Maybe it was just a bad day, but man, did I get a bad haircut here. Literally everything went wrong. Bad haircut, awkward conversation, just bad all the way around. It's barely 2 weeks later and my hair looks like a 6-year-old cut it. It's got no shape, no logic to it, I can't even figure out how to comb it. Now, I'll admit, I have difficult hair to cut. It's thick, it's curly, it's heavy, it doesn't like to stay in one place. But I also brought all this up when I first went in, and Danny just did not listen to me. At all. He didn't listen about how long I wanted it, how I usually comb it, what I put in it. Every time he asked a question, he'd either ignore my answer or argue the point with me. You know your barber isn't doing a very good job when, at the end of the cut, he says "Oh, your hair really is curly." . . . uh, yeah, I know. I told you that when I walked in. The worst part? He asks me what I put in my hair after it's cut (I use Murray's). He says "Ok, did you bring any of that with you?" I said no, I kind of figured that's what I went to the barber for. I even asked him, "what are all those cans of grease you've got in the display case for? Just for show?" I mean, jesus. Why would I bring pomade to a barber shop? Should I have brought scissors and a razor too? Admittedly, it's hard to find a good cut for $20. But this ain't it. read more

So, I scheduled an appointment today with Derek at 5:30 PM. But, instead I got Mike, BUT everything is all good. Mike asked me what I wanted to do, so I showed him a photo on my phone, and he first told me if I understand that my hair might not look exactly like the photo. I was totally fine with this. I was actually nervous since it's my first time at the shop, but Mike is a really cool ass guy. He isn't a barber that dosen't say anything to the customer, he actually talk to you, and makes you feel welcomed like hell. Overall, i'll be coming back here, and i'll surely be back with Mike. read more

Stepping Razor is the best barbershop I've ever been to, hands down. I've consistently gotten the best haircuts of my life here, and everyone I know that goes there swears by it. They really understand how to cut mens' hair, using techniques that you just rarely see at a unisex salon. The staff is super cool, the ambience is great.. just perfect all around. Not only that, the prices are insanely reasonable!! $25 for a cut?? Come on! read more

I've been coming to the Stepping Razor for years and have gotten cuts from Danny, Mike, and Derek. They have a perfect record in my book because I've never gotten a bad cut. Skilled cuts, reasonable prices, cool guys... just make an appointment- everyone knows how good they are and they can get really busy. read more

FANTASTIC haircuts for extremely reasonable prices. I've been going to Derek for over a year now and have never been disappointed in the haircut. I know it can be a little bit of a trek to get there and awkward location, but the haircut is definitely worth it. If you're looking for a permanent place to get your haircut, look no further. My only advice: make your appointment two weeks in advance! read more

I was originally going to get my hair cut at Tomcats but they didn't have any appointments left so I went on Yelp to see what else was around. I didn't know that this place existed so I called, made an appointment and rode over. I've had my hair cut twice now at The Stepping Razor, the first just scissors, the second a clipper-cut and both came out great. The pricing is super reasonable, especially when you look at the quality of work they're putting out. The barber I had really took his time and made sure everything was perfect before the cut was done. It's a welcomed and sorely-needed addition to Bushwick. A+ read more

I love this place. It's exactly the kind of vibes I want in a barber shop. Good prices with quality that rivals any of the more expensive haircuts that I've had in my life. Yes, I've had the girl that everybody is complaining about on here. Yes, it was pretty bad. But she is no longer there. Give them another shot. Danny is the man. read more

My favorite place to get a haircut. Very reasonable prices and great people. I have been going there for the past year and usually go to Keith. I'm writing this review because I got in a little early but didn't have cash so i went out to meander to go get some. Except I meandered way too far and got a call from Keith gently reminding me that I was late to my appt.. by 15 minutes. I booked it hard to get back and he still let me get an awesome haircut while handing me paper towels to wipe the sweat off my face. He's so laid back that even when he's in a hurry, hes always down for a pleasant conversation. Even though the visit was truncated so he wouldn't screw up his busy schedule (they're always jammed), I still feel like it's one of the best haircuts ive gotten. You go Keith. read more

This place is awesome. It's a cool spot without being pretentious, which, as you would expect, is not easy to find in NYC these days. Plus, it's not expensive. Mark, my barber, was great. He was attentive, took his time, made me feel comfortable, and obviously takes a lot of pride in his work. The haircut lasted almost an hour, which, for the price, is incredible. Plus, he really worked with me to figure out what I wanted to get. I'm not in Bushwick, so it's not the easiest place for me to get to, but ya know what?? I don't think I that mind the commute. read more

