It's been a really bad grocery store for years but they are now freezing fruit, and their meat (when they have chicken it's a surprise) seems to have been through a freeze thaw endurance test. Tried another home delivery, put order in early in the AM to be delivered in the afternoon. This was on Friday, first day of the new sales. Worse than usual many front page sale major items were " OUT OF STOCK". I almost cancelled the order but after entering all my items and going through the arduous task of selecting alternates " in case they are out of an item" , which is more time consuming than you would think. As a longtime Barrington resident, I am aware of how challenging traffic is on 114 and often will avoid going into Barrington Center at certain times of day. This phenomenon undoubtedly influenced my sparse use of this Shaw's location, but for a long time I also felt that the store was poorly organized, and so I only visited on the rare occasion. However, since their recent renovations I have been more impressed. Customer service has improved, and the selection of products has also improved. There are two or three items that Stop&Shop stopped carrying, and which I buy exclusively at Shaw's. However, I also now get some produce there as well, as the quality of that has improved as well. While the Shaw's is not at the level of a Dave's or Whole Foods, I now visit semi-regularly which I would not have expected a year ago. read more

I come to Barrington Shaw's a lot, sometimes as much as once a day. I really like it ever since they remodeled. They rearranged a good portion of the store and it makes it easier to navigate and it feels like the layout allows for more product space. I like the selection they have, almost always find what I was looking for. They put in self checkouts and the lines haven't been a problem any of the times I've been there since then. The employees are generally nice. One guy in particular is really helpful and nice, I don't remember his name but he dressed up as the scarecrow from The Wizard of Oz one year for Halloween. I never see the employees hanging around doing nothing. The only problem I have is that there are never any of the mini carts available, so you almost always have to bring one in with you from the parking lot. All in all I enjoy my experience here, keep up the good work. read more

A place for food It's a Shaw's supermarket, just like a lot of other Shaw's. Good selection, pretty good prices and reasonably clean. However this one is special. Why?? Because it's about half way thorough the East Bay Bike Path and easily seen right from the path. Why is this important? Because it's a great place to stop for something to drink or eat while you are biking. I have stopped here many times and have found all types of fruits, veggies and even sushi or great bakery items to pig out on. They have a little benches out in front to sit while you eat. However, what really makes makes this a great place to stop is that they have bathrooms. Clean crappers with soap, towels and plenty of hot water. So if you are every on the East Bay Bike Path look for this Shaw's. It's a great place for a little break. read more

I absolutely HATE that this is the nearest grocery store to me. The second nearest grocery store is also a Shaws. I want to give them the benefit of the doubt, especially since I am forced to shop there for last minute ingredients. But... The "fresh" section of the grocery store is so sad, the butcher is laughable (Barrington Butchery or even Whole Foods are leagues better) and the checkout situation is infuriating. I try to plan ahead with Whole Foods delivery and go to Tom's in Warren when I forget. The worst part is that it's not even more expensive to do Whole Foods since Shaw's prices in that it's in Barrington. I hope they go out of business... literally any other grocery chain would be better (Market Basket? Whole Foods? Wegman's? Price Chopper? Heck even Stop and Shop!). Please shop elsewhere so this can hopefully happen one day. read more

Surly customer service and second-rate meats and produce. There are no other choices in Barrington, unfortunately, so we find ourselves shopping here more than we like. I lost count of how much produce we've bought here and it was rotten within a day or the melons for example never properly ripened or just tasted plain weird. It is like they source this off some guy from the back of a truck. Also we prefer organic food and their selection is less than brilliant - their house brand "Organics" is third-rate. The meat is also along the same lines - I bought some strip steaks the other day and it was tasteless. Likewise, their sirloin tips are gristly and inedible. Blech. To top it off, this Shaw's ain't cheap. It feels like they mark up their food to reflect the affluence of the neighborhood. I really wish it would close down already and they would open a Whole Foods, as the prices wouldn't be much different and the quality five times better. Avoid this place if you can. read more

