I'm lactose intolerant and have a terrible time finding vegan ice cream. Usually if I'm lucky enough to find some, it's either chocolate or vanilla. This place has a ton of creative vegan flavors and I can't tell you how much I appreciate it. I tried the cookies and cream flavor and it was so rich and creamy, and was LOADED with Oreo cookie pieces. They also have different kinds of cobbler - we tried the peach and it put my favorite aunty's cobbler to shame. Super flavorful, and just the right amount of dough. I will definitely go back again to try more flavors of ice cream and cobbler. read more

Not worth it! This is what they call 2 scoops and charge $7 for . So disappointing. My niece got one scoop and had more and the young server ignored me when I brought it to her attention. Post Covid Review: The customer service is excellent and the ice cream is delicious! I especially love that they do not have a lot of additives in many of their flavors. My husband and I have been going to this place since they had a Lakeview location; it's been nice to see them come up in terms of the latest shop location. My favorite ice cream flavors are the Honey Graham Cracker, Lunchroom Butter Cookie, and the Peach Cobbler. There's no other ice cream shop in chicago that is making ice cream like this, so they truly have something special. A few things of note that are less than satisfactory: 1. If you roll up hoping to get ice cream quickly, you will likely be waiting a long time (even if there's only a few people in front of you). They have a really inefficient system for ordering (go to area one, get your temperature taken, go to area two look a form, fill out form in a very specific way and put form in clear packet on glass for staff to read, answer the staff when they ask you about the form that's in the clear packet, remove form and pocket it as a souvenir, pay for ice cream). They would be much better off streamlining things a bit. 2. If you do curbside pick up (which I highly recommend) through grubhub, they will not pick up the phone if you listen to the prompts. You have to press * which is not given as an option in their prompts on the phone. 3. Their chocolate ice cream is not good...it's a standout because all of their other flavors that I've tried had been excellent. Maybe I had it on a bad day but it tasted watery (like more mild than the most mild Hershey's chocolate bar), if you are craving chocolate ice cream I would skip this. This place is fire. Everything is made in house and they have great customer service. They'll make sure you're taken care of. We pruchase for the 1st time. July 23, 2021 The people were very friend and their politeness was on full display. The facility was bright and the place overwhelming clean. The eye gate was perfect. Honey cinnamon graham crackers ice cream in a cup was interesting and will try another favor next time possibly. The ice cream was very sweet and over powered the favor, while the cinnamon was asleep. We got a pint, 1/2 butter pecan and 1/2 black walnut. The butter pecan product was very soupy when opening the pint. The young lady that started packing the product, failed to use freeze ice cream in part. The soupy ice cream at bottom of container was particularly transferred to the pint. Another man assisted after requesting the ice cream be packed side by side rather top and bottom. The side by side was requested when it was ordered. We went to a quiet area in The GAP to pack the ice cream in to the waffle cone. The became a mess do to the softness of the ice cream as a result of the young lady scoping from the bottom container(soupy). The waffle cone was very good. Sooooo Happy Juneteenth Folks! This black owned ice cream shop was listed as a must try. From being black owned, homemade to vegan options, this place does it all. Just a tip.. if you go either be the first one there or go one hour prior to closing. Why you ask? Because there is no line no wait! I waited in line 1.5 + hours just to get to the cashier. Upon entering you're in sweets heaven with the amount of options. From sundaes, to milkshake, combinations etc you're overwhelmed. (so take a look at the menu ahead of time so you don't hold up the line). The staff is quick, friendly and incredibly knowledgeable. If one person doesn't know something, you don't need to wait for a manager to clear up the confusion. There are other team members who know the menu. I ordered a Juneteenth special which was a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top of a 7 oz size of regular peace cobbler for $6.19. I switched out the regular vanilla for the vegan homemade ice cream. I also ordered a child size scoop of the raspberry cookies and cream. TASTYYYYYYYYYY! Amazing. Another tip: there is vegan peach cobbler and vegan brownies to go with the 7+ vegan ice cream options. Not to mention they have some of the best ice cream in Chicago and the best in the Bronzeville area. My wife, my daughter and I visited Shawn Michelle's this past Sunday afternoon. It was our first time there. When we got there we had to wait outside for a few minutes due to the Covid 19 regulations, but that wasn't an issue at all. Once inside and at the counter my wife and I gazed at the menu for a few minutes before ordering. Their menu is quite extensive for ice cream so if its your first time visiting you may be a little overwhelmed like I was. Once the overwhelming feeling wore off, I ordered a brownie sundae. Unfortunately they were out of brownies so I decided