I do miss having the dim-sum cart experience, however ordering through the Toast App was super convenient for us. Everything was delicious and at least with ordering through the app, I didn't have to worry about trying to flag someone down of a specific item that was from another cart that would never pass our table before the pandemic lol. We also didn't mind paying the 15% service charge in addition to the tip, we figured it had to do with inflation. I've been looking for another good dim sum spot. Overall, it's good but not the best. You can seat yourself and you have to pay for everything using their QR code so make sure to bring your smartphone. Everything we ordered was good except the Shanghai soup dumplings that were a bit dry and didn't have good seasoning. The hargow could've also been juicier but overall it was not bad. We were a party of 3 on a Saturday and the place was pretty full but we didn't have to wait long for a table or for food. We ordered 13 dishes and paid $125 including tip. The food was not bad but also not great. Definitely could taste the lack of quality in ingredients. In the end, if you're craving dim sum this place *might* satisfy you, but you're probably better off paying slightly more/waiting for a table at Lin, which is still not the best but at least higher quality. read more

One of my favorite spots in Austin. They serve Dims Sums and Dumplings all week. You order and pay on their mobile app and they quick to bring your food out as it is prepared. This review is for 3.5 stars. I grew up in Austin, and Shanghai has been around for as long as I can remember. I have been here a few times before but then started going to New Fortune. Ever since New Fortune closed a few months ago, my family and I have needed to fulfill our craving, so back to Shanghai we went for some authentic dim sum. Due to COVID, they are taking appropriate precautions and are not currently pushing dim sum carts between tables. Instead, you scan a QR code on your phone and order from there. I do think the items are fairly priced. Be advised, there is an automatic 20% service fee that is added to your bill. Overall the dim sum is fine. The servers were nice and refilled our water often. The classic items (such as the siu mai and har gow) are tasty. I was a little bummed that the menu is rather limited. They did not have any beef tripe, hom sui gok, or fried taro puffs which are some of my personal favorites. I'm hoping they can add those on some time in the future. read more

Restrooms 0/10 Very dirty and smells bad for both men and women. Door for the women bathroom was open so I was able to see inside. Food 5/10 Some dishes are good, some dishes are not. For the quality/quantity the price is high. I recommend the steamed custard buns although the ratio of bun and custard is not great. I love Dim Sum and was happy to find this restaurant but I was disappointed with the experience. There is a sign that says wait to be seated but we ended up waiting over 5 minutes for anyone to even come to the front. Then the staff ignored us when they finally came to the front because they were bagging to go orders. I get that you're busy but it would have been nice to be acknowledged. We were about to leave when someone finally came to rush us to a table. There was practically no service. You order on an iPad type of device and they bring it to you. You pay and they automatically add 18% gratuity even though you barely get service. The food was good but that was the only thing that got any stars. read more

The food was amazing. The facility was a bit worn down, rustic and old, but all of that gave a great authentic Chinese restaurant vibe. They were very fast and polite, and the setting was gorgeous with lots of windows and lazy susans. The only thing I would change is that instead of the order by phone, I would love to have the experience of the waiter taking the orders, or having the dim sum trolleys. But I understand due to COVID, things may have to change. Nevertheless, I think I've found my new favorite Chinese restaurant. I was going to try out New Fortune. But I guess COVID killed the dim sum restaurant. I was specifically looking for a dim sum restaurant with carts running around with that nostalgic dim sum atmosphere. Unfortunately, Shanghai changed the way how they operate because reviews stated that they did have dim sum on wheels. The interior and deco are average. They do make you to order online instead of taking your order by hands. You also paid through the website where you order. BTW, this adds on a 20% on your bill. You can verify with my receipt. 2. Mixed Puff with Pork (2)-家鄉鹹水餃 $3.95 - The shell is too doughy and not crispy at all. The ingredients have minimum seasoning. 9. Chicken Feet w. Black Bean Sauce-豉汁蒸鳳爪 $5.95 - This is average and nothing stands out too much. I think most of the chicken feet with black bean sauce are bought frozen and heat them back up for convenience. 8. Pork Rib w. Black Bean Sauce-豉汁蒸排骨 $5.95 - The pork ribs are well seasoned. This is definitely one of the best dishes I had on that visit. 18. Shanghai Soup Dumpling (3)-小籠包 w/Vinegar w/Ginger $5.95 - It didn't come with the vinegar or ginger. The pastry is a bit too thick and doughy and the soup is ok. The filling is lackluster. It doesn't have that burst of flavor sensation when I bit into it. It is quite disappointing. 23. B.B.Q. Pork Rice Noodle Roll-叉燒滑腸粉 $6.95 - They ran out of BBQ pork and I agreed on the shrimp one. The rice noodle texture isn't smooth, but not too rough either. It doesn't have that freshness to it. The shrimp is fishy and not seasoned at all. I tried to force myself to eat it because I dislike wasting food. But I almost puked. 31. Pan Fried Leek Dumpling (6)-煎韭菜蝦餃 $10 - This is pretty good. They use a different pastry than the traditional dumpling. The ingredients are deliciously seasoned. This is the best dish I had on the visit. Pu'er Tea (Per Person) $2.50 - I wanted pu'er and chrysanthemum, but it's not on the ordering menu. The waitress told me just to order it and she would bring the combo tea over. If you want this combo, talk to the wait staff before you order. As you can see, the higher dollar items are a bit overpriced. Compounding it with the 20% service charge, that's quite a bit. The food quality is mixed and I would rather try other restaurants before coming back, if ever. read more