Horrendous management and service. I tried to place an order for a rib roast for Christmas dinner a week in advance, something I've done for the last 10 years, and was told they are no longer taking orders. I tried to get a rain check and was told they don't offer rain checks for that particular item. I spoke with an assistant manager who told me basically that it was too bad, they won't offer a rain check, even though they didn't have enough for pick up on December 24. I've always had an love, hate relationship with this Shaws, as it is the only grocery store in the greater Barrington region. The prices are usually a little pricier than their farther away cousins, but it is very well stocked and clean. However, with so many recent updates, company policy changes, this place is now a burden to shop at. First, the previous self-checkout lanes are now gone, which I really liked for efficiency sake. Second, they replaced the plastic shopping bags with flimsy paper bags a while ago, as an effort to save the environment, but now they've also started charging for paper bags, 10 cents a piece, which, in my mind is absolutely ridiculous for something that is of standard of care in every grocery store across the country. This place is a dump. Staff are rude and not at all helpful. A lot of items are overpriced. The place could be cleaner, too. The deli is an extra-special disaster. People working behind the deli counter are slow, lazy, and surly. They also refuse to use the numbered ticket system, which makes it just that much more fun. Fresh meats are lousy. Selection is poor. And anything they make in-house sucks. Stale tortilla chips, brown guacamole, old dead roasted chickens that would turn you to vegetarianism. Please, please fold up and go away. Who hoo! As of June First, they are charging us for bags. As per the local ordinance, they are not allowed to provide is with plastic bags. They are banned in Barrington. But they'll sell you as many as you need for ten cents each! Shaws has gone downhill the past several years. It can be explained rather easily by looking at the price tags. They think we are all made of money. Their signature deli Dietson & Watson is $9 to $11 a pound. The same products are $6 to $7 a pound at BJs. A ribeye steak could be $17 or more and the wholesale clubs might be half that. Same thing for hamburger, eggs, butter... The stuff doesn't sell. It sits there until it goes bad. The $2 and $3 off stickers come out and the stuff sells. You get grey beef, sausage, hamburger and smelly chicken.... But you saved $3! Fish too. They start off selling cod fish for $11 a pound and lower it $1 after a couple days. I return fish all the time. How many Friday nights I've brought home frozen shrimp because the fish looked bad. I buy a lot of rotisserie chickens and they are $8 at Shaws. At BJs and SAMs they are $5, and they are bigger Perdue chickens. The fish has got another thing going on too. Nothing is "fresh" no matter what the tag says. Previously frozen and thawed fish will be mushy and the color will fade. The fresh fish has been soaked in something. It is shiny, unnaturally white, waxy and firm. It also has a faint smell of ammonia, which is what fish gives off as it spoils. I've caught and filleted hundreds of pounds of fish, including cod and haddock and fresh, unmolested fish just doesn't look, smell, or feel like theirs does. In the last year, I returned lobsters, fish, hot dogs and chicken. I see grey meat and old fish in the cases that I would never buy. They say it's perfectly good. I think it's an insult to slap a $3 coupon on a $17 steak that's turning grey. I can buy that steak for $8 at SAMs or BJs. The same happens with produce. You see the guys out there cutting the wilted leaves off the cabbages, lettuce, celery... It's damage control. You pay for half a bundle of lettuce because they've trimmed it over and over to keep it on the shelf. They don't turn over their produce fast enough. They toss a lot of it and then, they have to raise their prices to stay in business. Check your packages carefully folks. There is always talk of the big supermarkets going out of business. Almacs, Purity Supreme, Heartland, RoJacks... All had markets around here. Now, there are the big box clubs and boutique markets like Toms, Daves, Whole Foods and discount markets like Price Rite and Aldo. If I had to break it down, I probably shop at; SAMs Club 40 percent BJs 20 percent Price Rite 10 percent Seabra 10 percent Shaws 10 percent Stop&Shop 10 percent Ten years ago, it would have been 50 percent Shaws & 50 percent Stop & Shop. Poor selection, high prices, chatty staff. They charge $4.29 for the milk that I can get at Shaw's in Riverside for $3.69 or at Stop&Shop for $3.29. That is blatant up-charging simply because of location. Not cool. The younger cashiers are all very chatty and rarely pay attention to your transaction while ringing you out. Several times, something has rung up incorrectly and I've had to interrupt their conversation to bring it to their attention. There is also an older gentlemen, Jorge, who is obstinate and unaccommodating when it comes to split tender transactions. He actually told me, "no, you can't do that" when I asked if I could pay part cash, part credit. That is a downright lie. When I explained to him how to accept a split tender (I did work retail all through high school and college and it's not rocket science). He just ignored me and said, "no. no. no." So rude! So now anytime he is working, I just avoid his line. read more

