Had a fabulous time at SO Original for a birthday celebration for a dear friend of mine. Ran by a mother and daughter duo, this unique and educational establishment takes the cake when it comes to tutorials and hands -on workshops. With plenty beautiful yarn and knit fabrics to choose from, you can really get creative here. Whether you are a beginner or seasoned at the art of crotchet, anyone can join in the fun. We're not super local but hubby received a gift certificate to SO original from a friend who lives in Columbia. It took us almost six months to make it out there on a Saturday, but we went last weekend in search of yarn for a hat he wants to make. We were both impressed with the shop. Lana, the owner, is delightful and super helpful. She asked which of us was the knitter and didn't assume it was me (it is both! But he was the shopper that day!) and she spent a bunch of time showing him options based on what parameters he gave. While they searched I went off on my own looking at the selection and saw she has a really good variety of both workhorse standards and some luxury brands as well. When hubby wasn't sure if he would need 2 or 3 balls due to ambiguity in how the pattern requirements were described, she said if he bought 3 and didn't use the last one he could return it - that is very rare! I suspect he could make something from the third if he doesn't use it anyway but it was very kind of her to offer. She has a cute and very chill pup hanging out at the store with her and many samples to see how various yarns knit up. Honestly if I hadn't gone completely off the rails buying 3 sweater quantities at Alpaca & Fleece last month I would have bought a bunch for myself too when we were there. Next time! read more

This yarn shop is absolutely wonderful. The selection is superb from cotton to alpaca and more! They carry an excellent assortment of notions and needles plus patterns and books of all sorts. Really anything you want for Knitting is here plus one more thing. The owner is amazing and so kind and helpful. They have classes periodically, but in addition to that the owner will help you if you have questions or need some guidance on a specific project. If you are a Knitter or crocheter in Maryland, or are visiting Maryland, this is THE place to visit! read more

My first experience at a full yarn shop and I can't wait to keep coming back. The shop is tiny but has more supplies than you could ever imagine for even the most specific projects. Lana is the sweetest soul and will show you the way whether you're just starting or an expert, she will leave an imprint on any customer she can get to know. Of course the prices are higher than your regular acrylic yarns from Hobby Lobby or Michael's but the quality is unbelievable. This is the best place to go to find inspiration for your next project or a new yarn to try, I highly recommend! read more

A lovely yarn shop that relocated from Olney, a few years back. A plethora of supplies and, unlike Baltimore area shops, has a very progressive and welcoming clientele. The major drawback, and what you need to know in advance, is that you will be charged for ANY assistance with your project. The only free service, other than sitting and working in an extremely small area and help with purchases, will result in a charge. I've been going to So Original for several years. I've taken lessons and classes and get it my supplies here since they have a great selection....love the alpaca yarns ....and Lana is so knowledgeable about knitting. (She can always figure and fix my mistakes too.) Lana carries a great variety of yarn....colors, sizes, material but all of the highest quality. I love everything about this yarn store. Great selection - no matter what your price range. Lots of friendly help. There is always a lovely group of women knitting, crocheting, weaving, and enjoying life whenever I go in. I always leave with a smile (and a bag of yarn). They have helped me understand yarn types and encouraged me to be more ambitious in my projects. They have offered to order something if they don't have it (which has yet to happen). I've watched them help correct mistakes on projects gone wrong. I don't like going to the large craft stores, they never have the range or quality I want. If I'm going to spend so much time on something, it's best to do it with supplies I love. This place has them all. read more

The fantastic staff will cheerfully encourage you to reach for the next level of craftsmanship and enthusiastically help you get there.
