Sometimes the most random joints can make you satisfied. My hubby and I went up to DTLA Jewelry district to find our ring. But we were hungry. We decided to stop by Chinatown first to get something to eat.... and realized that there was a parade going on for Chinese New Year's so lots of streets were blocked and we didn't get to go near even one joint. After spending more than 30 minutes in traffic, we decided to just go back to Jewelry district and we went shopping on our empty stomach. After we ordered our ring, we were headed home. We were past the point of being extremely hungry. Then, while we were walking down Hill Street between 6th and 7th st, we saw this Kebab sign across the street, across the parking lot. I asked my hubby if he wanted Kebab, and since both of us were down for ANYTHING (other than McDs) we crossed the street and went in to this joint. It was like 3PM already (and yeah, we were having our 1st meal of the day) and no other customers were around. The place looked simple and neat. It kind of looked like a food court setting, so we went up to the register to order, but they told us to just take our seats and they will take our order on our table. Super. First came the salad and hummus and pita bread. Salad was unnecessarily large, but it was ok overall. The hummus, tho, was the real deal. They give you a small container with a lid for each people, and when you open it up, there is that goodness of flavor. I have to say it was pretty good hummus out of all the ones I've tasted. That got me psyched. My hubby ordered #1 combo of Beef Gyro. It was ok. The meat was a bit dry. But MINE! It was #6 combo. Forgot what it was called, but it has steak and cherry tomatoes on a skewer, grilled. The steak, for a random joint that looks like a food court, was a serious deal. mmmm!! Both of our meals came with marinated onions you can put on the meat, and rice. Onions and the steak went so well, and the rice was so yummu buttery, just right. I guess being the only two customers really help. We had great service! So to find this place, there is a parking lot on Hill st. about 650 Hill? and right across the parking lot, you can see the painted wall that says Kebab. DEELISHH!!! Come here for authentic Middle Eastern food. Just to get to the point: Order to Kuffteh that is so moist and oozing with butter, the mante that is pretty close to homemade that I have found anywhere in LA ( its a lamb/beef dumpling served with garlic yogurt dipping sauce and tomato soup dip) and a great bulgar pilaf. Amazing Turkish food, this is classic Turkish comfort food. Watch out for the peppers they are hot The meat and chicken kabob are done perfect, ask for bulgur ( kinda rice but ohh so much better). The Doner is not gyros, it's beef and is done very well. You can opt out for the saucy and vein clogging Iskender, which is a layer of pita bread, doner over it, with tomato sauce and hot melted butter drizzled on top. The lentil soup is as good as it gets and has a homemade flavor. It's very good Turkish food, you see a lot of Turkish speaking locals in this place. The owner is a legendary Turkish ex-amigo called 'the bone' for the soccer team Fenerbahce. You can see the poster of fame of his 26 year long character inside the restaurant. Amigo in Turkish soccer terms mean that he is a hardcore fan, who everybody in the stadium knows and every game he makes stunts and shows for the crowd. This place is a hidden gem! I went to resize my ring with my fiancee and we were starving. I wanted Armenian and I had seen a "Karachi grill" or something. We stepped in and the security guard told us to go upstairs and turn left... but on the stairs was a big fat squished cockroach. We made our way down immediately. The security guard said "your missing out I guess" but then again he probably didn't see the monster on the stairs. We yelped a place and this one looked decent. I was so surprised when we turned the corner into St. Vincent's food court. It was soooooo cute. Sevan is the restaurant furthest down on the right. People will try to hail you down to eat their stuff. We checked the inside first, terrified of another roachy surprise then decided to take a seat outside. The waiter explained to us that it as more of a restaurant rather than a quick place to eat and run. I ordered the doner plate and he the lule/shish kabob place. It first came with some pita, hummus, and salad. Then it was followed with our plates of rice, meat, tomatoes, and spicy onions. The bulgar rice is so goooood. If I didn't live so far from LA, I would probably be up there all the time trying to find gems like Sevan Garden. The place is tucked away in the jewelry district of downtown like a mediterranean food oasis along with four or five other restaurants and cafes. Everything on the menu looked so good that Fiancee and I wanted to try everything. The server was nice enough