Yummmity yumm. We've been back two times for lunch. We had sandwichs, pot pies (beef was my fav), soup and cup cakes (my new fav choco cup cake, Kara's cupcakes from SF just got dethroned), coffee (they make better boxcar coffee than boxcar) .. oh and cheese cake. A few years back I had ordered the Christmas bûche de Noel at Shamane's. It was such a delight that even those among us who avoid sweets and lots of butter couldn't stop from having more, until it was all gone. I thought of delighting family and guests once more with Shamane's bûche. First, to my surprise, they seemed to have only one option, a chocolate glaze. (We avoid chocolate at night due to sleep issues). But not wanting to disappoint or change gear, so to speak, I went ahead and ordered it. We cut into it and though no one said a word, or asked for seconds, I knew that it was sub-par, to say the least. It was a plain Black Forest type of cake, with a few minuscule cherries at the bottom, plain whipping cream and plain chocolate genoise. It was no different and no better than what I could have, and have in the past, made at home for lesser occasions. And yet the price of this sub-par product was 80 dollars Plus!!! To say I was disappointed is overstating it. My advice, why sully a stellar reputation by making something that you are not equipped to deliver? read more

I just went to Shamane's for the first time, and I don't know if this is the norm, but I waited roughly 20 mins to even get served this morning. When I did finally get to order they didn't even have something as simple as a black coffee ready to order! As a coffee shop/bakery this seems utterly ridiculous. They didn't do anything to rectify that situation either, and made me pay for the more expensive coffee they did have ready! Have to say the pastries look pretty good, even though they cost like 5 dollars each. Wouldn't recommend this place if you are just trying to grab a quick bite and go. Disappointed & Unprofessional Weeks ago we scheduled a wedding cake tasting at Shamanes & agreed on flavors and a time to meet. We drove a full hour up from Denver and arrived at 5:25, 5 minutes prior to our set time. Shamane briefly greeted us & sat us down at a table then disappeared into the kitchen. We waited a full 30 minutes by ourselves without hearing anything from Shamane or other staff. As 6:00 approached, we were both frustrated and did not feel like we could trust this level of service for something as important as our wedding cake and left. I cannot say how the cake is, but we certainly did not feel confident hiring this company or trusting that product could be delivered or guaranteed. One of the best cakes I've ever had! We sampled a few different bakeries for our wedding cake, and Shamane's taste and quality didn't compare to any others. They were far superior to any bakery. My wife and I loved sampling their flavors and had a hard time deciding which one tasted best. They were very flexible in working with us in having samples ready for pickup and delivering the final product to our venue. In the mornings, I would look in the "day old" basket to see what items were discounted to $1 and buy all of them if possible :). Some days, there would be chocolate croissants and other times it would be a muffin or chocolate chip cookie. Everything always tasted great. If you want something not sweet for breakfast, they offer huge yummy quiches or breakfast burritos too. For lunch, I highly recommend their pot pies. I had their chicken pot pie today which is very savory, and the crust is so flaky and buttery. If it's the right season, they offer LOBSTER pot pie which is superb. I simply give her some pictures off of Google of designs that I like and give her creative liberty to come up with something similar. Her design ALWAYS exceed our hopes. Sometimes, communication was a bit challenging because it's a pretty small operation (emails often take a day or two for responses), but be patient. This was the best cake we have ever had. Ordered from Shamane blindly as we live in NYC and needed a cake for a rehearsal dinner in Colorado. Shamane called me personally, advised me on the cake, sent me a picture to see it before it was finished to make sure I was happy, and never tried to hit me with with additional costs as I asked her to do more. Shamane made my wedding cakes (a trio of cakes as my honey and I each got to choose which ones we liked best, and the third was for his dad as we got married on his dad's birthday). She had ultimate patience and positivity for us during our cake tasting - which was amazing of her! This is star #1. Shamane's history is pretty cool - serving gourmet meals in France on hot air balloons - wow! Definitely star #2!! Her ability to please our pickiness in relation to dietary restrictions was a HUGE plus. Gluten free? Yes indeed!! Though I personally ended up choosing an almond sponge cake made with wheat flour for my wedding cake, and let my gluten-sensitive husband get his own candied orange-dark chocolate-cheesecake. These were both great. The wheat-free option for the sponge cake was just not spongey enough for me, so I opted to get the better-tasting cake, even though my hubby wouldn't be able to enjoy it. That being said, it's great that she has the option for those who are gluten-sensitive. I'll give a half-star for