It was mad easy to make the appointment- you can pre pay or pay after service which I appreciate. My barber was Nick. I walked in 5 minutes early "I have 3:30 appointme-" "Will? " "yes." " you're with Nick, he'll be done in 5 minutes please have a seat." 5 minutes passed like 20. I was chopping off my brown locks of which so many previous barbers and Salonistas have objectified "your grandfather blessed you huh," complimenting me with confounding wide eyes. I needed like Jesus to resurrect. Hairs a good place to start I had thought, probably influenced subconsciously by those characters on TV or films who chop off their all comfortable mane as to do shock therapy in the mirror or maybe I just wanted attention. Then I was in the chair at 3:30. I sheepishly showed him a picture of the cut that would be my dice toss. "High and tight" I was going all in like they do in Poker or those other Casino games ( which I actually have never played and don't intend to because gambling seems insidious and addiction runs in the family. ) His eyes jolted, catching him stunned then helplessly letting out a little smile like "this little white boy is really going to go for it, fuck it might look good on him" Then back to business, absolutely making positive with me that I wanted exactly the cut this 8 Mile looking kid with the wife beater in the picture had. I nodded becoming a bobble head giving an affirmative green light, consenting to be whacked and mowed. "Top too" "What?" "Top shaven too" "Oh yes. Exactly like the picture!." Still bobble heading before I ran out of that little barber shop like the back door of your neighborhood dive when you see the catfish your lazy tech fueled dating attempts brought in, as he, like a gourmet chef squinting at a fascistic and novel food swap request, made absolutely explicit the terms of my request. Business is business. Then he gently wrapped paper around my neck and then draped the classic robe, needlessly protecting a no effort Sunday dress , as Nick got right to work without those phony pleasantries and small talk of which I've never felt spurred to engage in but ,polite as I am, nonetheless entertain because, like a work of art or a meal, all that goes in to the work will show, and if a barber should feel ignored or made invisible, then this feeling would reflect in my hair. Thank god then the next half hour was silent as he sculpted with blade and razor, as if Sweeney Todd was on Lexapro, his only concern was on applying his tried craft to the customer patronizing his workplace, occasionally stepping back like a sculptor to take in the progress of his recent markings or very gently turning my stoic cheek left or right as needed to access the angle of attack. This was a man whose put in his 10,000 hours on the job because for him this high and tight fade was executed with a swift , calm but unflinching focus, like a routine ground ball to first base, take your eye off the ball and you may make an amateurs error, Nick doesn't take his eye off the ball and it seemed like the other barbers in there worked with just as much commitment and talent, providing excellent and tailored service to whoever should be their trustees . "Okay.. good?" Nick asked me after cleaning with a brush the loose little hairs around my scalp And then I just couldn't believe the mirror. I was Dorian Gray realizing the picture was of him. And I felt something unusual.. a latent puberty perhaps? For in that moment all the depictions of brutal masculinity we get assaulted with in the media suddenly made sense, not in the mind, but lower....in the soul I think. I left Elegant all the 30$ poorer (save for an undisclosed generous cash tip) , with a limitless swagger, feeling the all too late eastern winters 11'O Clock wind bitterly brush through my newly unclad scalp, gently teasing of what's to be a marvelous spring bloom. No, AI did not write this. No, I am no poet or author. I am a young man who's now just- a man. The simple ecstasy of my day. Gambling on a new barber while simultaneously impulsively intending on a suicide bomb of the hair-do, with merely a prayer that it may change things for the better. The staff is friendly and they seem to put a lot of time and attention into your hair, but I wasn't satisfied when I left. My bangs were cut unevenly, adopting the shape of a widow's peak, and there was little to no length for me to properly style my hair. I've been a loyal customer for quite a few months now and I'll say, for the most part, the staff does a decent job. It's not the best haircut I've ever received, but the prices are fair. Unfortunately, I had a really unpleasant experience with my last haircut. My bangs were chopped way more than I expected. They weren't even. My hair looked pretty bad, to be completely honest, after I rinsed and blowdried