Like many others, this is my new go-to barbershop after one first visit. I had an appointment with Mark at noon and arrived a couple of minutes after. Mark was behind the counter and though it was totally my fault for being a couple of minutes behind he was brisk but generous with getting us started. Unlike other barbers that I've been too, I felt a very honest dialogue with him. I'm on my final week of an off-Broadway play so I needed a cut that would still fit the show but also something that I wanted to sport at home for the holidays. I explained what I wanted, Mark gave his personal opinion on the best way to get it and after his succinct and simple explanation, I just let him do his job. Conversation was easy and genuine and I was still able to relax in silence at some points, which is always a favorite feeling during a haircut. Afterwards I felt like I'd made friends with a cool guy that happened to have a very solid skill set in his art. The other barbers were more than willing to answer any questions, so there was no Brooklyn kind of pretentious vibe, just a really cool aesthetic and down to earth customer service relationship. It's one of my favorite haircuts if not THE favorite cut I've gotten and compliments keep coming in left and right. I look forward to scheduling to see Mark again next month and will recommend this place to any of my friends in the future. read more

I'm lucky when it comes to hair, I have thick wavy hair that looks good in a variety of styles and lengths. Generally, I go to this place in my old hood Len's Barber Hairstyling in the East Village on 2nd ave and I will continue to go there because my boy has my hair looking PERFECT every time. But, I live in Bushwick, so occasionally I hit up the Stepping Razor. The place is obvious artsy-fartsy bait, draped in tattoo imagery and old skateboard decks the place obviously appeals to the sensibilities of this neighborhood's boho wanabbes. Both times I've had Gaby. She's a nice gal, we talked about tattoos and music and such. Lately I've been wearing my hair longish on the top, combed back to the side when it gets long and spiky when it's short. I then bring the sides down all the way down to a 1/2. I related this to Gaby. She immediately hacked off the sides but completely avoided the fade and didn't even trim the top. She didn't ask my preferences at all before just going for it. She hacked my sideburns off and with my dome piece as wide as it is the straight cut looks very stupid on me. It just looked uneven, my gf was bummed and I was bummed. I'll go back but as sweet as she is, I don't think I'll let Gaby touch my hair. And I will still go to Len's whenever I find time working in the city. In my experience, the barber shops that are going for the hip, artisinal vibe are pure marketing. Go to the tried and true places. read more

What is there not to like here guys? The skateboards on the wall? The 1950s pinups of iconic beauties? The hot lather shaves? Come over and spend a little guy time getting your trim from guys who know how guys like their hair cut. Keith always cuts mine right. read more

This place blows. If you have any kind of complicated hair, I don't think you'll find this hipster, gross joint a winner. The guys are cool. But it stops there. Danny can't cut hair. When the owner can't cut hair, you gotta find another joint. He takes calls and appointments from his cell phone. Occasionally he'll text while he cuts your hair. That's about all you need to know to go somewhere else. I think my old haircut was good, but I needed a cut fast and now, so I came in here. I wanted to try something new. I'm used to a Japanese stylist who is extremely detailed. Danny asked me what I wanted. I explained it. He had no clue what I meant, so we just jumped in chopping and snipping. One of his first comments is that whoever cut my hair before really messed up. It was quite the talking point for him. The cutting was brutish. Then came the razor. You know you're getting a bad cut when they have to take out the razor to straight up lawn mower your hair. I went home, took photos, looked in the mirror, and noticed a number of errors. Eventually I came back in and got them addressed. But a few days later, I noticed a mistake on the back of my head. I noticed that my sides were uneven. Altogether I was happy with the overall look, but the details spoke volumes. Danny was flexible with me coming in for a revision, so I guess that's kind of a plus. A few weeks later my hair grew in and I went back to old stylist. I explained the situation, and we continued the same style. He perfected it and I'm happy. I'll give Danny credit for getting the general idea of the cut. But I won't be coming back here, ever. read more

Abysmal, used to get my haircut by a guy there named Derrick, decent barber, kinda hit and miss, but overall pretty amazing for $25. Today I went in and got a haircut from the gal who took his spot. Not only did she forget which side of my head my part was on halfway through, she essentially gave me the same symmetrical haircut on both sides. It looks straight up bad, now I have two months of trying to fix it vehemently until something can be done by someone more skilled. read more

We all want the same thing: The old school New York barbershop full of guys with beards looking like they're from the late 1800's, dedicated to one thing and one thing only; making that mop on your head look as good as possible. The stepping razor is more so on the new school bad ass greaser side of the tracks. Can't remember his name but a big thank you to the skinny dude who's always in train conductor overalls and pompadour for making me look my best. read more

After reading reviews for this place I made an appointment for 7:00 pm on a weekday. I walk in and the place is empty, save for two barbers, Mike and Danny (I think). Mike's my guy. While some great tunes play in the background, Mike asks me what I want done. I tell him using vagueish terms. He then explains to me how he's going to cut my hair, where he'll start, and as he cuts, he tells me what he's doing and asks me questions as he goes. I ended up getting exactly what I wanted even though I walked in there not knowing how to explain it. Mike just knew. Also, when I went to pay I realized I was low on cash. Mike was totally cool about me running across the street to the ATM. I could've just left without paying. If you like getting a great haircut for a modest price, listening to good music, and being around chill people, go to the Stepping Razor Barber Shop. I know I'm going back. read more

Went back today. Got a real hair cut and some laughs. Good experience. Good cut. Quick. Easy. Thumbs up.

