It took me years to find a barber that I could trust to do a good job every time I saw him. Once I moved New York, I was so hesitant to try new barbers that I accepted the cost of going back to New Jersey every couple of weeks for a haircut. This year, however, I decided to try my luck--could there be a good barber in the largest city in America? Apparently there is, and his name is Sam at Fellow Barber. I went to Sam on accident, technically; I had made an appointment with a barber who, I was later told, was at a different location on my scheduled day. After asking the receptionist, whose name I regrettably did not get, who was a good choice, he recommended Sam. I get a fairly traditional haircut: scissors-and-comb all over, long on top and short on the sides, no fade or anything like that. In a world of electric trimmers and GreatClips, a barber who knows how to work the shears is an unfortunate rarity. I was pleased to find that Sam is one of those rare few. He acknowledged the multiple cowlicks in my hair, and clearly took his time. He didn't seem to make a single cut that was not considered, and even then went back twice to make sure that everything was even and squared away. The meditative experience was completed with a straight razor shave on the back of the neck--the only real way to finish a trip to the barber (short of a full face shave, another pandemic casualty). Until I have reason to change, I have made Sam my go-to barber for whenever I'm in the city. If you care at all about how your hair looks, I suggest that you do likewise--and tip well! read more

I usually go to Horatio St Fellow Barber but I received an email about a new NOMAD location. What I love about Fellow Barber (Besides having great barbers) is their app. I make an appointment on my cell, easy peasy! Finding free parking in the area for 90 minutes is always hit or miss, I was able to snag a spot on the street. Walking into the barber shop, I see there is a coffee bar!? Horatio st who?? I have my coffee and now I meet Justin. I tell him how the barbers at Horatio st cut my hair and he is now a man on a mission. Justin takes out the scissors and goes to town. The end result, he gave me a good cut. And in typical Fellow Barber fashion, he takes a warm, mentholated towel and covers my head. I feel totally refreshed and I love my haircut. I accompanied my friend for a walk-in appointment yesterday. My friend got a scissor cut (no clippers, except to clean up the edges of the hairline.) Sam (not the owner) did an amazing job cutting my friend's hair who has fine hair and several cowlicks at the bottom, back of his hairline making it difficult to cut to look even unless one does a fade into a buzz cut at the bottom. Sam knew how to cut his hair withw doing a fade-in buzz cut so that you didn't notice the cowlicks. Also, the sides of his fine hair which show every single strand of hair were evenly cut. Expensive hair salons, stunningly, haven't been able to do a decent job with these things! It's expensive for a barber cut since some salons are similarly priced and include a shampoo (scissor cuts cost more), but the quality was excellent and looked better than more expensive salons so that's more worthwhile than a free shampoo with a scalp massage. read more

I even saw some that recounted overt homophobia, which is going to be a strong no for me during Pride month. I was about to mail it in when I discovered a new Fellow Barber location that had pre-10am availability - and with a senior barber! I've been to other locations and had great experiences, but really want to take a rare moment to review the NoMad location and Raquel. Raquel immediately made me feel welcome at Fellow, and got excited when I asked her to do something a little different with my undercut. Everyone has had a bad haircut - it's not an uncommon occurrence. But I have never experienced such poor technical skills on my hair. The layering, simple scissor work, and overall ability to give a uniform haircut (without relying on clippers) seemed lacking. And it resulted in a haircut that looks flat, uneven, and simply bad. I think he knew he gave me a bad haircut- I could tell from his face. Bummed out about my experience and leaving this review as a cautionary tale.
