I am just getting into specialty coffees and checking out local roasters. So, I made a trip to Sheldrake Coffee Roasting. An inviting little shop with great coffee smells. Beans are mostly medium dark roasted, daily according to its ads. I am looking for light roasted beans with citrus flavors but I settled for one bag of Ethiopian Yirgacheffe. It has been yielded consistent cups of great coffee every morning so far and I can tell why the shop chose to go with medium dark roast even for Yirgacheffe. I am willing to try other beans from Sheldrake. read more

I have bought whole bean coffee from so many places since then but Sheldrake is simply on a completely different level. Great beans, great selection and so freshly roasted. Incredible quality. My FAVORITE coffee place in all of Long Beach - and I feel I have really tried most if not all of them. Sheldrake is so so cozy and just smells like heaven. Instant mood boost. PARKING - even though Second St. is usually crazy busy and parking is always a problem, Sheldrake actually has their own lot which is JUST for them and one other fast food joint, so it is typically empty enough to find a space. Such a perk. You can order a drip coffee of whatever they have that day, or you can sample any of their beans in a pour-over - I love this because I would have no other opportunity to sample Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee, which is super expensive. My overall impression is that the owners are just truly passionate about coffee and want to share it with people who are also hyped! They have a pretty good selection of teas, and you can also buy any of their coffees to take home. When I am on a budget, I have asked for a scoop as small as 1/8 pound and they obliged. read more

Bad customer service and bad coffee. I ordered a simple latte, and it tasted burnt and bitter, like the espresso had been over-extracted. On top of that, the milk was barely frothed, making the whole drink feel flat and unpleasant. My friend got an iced coffee, which was ridiculously watered down and lacked any real flavor. For a place that claims to specialize in coffee, they definitely don't seem to know how to make it properly. read more

Terrible service and very rude. All they know how to make is straight black coffee for old people. And if you ask for anything other than that, even just a simple latte, they roll their eyes. The latte I was given was truly the worst, couldn't even finish it. Super watery, barely tasted like coffee. The atmosphere here is incredibly unwelcoming. Wouldn't recommend this spot. You have to try their cranberry muffin. It has real cranberries and sweet tart flavor unlike anywhere else. All of the muffins are good, but I would really recommend cranberry and lemon poppy seed. Also try their crushed velvet blended drink, it has ground espresso beans that give it a sort of saffron texture that I have never drank anywhere else. April is a sweetheart and she'll recommend you coffee from like the 50 options they have and even blended for you if you want! The patio is my favorite place, clean and sunny. read more

Sometimes, the answers pops up in front of you when you're not even looking! Jeff, Alana, and I were spending the day together. We selected Long Beach for our adventures and parked in a metered stall on 2nd Street because there's a bunch of shops and restaurants along this road. I looked up at the sign on the building that we parked in front of and it called out to me... Polly's Gourmet Coffee... My search was over! I remembered that my lunch buddy asked me for some coffee beans. He wanted something unusual that he couldn't get at home in Hawaii. It turns out that he grinds his own coffee at home! You wouldn't guess it from all of his Starbucks check ins! HAHA! Anyway, I had no clue of what to get or how much. We went inside the store, asked some questions, took a few photos, enjoyed the roasting coffee fragrance, and admired the cool decor! I've weened off of a caffeine addiction the past few years of my life, but WFH life has caught up to me and I need the extra dopamine rush to get me out of my PJs. Lucky for me there is a local roaster down the street to enable me to get snobby with my relapse. I love seeing how small businesses have adapted to these unprecedented times. Polly's has closed their indoor cafe and created a walk up window where customers interact with the staff via intercom. With a layer of plexiglass maintaining social distance it may seem like we are entering a cold sterile dystopian future but Polly's makes sure to keep the humanity by sending warmth and hospitality through the protective barriers. They quizzed me on what type of flavors I was looking for and how I planned on prepping it and then offered suggestions to fit my needs. I look forward to cycling through their blends and expanding my palette. I highly recommend this place for their quality product and service! read more

Love the coffee here. We order the whole beans and grind them at home. The smell is amazing ! Exceptional taste. Only issue we're having is every month for 3 months in a row our order is messed up. We have been ordering with delivery as we moved a few hours from Long Beach. We used to get the order the next day, two at most The last 2 months we ordered and paid for 5 lbs but got one Lb. The manager was very nice and sent out the rest of the order. But we were without beans waiting for the issue to be resolved. This month we ordered five days ago, still no coffee. Tracking shows label created but order not sent yet. Called this morning. They said no they have no orders pending but would check. Sure enough our order was sitting there in the corner. Nobody sent it out. I'll give it one more try but if they can't get the shipping situation in order, I'll sadly be forced to look elsewhere for my beans. I visited Polly's on a weekday afternoon. This is a small, quiet, and cute coffee shop at the end of 2nd Street. There is a private parking lot for cars and a bike rack in the front if you choose to ride your bike. They have a nice selection of coffee and a few pastry items. There are a few tables and chairs and a small sofa with a couple of people on their computers. Compared to Peet's or Starbucks that are located down the street, Polly's provides you with a quieter, smaller, and homey vibe coffee shop. It's a great place to relax, enjoy coffee, and read a book or people and dog watch. read more