Over the last 2.5 years I have visited this Shaw's many times. I seem to always leave feeling a bit upset about the experience. Usually the experience isn't bad enough to post about, but I guess today put me over the edge. I had just gotten done with a conference call at 12:50 today and had another call at 1:30. I figured that I had plenty of time to run down to Shaw's and grab a cup of soup and make it home (1.5 miles) with plenty of time. When I got to the store the soup "bar" it looked horrible. One of the three soups didn't even have a lid. The chicken noodle, which I had selected, was almost completely out so I had to take the smallest size they offer. I had to pull the serving bowl up and tip it to the side in order to fill my small cup. It seems to me that the "fresh" bar is loaded in the morning and not given any more attention for the rest of the day. Now it was time to go to the "express" lane since I had one item! There was a back log of at least 4 people already. The guy in front of me had at least 16 items in the 10 item lane, and the checker said nothing. This was the slowest "express" line I have ever been in. I saw a guy leave the line 3 spots behind me and go to the regular line and leave a minute before I did. There were plenty of people clocking in and out and walking around, but they never opened another "express" line. I can say that my wife will continue to shop here due to the close proximity, but I will never come back for lunch/soup again. I didn't make it back to the house until 1:24. read more

The use of plastic at this store is unconscionable! I wish they had an option of using paper boxes or paper bags in the vegetable department and the pastry department. I don't know if the plastics used are recyclable but I doubt it. Please give us an option. I do use cloth bags to put vegetables in but not a big variety of vegetables to choose from. If I could go lower I would. This store is the absolute worst especially for an upscale town. I don't know how they get away with continuing to do business in Barrington. The store is filthy, the quality of the produce, meat and fish is poor at best and the employees could care less about the customers as they talk about who's going on break next and have conversations amongst themselves as opposed to focusing on customers as they are checking out. You can't tell a package clerk from a manager so hard to tell who may be "in charge". We need to run this store out of town and bring in a wegmans or roche brothers like any other affluent town in America has. I always have to pick through the organic berries to find a carton which isn't too moldy. I end up throwing 1/3 of the carton away each week after bringing them home Two weeks ago I bought broccoli crows which were LOADED with black bugs. I threw it out as they couldn't be washed out. This week I went and bought a Chia Pod (refrigerated, like yogurt) and it was 5 weeks past expiration. Prices are high. They charge for ALL bags and claim this is town law. Their food is poor quality. I WISH there was another option closer. I will now be driving 15 miles for East Side Marketplace which has the same prices but great quality produce and fresh food. I ended up wasting the $ because by 3 days later when I went to make a salad with it, it was bad. Also, both packages of berries I bought had 0 flavor. Although extremely chaotic and disorganized, that wasn't the worst part of my shopping experience. It was our cashier who's name was Josh who was verbally harassing his bagger, yelling at him and degrading him which he labeled was due to his disability and lack of hearing. It was absolutely nauseating watching him raise a finger to point at him and shove things in his face yelling at him for doing a poor job. This bagger, Steven, was the friendliest face I had seen. I love Shaws in Barrington. I used to shop S&S Seekonk and Shaws EP. I usually shop on Monday nights or Sunday morning. Both those places are crazy busy. Shaws Barrington is quiet and clean. The deli is only OK. They don' t offer Boars Head. They do have decent prepared hot foods. The "Butcher / Seafood" area looks good. I prefer to use more specialized stores for those. You can find some higher end item here like fois gras and truffle oil. MY BOTTOM LINE, This place is quiet and clean. There aren't a million kids running around and people yelling into cell phones blocking the isles. I have never had a long check out line or had to bag my own groceries. These are the little things that count for me while shopping after a long day at work. read more

