of bread I loved at LPB, it was a wide loaf, tied into knots with sesame seeds on top. I took a really late lunch today so it was the best time to check out Milpitas Square. I walked in to Sheng Kee Bakery just to look around since I'm a fool for bread and pastries. I've been to this location when it first opened a good 10-years ago and haven't been back since today, mostly because it's madness in the plaza during the lunch hour. So, while inside perusing, I noticed a loaf of bread that looked similar to what I remember at LPB. It was their "Egg Bread" so I bought a loaf, $2.89 wasn't too bad. They also had a ton of different bread, pastries and cake products. The pastries didn't catch my eye, probably because of the "Twinkie" effect (no gay innuendo) meaning, it's wrapped in celophane which ultimately makes me question the freshness factor. I've been spoiled by freshness of Paris Baguette in Santa Clara, but I'm sure SKB's products taste good too. So I just grabbed a piece of bread and tasted it and wow, my childhood thoughts of LPB just hit my palate once again. It tasted quite familiar, just like I remembered that bread at LPB. Gotta love bakery bread compared to Wonder Bread at the store!! I love it when my childhood comes back, cuz trust me, it's a loooong trip! This place has good baked stuff, but don't bother coming here near closing time. There is always going to be some greedy moron who will grab nearly everything 45 minutes before closing and stack his/her tray 3 feet high. That glutton will then stand by the side of the line, shamelessly waiting until they start declaring that the buns are 50% off, while everyone walking into the store goes "WTF, where did all the buns go?" or "is he/she really planning to eat all that?". It sucks that the people who run the bakery don't set a limit per customer or prohibit the rabid squirrels from hoarding everything 1 hour before closing. The cake we ordered tasted decent for Chinese cake. It wasn't dry and cardboard tasting like some other Chinese cakes I've had. However, the store should always have someone who has a good command of the English language working at all times. I phoned in my order and it was painful. I needed one modification on the cake I wanted, and the exchange was confusing because of the woman's heavy accent and her inability to pronounce the letter "r". The conversation had to consist of the words "white" and "write". You can imagine how frustrated I got after awhile. In addition, when my husband picked up the cake, they had spelled the word "welcome" wrong. They spelled it "wecome". Really, people? I hate to say it, but you're in America now. Plus I'm sure someone there has a smart phone (they are Asian after all). Look it up if you don't know how to spell a word! My husband made them rewrite it, but the lettering looked awful. The penmanship looked like that of my 6 year old niece. So, I always walk by this place and I've never gone in until recently. My mom always goes here and buys pastries. I just assumed it's like any other bakery. Well one day, my mom decided to go and visit me at work after coming to the bakery. She brought me a blueberry pastry and two red bean pastries. Well that blueberry pastry was so yumtastic. I love blueberries so I've been coming in once or twice a week just to get some. There might be better blueberry pastries out there but these are the best ones I've had so far. I love Sheng Kee Bakery because of their wonderful, affordable food! So when I was in high school, I would frequent t his place because of their yummy buns. I thought this place was special, but apparently its a Hong Kong thing? But anyway, I loved taking my tray and my tongs and going around and picking out all the yummy buns. My favorites were always the hot dog and cheese bun, ham and cheese bun, and the bbq pork bun. The breads were always very fresh and they were the perfect after school snack. I especially loved that you could stick it in the fridge and eat it the next day, or even the day after that and it would still be soft. I've also sampled a couple of their cakes and rolls and they are wonderful. Their mango mousse cake is my fave--- the mango taste is just sweet enough, but not overpowering. AND the best thing is it isn't super sweet.... I've got a family of diabetics so I've gotta watch the sugary stuff. Their chocolate rolls and their mocha rolls are also wonderful. Just the right amount of frosting in the middles! LASTLY this place has the most wonderful egg tarts--- the closest I've had to the yummy Portuguese egg tarts I had in Macau.... only bad thing is they put it in a little foil tin so I can't nuke it :( Oh and one last bad thing.... The people at this branch are kind of rude to my husband and white people in general. That's why I go to the one in Union City with the younger wait staff that are more modern in their outlook.