that one - so now we're at 2.5. Next.... hellooo!!! Can you say local, seasonal fruits and veggies? The quiche and pies with yummy seasonal goodness really float my boat. Definitely a full star!! Up to 3.5! Now, the sad part.... for some reason the cake choices that my honey and I made didn't translate to Shamane... so on my wedding day, as I bit down into my almond sponge cake with champagne soaked strawberries, I was pretty disappointed when no almond flavor entered my subtle love-drenched taste palette. :( Bummer. She'd written it down wrong, and when my husband went over things with her and she said "Your wife wanted plain, right?" he didn't know to correct her. Forward to the wedding day.... I announce the flavors of the cakes to the crowd..... and then am a little confused that this cake I'm tasting tastes very different than the one I remember choosing! We were very thrifty for our wedding as well (budgeted under $5000!), and the cake was a big splurge for us. So.... sad face. :( Minus one star!! Down to 2.5. Next sad part.... we ordered two chocolate cheesecakes, one with candied ginger and one with candied oranges. We literally could not tell the difference between the cakes! I swear that they were the same. We definitely asked many people in the crowd - it became a trendy question amongst the group. "Which cheesecake did you like?" "I don't know... which one was which?" Ah.... we ended up thinking that Shamane made a mistake and made two of one kind. She swore later that this was not the case, that she candied both the oranges and the ginger herself, and that they just taste very similar. Well... I gotta hand it to her, candying those things just for us... but we really couldn't tell the difference... perhaps this makes us appear to be less-than-taste-sensitive, but it was still a real bummer. Down to 1.5 Shamane! However... I'll add in another half star for her credit in handling the situation. At first, she did not want to offer us anything for our troubles, saying that she stood by her product and that our complaints were unfounded. Later she had a change of heart, and offered us $50 back for our troubles. This was a negligible amount of $$, however, it was the thought that counted for us. I was truly bummed by her semi-hostile attitude when we expressed our disappointment. We literally thought that she'd made a mistake and given us two ginger cheesecakes, and I fully remembered asking for the almond sponge cake (it took a while for us to figure out that the mix-up must've happened on the phone about that one). So, when she bawked and said that her products were awesome and that we should shut-the-f-up, basically, I was heart broken. Shamane! I had so much faith in you!! How could you do that?? But.... as I said, she had a change of heart, and while the $$ back that she sent us was nominal, it did soften the blow of our disappointment with her services. I'll tack a half-star back on for her credit: back up to 2. And, to end on a happy note, we were super satisfied with her cake decorations. I had a white two-tiered cake with brown branches and green leaved winding around it. The cheesecakes were dark brown with white vines on them in the shape of hearts, and more of the green leaves. Maybe one of Boulder best kept secretes. This cute bakery and cafe menu consists of mouth watering sandwiches made to order, quiche of the day, sups and wraps. Very affordable prices ($5.25 sandwich, $3.75 quiche). To top it off they serve coffee and expresso drinks, cookies, cupcakes, pastries etc. I have to also mention Shammane's specializes in beautifully crafted and delicious wedding and speciality cakes. read more

I'm not one for sweets or coffee, but I needed 2 dozen cookies for a Holiday party, and called them 45 minutes before they closed in hopes they could put something together for me. They were busy, but were nice enough to stay open a half hour after they planned to close to make sure I was taken care of. Not only were the cookies phenomenal, but they were done on time, and there were more than 2 dozen cookies in the boxes they prepared for me! One of the best bakeries in Colorado. Its the variety/quality of baked items they offer that puts them near the top. Enjoyed the Chicken green chili soup, bison pastie, and chicken pot pie. Chicken pot pie was good although I think they put too much carrots in there not enough chicken and could have used a little more cream based filling. The crust is outstanding. The bison pastie was good but needed more meat in the pastry. Chicken Green chili soup had good flavor with the right amount of spiciness. The chocolate chip banana bread(very moist) and mango tres leches cake(great flavor) were my favorite pastries. Chocolate chip cookies were very good. Some of the chocolate chip cookie was a little heavy on the salt(sea salt?). The brownie was good but a little too rich in chocolate flavor for my liking. Others might like that though. Almond croissant was good. Could have used a little more filling(good almond flavor filling). Monkey bread very well baked with an excellent frosting. I could have used more of that great frosting. Quiche had great flavor. I would have preferred a little more crust with it. The crust is excellent. The crust on the galettes is outstanding. Great fresh fruit filling. One of the better pastries.
