The two stars are for bad business. I've come to this Bedford spot a few times in the past few years. I'm a loyalist to the St. John's street shop. Today I got a pedicure and manicure today with Shelley. She was great. I didn't want polish, so I asked her to buff my nails, instead. She did a great job with that. When I got the bill, it turns out that buff cost me an additional $10. Shelley never mentioned it to me. It was also not in the menu. I told the manager, and she shrugged me off. I paid my bill and didn't tip. I would have happily tipped Shelley, but charging me for something that you didn't name and that isn't laid out in the menu is not the way. read more

Honestly, they don't disappoint. Clean, peaceful and consistent. I get gel mani's and regular pedis. I call a few hours before I show up to make sure I can get an appointment. No complaints. They wear face shields and masks for the pedi, and there is a glass up for the mani. They have you sign a waiver and they take your temp upon arrival. They help you to pick a color. Since the pandemic, it's not nearly as packed or crowded as usual. They only take a few clients at a time. read more

The space with its wooden panels, plethora of candles and warm vibes is calming and earthy. The ladies here are detail oriented, nice and good at what they do. Facilities seem quite new and clean. Good selection of colors. Most recently had the spa pedi ($27) with the heel treatment add-on ($8)- totally worth it. The technician did a nice job accommodating my requests. She spent a good amount of time applying the heel treatment and scrubbing down my achy feet. She also gave my feet and legs a good (albeit short) scrub and massage. Did not feel rushed at all. i'm giving this review 1 star because the service was good and the business was clean, however the actual product i received for the piece i paid is incredibly underwhelming. initially i was going to go with 2 but i really don't like the shape of my nails (i kept asking for more pointed/sharp) and i wanted the white line of my nails covered and they are not. look at my nails peeling within 10 days of getting my manicure. AND I PUT A CLEAR COAT OVER THEM MYSELF within a week of getting them done to make them stay as fresh as possible. they started peeling after 6 days. why. i'm really disappointed. after tip, i paid close to $100 for this manicure and am so sad that it's peeling so badly. i've had manicures that lasted weeks when i was rock climbing and was surprised that those nails only got scratched but never peeled. i seldom get manicures because i'm so active that i feel like it's pointless, but i've taken a step back from my normal activities and thought i'd treat myself. i am sitting at my desk on my computer doing work and this is what they look like!! not coming back. read more

I moved to the area two years ago, and at the time was not big into routine manicure/pedicures. Then I discovered Element Beauty and was so satisfied with their services that even after moving out of the area a few months ago, I still make the trek from Astoria back into BedStuy to visit my favorite ladies. The business has always been very clean and efficiently run. Now with COVID, they have acrylic dividers between you and your nail artist, they scan your forehead for temperature, have sanitizer everywhere and you must use it upon entering. You will also sign a form prior to receiving any service. They used to serve fresh flavored water or tea, but longer do this, assuming due to COVID. It's also strongly recommended that you make an appointment since they are unable to service as many clients as before so the spots fill up the quickly. All employees wear masks, and some wear gloves and/or face shields. The women who work here are quiet, but some of the kindest ladies I've ever had the pleasure of meeting in this industry. They will offer service suggestions if asked. I know there are a handful of not so great reviews on here, but I've never had a single bad experience in the many times I've been to this establishment. I will say that the pricing does confuse me a bit. I wish their website had a service/price list available. I normally get a gel manicure and it's normally $40 or so. All in all, I obviously recommend this place to anyone in the area. I hope they stay in business because I would be very sad to see them go. read more

I really like this place. It's clean and you pay for what you get. I never walk away hating my nails. Maria comes in on Saturdays and she is so good. She's patient yet precise. The 4 stars comes from my most recent visit. I went on a Tuesday night with an hour left until closing and while the technician was starting to scrub my feet with the paddle, she cut me! At first I honestly thought that my feet were just dry and ashy (out here trying to start a fire) but then I get home and I have a pretty visible cut. She also cut a little too deep into the side of my toenails. The woman working on my fingernails was very attentive and precise. I still walked out with my nails looking amazing but I guess I could have done without the battle wound. The place is still my go to for nails. read more

