Great store with all of the right stuff! I was struggling to get a 5.5 mm straight stitch plate for my Bernina 570QE. The quilt store I bought my machine from was not listening to me when I told them the plate was DEFINITELY a 5.5mm (even when I took the plate and machine into the store!) because they did not understand the 1st edition 570's had 5.5 not 9 mm plates. Sometimes you just need someone to listen and be willing to ask Bernina what on the surface seems like a dumb question. Precious went above and beyond to get me the plate and she did it quickly. This is my first Bernina, I almost went back to my 25-year-old Pfaff because I struggled so much with straight seams when I switched over. Sew Magarbo is now my go to. read more

Sew Magarbo is amazing. My daughter had her 8th birthday party here where they taught her and her friends how to sew a doll dress. They had such a great time. I got such great and positive feedback from the kids and parents! The instructor was patient and fantastic with the kids! The kids loved looking at all the gorgeous fabrics and fun sewing items in the store too. I also had a great experience doing a girls night at Sew Magarbo. My friends and I had a sewing class in the evening where we learned basic sewing and we got to make a cute pouch! Tons of laughter and fun and something different than just your typical girls night. I highly recommend Sew Magarbo for all your sewing needs. Definitely check them out! read more

I have been going to Sew Magarbo for almost 5 years now. From classes, to supplies, to machine repairs, to anything you could ever need, they've got it! The owner is so friendly and helpful and goes out of her way to make sure you're taken care of. Highly recommend this place as a beginner or advanced sewer! The studio also often hosts specific classes and events for certain machines or projects. They also have so many machines available to try and test. The owner is super knowledgeable on all the machines and will match you based on your experience and desires. Ignore reviews about the contracts for classes and experiences with them. The contracts are very clear with all requirements and stipulations and penalties - very normal for an annual class contract. One thing about the classes - these classes will have a mix of experience levels. So you could be a beginner starting your level 1 in a class with a level 5. These classes are designed to go at your pace which is beneficial for the student and teachers and will encourage you to challenge yourself in your spare time. Depending on your dedication outside of class and willingness to challenge yourself will determine how quickly you advance through levels. I completed 6 out of the 7 levels in one year of classes. Others have completed all. I've also seen others who take the entire year to complete one level because they don't dedicate the time outside of the class to progress and don't utilize class time properly. You're going to get out of it what you put into it. Also, The classes are structured to teach you more and more advanced skills as you progress so each level will be matched with a more difficult project of your choice (from a list). Ignore the naysayers. This place is great and the location is perfect for the area. read more

I took my machine in for service. They did not fix it, charged me for service, and when I got home it still was not working. When I took it back, they had their technician look at it again, he said it was too old to fix. The told me over the phone and offered to sell me a similar machine, a floor model. When I got back to the store they raised the quoted price. I left with my machine, out the original service fee. I bought a machine elsewhere. I then opened the old machine, only to find that the problem was a screw had vibrated loose, and the machine had not been serviced. Totally dishonest. I took my Singer sewing machine in for service as it was running slow (sluggish) on 9/27/22. I was told the technician would pick it up on Sat. and then give us a call as to whether or not he could repair the machine. I received a message from the tech on 10/5 that the sewing machine was not worth the money it would cost to fix it, so I could come by and pick it up. I went to the store on 10/6 and the owner was not aware that I was coming even though I spoke with the tech and told him I would be in to pick up the machine. I ask the owner to have the tech call me to let me know what was wrong with the machine and what parts were needed. I still wanted to fix the sewing machine because it is a family heirloom. The tech did not call until the next day and he admitted that they did not do anything to diagnose what was wrong...and then charged me the $30! (For NOTHING!) I took the sewing machine to another repair store...they cleaned and oiled the machine and it is running excellent!!! I will never go to Sew Magarbo again! The service was awful - they should stick to selling fabric and machines as they really do not have the knowledge necessary to repair sewing machines. read more

I was in need of a discontinued fabric. I saw it listed on their website when I did a Google search. I called the shop to see if they actually had any in stock. A lovely woman answered the phone, located the fabric and let me know they had exactly the amount I needed. What a lucky day for me! I took in my sewing machine today the young lady working(sorry I didn't get her name! maybe Casey?) helped me. She looked at my machine and was extremely honest with me. Saying that if she had a technician look at it they wouldn't be able to fix it bc of the model of my machine. She then did not charge me the 150.00 service fee. She was extremely helpful and kind. I want to keep this gem my little secret, but I guess it's always nicer to share. This place is awesome. The owner / teacher, Precious, is super sweet and friendly but also no nonsense, knowledgeable, and approachable. For context of this review: I am a hearty DIY person, and I have self-taught rudimentary sewing skills. I was looking to gain solid fundamentals for making garments, so I searched for classes that would fit my learning needs, schedule, and budget. I checked out class schedules for JoAnn, G Street, various independent quilt shops in Fairfax County, and even Nova CC. I am so thankful I finally found Sew Magarbo; it fit all of my criteria. It has a modern vibe and different types and levels of classes and "bootcamp" workshops for youth and adults. Precious is a true educator and seems to care genuinely about her students' learning. The energy around this business wasn't to my liking, as was the owner herself. Her business practices are questionable. I signed up for a month-to-month class program for my daughter. After the month, we wanted to stop classes for a several reasons (my daughter didn't like the feel of the studio, she felt uncomfortable and intimidated when the owner was teaching the class, only 1 project complete after 4 weeks, limited knowledge gained, etc...). When I tried to cancel, the owner told me I hadn't given her a month's notice so she would be charging me for another month. She told me this was written in her contract. And lo and behold this "gotcha clause" was in the contract, but it's so nonsensical when you're signing up for month-to-month to begin with, you'd think they'd highlight or bold it or point it out upon sign up. Since I didn't see it, I got charged for a month, and the owner was not open to discussing how ridiculous it was that I had to give notice when I signed up (even though I told her we were just trying it out for the month to have the flexibility of not being caught in a year long contract). I was charged for another month even though we got nothing out of it since my daughter refused to go back. The owner had no moral qualms with taking the money even if no service was provided. I don't write reviews unless I really feel there's something really wrong or really right with a business. Checking out BBB on her, there is a complaint. I will be adding one as well. Proceed with caution here because she is not customer oriented. The pics of the business of the biz look nice and happy, but don't match reality IMHO. read more

I brought my Bernina in for it's first service. The quick turn around was amazing. It was ready for pickup in half the estimated time. When I arrived they had my machine all set up ready for a check out before I left the store. They even had pictures to show me the insides. I won't be taking my Machine anywhere else but Sew Magarbo. Not recommend for service of sewing machines. I brought in a sewing machine for routine service. It was returned to me not-working. I was told "two technicians looked at it and it cannot be saved." This was a working machine. Nothing wrong. I had to fix it myself, and I know what was done, yet they still implied they had helped. Not a good experience. read more

No one there to answer calls, normal business hours, sent several emails requesting information, no replies after 2 days - they say within 48 hours - and the emails where mid week. I would have to travel at least an hour to get there so I am not going to drive there to see if it is open and if they have the machine I want. I recently had my embroidery machine serviced at Sew Magarbo and I can NOT say enough about how happy I am. They were quick and affordable with excellent customer service and SUPER friendly staff. While I was there, I got information about all the other things they have to offer. With embroidery and sewing workshops, "bootcamps" and classes for children, teens, and adult, I am sure I will be back here very soon. They even have an after school and summer program for kids. They also have a wide variety of fabrics that I have not seen at other larger fabric stores in the area. Plus, I always love an opportunity to support a local small business and I HIGHLY recommend this one. read more
