So I love this place, but I spend too much money here! If you are looking for old world food products or hard to find ingrediants this is the place for you. The produce is amazing. Super fresh and often they have unique things that you can't find anywhere else. The meat and cheese selection is phenominal. And often they have samples which I find fun :) Best staff. Friendly and will help you find what you need and refer you if they don't have it. They don't have just Italian things, they have many other things from Europe including Romania, Serbia, Poland, and Ukrainain. But we stopped to have pizzas today (okay I may of have picked up a few things) but I wanted to try these. Even though there was only two of us, we decided on three pizzas. Pizza makes good leftovers - Classic Margherita (cheese and fresh basil) , Massimo (mozza, sausage, and capicollo), and the feature pizza of the month inverno pizza - zucchini, mushrooms, smoked beef, mozza, and gruyere cheese. The place is a cafe so not much for atmosphere. However, a great place to grab lunch if you are already shopping. Friendly staff but the pizzas took quite a while to get to our table. I am going to say half and hour. Pizza were excellent. Amazing chewy crust. A great mix of cheese to topping ratio, and really for me, I only ate half of mine. Hubby ate everything but one piece. I liked them all but the pizza of the month with the mushrooms and smoked beef was the best. If pizzas aren't your thing, they also have sandwiches and soup. Definately worth checking out.

Institution of institutions, the Italian Centre has been around since 1959. That's 63 years. Opened by Italian immigrant Frank Spinelli, the roots of this store couldn't be more authentic. The original shop is located in Edmonton's Little Italy (in the McCauley neighbourhood) and there are now a total of four stores in and around Edmonton and one in Calgary. "My store" is the southside one because it's only a few blocks away from my house and I frequent the shop often! When EDify Magazine named the Italian Centre for having the Best Sandwich 2022 no one was surprised. Edmontonians have known this for many years. It's a classic and everyone knows about it. The Italian Centre Shop is mostly a specialty grocery store that focuses on Italian and European ingredients. It's a wonderful store and you are always met with a strong sense of community during each visit. Attached to each store is a Spinelli Bar Italia, named in honour of the store's founder. This cafe was the first place to ever serve lattes and cappuccinos in Edmonton. These restaurant areas of each store location serve coffee, pastries, and light fare. It's a really lovely way to round out the entire experience and to make the shop more than just a "grocery store." I decided to visit the original Little Italy location (for the first time!) on a Sunday afternoon and was prepared to take in all of the sights and sounds. I was also curious to compare the OG store to the southside one, which I'm much more familiar with. It was immediately apparent to me that the Little Italy shop is a type of mecca. It's the mothership. The store itself is larger than the southside one and the buzz is palpable. Packed with the same incredible products and ingredients, the impressive deli, cheese, and bakery departments were firing on all cylinders. So the sandwich. THEE SANDWICH. You will find it within the grocery store, wrapped in brown paper, in one of the coolers. Once you learn the location of the sandwiches in each individual store, you will always find it in the same place. There are three types available; mild, hot, and vegetarian. (In my opinion, "hot" is the only acceptable choice, but to each their own.) They don't sell this sandwich in the cafe. I'm not sure why they don't, but they don't. You have to grab one, pre-made and wrapped, from the cooler and then you can either take it home or take it to the cafe to sit down and eat it. You can pay for it in the cafe though. Once I secured my sandwich, I went into Spinelli Bar Italia to order other items so that I could make a whole meal out of it. The staff is friendly and helpful, quickly gathering all of the requested food. The cafe has a nice feeling to it, bustling with energy. There are old photographs on the walls which add a nice touch. In addition to the indoor seating, each cafe also has an outdoor patio area that I especially enjoy. It reminds me of Italy, sitting outside on a terrazza, sipping cappuccino. (But only before 11am.) I picked up my order and found a table. I will say that the outdoor patio area of the Little Italy location was quite noisy, mainly because of the "colourful" people hanging around the storefront. The southside location is more peaceful and laidback. It also seems a bit more put together, in general. For those reasons I favour it. A coffee is a must. Italian Centre offers a really delicious crema caffe in the summer months and I had to get my hands on one before they're off the menu for the winter. There are three types to choose from and I went for the classic Crema Caffe Original ($3.00) made with Kimbo crema. What a delight!!! This little 4oz glass is filled with a creamy and refreshing dream! It's sort of like an iced cappuccino, except actually done properly. Cool and smooth, it tastes like a high-quality coffee and feels like an ideal treat for a hot summer's day. Highly recommend trying this before it gets too cold out! Next, lets get straight down to business with THE SANDWICH. Spinelli's Original Hot Panino Sandwich (Layers of Italian-style deli meats, provolone, Gloria spread, olive oil and dried oregano - $10.00), to be exact. This is it. The famous sandwich that serves as an old stand-by to many an Edmontonian. You can unwrap it and eat it as-is, or you can take it home and pop it in the oven for a few minutes to get the cheese all melty. Either way makes for a good time. The Italian bread is soft yet crusty, the perfect hug for the sandwich's contents. The array of delicious meats within are generously piled and your tastebuds will definitely meet like likes of spicy salami and mortadella. The cheese is mild and sprinkled with herbs. And the Gloria spread (which has slightly mystified me for years - is this a product in a jar that can be purchased??) is made up of a tasty mix of red pepper and eggplant. I think that everything has been said already about the amazing Italian Centre. Today let me write about their pizzas! During these months, we have ordered so many of these delicious pizzas! Like many, we were not ready to take risks, but we allowed ourselves to drive to the Italian center, get in, order a pizza, wait outside for it, go back in and take the pizza home to enjoy a movie.. well, not every time we were able to do that. A couple of times, my husband and I went back to the car and while still in the parking lot we enjoyed our pizza! It was like a date night in the middle of the pandemic! We have tried Calabrese, Margherita, Calabrese, Diavola, Prosciutto, Roma, Marinara, and more, they are always delicious, with perfect ingredients, the dough is perfectly cooked and the cheese una delicia!