to let us mix and match combos (even though that wasn't an option on the menu) so we could sample a little bit of everything because we are gluttonous slobs. Before the main event, we got pita and hummus. The hummus was nice and creamy without being heavy, and the pita was thin (I don't like when the bread is too thick). When you bite into the pita, you get the usual softness, but you get a little crispiness at the end that tells you it's really fresh. The salad that came with the combo was very simple, but very light and refreshing - more so than other places that drown their salads in dressing. In all, we tried the doner, lule kebab, chicken kebab, and shish kebab. Again, a half order of each. On suggestions from other reviews, we also tried the bulgur rice with one of our combos. The doner is the best I've ever had. Some might think it's a little salty, but when it's sliced so thin the way it was, the crispy meaty crust you get combines perfectly with the savoriness. The lule reminded me of a spicy version of beef koobideh. Usually when places serve koobideh, there's so much of it, one can easily get flavor fatigue, but with the lule kebab, the spiciness adds another layer of flavor, which I really liked. The chicken was surprisingly moist and had decent flavor. The shish kebab was also nice and moist. Only the last piece at the end was a little dry, but I think that can be forgiven considering that 99% of the meat on that plate was spot on. Also, you should try the bulgur rice. I don't even think it's really rice. It looks like couscous, but it's 10 times better than the rice. The service was very friendly and helpful and the prices aren't bad. For two combos with four kinds of meat, salad, rice, hummus, and pita bread it came out to about $25 with tip. Not too bad for a belly filling excursion. BIG PICTURE: truly a hidden gem--good food, decent prices in a colorful alleyway in downtown Me and a friend came to St. Vincent Court on a Friday at lunchtime, and decided on coming to Sevan. In case you've never heard of St. Vincent Court, it's a great little alleyway with a cobblestone street nestled underneath the buildings, occupied by small Armenian, Persian and Turkish restaurants/shops. Sevan is right at the end of the alley. We both had the Doner plate for $10.99 plus tax. They were generous with the meat and it came with white rice, salad, hummus and pita. I was happy with my plate, but my friend said the meat was a little bit dry. It's not the fanciest ambience inside, but it has a lot of interesting photos and Turkish newspaper articles decorating the walls. It sounds like it was great before cuz they used to have chairs outside on the cobble stone street, but apparently the city is preventing them from continuing that tradition. My first time trying Turkish-Armenian food was interesting. I walked past this place 4 times before wandering into the juice/snack bar portion of the address. Nobody spoke any English, so I let the random dude in a sweatshirt take me deeper into the bowels of the building. What can I say? It was an adventure. The first thing I noticed was the all-male patrons. I came from Bunker Hill so I was in my power suit. That drew some stares. Or perhaps it was the fact that I'm a little Asian woman. I can't complain because I did my share of looking - Turkish/Armenian guys sure are cute! I tried the Lule plate on the recommendation of a friend. I have no idea what I ate, but every part of the meal was delicious. The spices in the kebab and even the salad were pleasing. I'm definitely open to trying more things on the menu! read more

Today I led the lunch pack. I've been meaning to check this place out since it was by another yelper as a downtown place to get middle eastern/armenian food. I usually will not take a group of non Armenians/Middle Eastern folks somewhere that I haven't been because I would have feel responsible if the place did not live up to my standards. But I went against my own rule and luckily it worked out. First off, they get minus 1 point for bad address/directions! The address listed on yelp is 621 S. Broadway, which is a clothing store. We ended up next door in a Mexican restaurant when I saw one of their delivery guys wearing a shirt that said Seven Garden. We asked where this place was....which he led us through the back door of the Mexican restaurant, which led to a hallway that gets you to Sevan Garden (based on the physical address) The best way to actually get there is off of 7th street between Hill and Broadway in the St. Vincent Alley, they are the last restaurant. They have a basic menu (see below for a link) I got the kofte plate. Which came with a salad, a side of hummos, and a choice of a side. (fries, rice or bulgar pilaf) -1 Point for the salad. The starter salad was an iceberg lettuce, a few slices of roma tomato and a lemon oil dressing. I know they could