Hot dog
Kathleen D.

I love Shake Shack and have lived three minutes driving distance away since they opened, but I avoided this particular location due to the overall poor reviews. That is until a couple of nights ago when I had quite the craving for a hot dog. I debated between Cookout and Shake Shack, ultimately choosing the latter. It was later at night, so perhaps it not being peak meal time helped with my wait time. I drove up to one of their ordering areas, placed my order, and paid with Apple Pay right there. I ordered a hot dog combo with fries and a Coke, as well as their fried pickles with ranch. Everything was hot and very tasty. The craving was satisfied....for now. Especially in the summer, hot dogs are my weakness. I'm sure I'll be back soon for a shake too.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]The positives of this place is that they have great parking and a lovely ambiance walking in.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The entire restaurant is clean with an open concept.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I ordered for pick up on a weekday evening which took about an hour from ordering to be ready. It was my first time ever trying Shake Shack and I had their Black Truffle Burger, Fries and Chicken Bites. They were out of most of their seasonal shake options and all of the flavored lemonades. They do not offer combos so I had to purchase each thing separately. Once I received my order, I was immediately underwhelmed by the size of the items for the price I paid. The fries come in one size for about 4.50 and my single burger was around 11. Compared to other fast casual restaurants like Five Guys who have similar pricing structures. The quantity did not match, the amount of fries you receive is equivalent to a small anywhere else. Which is fine, just not worth the cost. The burger was delicious but inconsistent, I ended up having bites that were seasoned perfectly and had a good amount of the additional condiments that come with the Black Truffle Burger and other bites that were dry and clearly didn't get seasoned properly. The Chicken Bites were a complete no from me and I could not reccomend them to anyone. They were extremely salty and coated in grease. Each bite felt like biting into a poppable pod filled with oil. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Overall, Shake Shack has the ambiance down pat and I could see myself thoroughly enjoying eating in.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The staff was also very kind and attentive. The pick up process could be more streamlined and I would like to see more consistency across the food items since the burger was pretty good, but the chicken bites were not. I may return to try their shakes as they have some interesting seasonal offerings if they become available again.

Just the fries.

My wife ordered 2 chicken sandwiches and 2 fries via Uber Eats. When the food was delivered we only got the fries and a bill for $24. It probably wasn't the Uber driver because he can't inspect the bag. The fries were good, but very expensive.

The Truffle burger (single that you get is not the one in the pictures.

You pay dine in restaurant money for fast food food. Not worth the $20+ I spent for a burger, fries and a tea. Plus you do your own order from a tablet. Order, pay for it and tip, all yourself from a tablet (they do have an order window but I didn't see anyone working it until I was leaving the counter ). I'll start with the good. Organic unsweet tea was great! Clean and fresh. Crinkle cut fries were crispy and hot. I'll be back for them both again. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Also the patio was nice with patio lights and music and cleaner than the inside.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Inside looked like people had been spilling drinks and they were never properly cleaned up.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They do bring the food to you but make sure you grab your own napkins, utensils, ketchup, etc before you sit down. They don't put any on the tray for you. Now the not so good. I bought the truffle parmigiana fries (you pay extra for those). Didn't taste any truffle oil and thought I received the regular fries until I notice a FEW pieces of parm on them. I couldn't taste that either. I was excited to try the big, juicy looking truffle burger. Ordered the single because doubles are usually way too big for me. The burger you get is NOT the burger in the pictures. It's TINY. So tiny and the patty is so thin. Then all of the truffle sauce and fried onions were only on one side of the burger. After the first bite, I tried redistributing them but there wasn't enough on the burger to even redistribute. Doubt I will be back unless I'm craving a fry fix.

SmokeShack

Stopped by here for a quick bite and ordered the Smoke Shack burger. It was a cheese burger with bacon and shack sauce. It was a relatively small size burger. The meat tasted great, shack sauce was quite good, although personally not a fan of the cherry pepper(tasted good, but didn't mesh well in the burger ). The burger ended up costing $9 which is a little pricy for "fast food" but it did taste better than other fast food spots. Overall a solid fast food burger. Food: 6.5 Staff/service: na Value: 6 Overall: 6.1/10

Well, I didn't actually eat anything since I didn't want to wait over 30 minutes for fast food. When I was walking towards the door a woman in the parking lot with 2 children warned me that she waited 45 minutes for her food. When I entered there were a bunch of people just standing around waiting. I glanced at some of the tables which had people and a majority of them were sitting there with no food. Looking over towards the kitchen area, there was one employee prepping food while another employee stood there watching. I would hope that person was training but who knows. I did see another employee behind the counter just wandering around. I didn't bother to order and just left. I'm not sure what's going on with this location. It could be bad management, bad employees or what? It's night and day compared to the experience you receive when you go to Chik-Fil-A.

