Communication is really bad, they couldn't figure out whether my appointment was at the 12 Pell or 76 Mulberry location. When I get there I find out he's overbooked and running 20 minutes late, which is hilarious after getting so many texts from them to make sure I'm not late. I had plans after. It's a 45-minute cut. 20 minutes makes a difference! I was looking for a new barber, not a one-off cut. Once a dude acts flippant with my time, why bother? I scheduled about a month in advanced and very soon after he got booked up fast! So schedule early and soon guys! I am not from New York and was flying in. Would love to review how their barber's skills are but since their customer service is just so ridiculously poor and laughable, that won't happen, like ever. You not only pay $200 + for a barber's consultation and cut but they also have this "vip" service that you pay extra for on top of all that to try and get in a schedule of said barber of choice via text. The "vip" text goes unanswered and no updates provided either whether or not the barber can or cannot accommodate the time requested. When you call, you get someone who sounds sincere and all but it didn't even seem like they knew how their online craptastic system worked. This is the third time I've gotten my haircut here in the last year and a half. I've seen two different barbers. My first haircut I asked for an inch off and left with the shortest hair I've had in years. The cut I got today I asked for an inch or two trimmed in the back and have length halfway down my neck. The haircut I got back in March was perfect and I wanted to see the barber because of it. I came back to him and I got the result pictured. Wow it's been over a year since my first visit here and I always have a positive experience! When I was going through the phase of finding what works best for my hairstyle, I have continued my visits at 12 Pell with Franky. Do note that with this establishment being popular on social media from some of their reels and a positive reputation all across, it can be sometimes challenging to get an appointment. Currently it's not too bad since I always tend to book it 1-2 weeks in advance, since I know when I will be in NYC by then. You can even get appointments a day before if you don't care for what professional (from my experience, you can't go wrong with any one). Franky goes above and beyond every single visit, not only from a haircut perspective, but also on the styling of the hair and advice on keeping my hair healthy. He is also a good conversationalist, as I'm usually on the soft spoken side so other places they just simply do the haircut, you pay, and leave, but here, I feel like I get a more customized and personalized experience so that is an added touch. Maybe Franky takes notes or has good memory, but even if it has been 1 month or 3 months since the last visit, he still remembers some of what we talked about in previous visits. Through my visits, my hair style has improved quite a bit - starting from a relatively short top and growing it out and trying out different styles like the textured fringe and recently trying out a two block style haircut with a 1 fade. There are some hair styling products that you can buy that they use here, which is at retail price, no upcharges, with the convenience of getting the product instantly and I have personally gotten some that lasts quite a while. This is the place I would go whenever I have the excuse to go to NYC (as I don't live there at the moment) and that it's around the time I need a haircut, so it often comes to about 5-6 times a year. $45 for the regular cut + tip so around $60 give or take is on par with the industry for good haircut places, but my visits feel like there's more value than that compared to a standard haircut session back in Seattle charging a similar base price. I just moved to new york about a month and a half ago and I was so worried about getting a haircut because they usually turn out so bad.. It was not the case this time. I made an appointment with Josh Nguyen for a regular haircut, which was $65. I went in and showed him two photos and kind of explained what I wanted and he knew immediately what to do. Tim upped my hairstyle game so much and showed me what is possible! I had always let my hair grow completely naturally and my haircuts were basically the simplest buzz cuts. As a result, my hair made me look like a mushroom from the front and the shape of the back was very weird. Tim went over my face shape and hair type. He outlined that my jaw is really strong and my forehead is big. He asked what kinds of hair styles I was looking for. He was very patient trying out different hair styles to find one that look good on me. Eventually we went with a 70-30 split, which I had never considered before and was doubtful, but ended up looking really good after he really refined everything. Then he started cutting. He is an absolute pro at cutting hair. Especially since my hair is thin and thinning, it is really hard to create volume. But with his masterful cutting at angles to create edges, he managed to make my back look really incredible and my front really bring out my jawline. I never knew this was possible until Tim showed me the way! Finally, Tim showed me how to style my hair to make it look the best. For the past 6 months, I have gotten haircuts from Franky. I received so many compliments on my hair from friends, and my girlfriend said this is the best hairstyle