Been here 3 times because wanted to give it a chance. I ordered a large coffee and got hot water with a hint of coffee favor. I put one packet of splenda and it was super sweet. I go to other coffee shops and need 2 splenda packs. This coffee is mostly WATER!. Also the pastries are day old at best and the pastry counter mostly empty. I think they try and sell out before restocking so you get 1 or 2 day old pastries. As far as service they are not rude but certainly not friendly. Tried to start a conversation and were not interested. It was " here is your coffee not get out" my gut feeling is this place is in a financial conserve mode. This isn't your typical modern-looking coffee shop but it gives off a very historic and cozy, small-town type of vibe. I love it! It's in a convenient location on 2nd street where there are a bunch of other restaurants/bars/stores and it's easy to find street parking in the neighborhoods. I had some questions about the menu and the working was very knowledgable and helpful! They have a lavender flavored syrup that I asked about and he mentioned that it goes well with almost about everything. So, I tried the iced coffee with lavender syrup. He didn't want the drink to be overly sweet for my taste so he started out with a little and was willing to adjust the flavors as needed. However, it was just the perfect amount of sweetness and lavender taste the first time around! It complemented the coffee perfectly with a slight hint of sweetness that didn't taste just like pure sugar. Their coffee tasted fresh as well! I left . called michael only to be ridiculed he suggested I seek help. hope Michael seeks help himself. This is my very favorite coffee shop in all of Long Beach. The baristas are friendly, the coffee is delicious, and the prices are fair. They don't let customers bring dogs in anymore, which I heard is because they had an incident with dogs fighting in the shop (so that's understandable), but they will still make us a pup-u-ccino to take outside to our dog. Oh and the free rewards program is great and we earn free coffee all the time. read more

Polly's Gourmet Coffee is a Belmont Shore neighborhood favorite. Polly's has been around since 1976... yep, 42 years! So, they're doing A-LOT right! If you've ever driven down 2nd street you can't help but enjoy the aroma of the coffee roasting in their store! Draw everyone right in! Polly's roasts their own coffee beans all day... every day! There is a beautiful display of the very large variety of coffee beans available for sale. The courteous staff is always prepared to answer any questions and grind your selection to the desired consistency. This is great because I enjoy making Turkish coffee at home which requires the beans be ground to an almost powder consistency. In addition to the whole beans they offer they prepare a wide variety of brewed coffee and tea options to enjoy on the spot! My very favorite whole bean coffee selection is 1/2 Italian Roast and 1/2 French Roast left whole so I can grind them daily for breakfast. Or, the Polly's Breakfast blend is also delicious! In addition to the coffee beans, coffee drinks, and delicious pastries Polly's is just an all-round great place to hang out. Everyone is always friendly, kind, and welcoming. read more

This is a cute spot. Really antiquey feel. You can park on the street or in a little parking lot next door. It doesn't have too many spots but if you're lucky, it's there. Seating indoors and out. Plenty of space to move around. Not packed like Starbucks, at least not when I went. There are a few sofas and tables inside and a nice little patio with umbrellas. Really nice. I had my favorite, Chai Latte. It was DELICIOUS. Better than that other coffee place. It was deliciously sweet and smooth. She offered to add an espresso shot to make it a dirty Chai but I said no. It was good the way it was and relaxing. I also had a croissant. Really nice and fluffy. The hubby got a muffin but he ate it in 2 bites so I didn't get a chance to try it :( I guess it was good. I was very saddened when Peet's closed 2nd as (1) They open super early (2) Always had the best tea (3) have many vegan options including scones (4) Had delicious loose leaf tea I could buy that was not expensive (5) always had the choicest classical music or soft jazz and best service. When they closed I'd thought I try Polly's as I despise Starbuck's and didn't like Philz either. I give Polly's 3 stars. What I found: 1. GO EARLY: Janet is an excellent barrister and the morning crew are super friendly and efficient while after noon crew sometimes don't know what they are doing, make constant mistakes and get simple orders wrong. Their inefficiency creates super long lines . It is i ridiculous to have to wait in mask for over 15 minutes for just iced tea. 2. I appreciate the loose leaf tea however since each tea is made from scratch... please have experienced barristers. Janet always gets my tea right. But I have super weak watery tea, ice tea where the they just poured hot water into plastic ( I don't want to taste plastic). Would be much better if they brewed a few flavors of iced tea in the morning to have ready. 3. Muffins/pastries: Ok in the morning when hot out of the oven but no where near the best I have had. Mediocre selection. Even at 7 am... I have been told we are out of this or that. No vegan scone or muffin selections. (Would be a smart move as so many vegans are in the area and don't like to drive all the way to Peet's in Seal Beach). I'm a vegan cook so if you need vegan scone recipes I'll send them to Polly's. 4. Price gauging in the afternoon. I originally wrote a 2 star because I was super pissed when in the afternoon I was charged $1.00 more then required. Large tea and a muffin should come to $5.75 not $6.75. When I told the barrister in the afternoon she stated they raised prices.. when prices are clearly marked on the window. I saw many mistakes with the kids that work there in the afternoon. The barrister was also super rude in the afternoon and told me "if I didn't like it .. I could go somewhere else." She also refused to take my number for points and said their system was down when I I have been going to Polly's for about 2 year years and could see clearly the system was up. (laziness.. and between she customers she was talking on her cell). However in contrast the two ladies in the morning Janet and the other girl are super professional, friendly and efficient. 5. I know Polly's is doing their best with social distancing etc. but I find it super annoying in the afternoon when one can even park in the parking lot because the senior citizens pull out their lounge chairs and hog up the whole parking lot. Crazy. And with the patrolling security .. you'd think something would be done about it. It is amazing how difficult it is to find a choice cup of tea and scone after Covid. I do appreciate overall the morning service at Polly's. I also wish Polly's would go paper cups on iced drinks. Plastic is so bad for the environment. Thanks read more

