The ladies at Shawkat's were very helpful in assisting on what to select and how best to order a larger quantity of items. Our selections were chicken kebabs, cabbage rolls, grape leaves, meat pies, spinach pies, tabouli and hummus. Everything was very delicious. The cabbage rolls were enormous and flavorful. Hummus and chicken kebabs were also standouts. The spinach pie was unique, very lemony. The ladies were also taking fresh baklava out of the oven when I arrived to pick up my items, so I added a few to my order including regular baklava and rolled baklava. Both were wonderful! Wow! This place will knock your socks off! All the food has so much flavor! We had the Mediterranean salad, cabbage roll, and chicken kebob platter. The chicken was charred to perfection and the cabbage roll had that little extra something that just sent it over the top. (Cinnamon? Nutmeg?) So the food is absolutely incredible! I had the sampler platter. The stuffed grape leaves are a religious experience, because as soon I put them in my mouth my shoulders slumped and I said "oh God". The kibbe is incredible (kibbie is sort of like a hush puppy stuffed with meat). The falafel was also impeccable. The tabouli and hummus were great. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is the place needs to cleaner, but this is the best Middle Eastern food I have ever eaten! read more

After our first experience where we shared a Mediterranean salad, we have been back there several times within the next week to eat that salad. It's sad to see what's happened to this place. Previously, the handmade from scratch quality of the food was present in every dish that you ordered is what kept me coming back. I've noticed that there has been a change in kitchen staff and the difference in quality has been immediately noticeable. The food lacked the authenticity and freshness it once had. The bread now has a disappointing off dry, and flat texture that pales in comparison to the pillowy richness that it used to have. And the veggies have a cold, stale taste that makes the food bland. They have a stone brook oven where they bake fresh Latif bread where they can make zattar bread, lebna zattar, cheese bread, honey lebna, cheese lebna. If you have never tried these breads then you must come here. If you have tried this bread and you are reading this review then I apologize for the fact that you are now going to ditch whatever appointment or career interview you had and rush directly to this restaurant. Don't let the decor fool you, this place composes dishes as Beethoven does symphonies. I really enjoy the food to this place. I order the kafta kabob platter and it is delicious. The only problem I have with this place is the consistency. One time the service is really good, and the other time the service is really bad. Also, sometimes when you walk in the restaurant there is this smell of burnt food, and for me, my nose is sensitive so the smell bothers me. This place has amazing Mediterranean food. I eat in restaurants all over the country, and Shawkats has the best Tabouli and Hummus of any place I've ever been. Everything is super fresh and expertly prepared by the owner Shawkat (pronounced shao-cot) and his wife. My mother and I eat here all the time and I've never been disappointed by the food. To be fair, it doesn't have a lot of atmosphere since it is in a strip mall, but the food more than makes up for it. Everything is really good, but I especially go for their hummus, taboulli, and their meat pies. The meat pies have this earthy spice quality that is just magical. They are sort of a pie dough filled with meat, pine nuts, and what I would guess is cardamom. It's not a highly visible restaurant. but is definitely worth your trouble to find. read more

Had the gyro platter, falafel, and kebbi (spelled ?). Everything was nailed down to the pita which was made in-house. The sandwich was delicious and full of the yogurt sauce that we all want so badly, but most places skimp on! Not here! They recently remodeled and it looks very nice. It is the best Mediterranean place i've had yet. The Greek salad had an amazing dressing. I always order Greek salad with Gyro meat, which isn't really on the menu, but they make it for me anyway. Nice, right? Their little desserts are mouth watering. The last time I was there I had called in my order and she forgot to add the desserts. When I went to get them she was very apologetic and gave me extras. If you like hummus and tabouli drive there now. The down sides are that there isn't much seating and the location isn't ideal. You can call in an order for pick up, which is great.