do more with the dressing, so they lose a point for lack of creativity with the dressing. The kofte plate is 5 smallish seasoned grilled ground beef patties. The meat was moist and mixed in were chopped onions, and some other spices I couldn't quite identify, allspice maybe? But it was very mild, enough to know it was there, but not overpowering. Two of my 5 were a little pink but next time I know to ask them to cook mine a few minutes longer. My colleague also ordered the same dish and said hers were cooked all the way through. So it could have been a fluke. I ordered the bulgar as my side dish, and honestly if I could go back and just get that as a meal I would be happy. It was so good, it reminded of a dish my mom makes with bulgar, green peppers, onions and tomatoes, but with stewed beef. This tasted just like that w/out the beef, it also has a mild spicy kick. (they get one point back for this one) The hummos was mediocre. Not enough of anything to really tickle my taste buds. I would have liked more garlic and lemon. (I think that may be a theme for me) If you haven't been out this way or are looking for a new spot to try a different type of Armenian/Middle Eastern food I would check this place out.. Summary: 1) Get the kefta kebabs or lule kebabs. Actually, get one lule kebab and 3 kefta kebabs (a half-and-half according to them). 2) Get the bulgur wheat over the rice or fries. 3) Be patient, kebabs take a fair amount of time to be cooked right. 4) Sit outside, where it's as quaint as anything else in downtown LA. This places makes the best kefta kebabs (spiced minced beef patties) and lule kebabs (long pieces of spiced ground beef patties) in Los Angeles. They are an authentic Armenian restaurant serving a ridiculously good manti (open-faced ravioli noodle with small balls of lule kebab, sided by garlic yogurt), which works best as an appetizer between 4 members of your party (or 2 if you are both very hungry). I realize why people rate this below 5 stars. They are dumb and do one of three things: 1) Order the chicken kebab. It's not minced or ground so it's less flavorful (no spices in the middle) and it's not as fatty (so it's less dry). Get the ground/minced beef plates. 2) Worry about service. Real kebabs actually take this much time to be cooked right. You know how long it takes to make a dry, bland cafeteria kebab. If they were slow, the food wouldn't be crisp, but the kebabs have a great first-cut. 3) Complain about environment. It is open 9am to 5pm, so you can't go at night. The sunlight hits the outside seating quite well creating a relaxed atmosphere. At the end of St. Vincent's Court (entrance on 7th), you get a comfortable air as well (as long as no one's smoking). You don't need vegetation to be relaxed, just light air with good sunlight and wide umbrellas. Kebabs: Their kebabs are their 5 star dish. A slight crispness on the outside makes for a fresh first bite. The meat is soft without being granular, which makes for great consistency. That's what you're supposed to look for in all ground beef grilled dishes: snap on first bite, spiced all the way through, smooth but solid texture. Sides: They're 5 stars as non-main dishes (which is better than appetizers that act like main dishes). The salad is light and tangy, which stimulates the tongue. The hummus is garlicky and small with warm bread. They are small portions so that you have ample room for the kebabs. Plate additions: The plates are all complemented by julienne carrots/onions (garnish, not cooked with meat) and your choice of rice, bulgur wheat or fries. Get the bulgur wheat; similar to couscous and mixed with bell peppers and onions, it is the perfect secondary item because it can be eaten on its own to start and adds to the beef in the dish when you play the middlegame. read more

We both ordered the beef Gyros which were really tasty and enjoyed the salad, hummus, pita bread and french fries that also came with the meal. The price of the meal was also very affordable and the service was great. Tucked away in an alley deep in the jewelry district is a group of restaurants along a cobblestone street. All of the restaurants in St. Vincent court have cute European facades with outdoor seating under umbrellas bearing a strong resemblance to a movie set and Disneyland. For those who know Downtown S.F., it's a lot like Plouf on Belden Place. Most of the restaurants in this alley are Persian, and we ended up at Sevan at the dead end of the court. The food here is pretty standard. You can get Gyros, Kabobs and salads with sides of dolmas, hummus, pita etc. I settled on the Gyro served with hummus, salad and bulgur. The salad was pretty bland, but the flavorful thin slices of the Gyro made up for it. By far my favorite part of my lunch was the bulgur, which was a spicy, nutty side dish that was more reminiscent of couscous than tabbouleh. I loved it, and I could have easily passed on the Gyro to eat this alone with a salad and hummus. I think I'd like to try some of the other places in this alley before I come back to Sevan, but it was such a surprise to come to this unexpected little place, if you haven't been here you've got to check it out. read more

