I've been shopping at Sephora since they incarnated into the United States. My first Sephora was the three level one in San Francisco. Skincare or "Well Being" was on the third level, bottom floor, very cozy and professional, this I will never forget. Top floor was all cosmetics or "Color" as it was once known. Right smacked in the middle at street level entrance was Fragrance. There was an escalator and elevator that took me to and fro, from level to level. Sephora San Francisco.
The second one became a favorite due to its locality as I live in Southern California. It was in Allure magazine, this specific Sephora. There used to be a "Fragrance Organ." Yes. A Fragrance Organ.
I used to shop here when it was downstairs right in front of the carousel, a few doors shy of Gap Kids. That's how long I've been shopping at Sephora. Way before the rewards and freebies. There are the oldschool Sephoranites and then there are the others who caught on a bit later. And of course new fans that are generated daily due to the fact that Sephora has grown exponentially.
There was a magical thing about exclusivity before Sephoras were poppin' up on every corner. Many things have changed, obviously, since then. However, Sephora South Coast Plaza will always have my heart.
The makeup artist named Luis Najar has provided exemplary service since I shopped at the Sephora in the very late nineties. I remember him wearing what the employees called a "costume" that was a suit-like thing that zipped up. Years come and go and Luis Najar is still the number one person to visit at this Sephora. He knows what's up as he's O.G., and cares greatly about his customers, or as Sephora has since coined, "clients."
Luis. An exceptional artist, now known as the PBA or Product Beauty Advisor. Basically it means that he's extremely well versed in "Well Being" or Skincare, "Color" or Makeup Artistry, and Fragrance. He is only available by appointment so you gotta call ahead to get a piece of him and his precious time and trust me...he's worth it. He "gets it" and knows what's up, what you need, what is best, and listens with great patience.
The million and one changes that have happened to Sephoras have been almighty and great. The one thing I'm not too fond of is the Makeup Forever "boutique" that's situated inside of this Sephora. A bit on the snobby side, always pushing their brand, and taking away from the spirit of Sephora. I love the products but the service can be much better and tailored to customer. It's almost an ostracized part of Sephora and seems disconnected. When I buy a product that's Makeup Forever, I check out in the "regular" line. The cashiers on staff are super nice and I'd rather them bag up my goods than the snobs who are looking to sell their wares at Makeup Forever. Selling is different from servicing. When one services well, the products will sell.
Sephora South Coast Plaza...it's been a pleasure watching you blossom and grow from the yesteryears of being in Allure magazine in the late nineties. Fast forward fifteen years later and here we all are...Sephoranites. Sephorians. Sephora. Changing the face of cosmetics retail in less than two decades. Happiest Birthday to you. And I miss that cumbersome Fragrance Organ for some reason! Funny and nostalgic at the same time. read more