I used to love this whole chain. I've been to three locations over the past 6 years because they are clean and do a good job. I have to say that is not the case anymore. I come here and typically spend $100 on my mani pedi. I expect to be treated with respect, not because I'm spending money but because I am a person. I stopped getting specialty pedicures because of their attitude and sloppy jobs over the past six months and started only getting the basics, but even the buff manicure I got the last time was pretty bad and I was shocked. Over the past few visits nail techs have done a sloppy job and rushed for the sake of rushing. Mind you, I usually come in midweek to avoid being rushed. I'm currently sitting here now and Carmen just cut a chunk out of my toe with the clippers and had the nerve to have an attitude when I pointed it out to her. She also had an attitude when I asked her for water. (Every other woman sitting here has water--its standard in their business model. Why is this an issue?) Not going to stress enough how disrespected this feels being a black woman and a patron for YEARS. I told her her energy was bad and she needed to stop touching me. No apology. No antiseptic. Just walked off and got the manager. Now someone else is rushing the remainder of her botched work. I was going to stay and get a mani after, but I'm just going to get myself dinner instead. I work hard for my money and even harder to maintain my self care. If helping other women take care of themselves makes you upset, get into a different industry or take a day off. This is the last time I will be coming here. Oh and this pedicure is now finished and I sat here for 15 minutes. 1) this place is waaaay over priced but it's down the block so I go despite knowing I fully hate every time I do -- this is the last time I do that 2) today I went in and got the "organic pada" pedicure - the shaping, cuticle wok and actual pedicure were subpar - a $70 pedicure should be immaculate!! 3) during my massage, my tech literally kept dozing off. I really like going to Element in St. John so I thought it would be the same experience. My pedicure experience was fine and I'm happy with it. But my manicure wasn't a pleasant. I usually do not get my cuticles cut because I always have a bad experience with nail techs cutting my cuticles and bleeding... and this last visit, four of my fingers were pretty much cut and bleeding and the rest feel very irritated from the aggressive cuticles pushing. For a standard nail salon this place is amazing. Cute decor, everyone who works here does a great job, and the hot wax foot dip during the pedicure takes it a step above. *IF YOU HAVE SNS DONT COME HERE* they will turn you down. When I first tried to come here I had SNS on my nails, they turned me down & said they don't remove it. I had to go to another nail salon and get the sns removed . I then came back and the staff seemed unfriendly and stiff. I have come here many times (always for a gel manicure) over the last few month but have never been able to form a clear opinion - until yesterday evening. I went in for a pedicure and gel manicure, and received the absolute worst manicure I've ever gotten. My nails look worse than when I came in. Cuticles partially cut. Nail polish covering 4/5 of the nail. Filed incredibly short. Streaky paint. Not worth $10 let alone $35. My nail artist was silent and careless. I won't be coming back. I gave 2 stars instead of 1 because it took me several visits to finally decide I'm not coming back. Also, the the salon is clean with a nice ambiance. I bought a Groupon for this location. I called to make an appointment and was given a time. After I said it was a groupon they refused to see me that night and told me to come in another day. I told them That i couldn't and why couldn't in come in that night. The voucher was expired by that Monday. I asked to speak with a manager and the girl wouldn't put one on the phone. I was told by the woman on the phone that I couldn't come in on a Friday night (I'd have to wait until Monday) and those details were in the voucher. I called them back after I looked at the voucher, and told them that wasn't true. They still refused to make an appointment. They also don't believe that once a Groupon expires that they have to honor the promotional value. This place is terrible. I've been the crown heights and park slope location and they're nice. This place isn't AWFUL. If you don't want to serve people who purchase Groupons, then don't advertise them and lie about what's on the voucher. Just awful customer service. read more