Or at least this one particular curly haired female with glasses who must really hate her job! Eye rolling, sarcastic remarks, dramatic attitude... the whole Shebang! First time trying Polly's coffee beans this week as I was looking for a cheaper option from my usual Lord Windsor $20/lb coffee I usually buy. I don't think I will ever buy anyone elses beans again now that I've tried Polly's. Walking into the shop, I could feel this place had a history. As I started looking at the huge wooden display of beans, I was immediately helped by someone behind the counter. This employee taught me about the different beans they had and even let me sample some coffee, which I'm so glad because the decaf l wanted was really bitter. Instead, she hooked me up with La Minita, a lightly roasted bean that tastes incredible and a seasonal chocolate Irish cream. She told me they don't use artificial flavoring, they use oils, so when something is flavored, you are really tasting through your nose. Buy your beans here, they're really good and there's a huge variety to choose from. read more

Very cute little coffee shop on trendy second street jn the Belmont Shores area of Long Beach. Tiny interior and a large outside patio glassed in to minimize wind and noise. Good people watching. Interior is small and the couch area was busy with a retired group of men. Tiny two person tables. Outside lots of seating but it can be cold and windy. They have a nice selection of pastries. Ambiance: * Parking | There is street parking and if you're lucky, parking in the back. It is a pretty busy place so plan accordingly and be patient. As for parking near the houses, you would need a permit. * Seating | The space is fairly small. Probably 8 people or 4 groups can sit in the front. There is more seating outside though. * Feels | It is very old school-esque like. Pictures are all vintage and in the far back you see the machines where the coffee is brewed or grinded. 50s music is playing in the background if you're into that stuff. Food: Iced chai tea latte- It was a delicious experience, at times I experience a water down over flavorless however this was rich with cinnamon. Customer Service: The baristas were quick, while one upsold and not lied on how good the chai tea latte was another barista rang my order. Overall: I give this place 4 stars. The price was affordable, the baristas were fast and friendly, and my chai was delicious. I enjoyed the company and the ambiance. As much as I'm an outdoor person, I do wish there was more inside seating. I wouldn't come back to study here though, but more recommended to socializing or reading a book. Polly's is a 2nd street staple that supplies *very* good freshly roasted coffee for numerous restaurants around Long Beach. It's also a popular pit stop for many local faces and competitive biking teams, so there is a certain sentimentality about it in the community. However...as a coffee shop/cafe, this place is a poorly run dump. Staff is mostly nice, definitely a few stand-outs on the team I wouldn't want to slight, but several are strangely and similarly aloof, perhaps due to inexperience, and to a large degree certainly due to a lack of training in customer service. Training in preparation is unfortunately the bare minimum, so quality is hit or miss. Don't bother with the cold brew or a tea, no one cares. And you don't have to sit inside on a dirty couch for more than an hour to see customers walking out the door empty handed. Hang out past three and it's a constant stream of lost customers due to a dearth of sustenance. Management deems the buckets of muffin mix they've been incessantly buying for the last 15 years as sufficient and unimpeachable, and if there are any left at the end of the day it's obviously because there weren't enough customers to buy the delicious tired treats. Meanwhile Philz, and Starbucks, and The Coffee Bean, and Agua, and Portofino, the library, and so many others in LB are HAPPY to have Polly's business. Tl;dr: Best place to buy your beans, worst place to buy a cup of joe. Response to Ren D.: Ren, the only employee I'm experiencing poor service with is you...someone I have never seen at Polly's despite being a customer for years. Your employees don't wear name tags nor provide their names. The fact that you would even ask me to name an employee exposes the crux of the problem - management is clueless and absent. read more
