But the owner was very knowledgeable and helpful. The fabric is not cheap. They had quality fabrics here. He mentioned most were imported and it showed. I picked out some fabric and was on my way. Enter "A Fabric Place." I found them online and they were the first store I went to on my quest to match the swatch of fabric I had. I was not disappointed. The young lady matched the fabric to almost perfection. She saved my event!!!! Not wearing the purchased dress was not an option! Not to mention how friendly she and the other staff were. I then went to the back room to get the thread I needed and..this room gave me an immediate flashback to my childhood when my Mom took me to Morten Schenk in downtown Baltimore. I loved it because the store was a wall of buttons!!! It looked like jewels all over the walls. It was a fond memory that I shared with one off the staff who remembered the store. This shop has amazing fabrics and amazing customer service. The staff is super friendly and very helpful. This little gem of a store is bigger than it looks. I have shopped in various fabric/craft stores and always have a problem finding a variety of fabrics at reasonable prices. Well, those days are over. A fabric place is the best place to get a huge selection of fabric and sewing materials. It is not a arts and crafts store which allows it to focus strictly on fabrics. Shopping local for fabric can all be done here. This shop is a fabric mecca, they have it all. Tucked away near Roland Park, this small shop offers endless options when you walk inside. They have a private parking lot, so you won't be concerned with finding on street parking or a spot in a shopping center lot. There's a large central area where fabric is cut. Staff are friendly and have been very helpful during both visits. There's rooms of fabrics that are very well priced and unique. The tough part about going to a big box store is lack of variety. A Fabric Place has that missing variety. I could have stayed for a very long time looking through numerous varieties and options. They also have a room with threads, needles, etc. I was extremely happy with my experience and I recommend anyone stop in when in need of fabric. I don't think you'd be disappointed. read more

This place is fabric heaven!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So many options and the fabric choices are sooooooooooooo beautiful! They have a GREAT selection of specialty fabrics. If you're looking for fabrics for gowns or sequins or embellished fabrics, stop here first! The customer service here was superb! I was nicely greeted when I came in and if I had a question, it was answered or they would stop what they were doing to show me fabrics options of what I was looking for even though they did not have it. They didn't follow me around or stand next to me awkwardly the whole time while I shopped around. LOL. Their sewing patterns are only $2! Granted, a lot of the patterns are old but I did find a few that was worth buying for $2. The guy gave me a discount on fabric that I was interested in buying. Bless his sweet little heart. They have sooooooooooooooooooooooo many cute little buttons. I'm definitely going back when I have money to spend. I'm on a tight budget and couldn't splurge like I wanted. LOL. I feel bad giving this place 2 stars without even stepping in the door. But that's what happens when you don't update your website. I checked the website yesterday before I went there to get fabric to cover my throw pillows, the hours said it was open till 9PM. So naturally, I did all of my other errands and drove WAY out of my way to get there to find out they were closed. They had a sign on their door with "Summer Hours" stating that they closed at 5PM that day! I was furious that I took the effort to look up the hours and drove out of my way all for nothing! What a waist of my time. I would have preferred spending my money at a mom and pop shop like this who may need my business to actually stay in business, but it looks like JoAnn Fabrics is going to be my next stop because I know their hours will be accurate. Come on people get with the program, update your website with proper hours... probably the most important thing other than your address! read more

I am a devoted supporter/lover of this fabric store. The staff is incredibly personable and so helpful--I don't think I've ever felt so welcome in a store than here. They're so sweet and they love helping out everyone and when I was in undergrad as a Fibers major, they helped me afford my materials for several projects. Though I missed it, they even let one of my classes access to their warehouse stock and sold their discontinued or overstock wares at crazy discounted prices. I'm still kicking myself over that. And if you come at the right time and their remnants bin is overflowing, you may luck out like me and get your hands on some beautiful designer silk brocade for almost nothing. Love the selection, love the staff--I just can't say enough good things about this place. Lastly, here's an example of how helpful they are: I told them I was going to Asia for a year for a project and they even offered to send me whatever I needed while I was there. I left with a thick pile of swatches for my convenience and even though I didn't take them up on the offer, it was still extremely thoughtful of them. I've also been fed cupcakes while shopping here. I love this store for what it is. The last bastion for fine sewing in the Baltimore area. Here, you can find lovely wools, silks and cottons. They even carry some tailoring items like fusible hair canvas. There is a wide range of prices. From $6 a yard for a lovely Italian cotton to $40 a yard for a Chanel boucle. The owners are very friendly and always ask what you're up to. And, they are happy to work with you on prices and find alternatives when they see that 'must have' look on your face. Don't come for pattern sales -- that's what the big box stores are for. read more