to try a flavor I've never had; I ordered 2 scoops of honey cinnamon graham cracker and my wife ordered 2 scoops of banana pudding. We received the ice cream within a few minutes of waiting and we ate it in the car. Let me tell you, delicious doesn't even begin to describe how good this ice cream is, and its homemade as well as all the items they sell. I think the honey cinnamon graham cracker just might be my new favorite flavor. Baskin Robbins has nothing on this place. As a matter of fact they're even better than Rainbow Cone. My daughter who is 3 enjoyed the ice cream as well and she is a very picky eater. If my daughter enjoyed it, you must be doing something right. Although I live on the far south side I will definitely make a trip for the ice cream. Its well worth the drive. Where do I start..... I rode past here and did not see a line out the door so I stopped in. First off, the space is bright and inviting. Customer service was a 10/10, the staff was knowledgeable and very friendly. Now on to the ice cream....12/10, I got a sundae with the bourbon ice cream + pound cake + whipped cream + pecans + sprinkles (don't judge me, judge yourself). The ice cream was sooooo good, creamy and packed full of flavor. Honestly the piund cake wasn't needed, because the ice cream is good on its own. My brother got a milk shake with the graham cracker (?) and I hate milk shakes, it was great. As long as there's no line (which there usually is), I'll be back. Absolutely love Shawn Michelle's! There is always a long line for a reason - the treats are incredible and the employees are super friendly! Don't worry, the line moves pretty fast! We've been here a handful of times and always had a great experience. We've tried a handful of the ice creams and treats, my personal favorite is the blueberry cobbler topped with cinnamon graham cracker ice cream - SO GOOD! The ice cream and cobblers are really the standout items here but the cookies and other baked goods are also solid. Regarding COVID, they've really taken it to the next level to promote safety in the store. You now get a paper menu and mark how many of each order you want. You then put your paper menu inside of a plastic sleeve and the employee will review then fill your order. It really helps with the flow and prevents people needing to take their masks down to speak. read more

I will say that I am so happy that this place lived up to its hype. I waited outside for a while it was extremely hot, however a gentleman came by with small cups of water offering it to the customers that were outside waiting in line. When we finally made it inside we were greeted by a gentleman that asked if this was our first time here or not and showed us how to enroll on line so that we can receive discounts on our purchases. I ordered strawberry cookies and cream, 3 scoops since it looked delicious. The ice cream was nothing short of a miracle, and the scoops were a generous size. Now for the things I feel need improvement, people waiting in line would be a lot happier if they had menu's so when they did make it inside they would know what they wanted. They offer kids sundaes (whatever flavor you want in a smaller scoop size + whipped cream & rainbow sprinkles). You can get a maraschino cherry on top if you want. Only con - no hot fudge. They have chocolate syrup that they can heat up for you, but it's not the same. That said, there's a wide variety of ice cream flavors (even for vegans) that seem worth checking out. I must say I love..love..love Shawn Michelle's icecream . I am happy about the location being in historic Bronzeville. The staff was so very friendly and helpful and it was so very refreshing. Now on to the divine icecream. I was so delighted to try the various flavors because they provided a tasting on them. What I chose was the rum raisin (freaking amazing), the banana pudding ( slap your mama good), and the blue moon flavor ( creamy fruity delishness) . I also took home some of their peach cobbler. I have already planned my return trip to get more of their delicious icecream . I must say I fell in love with this icecream and Bronzeville has made a good addition to the neighborhood with this gem. !! I know this is an ice cream parlor, but the brownies are soooooooo delicious! Yes, the ice cream is good, especially the Praline & Cream, it is the best that I have ever tasted! My 5 year old was completely satisfied with the SuperMan flavor, that is yellow, blue and pink - she was quiet for about 15 minutes, while she ate it. For me, that's a win! I came to Shawn Michelle's a while back by myself and absolutely loved it, from the service to the ice cream I loved it all! When I suggested to my coworkers we should go, we walked in and were met by rude staff that were not kind to us. My supervisor asked if the cobbler and ice cream contained any nuts because she had a severe nut allergy, the worker rolled his eyes and walked away from her as he said no. He did not care. It would've been very unfortunate if my supervisor had an allergic reaction. Another coworker cut herself very badly on her leg from the couch she sat on and was bleeding. When she went up to the counter to notify staff, the girl at the counter looked at her, said "ok" and walked away. No apology, nor did the girl ask if my coworker was ok at least. We all enjoyed the ice cream very much but as far as experience goes, there was a huge lack of good customer service from staff. I feel bad for even telling my team about Shawn Michelle's.