Shopping at Shaw's in Barrington is convenient with very helpful employees in the back of the store - especially the meat market, deli, and fish department. But the helpful and pleasant employees in the back of the store should train the cashiers in the front of the store in how to treat customers. The cashier and checkout experience is generally dreadful with little attention given to the customer. And after years of shopping at Shaw's I see a consistent pattern of of problems with cashiers. Before describing my encounter today, please understand i am generally not inclined to write a negative review about any business. But after repeatedly encountering bad experiences in the Shaw's Barrington checkout lane I am compelled to write this. Tonight's cashier experience was a classic example of a total disregard for customers. I was in the express checkout lane behind a woman with a number of fresh grocery items including lobsters. The lobster bag was checked first, and the cashier noted it was leaking seawater but continued to pass it over the scanner and scale as the filthy lobster water soaked the surface. Rather than wipe it up with a paper towel and soap spray, the clueless employee proceeded to pass all of the woman's other items, including fresh produce, through the puddle of lobster water on the scanner. She looked dismayed but was apparently afraid to complain, other than to ask for another plastic lobster bag, which was not available. As the customer was paying for her groceries and lobsters, I asked the cashier if he intended to wipe off the surface. He responded with a surly comment that he had no paper towels. I suggested he stop and get some to clean up and he said again he had no towels. I then told him to not pass my groceries through the disgusting puddle and he reluctantly held each item above the surface. I paid cash and shook my head, waiting for the Shaw employee to say something like thank you for shopping here, but the arrogant Young cashier said nothing. I then thought about how a supermarket must have incredible standards of cleanliness, but the cashier had zero understanding or regard for such standards. And then I thought about every customer's groceries that followed me through that checkout lane of spilled lobster seawater. After the recent renovation the store has improved with function and cleanliness. They have good sales and you can earn points on their APP. Overall a good shopping experience. Improvements can definitely be made on customer service. Market Basket has friendly employees that go out of their way to be helpful. Protein and nutritional bar central. Lots of unique protein bar names and flavors I haven't seen in any other stores. The organic and natural food isles are extensive, and include a good amount of items on sale. Plus, the clientele here is wonderful! Super friendly customers who don't behave like traditional Rhode Islanders; they're actually social, create conversation while waiting in line, and are even helpful in terms of finding products and choosing flavors. The workers here are also very friendly and helpful, but I love the type of people this place attracts. We need more of them here in Rhode Island. read more

