Met up with Dbone for lunch at one of our old stomping grounds, Sunbake Pita Bakery. Probably one of my favourite spots in town. We dropped in on a Monday (around 12:30pm) and it was busy. There's busy and then there's Sunbake busy. Seriously, the door never stops opening. Order at the counter and wait for your number to be called. The menu is up on the screens. They also have a great variety of nuts. - Corn nuts ($1.79 per 100g) - fresh, crunchy and slightly toasted. This is the spot where I first discovered my love for corn nuts. - Chicken spinach melt ($5.50) - still as good as I remember. Pitas are light, thin and fluffy but with a slight chew and crisp. - Meat pie ($3.99) - simple but with a touch of acidity. - Zatar ($2.99) - always get one of these zatar pies. Cheap and tasty. SPB is still as busy as ever. Solid pies and still so reasonable.

Located right by the sweets shop I came to try it had the word bakery so I knew I had to go in for a look! As mentioned with my sweets shop next door parking is stressful as it's really tight but there is parking right infront of the stores. Lots of pita! And another kind of flat bread I couldn't tell you the name of (kind of like a crepe? Is that the tannour?). Looks like they serve food but I didn't get anything this time. They also had a ?nut bar, hot food to go in a hurry, and baklava from Paradiso Not the baklava from the sweets shop 2 doors down interestingly. They had some cool drinks and cheese for sale too. The pita was Delicious. A full 30cm in diameter they were huge. So soft, fresh, and delicious. I used for a Cesar salad wrap at home, taco burrito, and egg salad sandwich for the week The Tannour was 32cm - even larger. Tasted like a crepe. I smothered it in peanut butter and jam at home and rolled it - it was delicious but quite chewy and my jaw hurt by the end. Better for homemade butter chicken and stews. These freeze well but thaw better when left to room temperature naturally and not microwaved. Both the pita and the tannour for just $7!!! I would love to pick up a Smorg of Indian food and use these!

I love when I have the opportunity to try something completely new that I've never tasted before. I seek out this experience as much as possible! Up until recently I had never heard of manakeesh, a Middle Eastern flatbread that is served quite a lot like a pizza. The place to try it in Edmonton? Sunbake Pita Bakery in Rosslyn. CBC Edmonton's Best Restaurants 2019 named the bakery as one of the Best Restaurants North of the Core. I looked forward to venturing to the north side to taste something new! The bakery itself is a very casual establishment located in a strip mall. I was quite pleased to see that every single business in the strip mall was a Middle Eastern shop or restaurant - a very good sign that this is the right place for the most authentic cuisine offerings. The store is large and unmistakable with its bright yellow and red signage. Inside you'll mainly find a counter to order from and you'll likely be dazzled (like I was) by the extensive nut bar to the left of the room. The space is clean and neatly organized with bright green walls. I visited the beverage cooler to the right of the the counter first, always interested in finding imported beverages. With a wide array of choices, I settled on a Vimto, a drink that I have enjoyed in the past. I like this carbonated beverage because it tastes like fruit punch except fizzy. What's not to like? It's super popular in Middle Eastern countries and therefore is a perfect match for the food that I was about to consume. The menu is presented on screens and I wanted to do my best to order a good sampling of their food. The main thing at Sunbake Pita is the tannour pita bread. Sunbake Pita can produce 3,000 loaves per hour and they claim to be the only bakery in North America capable of doing so. Using this specific type of flatbread they make manakeesh, which is certainly the main thing on their menu. This popular item consists of tannour pita topped with various combinations of meats, cheese, veggies and spices. (Of which Sunbake only uses Halal meat and fresh vegetables.) It can be sliced or folded. It's similar to a pizza but with a different type of bread and without sauce. The main one that I was excited to try was the Zaatar Cheese Manakeesh ($5.25) because I'd heard that it's one of their best ones. Upon ordering, the man at the counter (who was very helpful) asked if I would like my manakeesh sliced (like a pizza) or folded in half. I inquired which was the best way to eat it and he recommended folding it - no arguing with that! Served piping hot straight from the oven, this pita situation was incredibly oily because of the cheese - but in the best possible way. The soft, fresh dough was crisped in an oven, creating the perfect combination of chewiness and crunch. Inside was a simple yet delightful combination of melty and somewhat caramelized cheese (which I'm pretty sure was just a marble cheddar) and za'atar spice. This spice mixture is typically made up of dried thyme, oregano, marjoram, toasted sesame seeds and salt. Incredibly fragrant and flavourful, I loved the zingy kick from the spices and detected something almost citrus-acidic about the combination. The spice is quite dense, more or less made into a paste, which really stands up to the cheese and pita, never allowing any of the flavour to be lost. I found this to be an incredibly special item unlike anything that I've ever tasted before. Apparently this particular combination is typically eaten for breakfast and I can see it being an amazing way to begin the day. The menu consists of different categories of manakeesh; meat, veggie, ultimate, and chicken. I figured that ordering something from the meat section would help to round out my experience. So I chose the Meat Pie Manakeesh ($3.99), which sounded like their most straight-up meat version. Again, I had it folded in half as per the recommendation. I have absolutely no idea what kind of meat is used. Possibly lamb? The pita itself was just as perfectly baked as the previous one however this one contained a very flavourful mixture of meaty goodness. It tasted almost sausage-like and was well seasoned. This manakeesh was heavier and bolder. I enjoyed it as something that could serve as more of a meal. I was surprised to find a Chicken Shawarma Wrap ($8.50 for regular) on the menu. Chicken shawarma is widely available in southern Ontario, however is less so in the west. Especially in Edmonton where the donair reigns supreme, you don't come across chicken shawarma all that often. So to find it on this menu was very exciting for me and I had to try it. Upon ordering, I was not asked which toppings I wanted (which is typical practice in most shawarma shops). Nope, Sunbake Pita was going to make this shawarma their way - and I were going to like it. Made with the same delicious tannour pita, I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. I personally loved that I wasn't given any choice in the toppings because I honestly prefer when so

