a green plate with a variety of food items

I love Chinese bakeries! Growing up in Scarborough (a suburb of Toronto) lead me to a quick discovery of this delicious magic. What more could a kid want other than sweet, golden, glazed buns - and all for about 50¢. That's economical use of allowance money, that's what that is. As an adult the nostalgia is real and I still love grabbing a tray and tongs, ready to pick out an array of savoury and sweet treats. I recently learned about Shan Shan Bakery when it was chosen in the Favourite Bakery category on the Edmonton Food Faves We Crave 2022 list. Plus it's located in Chinatown. This is all that I needed to hear! I visited on a Saturday afternoon with full intentions of having Chinese bakery as my lunch. Edmonton's Chinatown (in the McCauley neighbourhood) is a bit of a rough area, which is a shame. Especially because the food finds in this part of the city are incredible. Street parking is usually not a problem and I was able to park directly in front of the bakery. Everything about the shop was ticking all of the right boxes. Location in Chinatown? Yes. Dingy questionable storefront? Yup. Interesting cleanliness factor inside? You know it. (Although this place was better than most.) This is exactly as it should be and the only way that I'll have it. Keep your decor expectations low when entering this bakery. It's not supposed to "look like" anything. The walls are a mint green and that's good enough. All you need to worry about are the rows of cases that contain good, good buns. Yes, the plastic cases are somewhat murky to look through - this just means that they're doing it right. It should be noted that Shan Shan is a cash-only establishment, however they will also accept eTransfers if you don't have cash. The number one thing synonymous with Chinese bakeries is the tray and tong system. You'll find a stack of plastic trays and a row of tongs at the entrance of every Chinese bakery and Shan Shan is no different. You sanitize your hands (as per the sign), grab your tray, grab your tongs, and go about loading up your tray with whatever strikes your fancy! It's fun! You then bring your tray up to the cash where your bill is tallied and your treats are either boxed or bagged. I began to cruise the aisles like a shark. First I wanted to see everything, then I'd make my selections. All of the usual suspects were present; baked buns, steamed buns, breads, little pastries - all sorts of things. Eventually I had a tray full of delicious delights that I couldn't wait to dig into. I brought my tray, loaded with nine different items, up to the cash and was charged a whopping $15 for all of it. I proceeded to feed my entire family. Shan Shan does not have a seating area so you will need to be prepared for a grab-and-go situation. No problem! You can easily eat all of this in your car like I did! I began to devour the buns, taking bites of everything! This is what I selected: Green Onion Ham Bun ($1.40). It looked a bit like a cinnamon bun, except with a bright speckling of green onion and bits of ham on top. The sweet dough was light and tasted very fresh. This became a theme with all of the items at Shan Shan - these might have been some of the freshest Chinese bakery items that I've ever experienced. I liked that the green onion and ham was found within the dough, as well as on top. Very flavourful. Tuna Fish Bun ($1.40). What can I say? I'm a fan of tuna. The same delightful dough but this time with a savoury tuna salad inside. I liked that the filling wasn't dry and that there were pops of crunch from what I believe to be celery mixed in. Very good. Wiener Bun ($1.40). The holy grail! This one is a real guilty pleasure of mine and the bun that I truly crave and long for the most. Every Chinese bakery has them. I got three of them because there would be no sharing. This bun has a hot dog inside of it. And this hot dog is wrapped in a golden, sweet, pillowy bun. This version was perfect and it was everything that I dreamed for it to be. I also loved that Shan Shan's version has a bit of style to the shape of their bun. Long Donut ($1.90). I've had Chinese donut sticks before... But not like this one. Beautifully golden and crispy, this donut was not greasy at all. I loved the pastry very much because while it was simple, it embodied a subtle and glorious salty-sweet flavour. Absolutely the best Chinese donut I've ever had! I will be back for more! Fun fact: These are actually eaten as a breakfast item in China. Red Bean Sesame Ball ($1.40). I wanted to try the red bean bun but it was already sold out. However, these balls are a Chinese bakery staple, you'll always find these seedy orbs. And this one? It was the best (BEST!) one I've ever had. Ever! These pastries are soft and chewy with a red bean paste center. What set this one apart is the deliciously crispy exterior. It was perfect. Mini Winter Melon Pastry ($1.40). Loved this! Not sure if this is a special seasonal item. The pastry was light and flaky and

