This rating is based only on service not the food since we never got around to eating. Walked in around 7 on a weeknight stood around waiting to be acknowledged for about 5 minutes. Finally when waitress acknowledges us she looks around the dining area and says it will be about 40 minute wait because they were busy. Hmmmm there were 3-4 seats open at the bar and a few at end of a long table in the bar area and my party of 2 was the only ones standing waiting to be seated, yet a 40 minute wait really? Apparently on Thursday evenings they have live (extremely loud) music so the tables in the main dining room are full all night, or maybe this restaurant just doesnt like tourists visiting? And here I thought this small town thrived on the tourism industry, guess not all restaurants on the main drag subscribe to that theory. No loss to me, I went down a few doors, was seated right away and had amazing mexican food and margaritas in a welcoming, fun environment called El Sombrero. wish I could give this place zero stars. Signing up on yelp! just to warn other not to eat here! Went here on Monday night. there were open tables and we had to wait 15 min to be seated. Waited for over an hour for our food. the onion ring, french fries, and crab cakes all arrived cold. we would have sent everything back but we didn't want to wait for another hour! the waitresses were snotty and inattentive. Awful! This place would be out of business in 2 minutes if if it were in Portland! We went to SharkBites last night and will not be back. The clam chowder was good but the taco's we got were awful. There were 4 or 5 tables and 3 wait staff and we had to wait so long we almost got up and left. The menus are dirty, I felt like I had to go wash my hands after touching it. The quality and quantity of food is ridiculous for the price. I have never been impressed with the service but the food made up for it, but not this time. Instead of the service getting better, the food got worse. There are too many other seafood places in town to go to this substandard establishment. read more

Wow! We read the reviews before choosing this dining establishment so we were prepared for spending some time here. Yes, the wait for the meal is long. Here in America we expect everything to be pre-made and fast. In Europe it's common to spend a few hours at a restaurant in good conversation with friends and family. So now that you're prepared for a wait, relax! The food is worth it. We started off with fruity cocktails and a nice selection of beers. Appetizers were crab cake which were very fresh. We each ordered from the special of the night menu (perch and cod) and the preparation was excellent. Our son had the clam chowder which he gave two thumbs up. Dessert was chocolate gelato. At nearby tables many people had ordered from their fish taco menu which also looked very tempting. The staff was friendly and our water glasses were always full. Considering the area, the restaurant was full on a Thursday night. We were the last family to arrive for dinner (around 8pm) and be seated at the last of 11 tables. We recommend this restaurant so go in, sit down and relax; if you're in a hurry- go to McDonald's! read more

4 stars for the food, minus 1 for the service. Good lord this place is slow. Of further irritation was the fact that none of the servers knew anything about the menu. But the food, once it finally arrived, was quite good. The clam chowder wasn't thick, and in my opinion that was actually an improvement. I don't care why they make it that way, it's tastes great and having it thin was a surprising and pleasant change of pace on an old classic that is usually pretty much the same no matter where you go. The calamari appetizer was a bit over-breaded for my taste, but the batter was seasoned and tasty. For my main, I had the black-bean veggie burger, and it was spicy and good. I would have preferred they didn't put the chipotle sauce on it as it was a bit heavy for what I was wanting, but over all the dish was good. My wife and friend also enjoyed their meals, and we were satisfied after having just spent 7 hours on the road. Overall, their service needs vast improvement, i.e. don't just rely on stuffing your waitresses (entirely female staff) into the tightest shirts possible. Work on having them actually know the menu and how things are cooked, having them come regularly to do refills, and work with the cook staff to increase turnaround times. If those things are done, this will be an excellent little restaurant. read more

Great casual restaurant, connected to surf shop. Full bar. Here for lunch. Great oysters --- me: fried in a sandwich, wife: grilled rare by request. All were highest quality, and hers were indeed grilled rare as requested. Mom's halibut sandwich also excellent --- generous halibut portion nicely battered and fried. French fries with the sandwiches were best I've had in a while. Only downside was the Caesar salad: dressing neither lemony nor anchovy-y. Thoroughly enjoyed our lunch! read more