my hair. It took me a while to grow out my bangs and I was hoping to style it, but the person in charge trimmed off way too much. I feel like I'm back to ground zero in 1) having to grow it out and 2) making sure the length of my hair is even throughout since my hair was cut so unevenly. I have so many variations of lengths going on with my hair and it looks terrible. I normally receive compliments after getting haircuts from this place, but this was one of the first times where none of my friends, peers, or family members said anything positive at all. Honestly, the only high-quality stop for my haircuts. I used to live in the neighborhood from 2015 to 2018 and was a regular here. I no longer reside in New York, but anytime I visit NYC, I make sure to get a fresh cut from here because I always leave satisfied with the way I look. In particular, Ray and Max are long-time barbers of this location. Both are excellent in their keen attention to detail. They are my go-to stylists. They have reasonable prices for a cut, and all staff members there are respectful, friendly, and great in their craft. I love getting faded At Elegant Barber Shop. There are so many barbers to chooses from in Brooklyn, and there are so many that are great. I used to go to a different barber until my friend recommended this place. I don't have that kind of hair that you can go weeks without cutting, you can just pat down and it looks great like you just got out of bed. I have that Asian hair that is always unintentionally spikey, peach fuzz, straight as a whistle, and often times needs fresh cuts to look even halfway presentable. Anyone can cut this kind of hair, but it takes a special breed to cut it, texturize it, and give it that "intentional disheveled" look. Cue Elegant Barber Shop. I initially started getting my cut with Serg (Surge? Serj?) who now cuts mainly at the branch in Manhattan. I also got some cuts with Max, the owner, who is only at the Brooklyn spot certain days. Mainly over the past few years I've gotten my cut with Becca. They're all off the charts excellent, their skin fades are 100% (emoji style), and the price is great even after the bump post-Covid. I've gotten a few cuts when my main people aren't there which have been good as well. If you're going to see Becca, try to go early, or you might have to wait a bit cause she's pop-u-lar. It's worth it though! I'm not gonna attach a photo of my haircut, although it might help someone decide to come here. The novel I'm typing might be enough? Who knows. They take credit card but there's a fee so best to bring cash if you can. No need to pay the banks more money than we have to, amirite? There is an ATM around the corner. The area is nice so you can grab a coffee/bagel at the corner if you're waiting a bit. I recently left New York, but I know where I'll be going back to the next time I come through! One of the issues I've had is finding a barber shop that specializes in trimming medium to long hair styles. Many barbers in the area are only accustomed to doing tape up/Caesar style cuts as the majority of the population in the residual neighborhood has the same style. I've been fortunate to locate Elegant Barber Shop as they are keen to styling hair in the medium to long hair style for a reasonable price. My hair is not thick, but it definitely has natural waves. Believe me when I tell you, stylist always cut my hair in correctly as they don't consider the natural wave and direction my hair goes in. I've been trying to style my hair and the cut always came up short making my hair seem shorter on one side of my head. The Stylists here truly listen to what you want and work with you to ensure what you're getting is what you envision. The shop is a bit tight, but that pales in comparison to the service and quality. The place is easy to find upon walking in I got seated very quickly... After going over exactly what I wanted they set me up with a guy I believe his name was Sam. Been coming to Elegant recently because it's closer to my house - Was one of the best choices I've made. My barber is Max and he is great. He is friendly as can be (along with the other barbers). Also he is like a surgeon with the razor able to listen and execute what hairstyle and length you want. The shop itself is cozy with 4 chairs and is super clean and modern. Staff are constantly sweeping the floors. Pricing is fair especially for the neighborhood. Max even offers you a drink at the end. There is an ATM in the shop. They also carry and use higher end Gatsby wax products (Japan). Fri and wkends are busiest. So are mon and tue. Wed and thur is less busy. read more