The outside, very interesting strip mall!

I long for places like this!! The mom and pop shop with regulars. You don't stumble on places like these. I'm probably one on the few lucky one, or one that explore Yelp! ;) Don't expect the best service out there but I guess it's part of the charm! Most of the menus is pie (pizza) of different kind. Don't expect to find the pepperoni deep dish in there. Only good and fresh ingredients on a home made pita. They have quite a few pie and I'll definitely go back to try them all!!

My love for Sunbake Pita is near and dear to my heart. I started coming here when my university friend introduced me to their spinach pies. I instantly fell in love. The spices mixed with the spinach and the cheese just takes me to flavor town every time. They are consistent, and all in all, just delicious! The cheese pull game is also very strong. So if you love cheese just as much as I do, it's definantly worth a try. They are totally something worth craving over. I personally haven't tried any of the meat options, but will do one day. They also make freshly baked pitas every day, so while you're there, might as well grab a bag too! My friend always grabs 10 bags every time we go. The staff is very friendly and the location is very clean. I love Sunbake Pita!

Delicious and affordable Lebanese food. A vegan friend introduced me to their spinach fatayers (little baked pastry pie things) and they are just to die for - everything else I've tried here is great too, but I'll often just pick up a container of the spinach fatayers to take home, it's a super convenient side to serve with almost anything, or take to game nights (back before pandemic times). The staff are friendly and prompt, and they seem to have been taking good care during the pandemic whenever I've stopped by. Definitely worth stopping by and grabbing a pack of fatayers - there are plenty of other options too if spinach is not your thing, but I definitely recommend trying the spinach anyway!

Being in from out of town, we had no idea what to check out for lunch. We randomly found Sunbake Pita, and we are so glad we did. We walked in and the place was very busy both buying food and pitas. It looks like they really sell quite a few pitas as people were buying them constantly while we were there. The menu was presented above the service line with nice pictures showing what you were getting. We decided to go with a chicken schwarma wrap, meat and cheese pita, and a chicken and spinach pita. When ordering, we asked if the offered any sides with the pita and we're told they do not. We went and grabbed a seat by the window. They do not have many seats to eat inside, but do have a few. We checked out the mixed nuts while waiting on our food as well. The food arrived quickly and looked great. All of the pitas were very tasty. While we were eating, I was tapped on the shoulder and handed a couple plates of tabouli salad. I think it may have been the owner, but he explained they supply the salad, but don't normally sell it. He gave us the plates and told us to enjoy. It was the best tabouli salad I have ever had. Not overly green with parsley and it had a nice tartness from the lemon juice. Our lunch was very fulfilling. After finishing our meal, we chatted about how reasonable the meals cost was. My coworker got both the meat and cheese pita, a coke, and a chicken and spinach pita for $9. My schwarma was about $9 as well. It may have been the cheapest meal we had in Edmonton. After you are done eating there, don't forget to check out the Lebanese bakery a few doors down. All the pastries were enjoyed by the guys at the shop.

