A strip of the top of my head is cut to 1 inch while the rest of the top is 4 inches.
Christian H.

This is objectively the worst haircut I've received. I've attached a picture. Make of it what you will. My barber asked me if my hair parts to the right. I told him yes, but would appreciate if he could part my hair a bit to the center. This was meant as more guidance for how the hair falls on the face in order to inform the barber how to cut the hair so that it frames my face. Instead he interpreted this as the "anatomical part" and shifted the boundary between the "side" and "top" to be shifted higher... so stupid. Now there's a strip of hair on the top of my head that juts out - it doesn't belong to either the top or sides. Every profession boils down to communication. It's extremely disappointing that this barber took the liberty to do such a decision that goes against what clients usually want, without consulting with me to double check. This bit of hair is going to take 4 months minimum to grow to a length that somewhat makes sense with the rest of my hair. At the end of the day the client should leave looking good. Sometimes clients use words incorrectly, or say things that is prob not in the best interest of what ultimately looks good on them. They don't know better. The barber is the professional, they know better. Because of this, if the client says something that doesn't make sense, the barber should make sure they over communicate before cutting off a BIG CHUNK OF HAIR that quite literally ruins the entire hair cut....

My girlfriend booked me an appointment here and I was pretty excited about it. However a day and a half before the haircut I was canceled on. In which I had to ask for the rescheduling. I booked a skin fade haircut and a beard trim. There was no beard trimming done (which is fine had I been told before hand) and the haircut was completely rushed. Barely a skin fade and a mediocre shape up at best. Being a native New Yorker I usually get a 20 dollar cut at the Dominican shop and have NEVER been upset with it. Id suggest doing the same. Overpriced for a lack of effort is not the way to go after a pandemic. In regards to the owners response- I did select beard trim and it clearly stated so in both automated text messages I received from your shop. I have the screenshots. Also if you are trying to point out that I texted you my personal dissatisfaction as if I was wrong for doing so, that is the number you contacted me on so I replied to it. CLEARLY not the shop for me thank you for pointing that out as well as if it's a shop for anybody other than bushwickians and hipsters! Lol. All the best to you!

My son and I have been customers of this barber shop for years, something I foolishly hoped it would count for something. But today they treated us like we're nothing but numbers. For the first time I missed an appointment I scheduled for my son and I called to reschedule it. The barber Katlyn and her manager were quick to tell me I will be charged FULL price for the missed appointment and that I would have to book a whole new appointment and pay full price for that one as well. So paying twice for the price of 1. So instead of $80 I paid $160, yes this is one of those expensive barbershops. I accepted my fault, but I called on their "good side" hoping I could at least get a discount for the second appointment, given the fact that we have been there so many times and this was a 1-time honest mistake. They quickly refused to give me a break and then lectured me how cancellation policies work at clinics to as an attempt to prove their argument (yes, they compared their barbershop with a clinic). They had no empathy and didn't consider that we are two of their long time customers. At this point of the conversation I realize how cold and stiff they are, they didn't bulge an inch. I am a public school teacher and work in the neighborhood, I believe that the value of community works best when there is room for compassion and we listen and care about each other. To barber Katlyn: I had the wrong impression about you. Such an ugly way to end a nice thing just to accommodate your greed. Today you took $80 from me as a penalty but lost 2 loyal customers for good. Such an unwise way of doing business. I hope you learn something along the way and treat your future customers better. In response to the owner's comment and private tex: I treated you with respect on the phone but you still called me a bully, do you consider me a bully for trying to negotiate with you about the harsh no-show penalty ? Also, if you truly value your business, don't you believe in finding a middle ground with your customers? You quickly refused to negotiate both times I called you, although I didn't like it, I accepted your decision and payed everything you asked for. However when is your turn to accept my HONEST review of your customer service which is the truth of what happened, you called me a bully and harass me sending me unprofessional private messages to my cellphone # ? So who is bullying who sir?

Uneven beard line and cuts

Sadly, while this place was clean and welcoming, my experience ended in battle wounds. My barber was very nice and we had great conversation. She really listened to my needs, talk just the right amount, and seemed competent. I got a haircut and beard trim, for $50 + tip. See the pictures to see what I got home with. While I did love my haircut, my beard trim was uneven and I was bleeding in many places, with deep cuts on all sides of my neck. One tiny cut I could understand, but this was MANY. And they were painful. And the were very easy to see. Needless to say, I am highly unsatisfied and feel like I paid $50 to get my neck chopped up.

Not thrilled. And it's a shame because this place is mad close to my apartment. I called about getting a shape up and cleaned up around my edges. I was only to be met with attitude that they "don't normally do just shape ups". What? You're a barber shop. I don't want a fade or anything. If I could see the shit myself, I would do it. I've never had an issue like this and I was kinda skeptical about the weird tone in the person's voice. They said they could do it for me (huh, okay?) and to come in at 7 p.m. Okay... Long story short...haircut is soooo uneven. I brought this up to the barber and she had several excuses why it looked like that. Umm...it looks like that because you buzzed too much off. Hey, everyone knows you can't argue with a barber. Fuck it, I'm upset. One is curved and the other is bone straight. With the shitty service on the phone and the terrible cut, it's safe to say I won't return. Can't wait for this shit to grow out...and, remember, always stick with your general barber.

Head barber Danny Baptista
matt l.

