Okay, never in my life did I think I'd WANT to review Sephora - and especially this location. But here it is - I had a really big, professional meeting to attend about a month ago where I wanted to look my ultimate best. I wanted all natural makeup that looked flawless. I've been told by my friends that my makeup can be too much some time and that it's cake cake cake(d) on too much for a meeting of that caliber. Therefore, I went in with the mentality of "spare no expense, just make me look damn beautiful". I explained this to a girl who greeted me and she recommended I meet with "Carmel". After about a 15 minute wait at the makeover counter, Carmel appeared. She should've had angel wings, I swear! She KNOWS her Sh!t, seriously. She was able to find me the PERFECT foundation that matched my skin to the T. She gave me a lesson on how to apply bronzer properly (she even let me videotape this)! She was patient, super sweet, and can make you look like a queen. If you go there, do a before and after! It was great. I took off one star because other than her, I loathe this store. It is insanely overpriced and CROWDED as if they were giving out free food in that b!tch. Where do all these flock of rich women come from? I don't get it. Anyways, go see Carmel! I am never shopping at this store again. The employees act is you are invisible or bothering them with a question. I walked in looking for a Clinique pressed powder and was told "we don't carry that kind anymore" and she quickly wanted to walk away. When I asked if Clinique had an alternative - she responded that they were against the wall and walked away. Rude and unhelpful. Stores wonder why they are losing business to Amazon - well, this is why. From now it's Ulta or Amazon. read more

It is a busy store and the woman who helped me was very attentive to getting me a makeup artist and helping me shop. The makeup artist put false lashes on me that were not sized perfectly however they did stay on the entire night. NEVER listen to the advice the people who work here give you. They don't give two licks about how the products affect your skin, they just want to make a sale. I went in looking for a brush cleanser. A woman and man who worked there pushed on me the Sephora citrus brush cleaner. I told them that I was very concerned about the oil because I usually breakout when I use ANYTHING with oil. The guy told me not to worry because he uses it daily on the most sensitive of skins and they've never caused any problems. He also said that once you spray it on and rub the gunk out, the oil "evaporates". He literally said "evaporates." WELL! After a couple of days, I started breaking out with huge cystic zits! I quickly returned the product (it's been three weeks now after I returned it, and I have grown 11, YES ELEVEN, cystic zits on my face. And I usually have clear skin!), and as I'm returning it, the lady at the counter tries to help me find another brush cleanser. She looks it up, and shows me this one she says it's oil free. I was like, "Can you show me the ingredients?" When she does, it literally says that the ENITRE thing is made from oil products. Then she looks at me and says,"Are you sure you're allergic to oils? Like ALL oils?" YES GIRL!!! THAT'S WHAT I'VE BEEN SAYING AND I'VE HAD MY SKIN FOR A COUPLE OF DECADES NOW!!! The people who work there don't know JACK!!! Don't listen to ANY OF THEM! read more