I've been a returning customer of this place for almost 2 decades! I come here whenever I have a craving for chicken shawarma...I don't know how they do it, but they always keep improving it for the better; from the packaging, to the sauce, etc. This time the new thing was that the pita wrap had a little bit of savoury rub on it & it was so good. The portion is huge. I can usually eat 1 shawarma for 2 small meals & be satisfied. The staff are pleasant & organized. There is a lot of standing room for takeout orders, but they do have barstool seating along the counters at the storefront. I like how they've redone the interior in recent years, makes it look updated & the food more appealing. The pita pies are massive & delicious, but personally I'd avoid the cheese pie. It's basically melted cheese on a pita. Whenever I'm there I'm also tempted to grab bags of their premade baked goods, the savoury ones make great instant snacks!

Also, it gives highlight to an delicious food scene, which otherwise can be overlooked because of the area of town that Chinatown is located in. I really believe in the area, and even if it is not Chinatown Dining Week, I still go there often because the food is amazing (at numerous places on 96th street), and the families who have food establishments are really friendly, and care about they do. The staff here are friendly and care about what they do, (as all of the other locations on the street), but english is not their first language, so be patient! The women here running the bakery were fantastic, but we needed to do some charades to get what we wanted. Our fruit cocktail cake was only 20 bucks (for downtown dining week, it is slightly higher regularly), which is cheaper than many Costco cakes. It was so delicious. Light and fluffy, full of fruit and delectable whipped cream. I am not a super sweet fan, but I had three pieces of cake the first night. So lovely. They also have a tonne of other baked goods that are worth checking out. You should. Check out Chinatown. Check out the food. And check out the people that are in this resilient community.

I don't think I have had something here that I didn't think was ok to good. My issue the last time was that they add the prices in their head and didn't issue a receipt. They usually use a calculator but I don't recall if they ever give a receipt from the til. This time they didn't use and charged almost $30 for baked goods, which I think was a few dollars off. My suggestion is if you go, add up the items beforehand or ask for a receipt to ensure the price charged is what it should be.

Located on Alberta Avenue, Popular Bakery fits well into the multicultural atmosphere of the area as a Portuguese bakery and restaurant. One of the few places where one can sit with a cup of coffee and enjoy conversation with friends (except when community coffeehouse The Carrot is open), Portuguese Bakery sells fresh baked goods, sandwiches made to order, and a few hot entree items such as Portuguese flame-grilled chicken and pork. A cooler contains a variety of beverages, both domestic and imported from Portugal, and there are a few short aisles of groceries, again, mostly Portuguese. Despite being large and spacious, tables are precious few. I can imagine this place getting very full at lunch time, and doing a mostly take-out business. I was there around four in the afternoon, and the tables were around half full, mostly with older Portuguese men and women sitting around enjoying coffee and pastries, speaking in their mother tongue. My server was Portuguese, and I really felt like I had stepped into another culture - which is exactly what I want when I am visiting an ethnic establishment. I ordered a quarter chicken meal with french fries (my other choice was rice) and a salad (which comes with the meal). I was asked if I wanted my food served regular or spicy and I opted for regular. My food was brought out to me a few minutes later, and consisted of a large plate almost overflowing with chicken, fries, and salad. The salad was a mix of vegetables in a light, almost Italian style vinagrette with a bit of a salty kick to it. The fries were average, but crispy. I thought perhaps they might make their own here, but I was wrong. The chicken, however, was the star of the show. Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, the meat was infused with a tangy season mix in oil, accented with salt and garlic. The grilled flavour of the chicken came through as well. Instead of giving me an entire dark or white quarter, I had a wing, a chunk of thigh, and two chunks of white meat. I enjoyed the variety, and it also made the meal easier to eat. For dessert, I decided to try one of the many tempting treats in the bakery's showcase. An egg tart is a standard Portuguese favourite of mine and they were here, but looked rather burned. Some of the other items, such as danishes, eclairs, and other pastries looked delicious, but a bit too much to follow the meal I had. I opted for what looked like a smaller dessert - a slice of caramel pudding. As soon as my server handed me the plate, I thought my arm would drop. It was heavy for such a small slice! I also had a cup of coffee to accompany my dessert and keep me occupied as I finished reading a book. The pudding reminded me of the filling of an egg tart, very firm in texture. The caramel part was probably the light syrup at the bottom of the slice, which tasted more like a lightly burned sugar than caramel. It was good, though, and it took me a while to fork my way through it. The big disappointment of the afternoon was the coffee. It was very, very average. However, it was also inexpensive. The price for a meal is in the $7-$10 range. The sandwiches are on fresh bread or rolls and include a variety of meats. There is also soup. I plan to come here again to have more chicken and try the rice. Portuguese Bakery closes daily at 6:00 p.m. and is closed on Sundays.