Chinatown's Shan Shan Bakery offers a wide variety of both Chinese and western baked goods, including cakes, cookies, tarts, and buns. I ordered a variety of treats, including a bag of egg cookies, a butter cream chocolate cake roll, two kinds of mini mooncakes (red bean and lotus paste), a fresh fruit tart, a custard egg tart, and one slice of Black Forest cake. The latter is my favourite dessert and I was incredibly curious about how Shan Shan's version would compare. It was surprising, to say the least. A light, fluffy chocolate cake with a mound of sweet cherry cream on top, garnished with a chocolate wafer and fruit. If you like your cake to cream/icing ratio weighted heavily in favour of the cream/icing, you will love this. It was definitely not a traditional Black Forest cake, but it was memorable (and delicious). On the other hand, the slice of butter cream chocolate cake roll was exactly what I expected: chocolate cake rolled with a sweet and salty buttercream. The fresh fruit tart was small but delightful, with three pieces of fruit nestled in whipped cream and a dense shell. The custard egg tart was a bit bigger, with a filling that was firm and not too sweet, and a flaky crust. I haven't had mooncakes in ages. These were small, but densely packed with their respective fillings. The red bean paste had a satisfying, subtle sweetness, while the lotus had a nutty flavour almost reminiscent of marzipan. The egg cookies - originally ordered as an afterthought - were amazing. The dollar-sized cookies were crispy, buttery, and a perfect accompaniment to my afternoon coffee. You can go to Shan Shan directly, or order via Uber Eats for delivery like I did.

Love finding these little hidden gems in 'interesting' parts of town! Thankfully lots of free street parking on the next street behind the shop, which is right on 97 Street. The bakery is fairly small but quite the variety of delicious goods on display! I had to hold back from buying one of everything on the spot They have serving trays and tongs for customers to pick what you want safely then pay in the one corner. It's kind of shaped like a donut - pastries lining the outside with an island in the middle with more goods! In the one picture of multiple goods: Right to left: coconut patty cookie things, mooncakes, coconut almond bun, melon cake thingies, rice cake thingies... (Ps - mooncakes - special occasion pastries, a little pricey, but daaammnn they good) The owner was nice and spoke English well enough to understand - I'm a little hard in understanding but it all worked out Looking forward to raidi-... I mean visiting this shop again!

Also, it gives highlight to an delicious food scene, which otherwise can be overlooked because of the area of town that Chinatown is located in. I really believe in the area, and even if it is not Chinatown Dining Week, I still go there often because the food is amazing (at numerous places on 96th street), and the families who have food establishments are really friendly, and care about they do. The staff here are friendly and care about what they do, (as all of the other locations on the street), but english is not their first language, so be patient! The women here running the bakery were fantastic, but we needed to do some charades to get what we wanted. Our fruit cocktail cake was only 20 bucks (for downtown dining week, it is slightly higher regularly), which is cheaper than many Costco cakes. It was so delicious. Light and fluffy, full of fruit and delectable whipped cream. I am not a super sweet fan, but I had three pieces of cake the first night. So lovely. They also have a tonne of other baked goods that are worth checking out. You should. Check out Chinatown. Check out the food. And check out the people that are in this resilient community.

I don't think I have had something here that I didn't think was ok to good. My issue the last time was that they add the prices in their head and didn't issue a receipt. They usually use a calculator but I don't recall if they ever give a receipt from the til. This time they didn't use and charged almost $30 for baked goods, which I think was a few dollars off. My suggestion is if you go, add up the items beforehand or ask for a receipt to ensure the price charged is what it should be.