Took a chance in their $12 fruit cake. Mistake. It's not very good.

This probably isn't really necessary, because everyone loves it - but we come here for great prices on produce (seriously) and for evening coffees, and maybe a pizza dinner in the cafe. The people working there are awesome and friendly - we have gotten to know some and it's always fun to chat them up. We have The Great Debate pizza, which has Tomato sauce, mozzarella, rosemary ham, double-smoked bacon & pineapple drizzled with hot honey. Dessert can be the cake below (can't remember the name but it's 100% chocolate and SO rich you need to start with a "wafer thin slice" because you won't believe it. read more

It is official, I have now visited all the Italian Centers in the greater Edmonton area (including Sherwood Park). All of their locations stand out for their excellent product selection, service and quality. The stores are very clean and well organized. There are almost too many products for the amount of shelve space. Much like shopping at Costco, you really need to come here with a shopping list as it is easy to spend a lot of money quickly. This review is for the downtown Edmonton location. The downtown Edmonton location in Little Italy (McCauley) is a beacon of light in an otherwise very poor neighborhood. Given this, I did not feel unsafe during my time here. The parking was somewhat limited, but the site was serviced by a major Edmonton Transit bus route. During my visit I stopped by the buns and deli. It took all of my willpower not to see the bakery. At the deli, I didn't have to wait very long for service and the store had most of what I was looking for. The staff helping me was knowledgeable about the many products carried, and was pleased to give me samples before I ordered larger amounts of meat and cheese. It would have been nicer if they had some sharper provolone like they did at most of the other locations, but I am happy with the emmenthaler. On the way out there were a few check outs available, and before long I was out the door. One more thing, if you haven't tried the Italian Center's panino, put it on you bucket list. They are incredible. They come in hot and mild and are available at each location. A visit to any location of the Italian Center is always a special treat, something I always look forward to. You should try them out too! read more