I love Sephora, but the staff at this store is really annoying. You know most of the time when you just want to look around and no one to bug you and then everyone is bugging you? Then there are times when you actually have a question and you can't find anyone? My experience was the latter. Actually, I found sales associates but they were all doing their makeup in the mirrors in the store. So I finally find what I'm looking for and then approach the checkout counter where there are two sales associates just standing there chatting. I reach the counter....and they both LEAVE! So I stand there another a minute and one came out from the back room and almost walked right by me. "OH, did YOU need help?" Um, yes I did. I'm sorry for wanting to spend money at your store! Let me start with I love Sephora! It is this location in particular that has had a negative impact on my love of Sephora. The employees are usually amazing and helpful. The manager, Claire, and store director, Christine, are extremely unprofessional and rude. I loved walking over to this store because I live close and now will never enter this store again- unless Claire and Christine leave... maybe then. The other employees are always friendly, but Claire called me a liar about an email receipt (which as we all know Sephora does) and then her manager also was extremely rude via email. If anyone wants to see my email correspondence with Christine- contact me and I will gladly send it to you. Claire- I couldn't use my cc because I didn't sign the back (I just activated it that day due to the whole Target issue). I wanted to leave happy (without product) so I told the manager I felt they should offer cards bc... I could show in my emailed receipts that I used that card here (it has the same last 4 digits and my name). She said that isn't possible unless I went to, 'some Sephora that does not exist.' What? No, it's right here... I wasn't being rude, I was making a suggestion. You say, 'I will suggest that to my boss,' not call the customer a liar. Before that she was scolding an employee on the floor and when I asked for help acted like I was interrupting. I have NEVER lodged a complaint, but thought she was so rude I would. Christine then emailed wanting to confirm Claire said she would accept my card. I am so confused why she would even lie about this... it wasn't even what I was complaining about. I said no, she never offered and no response. So I checked back and got a rude email in return. I was just asking... She said she offered a complimentary consultation and acted like she felt that was sufficient to alleviate the situation- but I said no thank you. If you go to Sephora you get these offers all the time or if you spend $50. I never use them, so I said no, but thank you for the offer. Honestly- this was so weird. I have pledged my undying love to Sephora. This past weekend I encountered some customer service issues at my usual beautification store and I headed to Sephora - just to check things out. I was helped by a little cutie-pie named Janet and she was a wiz! She helped me find the right products for the look I was trying to create. She was patient and informative and she was on the same wavelength with me about everything, which is rare because I'm very particular about what I put on my face. Sure, Sephora it's a little pricier, but I'll happily pay more for better service and a wider variety of products. Their customer rewards program is better too, with better gifts. I NEVER write an update review, but this was just so absurd I just had to. Let's just start off by saying that EVERY time I've come here, I feel so out of place. So lately I've been very interested in purchasing bare essentuals and after looking it up online, I realized I didn't know what color my skin tone was. I decided to go to Sephora during my lunch break and when I walked in, I was nicely greeted by this girl on the side trying to advertise some product. I told her I was only here to ask for advice on what product to use for my skin color which resulted in her having to go find a beautician to help me. Thus, while waiting for this beautician, the girl who'd been standing by the door clearly had no idea how to make small talk and had merely greeted me not expecting to have any form of more in depth conversation. Words to the wise, I'd train your employees to be a little more social instead of feeding them single line phrases to memorize. After being helped by the beautician, I got some laminated neon colored paper. The beautician who helped me mumbled something I couldn't quite hear. Something about a free sample?? I have no idea. I decided to ask another employee. And let me tell you, this employee didn't even do as much as look up and respond to me. All she said was "give it to the cashier" and kept walking. When I got the cash register, I handed the girl the neon slip. She took the slip then literally looked at me like I was crazy and tapped the card on the counter. I stood there for a good couple awkward seconds not knowing what the hell I was doing when I finally decided to just leave it. Sephora is evil. It is evil because everything in here is something that I really need in order to stay this cute! I come here when I am in the area, and things are pretty easy to find. I like makeup so when I do come to Sephora, I usually know what I want, and staff are always helpful about finding the appropriate products and letting you try them out. To qualify this, you should note that some staff, mainly make up artists, are not Sephora employees but rather representatives of the brands that they are working with. This is not a bad thing, and in my experience these reps aren't going to try to throw one over on you by only pushing their products. Just ask lots of questions. I work in the loop, so this location is great. Love it! Definitely sign up to be a beauty insider; it's Sephora's version of a punch card. I saved up my points and got a sampler of travel sized Laura Mercier products. read more

