I just took the Crochet Bootcamp course with Brittni and it was amazing! Perfect for folks who have never picked up a hook to get the very basics of the process. I loved that it was a small group, we could ask all the questions we had, and the instruction was really tailored to how we were doing. It's a small store but has a moderately wide selection of yarns including cotton. Much better than a Michael's. They will cake the yarn for you. The two associates were very knowledgeable about the products. They answered all questions but in a curt manner. They seems annoyed by mine and my girlfriend's existence as my girlfriend excitedly explained yarn to me. The prices were very reasonable. I would go back out of convenience for something specific but would recommend a larger more friendly store to spend time in for pursuing for new items. read more

I love this place! Bonus: if you get stuck in a pattern you can message, call, or FaceTime and they will help you! I messaged a photo of my project and she knew exactly what stitch I was doing wrong just from the photo. They have kits for people who just want one project and only the yarn to do it, they have gorgeous artisan yarns for special occasions, they have mini-skeins and mini booklets for amigurumi mini projects, and they have the hooks and needles to make it work. The staff here is friendly and seems to like being there and chatting about projects. If you don't have a lot of storage space come pick up a kit. If you're a yarn hoarder come add to your stash! Love love lovely yarns. First time I entered the store to sign up for a class I was hooked. Took my first class in January (top down knit raglan). Only a beginner knitter. Melissa (owner) was the instructor and so informative, and hands on. You not only get class instruction but if you have any problem between the classes you are so welcomed at the store to help with any problems you may have. The selection of yarns is very good, but what is outstanding is the service and help you get here. On my first visit, the owner was there and spent lots of time with me, pointing out the local yarns I was interested in and answering my questions. I've been meaning to get here for literally years (2) - so there was a lot of expectation that wasn't requited. This place is dinky! I was greeted immediately and, since I didn't have an immediate need, I just browsed. Lots of pretty accessories (stitch markers, jewelry) tempted me. I saw knit and crochet samples for cheap, too. Unfortunately, none of the yarns called to me, they were unfamiliar brands. I would have likely bought some Rowan, Addi Turbos, or Noro if there were any... I think this review might get filtered. But this is only an OK store. There are nice yarns and a pretty good selection. But I only really go there when I am desperate for some needles that I don't own. I find the customer service here to be quite lacking. I want to support them because it is local, but all of my encounters with the staff tend to be negative and snarky. I feel like I shouldn't ask for help because I will only get a snarky response. Knitters need to be more welcoming of one another. If I don't know something and I ask, I am asking for help. So please help and not make me feel belittled for not knowing. Also, while I was browsing hearing the staff talk unkindly of visitors who just left is really disconcerting. Edit: I just came in to buy some stuff. After reading other yelp reviews I knew I had to check out this yarn store. I'm so glad that I did! It's a small shop filled with beautiful yarns at reasonable prices. The owner and her assistant were both very friendly and helpful. I had a vague idea about wanting to knit a shawl for my mother. Many useful suggestions were offered and I finally found exactly the right yarn and pattern. (The owner wrote out the pattern for me since she had no more print copies.) The yarn I purchased was wound for me on this wonderful wooden gadget. All part of the great service. The 45 minute drive was worth the trip! read more

I love small business for their charm and Susan and her darling shop do not disappoint. I had never held a pair of knitting needles until taking a class last year. Now I am an avid knitter. Super cute yarn shop in Hampden! I went there for a class, and the staff was accommodating. My teacher was patient, and I had a great time there! The shop is small, so the selection of yarns is limited (at least from what I can see). I'd definitely consider going there to get yarn, do a stitch n bitch session on Saturdays, or take another class there (much more reasonably priced than other yarn shops in Baltimore). read more

Came here for the PLY Party on Sept. 11. 2011 (yes my review is late). Ohmygosh was it amazing. This small store was PACKED with knitters. For the even they had free (let me emphasize the FREE) cupcakes that were REALLY GOOD, bagels, hummus, fruit lolipops and beverages. There were tons of really good vendors I for one fell i love with Space Cadet but I didnt dare buy any or I would have gone bananas (I am currently unemployed so this would be an issue). The owner was absolutely wonderful although I must say one of the staff members who was wearing a blue tiara was not being a very friendly bunny. In fact she was kinda bossy and not very helpful and that is NOT the attitude to carry in a YARN shop ya hear? This staff person in fact is the only reason why I am withholding the extra star, but I'm sure once I visit again without the crazy yarn party extravaganza going on I will be in love and all will be forgiven. read more