she has seen on me. I mean, what more can you ask for? Franky is professional, talented, and a great communicator. I usually get a low fade, skin taper, 80/20 combover for my straight, Asian hair. Can a men's barbershop truly be 5 stars? I was skeptical but after our haircut there, I can say definitely! The 1st time consultation fee may seem high, but after experiencing it, I will say it's worth every penny. Peter was our stylist and took his time examining the hair and discussing and making recommendations. They even make a styling video for us to take home to refer to. There were pictures sent to us so our stylist back home could try to keep the style until we could get back to NYC. I also like the fact that they did not try to sell hair products to us as most salons do. Everything that was recommended was stuff we could buy ourselves online. After trying at least 5 other barbers, I can finally say 12pell, and specifically Julius will be getting my business for as long as he cuts hair. Super chill guy, gives great suggestions and his cuts grow in really nice. He cut my permed hair too and did a great job. Got styling, product, or hair maintenance questions? I waited until my girlfriend saw my haircut to write a review and needless to say, she was very pleased. Getting a fade was quite a big leap, as I've always rocked hair long enough to look like Bruce Lee. I didn't really know what to do, so my barber Thinley was patient and kind enough to walk me through the process and what looks good with my hair thinness and face shape. He ran through his Instagram and showcased some of his previous works and his opinions of what would look best and to accommodate my lifestyle of not using hair products. He had a difference of opinion of me not using products and I really appreciate it that he could give me an honest feedback. Booked an appointment here a while back and still feeling burned. Weather & delays in trains made it difficult for me to get to my appointment, and was trying to communicate with the shop well in advance to coordinate. No empathy nor understanding from the shop. Not even to move it back a couple minutes or reschedule to an open slot. I guess they don't take walk ins and couldn't fill the spot? I heard about 12 Pell from my brother as we were conversing about my plans to get a haircut in Brooklyn. After reading the their reviews over a couple of hours, I immediately went to the site to book an appointment. I didn't have the option to choose my barber while making the appointment - don't worry, you'll be able to receive the option. (The first thing I saw on the site was related the day and time I'd like to have my hair cut, but going to the site after I had already booked my appointment, it asks which barber I'd like to select and what their availability looked like). Nonetheless, I was immediately greeted by Julius and offered water upon my arrival at 12 Pell. A single video contained my favorite haircut, which hadn't duplicated and I have no recollection of who had cut my hair that time. As the video is playing, Julius called out what he sees in the video: disconnected Undercut... fade up to a 0.5... and a tapered line. He asked me a few questions - i.e. do you want me to cut it just as is in the video? As well as giving me suggestions - i.e. if you want, we can start at a 1 on the fade and taper it. When we got to that part in the haircut, he stopped and asked if I like the "1", or if I wanted it shorter to the "0.5", to which I agreed to the latter. Regarding every major issue of the haircut - cutting some hair to lighten it and create texture, showing me how to style my hair, as well as asking how I wanted my sideburns - Julius walked me through every step he'd take, provided the reasoning behind his suggestions/methods, and made sure I'd be satisfied by the result. The amount of communication between us, and the quality of what was said, made it feel like he truly wanted to make it to fit my face, rather than just following a template of a disconnected undercut that one might have in their head. I haven't styled my hair in a long time; I actually couldn't remember how long it was since I had my haircut. I love this place I've been to many barbershops and salons before, but not one of them has matched the quality and care 12 Pell provides. The staff are attentive and careful, they try to make sure you get an outcome to your liking. As I was getting my haircut, I liked to my left and saw a man getting the nicest cut I've ever laid my eyes upon. The shop has a nice ambience to it as well. The process is calming and chill. The one reason why this isn't a five star review is because it's extremely hard to book an appointment with one of their best barbers, and you'll probably have to settle for their though still great, lesser in terms of of skill staff. read more