The service was terrible! We waited at least 10 minutes to be acknowledged by the waitress, although we were sitting at the counter in plain sight. The food took AN HOUR to arrive, and when we asked the waitress if our order would be up soon, she gave us a blank look, said she "only puts the order in the computer" and only then went to check on the hold up. The kitchen was literally a few feet away. She came back and told us the kitchen had been "slammed", and our order would be up in 10-15 minutes. No apology or offer of a drink or anything. When our food came, she said she "finally wrangled it out of the cooks", like she had had done something exceptional to get it to us an hour after we ordered. Very nice staff but expensive food served COLD in a filthy atmosphere. We think we've figured out why it is so dark there...so you have a harder time seeing the gnats, peeling paint, food freshly ground into the carpet and high prices. Food was decent. Traveling to coos bay from medford we have been there 3 times. The place is pretty small so we could over hear the waiters talking about how the are going to act really nice to a certain table just to get more " yelp reviews"....nice, and it was obvious they did because we didn't get the time of day, never refilled our drinks or came to check on us... I also had a $10 gift certificate that I cashed in my air miles for, so I thought what the heck, I'll get to shark bites. The gift certificate was specifically for shark bites with their address and name in it. We were denied using it because they said that company fired them for not selling enough coupons...????? The first few times I tried this place I absolutely loved it! The halibut Taco's were delicious & the onion rings were probably the best I've ever tasted. Super fresh, flavorful. Was very obvious someone in that kitchen had passion & talent. I also remember there was a fairly large group of us (maybe 8-9 people) & I was nervous that the waiter didn't write down any of our orders and STILL got everyone's order right! I remember the only thing I wasn't crazy about was the clam chowder (its really thin\ watery & I like it thick, creamy). Other than that. Fantastic. A little spendy for the area & being that it was a casual lunch atmosphere, but worth it for special treats. However a few months ago I stopped in for a to-go order and was very dissapointed. I ended up throwing it in the trash just after looking & smelling it. I ordered clam strips & they were SO huge & fishy smelling, there was no way I was even going to taste it. I always figured someone must have screwed up my order & I ended up with some type of fish. It was super greasy & unpleasant looking however. By that time I was already home & upset that I didn't want to return it. I do plan on giving this place another try in the future since this was a one time "fluke", but it will not be a to-go order. read more

Seemed like a really cute quaint place, but eater beware! After waiting an hour-ish for food, we got one meal with cardboard fries. They were so oil soaked that they were barely edible. When asked about the fry quality, the waiter replied saying, "They were normal quality fries." We choked them down, but then my sister noticed something strange with her food. She had ordered calamari, but she had gotten clams. Luckily, she wasn't allergic. We pointed this out to the waiter, and she whisked the plate off to the kitchen. Five minutes or so later, she explains to us that they are out of calamari. My sister regretfully ordered popcorn shrimp. Another fifteen minutes later, she finally receives them. Our meals are completed. Upon inspection, we notice the fries are nice and crisp, looking like normal fries do. Our previous fries were obviously over cooked, and extremely oily. Then, like the true food critic she is, my sister opens a shrimp to notice the poop vein (the part of the shrimp where it excretes its waste) has not been cleaned. She had pretty much been eating shrimp poop. This restaurant has left such a bad taste in my mouth, I am glad I am from out of town. read more

Three and a half stars...Ate at Shark Bites after a long drive down the beautiful Oregon Coast. With all the oysters around here, I was hoping to grab a couple dozen on the half shell, unfortunately, they only have cooked oysters...and a cooked oyster is a wasted oyster in my opinion. We had the tuna poke appetizer, clam chowder, a house salad, steamed clams, halibut fish and chips, and the rockfish fillet. Everything was quite good, just maybe a wee bit toasty on the fish and chips batter. Only thing that really hurt the experience was the timing in the kitchen. Our table for two was one of those small round ones, and so when our order came out, all of it at once, there wasn't room for everything. The solution from the waiter was, oh, well, I'll take your fish and put it on the warmer until you make room. So...kitchen timing is off, thus we should eat warmed over fish? No, we should eat new fish, and not feel like we better hurry up on the appetizers. Anyway, food ended up better than expected, just watch the service. read more