This is make up heaven! "are you finding what you're looking for?" chirped a sweet voice I look up and see this young lady smiling, and I grimace and she goes "awww! can I help you find something?" I mumbled 'not likely' ... and lay out my tail of woe. She couldn't have been more helpful - or more sweet. tale of woe: I'm a redead. glow in the dark - no face if I don't paint one on ... redhead. I'm also an OLDER redhead. Mascara? yeah, please! Stores stock black ... or black/brown, or an array of 'fun' party colors .... none of which did anything to 'compliment' my skin tone. Lately, I've found that even brown black / black brown (depending on the manufacturer) REALLY looks harsh on my skin tone. (I take off my glasses to illustrate my point) I want to enhance my eyelashes - not look like I'm trying to pick up "company" on the corner!" A little bird had told me that Sephora had more browns in their store, so, I went to see if they were right. Color me happy. this young lady made my day. Sephora has a gem in this associate! Sephora and its amazing selection of beauty products tends to be a weakness for me. I'm a Sephoar if you will. How can you not be when surrounded by makeup and fragrances galore. However, this Sephora doesn't do it for me. Sure the staff is helpful, a little overbearing at times and the location is great. What kills my enjoyment of this location is lack of goods and horrible layout. It feels like I'm a hamster running through a series of mazes to find the Benefit products or the wall of fragrances. It's just confusing and non-sensical at this location. I experienced the lack of goods. So I see you didn't have any Benefit Talent brushes and you looked in the lower drawer. Thanks for nothing literally. So, you direct me to stores far from State Street: smarts you have them! Instead of being a quick errand to pick up a makeup brush, I ran over to Macy's Benefit counter and picked one up. Sorry, this Sephora doesn't do much for me. Went in on a Tuesday night (12/15) and again got the same poor service. Asked a worker there for help about a certain makeup brush and she was so non-perplexed about it I might as well have talked to the wall. When I did find it, she claimed "Oh we do have it!" And the scurried off to assist an older white woman. When I entered the store, I was greeted but never asked if I needed assistance. Ironically, 10 mins later the door greeter was happily chatting up another woman while putting eyebrows on her. Ladies who are African-American...stay away from this store. I'm a product junkie and I personally don't wear lots of make-up, but I am a huge fan of it! I waltzed into Sephora one afternoon to kill some time and what happened? I bought lipstain and gold eyeshadow shimmer. The staff at this location is hella-fun and really knowledgeable about their products. That really helps and shows dedication. Knowing your product and what drives customers is so key in selling, I was sold! I like the fact that there is the make-up booth to try on just about anything here! fantabulous. After earning the VIB card last time I went in I got to go get my makeup done so I chose Valentine's Day for my girls night out with friends. I scheduled an appointment for 6pm. I didn't request anyone but I totally lucked out and got Alexis again who helped me with my brows last time. We talked about what I was wearing for the night and the colors I wanted to pop. I told her how I wanted a smokey eye but with pop of the green from my shirt. Also I wanted my cheeks to be contoured. I'm definitely not great at contouring. She brought over a great product that I hadn't heard of that had two colors a contouring and a highlighter. Not only did she choose all the right kinds of makeup and make me look beautiful but she was so fun. We chatted the entire time which was like 90 minutes. You know the drill at Sephora, a makeup emporium with most mid-tier brands under the sun. You've used Sephora's Color IQ, a device that scans the surface of your skin and reveals the right foundation, concealer and lip product. You're probably even a Beauty Insider, receiving a name-brand birthday gift and earning points toward free products with each purchase. (And if you're not, you should be!) What about the Block 37 location specifically? Since the State Street Sephora tends to be busy, I've realized the need to be especially proactive at this location. If I want help, I ask a sales associate, dressed in a mod red and black tunic, if someone's available instead of waiting for a volunteer. If I want a makeup tutorial while I'm trying new product, I ask the associate to show and explain the technique instead of quickly going through the motions (e.g., their approach to contouring, how to apply under-eye concealer, etc). Despite the fast pace, I've noticed associates will slow down if asked! Three and a half stars, worth rounding up because the makeup recommendations are generally spot-on. read more

Holy crazy grail of beauty. I love spending time in Sephora - twirling glittery eyeliner, testing lotions on the back of my hands, fiddling the pretty makeup tools. If I had $1,000,000, I'd spend a chunk of change here. But that's the problem. Not with this Sephora in particular, but all of them: it's just so expensive. I can't spend $60 on foundation, or $21 on eyeliner, or $38 on mascara, I just can't. I have relatively good results with cheap drug store make up (save for a few special items), so I can't bring myself to actually BUY anything here. The things I do actually spend money on are skincare products. They're not any less pricey, but I see the value in a wonderful Murad day face lotion compared to Pond's (which I still use at night, btw). They usually have a skincare pro on staff, so if you need something she can help you figure out what's right for your skin and budget. For example, I wanted something to shrink my occasional zit, and she literally walked me to the aisle, picked up a tube, and handed it to me. "You don't want anything else," the beautiful-skinned one told me. I believed her. read more

