I've passed Sheldrake Coffee Roasting countless times over the years. I often run across the street to visit the Wells Fargo branch, parking right in front, but somehow I never made my way inside. Today, with a little extra time before work, I decided to stop in and enjoy a simple cup of drip coffee, and I'm glad I did. The baristas behind the counter were incredibly friendly, and one of the longtime employees seemed to know all of the regulars by name. As I sat and enjoyed my coffee, it was great to watch the genuine connections she had with customers. That personal touch is something you don't see everywhere anymore. The interior has a unique charm, with a wide variety of coffee blends on display and plenty of breakfast options to choose from. It has the kind of atmosphere that makes you want to linger a little longer and could easily become part of your regular routine. I also really enjoyed the outdoor patio, which offers several tables and a perfect spot to relax with a cup of coffee and take in the Belmont Shore atmosphere. I'll definitely be back. STEPH JUDGEMENT: Fine coffee and service, but they really need their own bathroom. I was meeting up with a friend in Belmont shore and suggested this place, as I'd never been and wanted to try a new place. The interior had a quaint, old timey look, with lots of oak and antiquey stuff. They're also a roaster, and you could see all the roasting machinery in the back, which was cool. I got a hot latte (fine) and found a spot at a patio table. I forget what was here before, but it looked as though they kept all the old patio furniture--things were a bit worn. But I should also note that their drink prices were a little lower than some of the fancier places, and the service was friendly. The thing that made me deduct a star, though, was their lack of a bathroom. They directed me to go to the hamburger restaurant Win-Dow next door and use their bathroom. The people there were very nice and I grabbed a key to get into their outside bathroom--gas station-style. As with most gas station bathrooms, it wasn't great but I was grateful they had that at least. I understand that Sheldrake isn't responsible for the state of that bathroom, but it was inconvenient and I'd just prefer to go to a place that has a restroom. read more

This coffee shop is such a hidden gem. The space is super cute, with both indoor and outdoor seating. The outdoor area has umbrellas that provide great shade, which makes it a perfect spot to study or just relax without feeling overheated. They also offer bagels, which is a nice bonus if you want something quick to eat with your coffee. One thing that stood out was the large machine in the back where they process their coffee beans. If you're into coffee, it's actually pretty cool to see that part of the process happening in-house. I ordered a blended mocha and it had a great, rich coffee flavor without being overly sweet, which I really appreciated. The staff were friendly, welcoming, and genuinely seemed to know a lot of their regulars, which gives the place a warm, community feel. The only reason for the slightly imperfect rating is the inconsistency with the Americanos I've ordered on different visits. The first time, it was probably the best Americano I've ever had, topped with an incredible, frosty brown crema. The second time, with a different barista, it tasted more like a standard Americano from a fast-food coffee chain. The shop itself feels like a museum, featuring heavy manual scales and a giant roasting machine like a size of a 1950s computer lab. A few notes for the next managers meeting however: 1) The interior environment would be greatly enhanced by a few large Boston ferns and more beautiful plants inside and out. The expense would be minimal if Mike were to partner with a local florist/ nursery and I'm sure that business would appreciate the addition exposure. 2) A suggested topic for the next tip jars survey could be "OF COURSE" vs. "MY PLEASURE". I had been looking for freshly roasted coffee beans since I bought a new coffee machine. I called Sheldrake's, discovered that they roast beans every day, and went in. The smell of freshly roasted coffee beans is heaven. The person helping me was knowledgeable and helpful. I ended up leaving with the French roast, which is what they use for their house coffee drinks. I also got a dark blend. Both are superb. They have a whiteboard that shows a weekly list of which coffee they roast each day so you can time your trip perfectly. I ordered an Americano with breve (a combination of half whole milk, half half-and-half) steamed into a velvety foam) which was delightful. And my daughter had a Black Velvet blended cold drink which included dark, rich chocolate, house blend espresso, and freshly roasted/ground coffee grounds and was so so good! I will be hav a lot of fun with my new machine and Sheldrake's freshly roasted coffee beans. read more

