The worst experience in a berbershop ever. Allow me to take you through the sequence of terrible events in this terrible "establishment": 1- I walk in and ask for an opening, a man named Eugene sighs and takes me to a chair. He's not enthusiastic. That's fine, I'm here to pay for a service. 2- He starts slowly attempting to cut my hair and to "fade it". Simple right? A regular fade. That's all. 3- He cuts my neck and back of head multiple times with his rusty machine and keeps apologizing everytime my hairs get stuck in his cheap machine. I bleed a bit. 4- He blows on my neck throughout the whole cut to remove fallen hairs. Yes. As in he actually (with his mouth), blew on my neck. In a pandemic, and on my now-open cuts on my neck. He HAD a brush and a blowdryer that he used maybe twice. He thought blowing on me was more reliable maybe? Gross. [A Rabbi walks in, talks to me while I'm getting this terrible haircut in Hebrew. I told him I don't understand him and felt very awkward but my barber Eugene here kept laughing with him. The rabbi then went to use the bathroom, and came out of it to wash his hands using THE HAIR WASH STATION customers sit in!] Back to Eugene now: 5- He starts to sweat and gets worried and so he brings a towel to clean his sweat off while cutting my neck and the back of my head even more. 6- He shows me the back and there's a BALD line where he kept cutting me attempting to fade my hair. He then blames my hair being dark for it looking faded... He says "I can't do it"!! 7- Two other women barbers jump in just before Im about to confront this place to fix his mess on my wounded head and only then I get a haircut that isn't bad enough to wear a hat for 2 weeks. I tipped them, but didnt pay Sweeney Todd here. 8- I ended up buying medication to treat my cuts. Showering still hurts. Even a simple touch on the wounds stings. This place is incompetent and careless and should not allow those unable to perform a simple fade to hold equipment or be called barbers. It's also not hygienic nor professional at all. I suggest you go to any other store than here, unless you like the sight of blood or enjoy being hurt. Then take Eugene. read more

My original hair color is medium brown. I started highlighting many years ago. As the years went on everyone I went to seemed to think I just wanted to be blonder and blonder. I do not have gray hair so I always looked like a raccoon when it started to grow out, I hated the bright blond, and the texture was a disaster. Eva FINALLY understood. She brought the color down with subtile highlights that look natural. You can hardly tell when my hair grows out. Just what I have been trying to achieve for years! All of my friends and family have commented on how good it looks without having been asked! Maria cut my hair. She told me I probably would not like it for the first 2 weeks. This review is mainly for Maria, who cut my son's hair twice in the past year, during covid. Maria is just fantastic. She is skillful, careful, and extremely patient; definitely very good with small children. My son, who is now 2.5, kept his mask on during the entire time, and never cried or complained. So I originally had Lily for a haircut back in June 2021. I was in a rush and had to select a new place that was closer to my apartment which is always a stressful situation. My normal place is sadly a bit far from me now. Luckily, I had Yelp. Ummmmmm confession time, this comes after the disaster of self-administered quarantine cuts. With a mutual laugh and a lot of skill, she was able to fix this up and have me looking great for NYC Pride. I then circled back to snag another appointment recently but she was on vacation! Clearly superstars like her need a vacation, too. I was able to schedule an appointment with Igor and he took care of me. Decided to go here for my first Covid cut and based on the reviews chose Maria for my long, thick, wavy hair. Everyone is required to wear masks & the staff was diligent about sanitizing stations between clients. I was definitely not disappointed & will be back to see Maria. She gave me her honest opinion on how much to trim to make it look healthy again & keep as much length as possible. We added in long layers & she finished with a blow out. My hair hasn't looked this good in a really long time!! The prices here are super reasonable which allowed me to tip a bit more. I am very happy with the service I received. Updated review to rave about Eugene! I went for a keratin on Saturday and I'm floored by his talent, care and patience. First he walked me through the process and answered all my questions. The keratin is a lengthy process-HOURS- and he was incredibly patient and thorough. With each pass of the flat iron (10 times on each tiny section of my very thick hair) he blew to to cool my scalp and hair. Hundreds of times! And he was friendly and dedicated. I'm really impressed. I washed my hair today, it looks shiny and healthy. Just wash and go! Zero frizz. So happy. read more

