Asel has helped me with some of the most important nails for my milestones -- a new job, getting engaged, and soon to be my wedding. This nail salon is by far the best place I've been. Ownership is fantastic and you can tell how much Irena values the women that work there and her fantastic relationship with her clients. One thing I would love new clients to know is that your nails can take anywhere from 1.5 hours (for an experienced tech) to upwards of 3 hours for someone who is in training. However long your nails take they will be beautiful and for me my nails can last a month without chipping! The only reason I have to go back now for my nails is literally because of the grow out. The best manicures I've ever had have been from here. I've been twice, two different, nail techs, and both were very meticulous. The manicures take longer than other places I've been since they are so detailed. They really cleaned up my cuticles and dry skin making everything look so much better. I feel the gel polish they use is thicker, stronger and maybe higher quality than other places as well. Most of the ladies that work there speak very limited English so its best to come prepared with a good idea or visual of what you want done. The first gel manicure I got lasted just about 3 weeks til it started looking like it was really time to get it filled. I wanted to adore Shape of Nails because their work featured on Yelp and Instagram are super pretty, and their location is close to me, but unfortunately, my experience was simply okay. For the price you pay here, you should be ecstatic with how your nails turn out (which looks like the majority of their customers are, but again, it wasn't my personal experience)! I booked my appointment months in advance and sent them reference pictures for a flame design that I wanted done (their text-to-book system is very convenient, by the way; love that!). Closer to the date, something came up and I had to change it to a day earlier. No problem - they told me Jamila was available. I asked if she would be able to do the flame designs I had initially sent and they said yes. Ok, everything sounded good. I arrived at the salon, which is actually in a building with a bunch of different businesses, so you have to ring the door by calling SoN to get in. The only problem is that "Shape of Nails" is not listed in the call list, and that the name you should actually call is listed under "Irina," the owner. However, no one had told me this, so I couldn't get in using the call system and had to knock on the glass so someone who happened to be waiting in the lobby could let me in. Awkward start. So finally, I got into the salon and I got situated with Jamila. We decided to do a combination of light blue and dark blue flames, with a neutral color as the background. Everything up until the actual flame painting was fine; I was surprised at how much she carved out of my cuticle area, and the burning from the UV lamps was new (but fine if I took my hands in and out of the lamp at regular intervals), so it was fine but I was still a little tense throughout the appointment because of the possibility of some pain. The weird thing happened when it was time to paint the flames. Jamila simply could not do them. I had the initial reference picture pulled up onto my phone for her to copy, and she couldn't do it. She would try to paint something, look at it, decide she didn't like it, and then wipe it off before I could even look at her attempt. I think this literally happened for 30 minutes straight. It was just so strange considering the simplicity of the design (I've posted pictures) as well as the fact that it was RIGHT THERE for her to copy. I had even made sure to ask if she could do it when I changed the date of my appointment, so the realization that she couldn't do it was totally unexpected for me. Eventually, I ended up with something that looked more like lightning bolts than flames. The quality of the manicure itself was great, and the design looked interesting enough. Ultimately, though, it wasn't what I came in and paid for. Of course they asked me at the end of my appointment if I liked my nails, but I wasn't going to say "no" after sitting there for 2 hours and the entire salon was listening to me. So I left, ambivalent, because on the one hand the quality of the manicure was excellent and the design I ended up with was cool, but on the other, it just wasn't what I had envisioned. I stared at my nails all night and eventually contacted SoN and asked if I could come in for an adjustment the following day. Irina was able to see me and do some complimentary damage control so the design could resemble flames a little more. I am grateful for this, but overall, for a salon whose bio on Instagram is "We don't like boring nails, we get sad," I expected a simple design like this to be executed perfectly on the first try. read more

