It's disappointing for me to write a negative review, as I've been a loyal client of Benny's Barbershop and Salon since this barbershop first opened on Classon Avenue many years ago. Unfortunately, the past three visits have left me frustrated. I usually book with Yuriy, who is an excellent barber and has always given me great haircuts. The issue is that Yuriy has not shown up for my last three scheduled appointments made through their online booking system. That system allows you to choose a specific barber and time, but if the barber doesn't actually check or honor those appointments, it defeats the purpose. The first two times this happened, I got a haircut from the other 2 barbers in the shop; one the first time, the other the second time. The results were ok--not bad, but not at the same level as Yuriy's work. The third time, Yuriy again didn't show up, and one of the other 2 barbers called him. Yuriy was apologetic, and asked me to come back the following day at a specific time, which I did, but once again he didn't show, and after waiting around for 15 minutes, I left. I don't mind trying different barbers, but once I found a barber I like I prefer to stick to him. if I book a specific person and they repeatedly fail to honor appointments, it feels unprofessional and unreliable. At that point, there's no reason for me to keep booking here when I could just walk into another shop. It's unfortunate, because Yuriy is truly very good. But unless the booking system and reliability improve, I can't recommend this barbershop if you want a specific barber to cut your hair. read more

Came for a taper + beard line up.. original agreed price was 55. When i asked if he could trim my beard further, barber agreed with no issue. When it came time to pay... the price suddenly became 75 because apparently asking for touch ups is extra. Walked by, saw $15 for a "beard cut", and I just needed a hair clipper to shave my neck and chick, basic stuff, but then as soon as I sat on the chair the guy said it was $25. I mentioned that on the sign says $15 for a beard cut and that's all I wanted and he started insisting on shaving my hair too, since I'm bald. Even tho someone else was working on my beard, the same guy kept insisting and I said I was fine, then he made a comment like "are you Turkish?" because I didn't wanna shave my head (I'm a Latino guy btw LOL) and was asking questions about where I live and what barber shop I go to; overwhelming, uncomfortable and a bit racist. This is a review for my last appointment 08/01/2021 with Yuri. The previous two appointments Mike cut my hair and he deserves all 5 stars. So, make sure you book your appointment with MIKE and make sure he is the one to actually cut your hair once you are at the salon. Mike is honest, kind and listens to what you ask, so he cuts your hair the way you would like it to look. The appointment I am reviewing was on 08/01/2021 with Yuri, who charged double the amount featured on the website and cut my hair the way he wanted it to look, not the way I asked for: much shorter than I asked. I booked an appointment on the website with Mike and selected regular hair cut which is listed as $30, the one I always get. The price listed is the same as the previous appointments, $30. Even though I booked an appointment with Mike, I was redirected to Yuri, and was asked to wait, although Mike was available. While I was waiting someone walked in with no appointment and was directed to Mike, to my surprise. After waiting some time Yuri cut my hair. I said I didn't want it short but it was cut short anyway and I was told very rudely to let him work and that he knows what he was doing. After Yuri cut my hair, I was charged $59.35 instead of $30. When I asked why is that, Yuri said that this is a "style cut"; "this was a cut with scissors not with a machine"; "the last times were not style". When I got home I checked the prices on the website once again: I was charged for a "Home call visit" which is $59. I was charged double than what I booked. Regular haircut, $30. I was charged for service at home, while the haircut was in the salon! The haircut itself took approximately 15 - 20 minutes and was not a complicated one, all in all it required shortening. When I was asked to provide feedback for my experience ('how was your experience?")I left a comment selecting "unknown charge" as the problem. I got back an e mail saying: "Next time please come Monday when Yuri not going to be here". There will obviously not be a next time. read more

Just went in to get a haircut and I could not have left more disappointed. They will charge you more than what your appointment says (it was supposed to be $32, it came out $45 even though I tipped zero) and they did not listen to what I wanted, at all. When I was explaining, they interrupted me as if they were annoyed I was explaining what I wanted and cut my hair the shortest Ive ever had it even though I repeatedly stopped her telling her I wanted it left long and that she was cutting it too short. No matter who you try to book with on their website, it's always some random person when you show up. The shop owner doesn't care about creating reliable service and overcharges for poor craftsmanship and outcome. The barbers don't listen to your requests and lack confidence. I had to repeatedly ask my barber to fix my fade and not touch my hairline, but he buzzed my edges back so far that it looks like I'm balding. Steer clear of this place. I was walking by Benny's on Franklin today and saw a guy with curly hair in the seat, and it looked good. So I went in. Yuri was able to get me right in. He was great. He spent time explaining good hair care, took his time shaping my hair (long and curly), and was a very friendly conversation. By the time he was done, my hair looked the best it has in years, felt clean and healthy, and I walked out feeling like I knew how to care for my hair in NYC. Price was very fair and Yuri didn't hard sell products. I will definitely be going back. read more

I've always compared people who cut hair with people who run their own consignment/vintage shops. Its all about the eye of the person who owns and runs the business. Honestly, before you find that one person you rely on to cut your hair just the way you like it, you go through a whole bunch of trial and error at the mercy of the person holding the scissors. With that said, Benny's seems to be staffed with barbers who are able to hit a home run almost every time! They all appear to have a natural intuition in terms of what would look best for the client. I have seen the shaggiest of men walk through their doors and walk out looking FAR better than when they came in, regardless of age or how much hair they have on the top of their head! Reasonable prices and extremely skilled barbers. Don't hesitate, just do it! read more