Came here in a pinch because its in my hood. Full disclosure, I went to a couple of other places that were packed, my hair has thinned from chemo so this was to shave it off - pretty emotional moment. However, enter Igor - the barber who made me laugh, made the process less traumatic, and dude can shape up hair! Ends with either an offer of shampoo or a hot towel (i do the towel). I was an idiot and hadn't had a haircut in a year prior to COVID. Then I just doubled-down and decided "well, no one's seeing it except on Zoom!" That is...until I broke my wrist and could no longer even put my hair in its usual bun or even brush it. Awesome work done! Show them a prior photo of the hair you want and they will prep you. Had a great experience considering my hair was a bit long and grown out since the start of covid. Typically im not a fan of getting a haricut but Eugene knocked it out. As i stated i showed him a photo and he stated he could try to improve on the hair a bit which in the long term came out great. I lucked up on this place last minute and so glad I did. The service and friendliness of the staff and owner is first rate. They are just good, down to earth people who make you feel welcome and right at home. The salon is clean, refreshing, modern and has an excellent location with many amazing food options to choose from after your fresh cut. Igor cut my son's hair, which is curly and not easy to cut and style. I have tried many many barbers over the years for my son and noone got it right. Igor nailed it. He's a perfectionist and very detail oriented which makes the difference between being a good barber and a great barber. After checking out a couple barber shops in the area and not being fully satisfied, my roommate and I walked in here on a Sunday morning. They had 4 different stylists, which I thought was good to keep things moving. Neither of us had to wait longer than 5 minutes. I was very pleased with my haircut, and with the service. I've been coming to Sheer Madness for nearly 3 years now, exclusively seeing Lena. This review is long overdue. There is no better haircut for the price in this part of Brooklyn. Lena, and the rest of the shop staff are extremely friendly and offer fantastic, prompt service. I've paid 100+ dollars for haircuts at other salons before finding Sheer Madness, and without question I have never received a better haircut than Lena's. The attention to detail she offers is surgical-level - the haircuts are always consistently A+++ level. I don't often write reviews for businesses, but the consistent amazing cuts coming out of this shop is really truthfully more than deserving. Very thoughtful, thorough, and was both warm and professional the whole way through. I'm not sure what the guy's name was, but the name tag at the station said "Igor". He didn't listen to a word I said. I asked for a fade, and he buzzed everything down to the same length. Then I literally measured out how much I wanted off the top, and he took off multiple inches. I asked for a beard trim, and he cut it crooked, uneven and just all around badly. The "towel service" at the end was him roughly shoving a towel in my face and rubbing it around. At one point this dude looked at his own awful work (realizing he cut off way more than I asked for) and IN HIS OWN WORDS, said "I don't like it." Dude had the audacity to tell me to smile when I was clearly pissed at his complete lack of skill and customer service. Never coming back here again. You'd think spending $35 on a haircut/ beard trim would give you something decent. Now I have to wear a hat for a month while I wait for my hair to get back to a length where I can take my business somewhere halfway decent. read more

The vibe is good, the price is right and the barbers are great, namely @Maria (who has been my go to) - she's really good. It almost feels like she looks at each haircut as art, perfecting the cut to exactly what you want. I had an excellent experience here. The barber, who I sadly forgot their name, listened to what I wanted and gave me that exact haircut. It cost 30 dollars which is a little more expensive than I usually pay 20-25, but it was totally worth it, as this guy took his time and really gave me a solid haircut. First haircut in 8 months due to the Covid lockdown. Called and spoke to several, visited a few in the area. This is expensive hair. Usually only touched by hands at the fanciest salons. But we were hitting emergency status. At the very least I could get by with a trim and some layering. The trick is that in this neighborhood there are a lot of barbers. Not many places who were willing to cut and style long girls hair. I'm a guy but have long hair more like a girls. But Johnny at this place told me Maria was the bomb for girls hair. Made an appnt and went on in. Just opened. Minimal staff. Not fancy. Definitely not a typical manhattan high end salon. Small. Bare necessities. But what isn't these days post-Coronavirus? It's homey and cozy. Red brick walls. You get it. It's BKLN. Johnny is a cool young Russian guy who is crazy about drinking and America, friendly and eager to please. Maria is a hot blooded Russian siren who knows exactly what she wants. Doesn't mind sharing her ideas with you about your hair but she also listens to what you want. She did a fabulous job. Truly. My last cut cost twice as much and was 1/3 as good as what Maria did. It looks awesome. One is the best haircuts I've ever had. Seriously. The ladies on the promenade stop and stare. I keep walking and tell them "See Maria. Talk to Johnny. He'll set you up." read more

The haircut is OK, but it's just one of those places that is super unreliable about their hours (their website may say 6 pm, but they'll claim they close at 5 when you show up), and the waits can be interminable on the weekends or in the evenings (i.e. when people with jobs need haircuts). I'd like to give it a better rating, but they need to up their professionalism a bit first. read more