Shake Shack is my favorite fast food place for burgers. We used to go here all the time in Miami or on trips to NYC. I got so excited when they finally opened in Richmond. It's located in Willow Lawn, it's not too far of a drive/bus ride to get to from downtown. There is a parking lot with a lot of spots. If it does overflow, there is more parking not too far away. I love the inside and outdoor space of this Shake Shack. It's pretty and has a lot of seating options. The most exciting thing for me was learning about the non-dairy shakes. They taste exactly like a normal shake, but without the tummy ache for lactose intolerant folks! I got the chocolate one and adored it. We tried their white wine and their rose wine too. Do note they are on the cheap side. I also ordered the normal Shack Burger like I usually do and loved it. The fries have never been my favorite at Shack Shack (they're a bit airy), but I still order them because they complete the meal and are fun to munch on. If you haven't had Shake Shack, I highly recommend it.

Double bacon cheeseburger with crispy onions and Shack Sauce; Chicken Bites (6 pc.) (Drive-thru order)
Ry L.

Long story short, I love Shake Shack, perhaps more than any one person should and despite its shortcomings. This was my first time using the drive-thru at this recently opened location (RVA's first). There was nobody in line which was a stark contrast from my visit during opening week when the lines were around the corner, spilling onto Broad Street. The guy who took my order at the speaker was a bit hasty and impatient. I barely had a second to even look over the menu when I pulled up, but luckily I knew what I wanted. His unnecessary sense of urgency only prevented me from ordering more than I planned, so perhaps that was a good thing, lol. It's so nice that there's a pay terminal at the same window where you place your order, plus it has tap to pay. When I arrived at the window, there were two employees standing with their backs leaning against the window. One opened the window and asked me my name, and then closed it. A third employee approached the window a minute or two later (with the same two young ladies still standing with their backs pressed against the window present) and asked me my name again and then handed me my order. I'm not sure wherein lied the disbelief about my name, and I'm wondering why one of the young ladies who was standing there seemingly doing nothing couldn't have relayed that info. The service was a little off-putting simply based on the unprofessional demeanor and too chill attitude of the employees, but not enough to truly irritate or annoy me. They were nice enough. I've never liked Shake Shack's mouth-wide-open paper bags, especially because the burgers don't typically come in enclosed boxes as they just come in a paper sleeve. Your food gets cold way faster than necessary. But, once I got home, the chicken nuggets (which were in an enclosed box) were still hot but the burger was lukewarm. Fifteen seconds in the microwave and problem solved. My double bacon cheeseburger with crispy onions and Shack Sauce was delicious! It had the delectable crispy edges that I go crazy over when it comes to smash burgers. My tummy can't usually handle fast food, but Shake Shack is one of the few spots I can take. There's something shamefully quintessential-American about grabbing a burger from a fast food spot, so I'm glad I still have a tolerable option thanks to Shake Shack.

I have been a Shake Shack fan since I first had it at their flagship store in NYC, and this location keeps up the same theme of delicious (albeit expensive) fare. I had been looking forward to this location's opening ever since hearing about it six months prior. They did a beautiful job with both the interior and exterior, and the drive-thru design is quite clever. This aesthetic in combination with their outstanding take-out/delivery boxes that help keep food warm without getting wilted are part of what has allowed their international expansion to continue unabated, finally coming to Richmond. I came here with a friend and found plenty of parking since this Shake Shack is the only thriving business in the shopping center it moved into. We ordered via the tablets to keep things easy, and since it was so busy we had to take a dirty table (no problem for me, I used to work in food service so had no qualms about cleaning it myself). We waited for quite some time and finally got our orders, which were unsurprisingly delicious and worth the wait. They have the crispiest fries imaginable, and the shack sauce is to die for. Ultimately, the food and aesthetic of the place are what make it so popular, because it certainly isn't the pricing (very expensive for what you get, not a great value), service (average), or speed (we waited 20 minutes for two burgers and fries). Shake Shack serves a very narrow band of clientele: folks who want to avoid fast food but don't want to go to a top-shelf full-service burger place like Burger Bach. If you absolutely want the best crispy fries or are in love with the aesthetic, you'll like it here. Overall: 4.0 stars ---- Pros: - Delicious burgers and outstanding fries with shack sauce. - Very upscale aesthetic, love the design both inside and out. - Great container design, helps keep food pristine no matter the length of the journey it has to take. Cons: - The value is a tough sale: small burger and fries for around $16, so full-service pricing for a fast casual experience. - When they're busy, prepare to have to nab a table quickly and wait 20 minutes or more for your food.