We always go here for their spicy sub sandwiches although to me it's not hot at all but still delicious. The different selection of pastries and sweets are amazing. Large variety of different kinds of pasta. Service is amazing and love the ambiance of each of there store locations. Can't wait too see the new building on 97 street. A great place to pick up whatever you need for that special Sunday family meal. read more

Absolutely in love with this place! You can always find all sorts of goodys to try! We love picking up a pack of locally made corn tortillas from here as well as trying different pastas, sauces and cheeses! They have a great selections and it's often quiet which is nice as it's a small place! The cafe attached is also really good, every time I've gone in there a group of older Italian men chatting away! I'd say that's good evidence it's a good place! read more

Always fun visiting the Italian Centre! I love the selection of deli meats and cheeses. It's just amazing how knowledgeable and friendly the staff are. The fact that you can sample anything is a huge plus for me! Haha For your charcuterie boards to everyday groceries, this is your place! It's the only place I go for my prosciutto needs! LOL read more

I love the Italian Shop! They have the best most fresh cheese and a great variety. Their deli meats are also top notch! Can get any better mortadella anywhere else! I also buy their canned tomato's from Italy, pasta; it's all great. If you haven't been, check them out! They also have a bakery and cafe. Highly recommend! read more

All locations deserve five stars. When COVID hit, we started looking for fun, new ideas for date night at home. We have fallen in love with Charcuterie Boards. Staff is so helpful and guide us. Offering new ideas and foods to add to our boards. Love the number system at the counter - helps with efficiency. The store itself is always well stocked and clean. Lots of great products and items! read more

New Italian Centre Shop in Sherwood Park, beautiful store, big and I found nice people around. But, I left disappointed with the amount of non-prices on many products that I would have liked to purchase. The girls in the cash machines area very helpful, but I noticed that the one who seems to be their supervisor pretty rude with them, not at all friendly this supervisor. Too much flaw in the payment system. I imagine it is the beginning of the service but it should have been more efficient. I appreciate the help of these girls. Thank you Girls for your effort, I hope you are treated in a better way. read more

I love the Italian Center. It's an absolute bonus to our city. The staff are super friendly, incredible people and the collection of cool food products and flour shipped in from Italy is outstanding! My absolute favourite thing is the submarine sandwiches. They offer a spicy version and a mild version and they are to die for. And the price is totally excellent. read more

This place is amazing. It's like going to Italy. Love their fresh breads. And the cheeses, wow! Want salami? Huge selection. Olives too. They have a full selection of fruit and vegetables. You can get sub sandwiches to go, though they are a bit pricy. Lots of Italian biscuits. Always busy. read more

I love the eclectic finds of Italian and other European foods. I love their takeout pizzas, the baking.... all the olive oils and balsamic vinegars. The deli is amazing.... I always get salami Lala prosciutto and Serrano ham. For a treat I buy the iberico ham. Love this place, I'm there every week!! read more

I love this place. Always have since I moved to Edmonton. In fact at one point I thought about applying here. But thats beside the point, first the deli is amazing! The prices and selection are great. That is through out the store, it kills the major chains. Also the local section has many great items to chose from and support our province. I honestly don't know what more to say about a grocery store but it is local, friendly, great prices and selections and well worth a visit!! read more

If you ever want to have an intimate experience with Italian grocery shopping, bakery and eating Italian food, this is the place to go with reasonable prices without breaking your bank. I usually come here for the lunch specials and their bakery while people watch in the restaurant section. The soups were amazing with affordable prices around $6-7 and the sandwiches were roughly around the same price. If you get soup and sandwich combo it would range from $10-12. Their pizzas are amazing and fresh from the oven. I thought they were slices but it was a whole pizza about $17 each. read more

