I brought my 2021 Audi Q5 to the Shell station on P St., NW in Dupont Circle after it developed a…read moresevere coolant leak 1-block away. I was understandably concerned because coolant was pouring out from underneath the vehicle. T.J. (the lead mechanic) charged me $168 for a diagnosis and told me that the water pump had failed. I was specifically told that the cooling system had been pressure-tested and that the water pump was the source of the leak. Based on that diagnosis, I was advised not to drive the car and ultimately had to arrange for the vehicle to be towed to Audi. Audi Annapolis subsequently inspected the vehicle and determined that the water pump was not the problem. The actual failure was a faulty pressure-release valve in the coolant reservoir cap -- a $33 part. The Audi technician showed me a video of the faulty cap and the subsequent pressure test demonstrating that the system held pressure after the cap was replaced. The car has been running perfectly since. The incorrect diagnosis cost me not only the $168 diagnostic fee, but also roughly another $400 in towing, transportation, and additional diagnostic/repair costs that would not have been necessary had the problem been correctly identified in the first place. Mistakes happen, but telling a customer that a component has been identified through a pressure test when it turns out not to be the source of the leak is a serious concern. I would have been much more understanding if I had simply been told that the water pump was a suspicion rather than a confirmed diagnosis. $33 cap. $168 diagnosis. $400+ additional expense. I would strongly recommend getting a second opinion before authorizing any significant repair based on a diagnosis from this shop.

I drove straight to SVE, knowing how helpful they always are. David was on night duty and he carefully checked the pressure in all four tires, identifying the one with low air and making sure it was safe. I am so grateful to him. This is just one example of how everyone who works at this station contributes to the community, tries to be helpful, etc. SVE under its new management reminds me of the neighborhood gas stations of my youth.