I usually don't give a place only 1 star but in this case I'll make an exception (since there is no zero rating). We ate here a couple years ago and the food and price were amazing. The clam chowder was absolutely fantastic. We came over on 12/3/16 with some friends to go see the Shore Acres lights since they had never been. We kept telling them about how awesome Sharkbites was. I guess we should have just kept quite. We got there at about 4:00 and they were packed. Since we had been there before we figured that it was worth the wait. It took about 15 minutes to finally get a table (there was 5 adults and 2 kids). It now appears to be a wanna be hipster spot. I doubt that anybody who works there now is over 25. Not that that's a bad thing if they know what they're doing. I'll go in order. The sodas were excellent. That was the only good thing about our experience. We ordered 4 bowls of clam chowder. 2 of which came AFTER we had our meals and the waitress tried to give the 2 that did come on time to the wrong people. They came with what was supposed to be a garlic kaiser roll that looked more like a hoagie roll with some butter and garlic salt but no flavor. The chowder was nowhere near what it used to be. No flavor at all. In fact I didn't see or taste 1 piece of clam and I got a bowl. A can of Snow's clam chowder has more than all of our bowls combined and taste's better to boot. I ordered the beer battered prawns. They looked good when they arrived but were absolutely dripping in oil. In fact when I picked up one of them oil literally poured out. The fries were O.K. but nothing to write home about. My wife was not that hungry so she just got clam chowder. My son got the Baja Tacos. Again no flavor at all. Our grandson got a kids quesadilla which he didn't eat. Not once did the waitress come by and ask if everything was O.K. So for 4 bowls of clam chowder, beer battered prawns, Baja tacos, quesadilla, and 4 sodas. Are you ready for this??? $51.00 Yes, you read that correctly. FIFTY ONE DOLLARS! If the food is worth it I have no problem dropping that much dough on good food but when the food is not even mediocre??? Never Again. read more

Yikes! I hope this was just an off night for them. TERRIBLE. Pros: cute place, fruit infused water in canning jars, Halibut and onion rings were great Cons: literally everything else. We were a large group (my family of 7 plus grandparents). Because of that we expect a little longer for food to come. We ordered onion rings as an appetizer. They took about 25 minutes to come and with no plates. Our food took almost an hour. We watched table after table get their food, all of them had arrived after us. The manager came to talk to us and when I mentioned that has almost been an hour she snapped at me and corrected me that she just checked and we were still 8 minutes away from an hour. Wow! So 52 minutes of waiting with hungry kids. Next up... the food. Yikes. The kids ordered clam chowder and each ate one bite. It was pretty watery. If you like your chowder soupy, you may like it. We payed extra for bread to eat with the chowder and they brought us a hamburger bun. The calamari strips were either cold or luke warm depending on the plate. We payed full price plus an automatic gratuity. Bummer. Next time will try the place on the waterfront. read more

We had a delightful lunch on New Year's Eve. My husband had fish tacos and I had the chicken nachos....one of the best nachos I've had. They do something a bit smoky with the chicken and the dish was layered in a way that they were crisp and not mushy. We will sure be back. The only suggestion I have is the "first impression" as you walk into the restaurant side of the business. You walk into what looks like an old neglected deli area with an old time lunch counter...hang a sharp right and into a cleverly shabby chic dining room. The service and food were great! read more

Outstanding fish tacos. We tried the Spicy halibut tacos that were as fresh as the sea air in Coos Bay. For a town so close to the ocean, the dearth of good fish restaurants often disappoints. Sharkbites takes a big bite out of that problem, but be forewarned, the prices can top $10 bucks for a taco special. Our three spicy tuna tacos set us back $14.99. Still it was halibut and that's a pricey and delectable fish to savor. read more