You won't find a better quality haircut than Elegant Barber. I've always left super satisfied and surprised by how many people compliments my cuts. I've been all over Manhattan and Brooklyn for the past five years, and this is *hands down* the BEST BARBER in NYC! Service: Max is super efficient but also really takes his time to understand what you want. The shop isn't pretentious at all and carries all the comfort of a neighborhood barber. Although I appreciate the free whiskey, I keep coming back because they put so much care and effort in styling my hair. Price: $20! I'd even pay a lot more for the time, quality, and service so no complaints here. The price is really unbeatable! Pro-tip: Come before 5pm and beat the after work rush. He asked me what kind of cut I wanted, I showed him some photos of celebrities with similarly thick hair who sported the looks I liked. Max gave this some thought and helped me pick a look that would work based on the size and shape of my head. He then went to work and MAN ALIVE - this dude knows his sh!t. He spent what felt like 45 minutes working on my hair and used three or four different sets of clippers and scissors throughout the process. He was meticulous and focused - like Luke Skywalker when he rescued Han Solo from the Sarlacc. Cool. Clean. No mistakes. In fact, as I was sitting there, another guy came in and sat down in the adjacent chair. He asked if this was my first time getting a cut here and when I said yes he was like "Dude, just wait. Max is a genius. You came to the right place." I walked out feeling like a million bucks and I can say with confidence that Max is now my hair guy. EDIT: Went back to the shop and Max cut my hair this time. Great job with the fade and I was much happier with the length on top. Will definitely be a regular customer! Heard great things about this place. I probably should have waited for Max, but already waited for 10 minutes so I got my hair cut by another barber. I was extremely impressed by the fade. I asked for a 0 to 1 fade on the sides and I will say that it was executed pretty perfectly. My barber spent the majority of the time on the fade. However, I was pretty disappointed with the execution and time spent on the top of my hair (probably 10% of the time). I asked for it to be fairly short but still longer in the middle so that I could gel my hair straight up and it would taper upwards from the sides to the center. At the end, my hair was shorter but still long enough to be slightly parted to the side. In addition, he used clippers on the top of my head which may be normal for some barbers but I am used to only scissors and thinning scissors being used. After I got home and tried to gel my hair straight up, one side was longer than the other. read more

Max is the owner of the shop and a really excellent barber. It is rare to have a barber that has both a good big picture understanding AND has good technical skills. You usually have to settle for one at the expense of the other. Not so with Max. I trust both his aesthetic tastes and his fading skills, to the point where I barely look in the mirror after I get a haircut with him. And I am really picky. A quick blurb about my hair. I have thick Asian hair, and my usual cut is a high and tight with a side part (not hard part). With my hair and this hair style, it is really easy to get a haircut with sharp edges where the sides meet the top. Or even worse, on the side with the part, some barbers will just go right up to the part with the clippers, so that it is less a side part and more Hitler Youth. Max has a free hand technique with clippers where he softens out the edges on both sides of the haircut. I've never seen anyone do this before, but it totally makes the haircut for me. The other barbers in the shop are very good with technical skills, but I will always wait it out for Max if he is working. Cultural factoid: there were many Koreans living in the Soviet Union at the turn of the 20th century, mostly in the far east. Then in the 1930s, the Soviet Union, fearing that the Koreans were loyal to the Japanese empire (hmm) and wanting to isolate them, deported them to Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Like many forced resettlements, it was really terrible and many people died on the journey and when they got there. So if you are wondering how Koreans ended up in Uzbekistan (like Max), there you go. read more

A nice barbershop tucked away on a street corner that you might just miss if you're in the area. Staff are nice and wall-ins are welcome! The interior of the shop is very well designed. The barber I had was very precise and was keen on details and was careful/considerate when he was about to cut a good amount of length off. It was a great cut and kept me looking sharp! I told him I wanted something different other than a undercut but I ended up getting the same haircut I usually did. If you know what kind of haircut you want, bring a picture! They'll gladly do it.