There's nothing like a warm and tasty plate of Manti for lunch. The dish resembles a micro tortellini, each laid out open in a honeycomb formation filled with seasoned meat. It comes with a garlic yogurt seasoning which is to be liberally applied and savored. If you've never had it, most definitely stop by and try. So my girlfriend and I stumbled upon this place while walking thru our new neighborhood. Walking up 7th towards hill we find this small alley way that runs thru the St. Vincent Jewelry center. WHile its a small food court its kind of cool this little european vibe going on in the middle of downtown LA. So we walk to the end of the alley and finally decide on Sevan. The gentleman that comes to take our order is the owner. He is extremely friendly and helps us with our order giving the recommendation to try the Chicken or Beef Kabobs. So we order one of each and have to say they are equally as good. The hummus is amazing and it was our first time having bulgar which was super tasty. The prices are reasonable and service was great. Oh my gosh, I am gushing about this place. I noticed that quite a few of you yelpers had given this place good reviews and an ample amount of stars; I thought I'd check it out. I'm glad that my friend and I had lunch here today. We walked from the office and arrived at 11:30 which was perfect because no one else had arrived for lunch yet. I ordered the combination Kabob plate just so I could sample more than one of the meats. Each meat had its own tasty flavor and was very tender. The meat came with a side of rice which was very fluffy and tasted like it had been made with a bit of chicken stock or broth. A little dish of fresh hummus came with our order with a small basket of fresh pita bread, which we shared and we both enjoyed. By the time we left at 12:30 it still was not crowded on the inside. However, on our way out of the restaurant there was a large lunch crowd sitting outside watching the big HDTV they had set up outside for everyone to watch the World Cup as they ate. This place is located in a little alley just off Hill Street right in the middle of the jewelry district and the locals that work around there definetly know about. Now on to the food, the place really is some of the best middle eastern you will get in Downtown. I have been there on several occasions and everything I have had was good. Finally had the occasion to lunch at this hidden Turkish gem downtown. It would be worth it just to visit the historic St. Vincent Court - it doesn't hurt that they happen to serve the best and most authentic Turkish cafe food in Los Angeles. It's not quite as good as what you would find at myriad local spots in Istanbul, but it's not far off. And eating outside in St. Vincent Court, in the shadow of imposing One Wilshire, you can easily imagine you were dining in London or Paris, except neither of those cities have buildings so tall as to let the sunlight bathe in at such an angle as to remind you that you can only be in the Southern California sunshine. Don't they know how much business they're missing not being THE late night spot for a kabob. As it stands now, only a lunch joint, so do your next jewelry deal over a nice cup of Turkish coffee amidst the muted sounds of downtown at midday. I really sugest this place if you are tired of the usual, I been tryed the chicken kebab, the shish kebab, the doner, the avanar and also the keftke,and to tell the thruth, all of them are delicius, but ask for a combination plate I think that is the best recomendation! This restaurant is a family business so all of the people working there are pretty nice, specially Sevan. The only thing is that on lunch hours wich is between 12:00pm and 3:00pm this place gets really bussy and you are going to have to wait several time for your food till it gets to your table. oh! and the parking lot as you must know on downtown is very expensive so I thing that is one of the things you have to deal with. read more

Probably wouldn't do it at night though. This place is all the way in the back, not sure if it's a restaurant or fast food, but it's one of the 2-3 that actually has indoor seating (read: away from the dumpster) The bf and I split the combo which include swarma, chicken, kebab and I'm not sure what else. The chicken was a bit dry, but overall, thought the food was better then expected, and the rice was as good as the guy claimed it to be. Definitely get the rice instead of the fries. For whatever reason, I really liked the little serving of hummus, wish he had given refill on that.