I usually try a place out a couple times to ensure a well balanced review. But this is my first time here and I'm compelled to share. Really pleased with the finished product (gel mani / regular pedi) but the customer service was subpar. First lady barely touched my cuticles; I was able to scrape cuticles up with my fingernail after the first time. She attempted to correct the shoddy job but she handled me as if it was a chore...w an attitude (and somehow found more cuticle to cut than the first time). After she carelessly buffed my first two nails and swept over the other three w said buffer (one swipe across), my nails still weren't smooth and I wanted to request another person. I didn't sign up for a $27 polish change. I wanted to pull the manager to the side so as to not embarrass the manicurist by complaining in front of the other guests / her fellow coworkers but, she took it upon herself, abruptly leaving the station to report to her manager. Manager comes over to explain that she "just couldn't cut anymore of my cuticles" to me and was basically offering a new manicurist as I started to request one. She didn't even attempt to examine my foot. Just felt like I was being treated as the problem, rather than her staff member. I didn't want overcut cuticles. Those hurt! But I did want properly groomed nails and feet. Ok whatever. So another lady gets to work. She pushed/cut cuticles for the third time on the same foot...and, finally, my toes looked like they'd been touched. She could speak clear English (the couple times she opened her mouth) but seemed to prefer nonverbal communication. I don't need to be walked through the manicure process but "switch" works better for me than waving your finger at me to suggest that I switch hands in the nail dryer. The salon is cute. Clean. There were 3-4 ppl being serviced when I arrived and there was no wait. But the ladies I encountered need to recognize that, in this place that is OVERLOADED with alternative options, excellent customer service is what will keep their business relevant. read more

Came here with a girlfriend for a "girls-catchup" date and both walked about thrilled with the service we received and how our nails looked. We made an appointment on the same day and showed up NO WAIT, they took us right away. The ladies that attended us were precise, light handed and listened to us when we expressed concerns either about existent nail issues or our preferences for service. They were nice and quick too which was nice since most quick services look like exactly that! RUSHED SERVICE. The price was a bit high in comparison to other nail shops but totally worth it for the environment and service received. I've only been here twice and both times I've had great technicians, who know how to properly remove cuticles and do oval shape. The complimentary fruit infused water & herbal tea is a nice touch! I also like that they have fans built into the manicure stations - your toe nail polish is guaranteed to be dry by the time you finish your manicure. And of course I love the mini back massage at the end of every service. It's the little things! This place is a little pricy (for mani & pedi) compared to other local spots but it's worth it. I have been here several times in the past few months . They are not friendly at all. . With the exception of one or two.. I find it to be a prejudice place. The caucasian clients are treated nice. Blacks receive basic treatment. Another black lady at my job said she stopped coming as well because of the same thing. If they crowded forget it. They use to offer tea and water . They stopped due to pandemic but they drink it off to side themselves and only offer water if you ask. . It's not worth the extra bucks and I don't mind paying but not to be treated like I am bothering you when I am patronizing your business. But as long as they have the white clients they could care less. They need to smile and treat everyone with respect and know how to talk to people . I have said hello to several of them and they will look right at you and not speak Not even hello . The manager in the front is no better. She can be rude as well. . I was clearly there one day before the white lady standing to ask a question and she overlooked me and asked the Caucasian lady may I help you. NEXT INCIDENT, . I had one tell me I'm late one day but I waited when they are late twice. Mind you I was one minute late once. You think they apologize absolutely not. Again they cater to the white clients . Very unprofessional! I spent over 80 dallors and tip well. I even asked one of the girls to see a different color she got an attitude. She didn't want to waste polish. But I saw a white client come in try on the nail polish nothing said . But I simply asked to see two colors cuz I was not sure . Today I came in to get a pedicure and was thinking about a manicure but decided not to since the lady doing my nails and the front desk lady had a nasty energy as if I wasn't wanted there! I walked in hoping to make this my new neighborhood nail spot, but I'm not too sure if I'll return. I received the laziest pedicure I've ever had and I get them fairly regularly. The tech rushed through everything and I'm pretty sure my three year old niece could scrub my foot a little harder than she did. I didn't get my toes polished, so I was able to clean up my cuticles and properly scrub my feet with a pumice stone when I got home. $28 + tip down the drain. Love this spot. This nail salon has an extremely upscale feel with decent prices, however the quality of the service and products are entirely worth it. Best gel manicure I've had anywhere! The gel manicure here can last me 3 weeks+ no chips, no cracking.