I went to get a haircut from Yuiry about 6 months ago. I walked out very pleased, with a haircut that framed my face nicely, looked natural and the way I wanted. He gave me many pointers on how to care for my hair from the proper shampoo to use for my hair needs, a healthy way to shampoo my hair, how to give myself a blowout, and other products that help protect my hair from heat and give it shine and products I should avoid. I felt like I was going to a hair doctor, not just a barber. I took notes and followed his instructions on how to care for my hair. Now, months later, I have never loved my hair so much. I popped into to this salon asking if they do haircuts for kids --I was with my nine year old son. The welcome was too warm to resist. And I sat on a bench watching as Emmanuel's tresses came falling off. Having lived in the UK for ten years, I have become enamored if boys wearing their hair long and luxurious - and this must have shown on my face when one of the stylists, Eugene, smiled and warned the owner, 'stop-- she can't take any more!' That's when I was invited for a consultation - my hair was in a bad state: frayed and breaking. But I had become used to this over the years. Eugene turned me around and i can't believe how gorgeous my hair looks and feels after one sitting. I wish I took pictures-- I got my first professional color in probably three years with a high end French brand. I was also guided on the correct way of shampooing-- and consulted on conditioning, which both stylists insisted was more often than not, unnecessary if your hair is getting the right shampoos free of detergents (low pH), parabens and preservatives. After a blow out--where the owner had a close inspection of the color treatment and was very satisfied- I looked like Jackie O...no really, very chic shape. I look forward to Eugene keeping my hair in good condition with more regular trims and protein treatments to keep these follicles healthy. As a mother of two sons, and a full fledged career-- this was such a wonderful experience of being cared gift. And I'm definitely bringing my husband- who becomes putty in my hands after a good shampoo massage. Awful service. I had an appointment and he was 40 minutes late to get to me. Others who got there later were given haircuts before me. The haircut was also terrible. I repeatedly told him to give me shorter hair on the front of my face to frame it, he would say, "the master knows" but never did it anyway. Went to see Yuri here who moved from his old Hair & Color location. He's the only stylist that I've had that was very honest about how I should be taking care of my hair. He mentioned my hair type shouldn't use conditioner and demonstrated a technique on how best to shampoo which was very helpful. I ended up with a completely different cut than the original trim I came in for but for good reason. It's much healthier now, low maintenance because I never blow dry at home and should grow out well. Thanks Yuri! read more

My first visit. I walked right in on a Saturday around 5pm and had no wait (though they said they're normally busy Saturdays) and got a great cut from Nodira (hope I spelled that right!). She was very precise and did not rush, which I always appreciate. I decided to go a little shorter than originally planned and it was no problem. Took about 30 minutes total. The owner was friendly, and he even caught one thing about my hair's growth pattern and did a quick fix. VERY DISAPPOINTED! I came here before COVID but never posted my experience. When I went there, I was asking for a very simple haircut. The owner was cutting someone else hair so he didn't doubt to let an apprentice to cut my hair. After 10 minutes she kept going back and fourth with the owner, wondering how to fix the mess she made. After 20 minutes, the owner come forward and apologized for the mistake and tried to fix my hair but still leaving such a mess. Instead of giving me a discount he had the decency to say "come back next time and we will give 50% off". Like are you really still trying to get me to pay for the mess you made? And are you still trying to get me to come back? The worst experience I've ever had. I am to shy to confront him, so I paid and left and never came back. read more

Had a great experience at Benny's. I wasn't sure if they specialized in women's hair, but I'm really happy with how my haircut turned out. I easily booked an appointment with Yuri on Yelp (they were very responsive and I was able to set it up within 30 minutes). Arrived on time, and didn't have to wait. I liked that Yuri was not super chatty--I don't really like making conversation when I'm getting my hair cut. He was professional and thorough, and when we finished he gave me some styling tips. This place is a scam. I went here for a haircut last month and wasn't happy with the service but I thought I should give them a second chance (because I live next door and didn't want to go far) - big mistake. My first experience: the owner will shampoo your hair and talk to you into buying products. He will ask you what you want to do with your hair but he will not listen and do whatever he thinks is best. Ok cool. I get it, he wants to be creative, fine. Then when I wanted to pay, he tried hard to sell me a brush (a 50 cents brush for $10)... I didn't fall into his trap. Then he started convincing me to buy his products again, only this time at a discounted rate! I ran away. He said their machine wasn't working for the day so I had to go to the bank to get cash. Today I went back again, told them I don't want any shampoos or products. Just a simple haircut. The lady asked me how would like my hair done? I said: 1- number 3 on the sides 2- touch of trim on top 3- straight back. This is what I got instead: number 2 on the sides, lost 3/4 of my hair length on the top with a round back! Like why the fuck do you ask me then? Then I come to pay again with card, he says the machine is down for the day, pay cash. I had to go to the bank again to get cash. There is hardly any customers in here every time I pass by their shop. Now I know why. Avoid by all means. Walk a block or two, you won't regret it. read more
