Chinatown Dining Week always brings me to new places. Xing Wang Bakery is the 2026 highlight!
Since Garden Bakery ceased to be, I've been lost for a place to get good Chinese brunch featuring some english and surly/friendly but efficient old school first gen service. Makes me feel at home as an Edmontontian. I love Chinatown.
Not really a bakery, Xing Wang offers different light dishes to eat in or take out, plus a few freezers full of different buns, dumplings, turnip cake, spring rolls, lotus wraps etc. The portions are pretty generous. They'll give you a to-go container, but honestly I'd just bring my own because the staff are so busy. It can be hard to get in a word, language barrier notwithstanding.
I had the rice rolls, and they were so nice and fresh. Very QQ with sticky rounded layers versus the usual thick squid-tube like rice roll. The best I've had. Everything else was kind of standard/OK, like the ho fun, lotus wrap and won ton soup. Needed chili oil IMO. The BBQ pork buns had nice fresh dough, very springy and light, although the contents were a little sweet. The spring rolls are fat and look nice, but served a bit greasy for my taste.
If you choose to dine in, you'll get a large glass of warm tea, and soy sauce is at each table. Sometimes other items are offered, like we got 2 packs of plum sauce dropped off with the spring rolls. Order at the counter at the left, take a seat, eventually your food will find you. The tables are mostly round 4-8 tops, so expect to share your space with others. The table will eventually be bussed, but if you want to drop your plates off at the cart station next to the counter, they appreciate it.
They're open at 0900h. As a downtown worker I'd definitely get some lunch here. And it's just a little bit off the Zombietown beat, so not so bad for parking and general chicanery. Debit accepted! read more