Why?! Y'all do yourself a favor and get your burgers and fries from a mom and pop joint somewhere else. We got here at just the "right" time since we did not have to wait to get a parking spot or kiosk. It did take 17 minutes to get our food. And that food was awful. Two small bacon cheeseburgers, one cheese fries, one bottled water, and one shake cost $35. Not worth it. The cheese on the cheese fries tasted like boxed Kraft, macaroni and cheese sauce. Zero flavor and runny. The burgers were essentially Wendy's. Just go to Wendy's if you want this. The fries are crinkle cut and taste like frozen and baked like you'd make at home. Service was friendly. The line is more to control the busyness of the kitchen, than traffic. They shut the kiosks down to slow down orders so the kitchen can keep up. They hold you at the door for the same reason. I have no desire to ever return. Even the shakes are just shakes. Nothing special. And the food gave me a headache, and I never get headaches. Nope.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]When I say this place was spotless I truly do mean it. Everything was hospital clean[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. When you walk through the door there are 4 ordering screens, and one space to order from the counter. There was not a designated cashier standing there at all times, but if anybody walked up, someone definitely made sure to stop and see what they needed. The ordering system was simple to use and displayed wonderful clear large pictures. There was also an over sized menu printed on the wall that was easy to read. After ordering you take a plastic number and add it to the end of your order. I went took a seat by the window and waited about 10mins for my food. [[HIGHLIGHT]]There is outdoor seating and two tvs in the eating area.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Everything was good but not great and definitely not worth over $15.00 in my personal opinion. I would come back if someone invited me but I don't think this is at the top of my list to come back alone.

Yesterday was the opening of Richmond's First Shake Shack. Surprisingly we waited in line for 15min and got our food within 20 min after ordering. If anything this was the first time I've experienced fast service on an opening. I ordered the shake burger and for some reason it was tasteless. The burger was a little over cooked and the shake sauce didn't taste as it usually is. My cheese was melted in the burger probably because it was over cooked. It could be due to opening day, and lines were long. But it wasn't bad. Around $7 I also got the Veggie burger and it wasn't bad. It had different flavors but definitely did not taste like a burger haha! Around $8.5 The spicy cheese fries was extremely tasty but unfortunately forgot to get the side of ranch. That's fine because I forgot about it but it was tastyyyy!! Around $5 Also got the chocolate milkshake ($6) and it was a typical milkshake. The Oreo milkshake did not taste good. Would not recommend it. ($7)

Again all lukewarm. The Timberwolf burger had maybe two jalapeño's on it and the onions were burnt. The regular burgers and kids are the same size. Housemade pickles were soggy and the cucumber skins were tough. The quality of food from when we had eaten here a couple years ago was subpar in comparison. If you are going to charge for upscale items then they need to be upscale in the quality of what you are serving. Will not be back.

The menu has so many tempting options that it was hard to choose, but we both landed on the Hot Chicken Sandwich with cayenne butter--and we're glad we did. It had the perfect amount of heat: enough to bring some spice without overpowering the flavor. On the side, I ordered the green beans after our bartender/server highly recommended them. Normally, green beans wouldn't be my first choice, but they were seasoned perfectly and ended up being one of the biggest surprises of the meal. My partner chose the mac and cheese, which was the superior side (although both were excellent). The service was friendly, attentive, and genuine throughout the evening. Despite arriving on a Friday night without a reservation, we had no trouble getting a table. They only accept reservations for parties of 5-8, so I'm glad we decided to take our chances. One of my favorite parts of the evening was chatting with another guest at the bar. He and his wife shared several entrées with their young son, and they couldn't stop raving about the short ribs--which their son happily claimed for himself by the end of the meal! They also highly recommended the salmon, so we've already got ideas for our next visit. The only real downside has nothing to do with the restaurant itself: parking in Scott's Addition can be a challenge. I'd recommend allowing yourself some extra time to find a spot or, even better, taking a rideshare so you can start enjoying your evening right away. Lunch.