Does it get better than this? No, likely not in Edmonton at least. Have you had their version of a panini? Avjar (spelling is probably wrong though I have it in my fridge right now!) sauce is the secret weapon and their shelves are stocked with more than a dozen varieties. From locally made Sorbetto to the best selection of deli style cured meats to cheeses, no one does it better in Edmonton. And don't be shy to ask for a sample of one of the deli items before you commit to buying. They do awesome catering including their killer sandwiches or can provide all the ingredients for you to make up yourself. And if you like sweet treats, you won't find any better or freshed baked goods... Mmm... The tiramisu and canolis are calling my name! My kids love to pick out a special pop - so many imports and actually pretty decents prices, too! The staff are always friendly and available to recommend which olive oil to purchase from $5 to $50! Phenomenal bread, an attached little cafe with pizza and desserts to die for... There is no better one stop specialty shop around! This place is in Edmonton staple you have to come here to appreciate it. Come here for over my Italian meats and cheeses as well as some great imported cookies and canned goods. My absolute favorite is the hot or mild Italian sandwiches that the pre-make you can pop in and pick them up to go anytime! I prove the hot one of his it has a spicy roasted red pepper sauce on it. The deli is amazing for prosciutto for Capicola mozzarella and provolone and my personal favorite the Genoa salami. The olives and other pickled peppers and artichokes hearts in oil are also amazing here. They also have a great selection of imported European chocolates and pastas. I'm doing my grocery shopping I always make sure I fill up my basket. read more

Just love going here...the products, the lattes, the good parking, the whole experience. We buy the buns, specialty meats and cheeses, chocolate, a variety of pastas, big bags of almonds, specialty pesto....many, many things. Start with a latte at the connected cafe. Lots of pastries and yummy things to eat there too. I like to walk with my coffee and take my time. One of my favorite things is ordering pancetta and getting it sliced to my liking, it feels decadent to me. This is a company that boasts a well-trained, customer service oriented staff too. People are efficient, present and know what they're doing. read more

This is a great shop for uEuropean brands. They south and west locations have great bakeries and this is your best choice for purchasing pastas, deli meats and cheese. Carry brands like Unico, la pavoncella and too many brands of dried pasta to list. Great staff and great shopping read more

An organization I am with held its AGM recently. We ordered party platters from the Italian Centre to serve our guests. The prices were competitive with other groceries offering similar platters. The quality was excellent - the plates were filled with the Italian Centre's delicious meat, cheese, veggies, and fresh fruit. The platters were so huge that everyone got to take some food home with them. We were also able to pick up other items like olives, pickles, coffee, and fresh, delicious buns. I always knew the Italian Centre sold very high quality meat, but did not know about the party platters until recently. If you are planning on entertaining this holiday season and want to really impress your guests, consider getting some platters here. read more

Cant say enough positive things about the Italian centre. Been to many of their locations, all their staff is great, and being one that really enjoys good European food more then American food I love stocking up on the essentials. Not only that but they also have great selection of chocolates which I always end up getting too many. Prost! read more

The Italian Centre Shop first opened in Edmonton in Little Italy to provide people with a taste of home-grown Italian favourites. Over 50 years later, we are still providing Edmontonians with specialty European imports from over 15 Countries. Our deli has over 200 cheeses and 100 deli meats, as well as olives, seafood, and much more. Walk through our aisles to find your favourite old country chocolates, biscuits, spreads, olive oils, balsamic vinegars, a wide selection of gluten free products, canned and fresh tomatoes, a spectacular variety of produce....and much more. Each morning our Southside bakery makes fresh rustic breads that your family will be sure to love. The Italian Centre Shop has always been a gathering place and now with Spinelli's Bar Italia, you can enjoy an authentic espresso or cappuccino in-store before or after you shop. Stop in at either location for a cultural experience, unique in our very cultural city.

History

Established in 1964.

