Sesame Donut - blueberry cake donut with no visible blueberry!
    Kim R.

We've been disappointed the last few visits. The cake donut selection hasn't been as good, and the donuts themselves just aren't as good as they used to be. Today they were somewhat dry, tasting a bit stale. The blueberry cake donut only had a couple visible blueberry bits. Bummer

Sesame Donuts appears to be the same company as Mr. Maple Donuts. I could be wrong, but the similarities are uncanny (selection divided into "fancy" and "classic" varieties, the same pricing for dozens of each or for a "half and half", what appears to be the same font on their signage, several varieties called the same thing and having exactly the same appearance). With that said, Sesame has food items that Mr. Maple doesn't such as "kolaches" and "croissants". Sesame has a large selection with more cake varieties than others, is clean, and is brightly-lit. Service is prompt and friendly. The quality of their donuts is pretty average...nothing outstanding, but nothing terribly bad. The parking lot for the shopping center in which it resides is small and tight, which can make for a frustrating experience.

Yesterday my wife made breakfast at home instead of picking up. Bacon, eggs and coffee (for the adults of course). She said she needed me to pick up something else...doughnuts. I was ok with that. Picked up 6 "Tiger" doughnuts, also known as maple. I was able to turn one into a "Pouser" Maple Bacon Bar a la VooDoo Doughnuts. I wish that Donut Day was closer but it worked in a pinch.

Stopped in the other morning for the first time to buy a couple dozen for my team. My team absolutely loved them and were chomping at the bit while I took the photo to start enjoying. The gentleman behind the counter made us feel like we were regulars. I am usually nervous of new places (my autism) but he made me feel at home. I unfortunately didn't catch his name, next time. Now to the donuts. ADDICTIVE AND MOUTHWATERING. I have never had donuts so good. If I could buy them everyday I would. I am in love with this place.

We live in an odd part of the world. Hillsboro has great food but this isn't it. I like--what I call this style--classic donuts. I grew up around these types of shops. The smell of yeasty goodness would foretell the sweet surprises inside these utilitarian Formica boxes. I have to allow that I suspect strongly these donuts were made this morning. Fresh donuts are what heaven is about. But, fried food being what it is, doesn't do well with long float times. These were flat-out stale. A better shop might not have considered it acceptable and made an early, then later batch. The assortment looks familiar enough; a good thing, but I don't think they would pass a blindfold test against 7Eleven. They are open 5 am-10 pm to get your sugar fix on.

Donut are good. The cinnamon twist is my favorite. Some of the flavors they sell are a little weird.

Hillsboro finally has it's own donut shop! They're located in the Cornell Square shopping mall near Burgerville by the Hillsboro Airport. They offer donuts, donut holes, bagels, croissants, tea, coffee and free wifi. The bright pink decor is upbeat and friendly. The donut selection includes bake and raised donuts, crullers, and fritters along with some seasonal and local variations. We enjoyed this family chain's offerings at their 185th store, so we're excited to have one closer to home.

Grab an egg pancake and throw meat mix with little cheese then toss some potatoes and white bread on the plate. Done. No cooking! A real omelette will be eggs in the pan and whilst cooking put the meat and gobs of cheese in. Fold over half and let the omelette finish cooking capturing inside the egg mixture in one item with cheese melting inside. The coffee is not impressive. Self serve from a push top brewed an hour or more ago? The Peruvian coffee had no flavor strength. Unless you order espresso drinks. Lots of tables and seats. Some high tops and outdoor picnic tables. No real character unless you enjoy industrial settings, in an industrial park. I think they get a large crowd during the week business hours where everyone has to be back at work in 30-40 minutes. Don't recommend.

If I wanted a frappe I'd go to Dairy Queen. Yes, I'm a Navy Vet and a coffee snob. if the person ahead of me in line wants more than a little cream in their coffee my head starts to hurt. I'd love it if they had a separate line and seating for normal folk who just want a coffee of the day. But it is what it is.

I have been looking for a decent breakfast/brunch place close by but so far no luck there. I am still recovering from renal failure so my mobility is severely limited. I travel mostly at the pleasure of the Veterans Transportation Service or Trimet Lyft. Today's Dr appointment finished up sooner than expected so I had some time to kill before the van returned to take me home. So I fired up my tablet and took a look on Yelp to see if there was anything of interest close by. Enter Insomnia Coffee. Lots of positive reviews. Right around the corner. So... off I go. I an a US Navy brownwater sailor. We drink coffee that tastes like coffee. No additives. None. Not even cream or (gasp) sugar. So when I told the barista [HA! The person who pours coffee into a cup] that i wanted a cup of coffee black I got this sort of deer in the headlights look. What? ...I'm sure she was thinking... no Madagascar cinnamon? no foaming goop? no stale crouton crumbs? no pumpkin pie spice? Ummmm seriously? People want their coffee to taste like pumpkin? Yikes. No Miss... just a cuppa Joe. Just like my first heart throb, Anna Mae Bullock....strong and black. And I have to say, insomnia delivered. Not a bad cup of coffee at all. Although I didn't really want to hang out there since it appeared that I had zero in common with anyone I saw there... hogging the comfortable looking chairs. So I had it in a paper cup, to go. Now I have a "thing" about drinking coffee from a large, ceramic mug.... I loathe tasting paper in my coffee and yes I can tell it's in a paper cup even blindfolded. but I digress. They did have a whole display area of decadent looking pastries and not the tiny, overpriced, bogus looking stuff you see at Starbucks. Not that i would ever go into a Starbucks even to use the rest room. They had several pies that made my mouth water and some gooey breakfast glazed things that would have seriously spiked my glucose. so I reluctantly passed. Perhaps next time :)
