Had a weird experience at Shaq Mediterranean grill just now. Ordered some rolls and a side of falafel, the guy on the other side seemed not to know a lot of English, and that's fine cuz hey we're all immigrants! No worries at all! I ordered another 6 piece of falafel separately for 4.99+ tax and they told me to come back in ten. Came back and asked for some white sauce on the side, and the guy glared at me and said that it's 2.99. And that there already is some Tahini sauce in our bag. I honestly don't understand that if I paid 5 dollars and some change for 6 pieces of falafel, why I need to pay 2.99 for a measly serving of white sauce with dry falafel?? Anyway, husband and I get in the car, we head over to our movie where we're supposed to sneak in our food, and there's literally no other sauce container with our falafel, except the one that I asked for, and they asked me to pay for, and the low carb roll that I asked for, and paid extra for, is actually a regular wrap and not the gluten-free tortilla one. They also gave us 5 falafel instead of the 6 that we ordered. This was my second time at Shaqs, the first time being them double charging me for the same roll, and then forcing me to buy both the rolls because that's what they heard on the phone⁉ The food is great, but honestly 2.99 for this tiny serving of sauce is an overstretch, and you really don't need to charge people for sauce to accompany falafel, it should be a given. The store wasn't even busy at the time we went, it was our order and one pick up order of the guy who came after us. I really hope your business is doing well amidst covid, and the new wave that's hitting us but charging 2.99 for this serving of sauce isn't the move fam. I was told to try this place out, it's across our car wash place so we decided to check it out. Sorry I was let able to post photos because the food was piping hot & so flavorful that we devoured it all. We got the Tsaziki dip with pita bread, garlic fried with lamb shawarma wrap & a butter chicken wrap, along with their lentil soup. The meat so flavorful, no sauce needed. I ordered a variety of things figuring one of the many items might hopefully be passable. Staff was helpful. Food was ready fast and prices reasonable. Once I got back in my car to eat while I killed more time I was shocked. All the flavors melded together perfectly. All the textures were authentic and sumptuous. The quantities were more than generous. As I made it through each item not one single one disappointed. I had to forcible will myself to stop eating. Yummmmmm. I'm surprised I barely found out about this place. I went here on Friday late evening. One of the worker immediately greeted us with a smile and made us feel invited. I usually get lamb wraps but the hours for lamb cut off at 930pm. Luckily it was still available and I was able to get it! Yay! Anyways. I get the bomb wrap within a few minutes and asked for few sauces. Make sure to get the spicy one. So the wrap size is pretty big for it's price. It was juicy and tasty. Located right next to the auto centers of Santa Clara, the parking is not great but luckily this place hasn't gotten busy yet. I love Mediterrean and Middle Eastern food. I have my favorite restaurants, but was in the mood to try a different place. I looked at ShaQ's menu and the photos and thought, tonight is the night to try a new place. We ordered fries, chicken tikka masala platter, lamb shank platter, a side of chicken shawarma, falafels, and lamb and beef gyro via online. The food was ready fairly quickly. There were two customers ahead of me. I could tell the food was going to be good because the orders that were already packaged and bagged were large. This will be one of my favorite spots. I loved everything, except the fries. The were on the chewier side and did not seem fresh. That was fine because the rest of the food was so delicious. The portions are generous. Although, I would say they could have given more hummus a part of the platter. It looked like they gave one small tablespoon of it. The chicken shawarma was my favorite. The chicken tikka masala was flavorful. Between the two, I would get the chicken shawarma. I also tried the lamb shank and gyro. So good. I am not a fan of gyros, but this one was so good. I've been meaning to try this place since the first SIP order and finally made it there last night. Ordered online through grub hub, was ready by the time I got there. I appreciate that everything was spaced out for safety and the employees seemed nice. I was craving gyros and this reallllly hit. The wrap is long but skinny lol as you can see in the picture. Everything was extremely flavorful too! I really like the salad in the wrap and the platter. The fries were also surprisingly really good. I usually get the CHICKEN SHAWARMA