It's the first time I went there, as we usually go somewhere else like Hotel Macdonald, and I can tell you right off the bat that the one offered by The Art of Cake is much MUCH better! Their shabby chic decor is absolutely adorable and tasteful! The tables were decently spaced and lighting warm and bright. The staff were also super sweet when chatting and checking in on us during the course of our tea party. The menu was mouthwatering. Other tea parties, while sticking to bite sized portions, also stuck with scant fillings/toppings and little variety that always left me feeling like I should go for a burger run after. The Art of Cake's was not only as generous as they can be with the fillings in the bite sized portions, they were also varied and left my palette (and stomach) leaving well satisfied. Their plating and food presentation was fantastic and pleasing to the eye. It left me feeling reluctant to bite into some of the pieces because they were too cute and perfect! Would definitely recommend, and would go again!

I didn't quite know what to expect walking in, if it was more of a takeout bakery style or a sit down and enjoy sandwich and chicken eatery? Well, we got to try it out and 100% more of a take out shop than anything else. Similar setup to Handy with breads and desserts displayed on the center glass counter display with a few shelves on the side acting as a mini market, the backboard had a few food food items but nothing special. The space is roomier with plenty of seating, but with a feeling of more of a concrete room as opposed to being more welcoming as Handy. We left with a few Portuguese tarts and they were cold? She didn't offer to warm them up or anything either, so my cold tarts were pretty disappointing. Though the filling did taste really good. Maybe we need to visit again on a busier peak time for some better service? Not in a rush to try this place again though.

Popular Bakery is many things - including living up to its name. It is a bakery, grocery store,…read moresandwich shop, cafe, and hang out, all in one. Located on Alberta Avenue, Popular Bakery fits well into the multicultural atmosphere of the area as a Portuguese bakery and restaurant. One of the few places where one can sit with a cup of coffee and enjoy conversation with friends (except when community coffeehouse The Carrot is open), Portuguese Bakery sells fresh baked goods, sandwiches made to order, and a few hot entree items such as Portuguese flame-grilled chicken and pork. A cooler contains a variety of beverages, both domestic and imported from Portugal, and there are a few short aisles of groceries, again, mostly Portuguese. Despite being large and spacious, tables are precious few. I can imagine this place getting very full at lunch time, and doing a mostly take-out business. I was there around four in the afternoon, and the tables were around half full, mostly with older Portuguese men and women sitting around enjoying coffee and pastries, speaking in their mother tongue. My server was Portuguese, and I really felt like I had stepped into another culture - which is exactly what I want when I am visiting an ethnic establishment. I ordered a quarter chicken meal with french fries (my other choice was rice) and a salad (which comes with the meal). I was asked if I wanted my food served regular or spicy and I opted for regular. My food was brought out to me a few minutes later, and consisted of a large plate almost overflowing with chicken, fries, and salad. The salad was a mix of vegetables in a light, almost Italian style vinagrette with a bit of a salty kick to it. The fries were average, but crispy. I thought perhaps they might make their own here, but I was wrong. The chicken, however, was the star of the show. Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, the meat was infused with a tangy season mix in oil, accented with salt and garlic. The grilled flavour of the chicken came through as well. Instead of giving me an entire dark or white quarter, I had a wing, a chunk of thigh, and two chunks of white meat. I enjoyed the variety, and it also made the meal easier to eat. For dessert, I decided to try one of the many tempting treats in the bakery's showcase. An egg tart is a standard Portuguese favourite of mine and they were here, but looked rather burned. Some of the other items, such as danishes, eclairs, and other pastries looked delicious, but a bit too much to follow the meal I had. I opted for what looked like a smaller dessert - a slice of caramel pudding. As soon as my server handed me the plate, I thought my arm would drop. It was heavy for such a small slice! I also had a cup of coffee to accompany my dessert and keep me occupied as I finished reading a book. The pudding reminded me of the filling of an egg tart, very firm in texture. The caramel part was probably the light syrup at the bottom of the slice, which tasted more like a lightly burned sugar than caramel. It was good, though, and it took me a while to fork my way through it. The big disappointment of the afternoon was the coffee. It was very, very average. However, it was also inexpensive. The price for a meal is in the $7-$10 range. The sandwiches are on fresh bread or rolls and include a variety of meats. There is also soup. I plan to come here again to have more chicken and try the rice. Portuguese Bakery closes daily at 6:00 p.m. and is closed on Sundays.