Local barbershop Stepping Razor is a hallmark of the neighborhood. Head barber and owner, Danny Baptista, has been in the location for over 9 years and you can tell. He's shop has a nice feel to it with great classic decorations. Baptistsa is an old hand at the shears and did a great job on my fade. I felt comfortable in his hands and he didn't take too long - I hate sitting in the chair for hours and hours. He doesn't force the conversation but is obviously genuinely interested in the people that sit in his chair. The shop holds 4-5 chairs and you should book ahead of time. Prices are reasonably set for contemporary barbershops. This is a great spot to stop into and an even better spot for those in the neighborhood long term.

After seeing some good and consistent reviews online, I decided to book an appointment and get my haircut. I scheduled a 2:30 with Mark, and wasn't seen until 3pm. It was a short wait, no big deal, but in general people book appointments for a reason. Moving forward, I'd recommend the shop to try to honor appointments within a 15 minute time frame of the time it was booked, otherwise why book an appointment in the first place? Regardless I got a simple trim, short on the sides and a little length off the top. The next day, a friend of mine mentioned to me that the back of my head wasn't finished and that there was a good amount of hair by my ear that also needed to get shaved. To charge $35 for a haircut and to not be able to deliver very simple stuff, like removing the excess hair off someone's back or behind someone's ear is completely inexcusable. It's either out of lazy or incompetence, or both. Either way, I'll never go back here.

" you're with Nick, he'll be done in 5 minutes please have a seat." 5 minutes passed like 20. I was chopping off my brown locks of which so many previous barbers and Salonistas have objectified "your grandfather blessed you huh," complimenting me with confounding wide eyes. I needed like Jesus to resurrect. Hairs a good place to start I had thought, probably influenced subconsciously by those characters on TV or films who chop off their all comfortable mane as to do shock therapy in the mirror or maybe I just wanted attention. Then I was in the chair at 3:30. I sheepishly showed him a picture of the cut that would be my dice toss. "High and tight" I was going all in like they do in Poker or those other Casino games ( which I actually have never played and don't intend to because gambling seems insidious and addiction runs in the family. ) His eyes jolted, catching him stunned then helplessly letting out a little smile like "this little white boy is really going to go for it, fuck it might look good on him" Then back to business, absolutely making positive with me that I wanted exactly the cut this 8 Mile looking kid with the wife beater in the picture had. I nodded becoming a bobble head giving an affirmative green light, consenting to be whacked and mowed. "Top too" "What?" "Top shaven too" "Oh yes. Exactly like the picture!." Still bobble heading before I ran out of that little barber shop like the back door of your neighborhood dive when you see the catfish your lazy tech fueled dating attempts brought in, as he, like a gourmet chef squinting at a fascistic and novel food swap request, made absolutely explicit the terms of my request. Business is business. Then he gently wrapped paper around my neck and then draped the classic robe, needlessly protecting a no effort Sunday dress , as Nick got right to work without those phony pleasantries and small talk of which I've never felt spurred to engage in but ,polite as I am, nonetheless entertain because, like a work of art or a meal, all that goes in to the work will show, and if a barber should feel ignored or made invisible, then this feeling would reflect in my hair. Thank god then the next half hour was silent as he sculpted with blade and razor, as if Sweeney Todd was on Lexapro, his only concern was on applying his tried craft to the customer patronizing his workplace, occasionally stepping back like a sculptor to take in the progress of his recent markings or very gently turning my stoic cheek left or right as needed to access the angle of attack. This was a man whose put in his 10,000 hours on the job because for him this high and tight fade was executed with a swift , calm but unflinching focus, like a routine ground ball to first base, take your eye off the ball and you may make an amateurs error, Nick doesn't take his eye off the ball and it seemed like the other barbers in there worked with just as much commitment and talent, providing excellent and tailored service to whoever should be their trustees . "Okay.. good?" Nick asked me after cleaning with a brush the loose little hairs around my scalp And then I just couldn't believe the mirror. I was Dorian Gray realizing the picture was of him. And I felt something unusual.. a latent puberty perhaps? For in that moment all the depictions of brutal masculinity we get assaulted with in the media suddenly made sense, not in the mind, but lower....in the soul I think. I left Elegant all the 30$ poorer (save for an undisclosed generous cash tip) , with a limitless swagger, feeling the all too late eastern winters 11'O Clock wind bitterly brush through my newly unclad scalp, gently teasing of what's to be a marvelous spring bloom. No, AI did not write this. No, I am no poet or author. I am a young man who's now just- a man. The simple ecstasy of my day. Gambling on a new barber while simultaneously impulsively intending on a suicide bomb of the hair-do, with merely a prayer that it may change things for the better. Oh and alas then Miracles as the master blesses you, the giver of a swag until now had been in a virgins shrouds. 10/10. Would recommend to all grooming mortals.

Unfortunately, the past three visits have left me frustrated. I usually book with Yuriy, who is an excellent barber and has always given me great haircuts. The issue is that Yuriy has not shown up for my last three scheduled appointments made through their online booking system. That system allows you to choose a specific barber and time, but if the barber doesn't actually check or honor those appointments, it defeats the purpose. The first two times this happened, I got a haircut from the other 2 barbers in the shop; one the first time, the other the second time. The results were ok--not bad, but not at the same level as Yuriy's work. The third time, Yuriy again didn't show up, and one of the other 2 barbers called him. Yuriy was apologetic, and asked me to come back the following day at a specific time, which I did, but once again he didn't show, and after waiting around for 15 minutes, I left. I don't mind trying different barbers, but once I found a barber I like I prefer to stick to him. if I book a specific person and they repeatedly fail to honor appointments, it feels unprofessional and unreliable. At that point, there's no reason for me to keep booking here when I could just walk into another shop. It's unfortunate, because Yuriy is truly very good. But unless the booking system and reliability improve, I can't recommend this barbershop if you want a specific barber to cut your hair.