on the ROCKS. Side of fries. The rice is really good. You can feel each individual grain of rice as you eat and its no dry or a mush. The subtle flavor of the rice complements the curry. It isn't just a plate with a bunch of things thrown on top of it. Each ingredient is integral to the dish and you can really tell that when you eat it. The meat is pretty tender and juicy. Fries are crispy on the outside but soft on the inside (AKA perfect) The seasoning on them gives them a lot of flavor too. Price is a little bit on the higher side but i'd say it is worth it. WOW. Unexpectedly delicious! When the hubby first brought me here, I was a little apprehensive at first. The location is somewhat random, the restaurant is outdated, and the menu looks dull. While ShaQ has your typical Greek and Mediterranean options, it also has a blend of Indian dishes like butter chicken and chicken tikka masala. For our dinner, the hubby chose the "half and half" special platter which is served with half a portion of rice, half a portion of fries, as well as a side of chicken shawarma and sauce, while I got the butter chicken platter which comes with rice, salad, hummus, and pita bread. Everything was prepared fresh to order so it did take some time for our food to be served, but we appreciated how they stuffed each box to the absolute max. The drive home was quite difficult thanks to that mouth-watering aroma. Boy, were we hungry! It was well worth the wait because everything tasted great. The butter chicken was incredibly tender and had a delightful buttery flavor. The rice was full and fragrant, while the salad added some much needed brightness. My only complaint was that the hummus was a tad thin in terms of consistency. The hubby loved his plate, enjoying the grilled taste of the chicken and the creamy sauce. The fries and rice may look heavy, but he finished it without a problem. It just goes to show that outward appearances can be misleading. The closest to New York halal cart food I've had in the Bay! We ordered the Half and Half Gyro Lamb and Beef special platters. The meat, rice, and sauces were all flavorful and worked well together. Highly recommend to anybody who misses the NY halal carts. I've been searching for similar food here (and been to every Halal Guys in the Bay Area in the process lol), and nowhere else has hit the spot like ShaQ has. I'm rounding it up because their pita bread is way too good to get a 3 star Yelp rating. The pita is soft and not too thick/breaded + the pairing with the hummus (and even the salad) tasted great. They didn't drench the rice and chicken with the sauce - it'll be extra cost if you want more, but that's fine - it feels healthier like this LOL. The staff here was also very nice - they took their time explaining what the difference between regular chicken shawarma platter and on the rock is. For the others that are also wondering the same thing, the platter includes chicken, rice, sauce on the chicken and rice, pita, hummus, and salad. Serving a drink "on the rocks" usually means "on ice," but at ShaQ, "on the rocks" means "on rice"! Intriguingly, most of the menu here consisted of casual Mediterranean eats like shawarma and falafel, but they also offered a few Indian dishes like Chicken Tikka Masala and Butter Chicken. Perhaps this was nothing more than a nod to the restaurant's location in Santa Clara, home to a sizable Indian population. But in any case, I couldn't help but try out the Chicken Tikka Masala platter, and this tomato-based curry with chicken breast cubes was served "on the rocks" over yellow basmati rice, along with a crunchy, creamy slaw of cabbage, cucumbers, and tomatoes; a potato wedge (colored yellow with turmeric); a thin but flavorful hummus; and triangles of chewy pita bread. This might be the first time I've had chicken tikka masala and hummus on the same plate, and all the flavors were incredible! I also got a side of the perfectly smooth and round falafel balls, which were crispy on the outside and green and herbaceous on the inside. They went nicely with the tahini sauce and the spicy red chili sauce that came on the side, along with a dollop of hummus from the platter! Speaking of sauces, though, this restaurant's creamy orange "ShaQ sauce" was also worth a mention, and it added a savory, unctuous flavor and mouthfeel to all the components of the plate. In addition to the CTM, I also tried the meaty, pleasantly chewy lamb shawarma and the dark meat chicken shawarma, both of which went nicely with the yogurt sauce and ShaQ sauce drizzled on top. Overall, this was a great pick for a casual bite of food in a rather unexpected location (surrounded by a car wash, auto repair shop, and a tire shop), but the service was super friendly, and everything came at a great value too! read more