I LOVE THIS PLACE. I decided to try it out when a friend mentioned she heard they were good. I couldn't get an appointment right away, which immediately read as a good sign to me. If your hair girl or nail girl can take you immediately, she's not very good. Let's be serious. Having a bit of a wait and needing to be proactive for an appointment? They're probably good. Prices were great, on par with all the other salons in town, if not more reasonable, so I figured I would give it a shot. They take appointments via social media and text, which I also loved, because I can do that while I'm multi-tasking. They asked for a photo in advance of what I wanted to do, which I loved because I like crazy nails, so I wanted to be sure they could do what I wanted. I purposely picked something relatively simple, but they said no problem. When I arrived, the salon is inside a loft studio with other vendors, so it can be confusing to find, but once I did, the salon itself is small, clean and bright. I was greeted, sat down and introduced to Karina, my new nail goddess. She was super friendly, looked at the photo, asked me if I wanted to pick out colors, and got to work. This is NOT your average gel manicure. As I am typing away, my current gel manicure (the leopard one in my photos) is almost 4 weeks old. No chips, no cracks, just some growth of the nails, but it looks FLAWLESS still. A typical gel on me lasts MAYBE two weeks, but these seem to last forever. They do this thing where they put a clear blob of stuff on your nails, you flip your hand over and then do one finger at a time before painting your nails, and whatever that is is the ultimate godsend for your manicure. Normally my nails are cracking and chipping and peeling off after about 10 days, but this stuff prevents the cracks and chips and makes my manicures last way longer than they should. It also takes awhile, so this is not a place to go when you're in a time crunch, but like....WORTH IT. I have now been going to Karina religiously for a few months now and she is officially the best manicurist I have ever been to and I will sooner cut off my hand than let someone else touch them. Asel is amazing! She is always so professional and confident. I have gone in with some very complicated design ideas and she has pulled them off better than I could have expected. What I also adore about her is how she will tell you when an idea might not work, but also help you to come up with something that will. Being on trend is really important to me, and she is really good at advising. I teach 8th grade, and my 14 year old girls always swoon! To my humble opinion, this is the best manicure/pedicure place I've ever been to. I am very particular when it comes to my appearance (as every woman is). I changed countless locations in the past because a suboptimal 20min manicure that will damage your nails permanently is not my go to. The girls at Shape of Nails conversely are knowledgeable, carrying and professional. They won't destroy your nails in acetone or file half of your nail plate to the afterlife. They also are always willing to do a design on your nails or can recreate something from the internet. Please note- this is not a nail salon where you soak your hand in water or acetone, i don't know what techniques they use, however most of the mani is done with a tiny dremel looking tool. A close friend of mine recommended that I go to the salon as I have been doing my nails for a few years, but was having some difficulty due to recent surgery. The first time I went, the nail tech was over 15 minutes late to my appointment. She then rushed through the entire service and seemed very annoyed to be there. She cut my cuticles on several fingers to the point where I had blood and scabs for at least a week afterward. The manicure did last a long time, I can at least give that credit where it's due. The second time I went, I saw a different nail tech and she argued with me on the nails I wanted. I wanted a simple black manicure with stars on two nails. She did my nails navy blue, and for over $80, I expected the design to be really good but honestly I could have done a better job at home or having a friend do it. The gel on my nails was extremely uneven and bumpy. I later discovered when filing the top layers of the gel off that the lower layers of gel on my right hand were all under cured, sticky, and wet. This is the fast track to getting a gel allergy and is just completely unacceptable. Overall, two poor experiences is enough for me to just go back to doing my nails myself or seeking out a new salon. As expensive as this place is, the quality of the work just does not match up and the lack of professionalism in attitude and technique is unacceptable. I still tipped both times despite the work, but I do not recommend this place to my friends, and I will not be returning. Which really is a shame because all I hear is how fantastic this place is and I really wanted to love it. read more

I get my nails done regularly. I have gone here twice now. The first time was great. New technology, techniques for gel nails. However this last visit was not good at all. The technician hurried me and was unpleasant. It may have been her English isn't the best but she was making faces which made me uncomfortable. She wouldn't do anything I asked for. I wanted French manicure, she only painted it nude. She said she didn't have time and another client is coming . If you didn't have time to do what I what,,then advise me of it so I can make alternate arrangements. 7 out of 10 nails broke off within 3 day ! Their technique although odorless and cool, it is not strong like the typical powder acrylic nails. I got an email asking me to confirm my appointment through a link that does NOT work. I tried to send an email from the same email by clicking on "email us", and it was returned as the address does NOT exist. I searched their website and the website does NOT load. Finally, I called to leave a message and the voicemail was FULL and didn't accept messages. I finally called the next day and expressed my frustrations as this has happened twice (3 months ago) and yesterday. It is beyond unprofessional!! The fact that they charge $150 for a regular mani/pedi, you would think they can afford to hire an IT person to fix their issues.