This is my go-to yarn shop, as I live right around the corner. I'm fortunate that it's so great! The selection is a bit small, but quite varied. They have wool, alpaca, blends, cotton, silk, tools, raw material, and amazing colors of it all. The prices match the quality of yarn, so some are cheaper while others are more pricey. But you get what you pay for. I do have to make a shout out to the amazing employees there. Every time I visit they have been warm and welcoming. Even when extremely busy, they will make time to help everyone, and they do it with a smile on their face and terrifying efficiency. After a bad experience at another yarn store (Black Sheep Yarn Shop) I knew I had to ring in my praise for this one, for doing it right. Service is so incredibly important, and these women are great at it. I'd like to see them carry a bit more alpaca, as they only had a few skeins of it last time I went (this may have been because of the holiday yarn crafts rush). I had the opportunity to purchase a living social deal for a beginner learn to knit class. It was a great experience! As someone who has never knit before, this was the perfect introduction for me. I used to frequent here whenever I needed some inspiration or yarn for a project. The staff are soo incredibly helpful, friendly, and truly sweet. They are so knowledgable and creative. Lovelyarns has a great selection of yarn in a wide variety of materials with great prices. The upstairs is a really great space with amazing selection of knitting needles. Definitely the best place to stock up on yarn and ideas in the Baltimore area and it's local~~~ Yay!!! They participate in many Baltimore events. I remember one year, the owner was knitting an ocean - (literally creatures and all) to display on a mini cooper for ArtScape. She was helping me find the best yarn for my project and knitting an octopus at the same time! The octopus turned out beautiful and my project was a great success. She was so talkative, helpful and friendly and she made such an effort to engage my kids, which I really appreciated (they were bored out of their minds being dragged to multiple yarn shops during the Charm City Yarn Crawl, haha!). Thank you for a great time during Local Yarn Store Day! Staff took time to explain and demo the drop spinning wheels and fiber. Customers and staff were welcoming and encouraging and anxious to share info and generally support anyone in the store. Purchased a wheel, some roving (which was on sale) and a skein of cotton yarn than included a free pattern. I inquired about a certain bag in the shop and was immediately gifted with it. They said there were printing errors associated with it and they weren't wanting to sell it. THANK YOU!! My second visit there from out of state- won't be my last!!! read more

This place is amazing! I came here a couple of years ago while I was in town for a job interview. At the time, I was debating moving from St. Louis to the Baltimore area... and let's just say, finding a new "home base" yarn shop was pretty darn high on my list. The ladies in this shop were so kind and welcoming! I ended up coming back at least one more time before I flew home because I loved chillaxing with them for knit afternoon. It was sooo relaxing. They have an amazing selection of yarn, notions, fiber, and other tools. I bought a locally-made drop spindle, some raw fiber to spin (gotta keep it real on travel!) as well as some beautiful yarn. It was incredibly difficult to make a decision on what to purchase because they had so many options. Also definitely check out the bathroom, they have amazingly funny knitting memes stuck all over the wall. They also have looms upstairs for weaving. The neighborhood around here made me nostalgic for home. Overall amazing shop and I will definitely return here if I ever decide to visit again. I ended up not moving in the end, even though I was offered a job... but I could end up here on travel again so I will definitely stop by and say hello again and buy some more stuff! :) read more

The shop and owner are so nice and welcoming! I had purchased yarn on a whim a couple of years ago, and when I went to start a project, realized I had severely under purchased the amount I needed. I went back in 2 years later and they were able to order the same yarn for me, and didn't require a minimum purchase. They also used their yarn-winder to turn my hanks into balls and I was so grateful! The other skeins I had wound by hand. I really want to like this place. I want to support a local independent store and I want to be able to get quality yarn close to my house. I have been to Lovelyarns a few times over the past couple years and won't be going back. Besides the limited hours being pretty inconvenient and the selection being somewhat limited, I have been disappointed by the customer service. Each time I have felt like my questions were an inconvenience to the staff. Awhile back while I was waiting to get rung up, the woman at the register was very rude to another customer and her friend.