This place is amazing!!! I went to 7 different fabrics stores from VA to DC and all around MD looking for a good selection of bridal lace an I found that and sooooo much more here. The selection is unmatched by 'the other guys' in the area. PLUS the staff was incredible- best customer service experience ever. They were helpful in my decision process and offered great advice and even pulled fabric for me based on my project description. Very genuine folks here! And a serious amount of stock, quality stock and great prices. I feel like I found a real gem here. I was searching for a particular thing but I saw they have great variety in trim, notions, ribbon, and all types of fabric. As an emerging fashion designer, I hold my fabric stores to a pretty high regard. "A Fabric Place" has a combination of GREAT quality (I repeat, quality!) fabric, AWESOME prices, and a welcoming atmosphere. It's the combination of these three that makes it my new favorite place to hunt for fabrics. I was told about this shop by a fellow designer and after her raving, I HAD to leave my DC boundaries to see what it was all about. I don't regret it for a moment. There were no stores in the DC area that provide me with the same overall experience elsewhere. All of the other reviews pretty much hit the nail on it's head. I'm in love! Michael is beyond words! I recently took a trip to search for fabrics for a new collection I'm constructing and I could not leave without thanking him enough. He even gave a great suggestion for Pepe's Diner, which is up the street. I'm about to go review them now, because that was also amazing! Even though it's a distance from me, it won't stop me from becoming a loyal customer. I really have no negative words. They don't have the best selection of notions (besides buttons) and supplies and little things like muslin but I could care less! It's called a "fabric" place and it's won me over! I had to start up a Yelp JUST to put in a good word! They also give the most generous swatches that I've ever come across (not those little 3/4" slivers that you can barely work with) and give greats deals in general, but especially on remnants! read more

I came here to buy fabric for a project for my daughter's bas mitzvah and had such a wonderful experience! I was greeted by a very friendly woman who was readily available to help me but did not hover at all. The fabrics are gorgeous and abundant. When I found what I wanted, the woman deftly calculated and cut how much material I needed, gave me some advice on sewing with this particular fabric, and even kindly gave me the sale price even though the sale had ended a day prior. I rarely sew and cannot honestly say I will frequent the store, but I WILL highly recommend it to anyone who does. You will appreciate shopping here so much more than Jo-Ann Fabrics. read more

I've been shopping in this store since I was in 9th grade (1976)! My mom used to take me to the first location down in Mt. Washington. I've followed them to 3 locations. I've only been in there twice and I already love it. I'm still a sewing beginner, but perusing their amazing selection of fabrics and notions has given me so much inspiration for future projects. The staff is super friendly, welcoming, and most importantly, helpful. I'm pretty much in love with a room in the back that has beautiful (and colorful!) designer tweeds and boucles, though those can get a little bit pricey. Loves love love! Michael is great and handles very high end fabrics including Gucci, Chanel, and Burberry. I purchased some beautiful Alpaca for a coat. The have a good quality of suitings up to the 200s and good quality woolens. I think the back room for the notions is a bit dated but I am sure people are not visiting the store for that. I had a great experience here even though the inventory is lacking a bit. The owner is very accommodating and goes out if his way to make sure you have what you need. I've been shopping at A Fabric Place for several years and can't say enough about the great customer service, high quality of apparel fabrics and large selection of woolens, silks, specialty fabrics, linings, and designer cuts. They offer gift certificates (put this on your holiday gift list). Don't come here if you are looking for cheap cottons for making a quilt...their specialty is quality! The staff is attentive and helpful. They will go to all troubles to help serve your needs. And the button selection is "over the moon"! The next closest place to go for fancy and quality is NYC Fashion/garment district. A bit too far for me on a regular basis! Not sure why someone had a problem with the hours listed on the website. I always call ahead when I'm going to a new shop that I haven't visited. I'd give them 10 stars if I could! read more

A Fabric Place is not the place to go for the standard range of overpriced polyester crap or gaudy but useless sewing notions. Instead, A Fabric Place is where you go to find that perfect fabric for your commitment ceremony gown, to wander through racks of delicious fabrics of all kinds, to marvel at the entire room full of silk, and to be inspired or to plan another twenty or thirty sewing or craft projects. In short, this is a seamstress' paradise. I've been here at least a dozen times and I've always been a happy camper. I sew most of my kids cloths and just about all of my clothing with the exception of jeans. They have the greatest variety of material and every button imaginable. My kids hate to come with me because I spend so much time there and they do get bored but that's the way it goes! read more

I'm not a huge sewing fanatic, but I needed some fabric for a little DIY project for my office. I like to try to support more local, family-owned type places and this store was right by my apartment! When I stopped in, I was (unfortunately) the only customer there even though there were several workers (I think they were all the same family, there was even a little daughter working on homework). At least 3 of them came over to ask if they could help and make suggestions while I browsed. They seemed genuinely interested in helping me find the right fabric for my job. The woman who ultimately measured out my fabric was very precise and took extra care with the fabric I wanted. She was friendly and thanked me for my business. I have been an avid sewer and buyer of fabric for over 30 years. The one staff person I met at A Fabric Place was very polite and willing to help had I needed assistance. While it is true the store has an extensive fabric selection, the display left much to be desired. The bolts were lying on the floor or stacked on tables with no signs and no labels for types of fabric. Part of the fun of visiting a fabric store is the interesting display of fabric paired with patterns and samples to spark ideas. Because the overall ambiance of the store was so messy and uninviting, I left without buying anything. While it is the last independent fabric store in Baltimore, they could certainly shape us their display of fabric and clean up the store. Feng Shui does indeed matter. read more