In 1959, after years of working odd jobs and ever the entrepreneur, Frank and friend Remiro Zalunardo combined their resources to buy a tiny store on the corner of 95th Street and 108th Avenue, selling mainly Italian magazines, pop, and chocolate until a sudden surge in the local Italian population found them besieged with requests for all kinds of home-grown Italian favorites. It was during this period Frank led a vigorous lobby to legalize homemade wine. Frank and company convinced the provincial government to remove its restriction on home brewing. The law was changed in 1964, the same year Frank assumed full ownership of the Italian Centre Shop. He would soon become the biggest supplier of Italian grapes (40,000 cases in some years) and wine making equipment in the community. Today, daughter Teresa runs the family business, recently expanding to include an upscale new location just South of 51 Avenue on 104-A Street.

Meet the Business Owner: Teresa S.

Following in her parent's footsteps, Teresa is an active and involved owner/operator. Teresa graduated from the University of Alberta with a BA, Psychology in 1983. She has worked every type of job at the Italian Centre Shop since she was able, from cashier and shelf stocker to administrative office work. In 2000 she took over the presidency of the company and in 2003 opened a 2nd location in South Edmonton (5028-104A Street). She is an active Member of Santa Maria Goretti Church, Italian Chamber of Commerce, & the McCauley Community League. She was a founding member of the Avenue of Nations Business Revitalization Zone and key organizer of $800,000 renovation of Giovanni Caboto Park, "providing a safe and vibrant park for the kids who are the heart and soul of our community." Teresa is a recipient of the Queen's Jubilee Medal, Global's Woman of Vision, and the Alberta Centennial Medal. Since 2005, Teresa has been named one of Canada's Top 100 Women Entrepreneurs by Profit Magazine.

My husband and I were surprised how large the calzones were! They were the size of large individual pizzas! To be honest I was expecting them to be the size of pizza pockets or empanadas. They were large enough for my husband and I to share one calzone! They were baked fresh. Crispy crust and gooey cheese. The seasoning was just right. The calzones were generously packed with ingredients. I was impressed! The milkshakes were thick but I was able to drink with a straw. I had a strawberry milkshake while my husband chose cappuccino flavour. The service was friendly and warm. I had to wait a bit but it was definitely worth the wait! The calzones were freshly baked! There was friendly banter with the staff and customers. Nice welcoming vibe here. The ambience is of a local diner. A nice place to meet up with friends and family to grab a bite. There were a lot of tables and seating available. I wouldn't have known about this place without the IG giveaway but honestly I would love to come back. They have an extensive menu. I would love to try the other menu items. I recommend!

Love both locations, it's the greatest grocery store we've ever discovered. Love the deli selection. The staff is always so helpful, and the product tastes so much better than at the large chain stores ... and is often at a better price here. Even when you have to pay a bit more, the quality is worth it. Love the selection of local products, and the great prices on produce. The tiramisu cups from the bakery are so yummy. I hate to have to buy tomato sauce anywhere else now, their selection of sauces and strained tomatoes is so vast, and love the varieties of noodle shapes ... and their italian sausage is beyond great ... I only wish they had a full butcher counter ... and sometimes the wait at the deli is crazy long. I've waited up to 45 minutes! If I have the time, it's worth it though ... just frustrating on a busy day when there's only 2-3 people to help serve 30+ customers (some customers take up to 10 minutes to make their selections). read more

This is a nice little spot to go for Italian in the community. I really like Teresa the owner. She is really nice and even gave me a complimentary appetizer cause my friend wasnt completely happy with her service. But in all fairness the service was kinda bad. Our food came pretty late and we were really hungry so it seemed like forever. The food was really good though and I will definitely be back. I read more

it's a nice place to get European foods, selection of cheese is best in the City. Best I like about this place is their coffee and pastry, it is different choice then what you would get in Tim's cost more but once on a while you can treat yourself with good cup of coffee and nice Italian sweets. read more

Love this place! every time we go there there is always something new to try. Fresh food and you can't buy those things in big name stores. I really like their selections of cheeses and olive oil. Check them out you will not be disappointed. read more
