The filing was a bit bitter but nice flavor otherwise. Hummus is spot on but again the pitas are a bit too chewy for my preference. Mediterranean salad was large and full of fresh veggies and covered in feta. Dressing had an ok flavor but a bit too tangy similar to the spinach pie filling. (when was the last time you had a kebab that was charred on the outside but still juicy in the middle, or a falafel so tender and moist but still crispy and crunchy that you didn't need to douse it in sauce?) This place came recommended by a friend and it did not disappoint! I absolutely love places that treat you like they're cooking for a friend. The owner was running the counter today and we had a little chit-chat about how her restaurant is ran by all women, which I loved. She was very friendly & you could just tell by talking to her that she loves what she does. I ordered the chicken salad and a cabbage roll to try. When my food came, it took up the entire little table I was at! The salad was so fresh and the chicken was cooked well. All of the seasonings used in the salad were really good, too! The cabbage roll was yummy and had so much flavor. I took a few bites of each while eye-balling the dessert case. Needless to say, I ended up opting for two to-go boxes (that's how much food there was!) to try some baklava and another treat (I forgot the name). Both sweets were unbelievably good. I'm picky about baklava-I don't like it too wet or dry & this was just right. The other treat I have pictured had walnuts in it & was also a great one to try. First time at Shawkat's, and I loved my pies! I had the meat pie and the spinach pie, and both were excellent. I also tried the blackened chicken wrap, which was also delicious. I ordered the platter which came with hummus, tabouli and pita. Next time, I might skip the platter. Not sure if I got the B team pita last time, but it didn't seem as fresh as described by other Yelpers. I also tried the pistachio rolls for dessert, and they were so yummy! Decided to head down 41st to Shawkat's arriving shortly after 10 (when they open). It's been remodeled since my last visit and was very nice with a great looking front door and nice outside seating. Very bright and clean-looking. Greeted immediately and ordered at the counter. I already knew I wasn't hungry enough for a platter with a lot of food. I ordered one egg roll, a small tabouli and a Dr. Pepper all for $8.11. I chose one of the 5 booths so I could watch weather reports on the TV in the corner. My meal was quickly brought out and it was perfect! The cabbage roll was a good size and the small tabouli was excellent.