Hands down best barbershop. Danny is a super friendly guy and he's done a great job curating a 'gentleman's' atmosphere. Most importantly, he pays close attention to detail and doesn't settle if he isn't happy with his work. The Boston accent sealed the deal. read more

This lovely little spot is now going to be my official neighborhood barber. Had great experience over at The Stepping Razor. It was a 2 day wait for a chair, so factor that into your booking. Gaby cut my hair and bottom line, she cut it well. The place is clean and well decorated with old-school skateboard decks and vintage tattoo posters; all of which fit the barbers here perfectly. Danny, the owner, has been cutting hair for almost five years and at this location for a bit more than a year. There are three barbers at three chairs and four chairs for waiting. The vibe is airy, comfortable, and clean. OK, the CUT! I have unruly and wavy hair, but Gaby wasn't daunted. I told her I just wanted it cleaned up, the ducktail removed from behind my noggin', and brought in a half inch or so all the way around. She got to work, was personable and friendly, and most importantly, is good at her job. Within twenty minutes or so, I had a well executed hair cut. Not too much taken off, but sculpted into a classy and versatile look I'll be able to do a lot with. I was nervous from the pix they might be like, "Hipster 30s Style Fade Or Nothing". But not at all. Gaby didn't blink and gave me exactly what I asked for. The reviews have lots of prices quoted. Like the rents out here Bushwick way, they must be gradually upping their prices to see what the "market" will bear. I can see from the reviews they used to have $20 cuts. As of today, a cut is up to $30. Ultimately, I find that to be very reasonable for a Stepping Razor quality cut. I'll be back for sure. read more

I've been bouncing around barbershops a lot because asian hair is really difficult to work with and it's been kinda hit or miss. I used to come to stepping razor but switched to another barber last fall...but after he kinda messed it up last time i decided to come back. This was the first time I got my haircut by Derek, and he seriously did a phenomenal job. You can tell he's got a lot of experience. Derek has the finesse of a salon stylist but the precision of a barber. He understands the difficulty of cutting asian hair...the texture, the way it falls, etc. He would slowly shape and fade my sides to perfection to avoid taking off too much. Derek is super cool too! He really cares about his clients and wants to be 100% sure they leave the shop satisfied. He even offered to give my sides a free trim if they started growing out of shape. I'll definitely be coming back to see him again! read more

$20 for a cut $25 for a scissor... Great barber shop banter and the haircut was killer!

Danny is a quality barber and very reasonably priced. Good vibe and experience.

The barbers here are funny, friendly, and well-skilled. Mike has cut my hair consistently for the past year and is both efficient and meticulous. The price is about average for the area, but the place shines with the personalities at the shop, the great music being played, and the art of the walls. There is a good vibe here. As far as value, they would get one more star if they accepted credit cards given how much they charge. It's one thing to pay for an $18 haircut in cash and something else when you're $30+. read more

The best experience I have had since moving to this area. I recently moved here and have been trying to find the best spot for quite some time. i tried Tomcats, garbage. Poor service, poor quality cut, and just overall awful experience. I tried some Russian orthodox joint, it was super cheap but you basically sit down and they just do what they want with you. The moment I walked in to The Stepping Razor I knew I came to the right place. I was welcomed once I walked in, Danny and Derek were both friendly and accommodating. I showed up late because of train issues, but Derek had no qualms with fitting me in. He was enjoyable to talk to and really funny. He knew exactly what I wanted and I am totally satisfied. Great spot, great guys, great cut. Thank you Stepping Razor! read more

I have been remiss in not posting sooner. Derek has been cutting my hair for 2+ years now. The work is incredible, the quality unmatched, and the banter -- well that's just priceless. I'm picky. One of the best barber shops in brooklyn. I texted them to make an appointment and got response shortly after. Showed up and I was immediately impressed by the atmosphere. They have a great nostalgic feel. From the classic swing and jazz music to the vintage barber chairs. There wasn't much of a line so I was helped immediately. Keith was my barber and didn't just go at it like most other barbers. He carefully made sure he understood the style cut I wanted. After explaining the style he executed it perfectly and still sparked up friendly conversation. Altogether, the barbers, the atmosphere and most importantly my haircut was great. I will, most definitely, be going back. Great shop guys. read more