I've tired to give this store so many chances, but today I'm done! I again was over charged an a item. When I went back into the store the service desk was closed, at 12:00 noon on a Saturday? I finally found someone, who finally found someone, and was told she would be over in a moment and headed in the opposite direction. I then said, forget it and left. This happens a lot where the scanned price is wrong. I have spoken to a manger before, and was told to come back and they will refund me the price difference. I feel that if you can't seem to get the price scanned correct perhaps you should give the product to the costumer.. Taking time to return to the store isn't always convenient. I understand accidents happen, but it truly seems to happen a lot at this store. (Updated June, 2016) News Flash! In April 2014, a survey of Consumer Reports readers ranked Shaw's 54th out of 55 supermarkets. (That's BAD!) The rankings also named Shaw's as one of the 5 most expensive supermarkets in the country. This is a good supermarket in the sense that it is attractive, clean and well-stocked. However, the prices are definitely high. During the nine years that I've been going there, they have raised their prices frequently, even during the economic downturn, and definitely faster than the rate of inflation. They do put SOME popular items on sale frequently, which is apparently part of their strategy; but the vast majority of high-priced items never go on sale. An example of their high prices is Campbell's condensed soups. In 2007, Shaw's charged $1.88 per can for most flavors -- that was at a time when the soups could be purchased for $1.09 to $1.49 at most other markets. Today, in 2016, Shaw's is charging $1.99 or $2.19 (the price changes from time to time), while other markets still charge as little as $1.39 for some flavors. Why Shaw's is price-gouging on a common convenience food, I don't know. Their frozen convenience foods are especially expensive, even more expensive than Tom's Market (a little gourmet market in Warren). For example, Tom's charges $2.89 to $2.99 for Stouffer's single-serving entrees (depending on whether or not they have meat). Shaw's charges $3.99 for all entrees. Similarly, Tom's price for Smucker's preseves (in 2014) was $3.19; Shaw's price was $3.99. Tom's price for Hood half & half (in 2015) was $3.19; Shaw's price was $3.79. Shaw's sells Breyer's gelato for about 80 cents more than Tom's. Those are big differences. In mid-2013 I went to Tom's Market to buy the ingredients for a favorite dish that I make. The next time I made the dish, I went to Shaw's to save some money, and I paid more. It's true that Shaw's puts their foods on sale frequently (only very popular items), but they do it in a sneaky way. Let's say that an item costs $5.99, but a reasonable price for that item would be $4.99. They'll put it on sale for $3.99 for one week, and then raise it to $4.99 the next week -- they are hoping that you won't notice that the sale price went up from one week to the next. One more thing about prices: As a promotional gimmick, Shaw's puts stickers all over the store that say "LOW PRICES EVERY DAY". The maddening thing is that they put those stickers on the MOST OVER-PRICED ITEMS! It's a kind of psychological warfare: They are trying to fool their customers into believing that they are getting value when they aren't. Shaw's deli counter has a reasonable selection of stuff. In the past, they always had a couple meats on sale, but that area of the display now has expensive gourmet meats in it. Shaw's sells fresh pizza which is actually quite good, and not overly expensive. The bakery department is a study in contrasts. Their refrigerated desserts are some of the worst I have ever tasted. I bought a single serving of strawberry shortcake once. It was made from a dry, rock-hard biscuit, some strawberry jam, and some artificial whipped topping. On the other hand, their bakery breads and muffins are pretty good. Be careful when buying ice cream: About 20% of the ice cream has been partially thawed and then refrozen. They are not as careful with frozen foods as they should be. Don't ask Shaw's to stock a special item for you. The manager will request it, but it will never appear on the shelves, even if they carry other items from the same brand. Shaw's is very wasteful of energy. The store is so well lighted that you would think you were on a stage. Their air-conditioning system sometimes has a condensation problem, so in the summer they HEAT the store at the same time that they air-condition it. However, in 2012 they put doors on the upright refrigerator units, which was good. Shaw's had self-checkout aisles which they removed in 2015 because people were stealing, so now all customers must check out with a regular cashier. As a result, getting out of the store now takes MUCH longer (and I go there less frequently). When they made the change, they apparently didn't put more cashiers on duty; they just allowed the lines to become longer. In December 2012, I dropped my rating from 3 stars to 2 because of the prices. Around that time I saw a flurry of price increases on already-expensive items, and I finally got angry. Stop & Shop (in Bristol) used to be much cheaper than Shaw's, but they renovated and increased their prices. Even so, you can expect to save 3% to 5% at Stop & Shop, and their selection is bigger. read more

If I could go lower I would. The store is dirty. The fish counter smells awful. The deli counter is always a bad experience. Many times I've gotten moldy berries from produce dept. There's a rude woman that works at the deli counter and I always dread ordering anything if she's there. The registers are a whole other issue. The employees never stop talking to each other. I once had a cashier turn her back and discuss tarot cards and where to get them with a cashier in a different aisle. I stood there and waited till she was done before I could tell her how many sodas I had in my cart. This was in the middle of checking out. I did not walk up to her as she was having the convo. I've lived here for 20 years and I'm tired of having only one option in town for food shopping. Also why does the cart return on the bank side have one railing bent inwards? Will that ever get fixed? We deserve a better store for the taxes we pay in this town. read more

Nice store, but since they started not using plastic bags it's such a pain in the ass to use the self checkout. The machine constantly says you removed or added something to the " bagging area" and that you need assistance.. So then you give the look to the employee to come help and what does she do? Turns her head all awkward as if she didn't see you and walks away.... Do your job. read more

They have very little selection (only italian sausage, no other kind, ever!) The produce guy lectured me on how to raise my toddler. The bread in the bakery has zero flavor. However, the people who work there are very very friendly and helpful, except for a guy in the produce section who is a grump. I think I will go to Whole Foods from now on. Especially after this SCAM they have done with the Big Holiday Win game, its almost over and I hear nobody has won anything! read more

I have such a love/hate relationship with this Shaws. It''s the cleanest and closest to me, so if they have an item on sale that I need, i tend to go here. Friendliness of the staff is definitely hit or miss. The prices here seem higher than other Shaws. My biggest complaint though is expired product. I consistently find expired refrigerated products!!! I find myself shopping here less and less. read more