I came across these guys on tiktok and scrolled through less than 10 videos before I was determined to get a consultation on my next trip to NYC. For someone who was used to the discounted chains (hey you get what you pay for), I was excited to see what options I had besides what is stored in a computer from a previous cut. While the available appointments (for consultations, standard walk-ins are available) were all 3+ weeks out, it was well worth the wait. I met with Peter, but my experience from the second I walked in the door set the tone for the rest of my visit. I think Tim was working the first chair and welcomed me, then offered me some water shortly before another gentlemen checked me in and took my jacket - they even offered a fresh new mask. Peter covered anything I could ask for, and more and all in a smooth, easily digestible pace (there is a lot of great info)! From the shape and contours of my head, density, type of hair, water absorption level down to my desired style (if any) and maintenance routine. We went over the tips to ensure an even look/style and working within the realms of what was possible with my particular head of hair. Great friendly conversation and thorough process from beginning to end. I was given several options as to how I can style my hair and while he used their preferred styling products, never once did I feel pressured or 'sold' on buying them (I did anyway because hey the magic worked). Peter mentioned he would send me a full recap of our consultation by the evening when he was done with his day, and like clockwork, a full breakdown of everything we talked about was sitting in my inbox. I've been to a lot of barbershops over the years, even learned how to cut hair myself, and I've always struggled to find a barber that has the ability to do both great clipper work and great shear work. Asian hair is notoriously difficult to work with and most barbers struggle in some area of it. I've gotten a ton of bad cuts over the years because barbers, including ones that work primarily with Asian hair, can't deal with my thick straight hair texture and always end up giving me bowl cuts and doing a poor job on the sides because of inconsistent hair density. I know my hair isn't easy to work with but it does suck to go to barbershops with some level of fear despite them claiming a lot of experience and charging well over 40$. The consultation you get at 12Pell is well worth the money. While it is more expensive than most places, it's much better to have a good path forward and to have a good haircut than to get a bad haircut and have to hide it for weeks. I've had an appointment with Tim about two months ago for a consultation and a haircut. I could tell immediately that he was very knowledgeable. He carefully inspected my hair before doing anything, noting things about my hair density, my hair texture, and my face shape. Things like knowing that the top of my hair shouldn't be less than 3 inches or it'll stick up, that my hair is receptive to certain fades because of the density of the sides, and which haircuts would be suit my face shape was an experience I've never had before. I've been to a lot of famous shops, including Filthy Rich and a plethora of Asian specialty ones like MG Artistic and none of them were this meticulous or knowledgeable. Since my appointment, I've been on a hair growth journey as suggested by Tim for a two block with a wave perm and am finally excited to change up my style. What an amazing experience and haircut. Tim is the MAN! I had just landed in NYC for a movie premiere. My hair had been sort of butchered down in Atlanta cause I live in a predominantly black neighborhood and to be fair they don't get to practice on straight Asian hair and my hair is really thick and straight. So I was relieved when I walked into 12 Pell. Tim was kind enough to squeeze me into his tight schedule. My good friend who is also in the film business swore by Tim's skills and he was not lying. Tim took the time to explain what went wrong with my previous haircut and game planned a recovery strategy which was also difficult since I had a movie premiere the next day. The salon was clean, everyone had masks and they checked temperatures. I felt super safe. The good: Great atmosphere - its clean, bright and trendy feeling, without feeling pretentious or like you are being judged. They do consultations, which I think are great. They really listen to you and can give solid recommendations for a cut and style that not only looks good in the salon, but that you can upkeep on your own. They also do email follow ups with the recommendations post consultation, which is a great touch. Also, while they have products for sale, they don't pressure you to buy them. The ok: I do get the feeling they might be slightly one-note, in terms of it seems they specialize in fades, so a lot of the clientele seem to get the same variation of the same cut - but damn, it looks good. I initially decided to come to this barbershop in April 2021 after seeing their quality work on Instagram & TikTok (@12pell). During my first appointment/consultation, Tim told me some shocking information (that I desperately needed to hear)--my other barber had been improperly cutting my hair for years! I'm usually a very loyal guy, and when it comes to my local barber that I had been going to for the past 10 years or so, I wasn't' sure if going to Tim was gonna sway me away. Then he blew my mind. The level of professionalism, add the extra attention to detail was superb. Tim (@juniorsparadise) gave me one of the freshest cuts I had, and he completely redefined my hairline and aligned it accordingly to my head shape. Is it a little more than other barbers? Perhaps. But sometimes you can't put a price on everything especially if the service you receive is second to none. The results are obvious and it's not a secret that the boys at 12 Pell are great at what they do. I last minute scheduled an appointment with Tim for a regular haircut (30 mins) but it turns out I should have scheduled for a scissor cut (45 mins) for the style I wanted.