It's somewhat annoying to have to use your phone to order, but the restaurants wasn't very full and my idea of them coming around with Dim Sum carts wouldn't have been very practical. There's also a service charge for ordering that way, but I'm guessing this modest restaurant can't afford a programmer and needs to pay the website for the service. The food was a very pleasant surprise. We had several different Dim Sum dishes and shared them all. EVERYTHING was freshly cooked, piping hot and DELICIOUS! I've been craving dim sum and found this gem that satisfied my craving. I love shrimp rolls and theirs are really delicious! I also enjoyed their har gow. They have chili oil on the table - which is delicious! My husband loved the salt and pepper shrimp he ordered. The restaurant is very large inside with ample seating. You scan their menu and order via your phone. There is a service fee included in the price when you order fyi. They service was incredibly speedy and there was no wait at all. Dimsum in Austin :00 I was really surprised to find this place given the relatively few authentic Asian restaurants in the area. Walking into this restaurant felt like I was in China, traditional furniture, huge lazy susan's and grimy bathrooms. I was expecting a the dimsum to be rolled around in carts but everything you order through your phone which took away from the whole dimsum experience. The dimsum was only okay. A couple standouts - the custard steam buns and the har gao. The steam bun was perfectly moist and the custard just sweet enough. The har gao was chewy and delicious. We selected: fried chicken egg roll, pan fried pork dumplings, steamed Shanghai dumplings, steamed BBQ pork buns, steamed pork ribs with black bean sauce,shrimp shiu ma and the steamed sticky rice with chicken in a lotus leaf. Everything was good. The egg rolls were cooked perfectly. Flaky and crispy. Yum! No complaints on anything. We had a bit of a snafu with the shiu mai, but they actually made us fresh ones which was awesome. Thank you! There was only one server who was hosting and serving so I was worried, but she did an awesome job. I have always seen Yelpers order the sticky rice in a lotus leaf so this was my chance to try it. The food was very mediocre, not fresh, poor food quality, not good at all! Wait time for food was awful! It took them 30 minutes to bring us our first set of dim sum and then another 15 minutes to bring the rest out. The waitresses were not attentive to your needs- you order online and there's a 15% service charge automatically added to your receipt be careful because it lets you leave a tip on top of the service charge (I don't mind tipping high as long as they're attentive to your needs). First time here since the Fortune Chinese seafood dimsum is permanently closed. We ended up here. The place looked promising, clean well-kept and the growing number of diners seem legit to call this place good. They are understaffed obviously since the same waitress who seated us (it was still a "seat yourself" policy when we arrived) and took our drinks order is the same person bussing the tables, and there's another older Chinese gentleman that delivers the food to our table and another younger lady. The rest are all in the kitchen, which looks clean and well-kept also, as we can see though the glass doors/walls. Customers order through their app by taking a picture of their QR code and you also pay at the same time, we just had to enter our table number and the 15% tip is already included, which makes sense. However, getting charged at once after placing our orders is kind of annoying and it takes away our appetite and eagerness to enjoy our meal. They should have designed it to make their guests order under an open tab and pay at the end of the meal. Oh well, it might be their way to cope with understaffing and perhaps the COVID issue challenges. We still missed the cart going around and tempting us with delicious Dimsum delight selections. Food is not bad, not extra salty plus the hot jasmine tea is free, or maybe we missed putting it on or tab when we ordered through the app. We are not visiting this place again though, unless the Dimsum carts are back, plus the food served to us is just warm, unlike the table next to us. Great overall for dimsum I'm Austin ( I'm setting my bar low here). We have limited dimsum option so can't really complain. The flavor for each item is spot on! I still need to try the chicken feet, but the last visit included a sampling of the gai lan Chinese broccoli, which was absolutely perfect. I did also try the turnip cake and it is expertly done and is now on the "always order" shortlist. It's springy with a perfect crust. The front of house staff were very friendly and polite, which was honestly one of the only redeeming qualities of my experience here. Ever since New Fortune closed, this has become my "go to" place for Dim Sum in Austin. They have all the expected items, and since Covid you order off the menu with your phone. We were unsuccessful using the promoted coupon (2 for 1 mimosas), and the waitress was not helpful. Nonetheless, I'd still say it's currently the best place in Austin for Dim Sum at a somewhat reasonable price (vs a couple of downtown spots that are $$$). Just remember you're in Austin, so it's not going to rank with Dim Sum places in the East and West coast big cities. It's definitely what you would expect, but nothing was especially remarkable. I was also disappointed there was no mayo sauce with the shrimp ball or crab claw (which is usually standard at most places). After seeing a post in our local foodies group the other day about dim sum at Shanghai Restaurant, we gave it a try on Sunday. From that post, I was glad to have the heads up on some wonky stuff and prepared to give them leeway because we'd be there during the Sunday lunch rush. Reservation: I made a reservation online. They charge $10 + a 15% service fee. The website said this would be credited to the bill, but it wasn't and I couldn't get the attention of waitstaff to ask about it. Which leads to... Service: They are clearly understaffed. Again, we tried to cut them some slack about it. Getting drink refills was like playing a not-fun game of "Where's Waldo". We only won once out of four attempts. Ordering: There's a QR code on the table. You use the camera on your phone to scan it and it takes you to a website where you order your food and drinks. You pay upfront rather than at the end of the meal. There's a $15 service fee attached that goes into their tip pool. You are prompted to add additional tip money, but it's optional. Once you submit the order, food comes to your table really quickly. (That part was great!) Food: If you enjoyed New Fortune, this is on par with that although the selection is not as big. I'd venture a guess that about 75% of it is purchased rather than made in-house. The price is a little steep for what you're getting, but everything is more expensive now so I wasn't salty about it. Final thought: My daughter suggested that the next time we want dim sum, we should go to H-Mart, buy a variety of things, and do it ourselves at home. I think it's a pretty good idea. read more

The Food: The good thing about this place, your food comes out hot and quickly. We had a lil of everything and the taste was delicious and authentic.