Was next door getting some foods and the smell and the patio drawn in. Very great vibe and the smell is just heavy. They do take their coffee seriously here, you can ask and request how you would like or you can get some recommendations from them. I just got regular brewed since I need to be awake so it was great and did it job. They do have a patio and it looks fun and enjoyable. There is a parking lot and it's free too. Delicious coffee with a selection of pastries, my only complaint they run out of bananas often it seems as the last few visits I was unable to get a banana mocha but settled on an ice blended mocha. Tried the black velvet too. Haven't tried the pastries. Parking lot can get rather full since it shares a lot with other businesses. A long time standing business with decently speedy service and a nice lounge section for enjoying a drink here with lots of newspapers to catch up on the local news. Having lunch next to this shop and the amazing aroma drew us over. Hot damn 10x the aroma inside, I could live here. Really kewl roasting shop with most everything in view. I appreciate the milk options and they had 2% and NF. The guy who made my drink looked serious about making it right and it was probably the BEST iced mocha I have had. Drip coffee made fresh daily with a large variety of roasted beans to choose from including at least 5 decaf options. I ordered a cafè au lait with whipped cream with Vienna decaf roast. This would be a 6-star place if only they allowed customers to use their bathroom. I love the vibe, the brightness of the room, the roasters in the back (that who I think is the owner let us get close to while he was roasting peanuts when we were there - super nice), the chill vibe that is totally conducive to doing some work or some reading. I know they used to allow people to use their bathrooms in the past, so I don't know what happened, but my stomach is often squirrelly, and we had to leave abruptly so I could find facilities, which is unfortunate, because I would have liked to hang out there for longer, get a snack or another coffee, and make it a more regular place for us to go when we're in Long Beach. I don't think they quite run afoul of California bathroom laws for places that serve food (they have a sign on the door), but it's a damn shame, because I could have fallen in love with this place and we could have had a wonderful long term relationship. 04.03.2024 "Take Your Wife to Work Day" Spring Break 2024 Hubby and I stopped here after visiting a couple of his accounts in the Long Beach area. I looked up coffee and this was one of a few shops on 2nd Street that popped up. This cute little coffee shop also roasts a variety of coffee beans. The employees were friendly and the inside of the shop was comfy and cozy. The enclosed patio was perfect on this warm, sunny SoCal morning. The mocha lattes were a nice mix of hot, sweet and just the right amount of chocolate for me. We forgot to ask what beans these were. The plus side was I didn't have to add any sweetener. Yes, sadly I've had to add sweetener to mocha lattes in the past. The bakery case did not have anything appealing to us today. All items were individually wrapped. I'm not sure who they get their baked goods from. I noticed there were some bagels, a few pastries, and a couple of scones. After enjoying our mocha lattes in their sunny patio we had to get back on the road to visit more accounts. Before leaving we picked up a couple of bags of beans for our cousin to pull and for us to try. We can't wait! read more

This is a such a cute old fashion coffee shop. It gives rustic vibes. And I believe this was family generation passed down coffee shop. I love how they have this coffee roaster machine all the way from German and roast their own coffee. They have a roast coffee scheduling telling you what coffee beans from the world they roast. They have a variety of coffee beans and teas from all the world like Ethiopia, Guatemala. They have free wifi to work on but no public restrooms. I will say it's a little bit hard to concentrate with the coffee roasting machine making noise, so maybe work out on their outside patio, which you can get plenty of sun. They even got a shared parking lot for customers. Also, I love how they're a business that you can bring your own reusable cup. I got the iced pumpkin spice latte. You can taste the grittiness and freshness of the roasted coffee beans. Go and help support their local business. read more

If I could leave negative stars I would! There's one thing to have good coffee but there's another to be supportive of verbal assault. Witnessed a female customer be verbally assaulted by another customer and the manager of this business hop in and add to the assault. None of the staff thought to stop the attack, they just stood by and agreed with the man attacking a female customer and her dog. 2nd street is known to be dog friendly and this business does not have a sign stating THEY ARE NOT DOG FRIENDLY. The manager did nothing to stop the confrontation instead he said, "technically you're not supposed to have your dog here". The woman's dog barked non aggressively because she wanted attention and another male customer quickly stood up to yell at the female about how she shouldn't be out with her dog. Im disappointed that this business did nothing to stop the confrontation and now know my dog and others customers dogs ARE NOT WELCOME. read more

The baristas were helpful but not very inviting or welcoming. Almost like it was pulling teeth for them to help us. We are not rude customers so it was awkward to order. We each got a pour over, both tasted burnt, 7/11 has better coffee, and that's not an insult to 7/11, cause when that coffee hits it HITS. The coffees were so underwhelming and lacking any body. Loved this coffee/tea shop! It's a second street classic that I should be visiting way more. There's ample seating and it's quieter, perfect for working. The service was nice and friendly. I got an iced tea that was nice and refreshing but they also have some pretty good coffee drinks, although I've only had the coffee once - since they specialize in coffee beans and roasting, I imagine their coffee is pretty bangin. !Only! Downside is that there are no public restrooms. I would've stayed longer but the entire tea I drank said I had to skedaddle. I'll be back forsure! read more

Only problem is there are only three tables so couldn't sit and check internet. Also not sure if they have restrooms. Overall good customer service and very nice coffee. The folks behind the counter are friendly and knowledgeable and always smiling. No gimmicks or trendy tricks, just honest passion for the craft. I can't speak authoritatively about their baked goods as I've only tried one of their 'freshness-challenged' bran muffins (which was delicious though). Little behind on my reviews, but checked out Sheldrake Coffee Roasting last weekend. Located on 2nd St in Long Beach, so it was a good weekend crowd. Walking into this place, no mistaking it was all about coffee (besides the cardboard surfboard they had for sale). I ordered an iced banana mocha with oat milk. I was not disappointed with the drink, it was delicious. Only thing that had me confused was that someone else I was with ordered the same drink with regular milk, and mine was much darker in color. So not sure if they use slightly different ingredients depending on which milk you request. Regardless it was good. They had so many different coffee beans for sale also, several I hadn't heard of. I will revisit this place for sure and also pick up a pound or so of the different beans they had in house. Only draw back, and my biggest pet peeve is only one size choice for coffee. read more