Sephora is a "one stop shop" for almost all of my beauty needs. Now that I am a "professional adult", I have been required to purchase make-up and other various beauty items. I love that Sephora carries so many quality brands, (my favs are Smashbox, Urban Decay, Nars, Lancome, Carol's Daughter) and the sales staff really know their stuff. This location has "Happy Hour" Friday's 4-6pm, which allows you to get a free "eye make over" or "lip make over" which is a great time to try out new products before you head out after work. Their reward system is great too- sign up, and for every dollar spent you get a point, points mean free cosmetics. Samples are freely given here, which I love, 1. to test out new products and 2. for my gym, travel bag. TSA cannot object to my sample of moisturizer! The worst thing about Sephora is that I could spend my entire paycheck buying things I don't need/would never use. I would not say that the staff is "pushy" but they certainly want to make a sale, not that I blame them, times are hard out here. read more

What a waste of time. I bought a $70 foundation at a different and better location. I was going to exchange it for a different shade since it seemed to look too light for me. No one greeted me or even approached me and every time I tried finding someone to help every employee seemed to rather walk away or pretend to be busy. I understand that the store might've been a little busy but I was standing around for at least 30 minutes with no help! I ended up giving up and returning the foundation. Very disappointing. Definitely go to a different Sephora or be aggressive when asking for help because the employees don't pay attention to you. read more

Well, I enjoy Sephora, and usually have a good time when I'm in there. This morning while getting ready, I don't know if I was worked up or what, but while giving my after-shower hair a normal comb-through, the comb just kind of broke in 4 parts in my hand. Weird. (Maybe don't know my own strength.) So after my mani on Adams, I walked north. Passed a CVS, passed the huge multi-level Ulta, passed Walgreen's, and decided since I'm a fan of Sephora, I'd go check out the new one on State St. Well- they have perfume, makeup, skin care, bath goods, and a couple hair straighteners and barrel brushes- but not other hair grooming tools. Booooooo! I must have circled each aisle 3 or 4 times. And not a single worker said "Ma'am, you look lost. Can I help you find something?" So I left angry because I didn't want to backtrack all the way down State Street again. Whatevs- mental note- don't go here for hair care items. read more

I'm not sure if I want to spend my money with Sephora. Entering this store made me feel uneasy. There was a lady in the store who seemed a bit different. The employees continued to follow her around the store and ask her if she needed help. I think it was obvious that they wanted to make sure that she didn't steal anything. Not only that, I could hear the employees' conversation about her. They communicate over their walkie talkie of your presence in the store based on how you look. They treat their customers as if they are shopping at the dollar store. Given that these prices are through the roof, everyone should be able to shop without feeling hounded. If you guys are worried about thieves, maybe you should monitor the store in a more discrete way. read more

The gals here have always been real friendly and sweet. No complaints~! I also love that you're able to try a sample of anything priot to purchasing. Another beauty store (ULTA) does not practice this and it's disappointing. Who doesn't want to TRY before they BUY?? Especially when it's pricey stuff... this isn't $7 dollar Cover Girl... Let me take home a dang sample when I'm paying 30-50 bucks for most things in the store. I have been a Sephora lover for about 10 years now. I was very excited when I found out this location opened just a couple blocks from my office! I can stop in on lunch and pick up the beauty staples I need. I was looking for Peter Thomas Roth moisturizer and a very helpful sales associate was able to show me other products in the PTR line. I also picked up some SPF 45 face powder. I know that stuff will come in handy during the hot summer months and I will not look like a grease bomb while protecting my fair complexion. The store is immaculate since it just opened. I'm sure that will change with time as more people shop the isles. The store layout is organized well and I was able to find everything on my beauty check list. I will have to show some restraint since Sephora sucks me in every time. You did have the fragrance I wanted, and we spent some time experiencing other fragrances as well!! So nice to have a person who is super helpful and willing to accomodate. This Sephora has good customer service I told the employee what I was looking for (loose glitter pigment, holographic/3D qualities, finely milled) and she recommended a few different brands for me to swatch. I ended up picking out Too Faced's glitter set which was $24 for four eyeshadow/lip glitter pigments ( reddish pink, silvery which reflects pink, gold, and dark silvery grey) AND Too Faced's infamous glitter glue. My stops in the Block 37 building keep getting worse, and let me say...ingenious for the people who marketed makeup and dessert, steps within each other. A makeup junkie and foodie queen's greatest dream/nightmare.... The ladies at Sephora State are completely sweet, very knowledgeable of their products, and ALL the lines and limited editions coming out. This is pretty comforting especially when you can come across MUA's at other counter who don't even know the products of their one line. I had my first Sephora experience in San Jose, putzing around with my friend Dahye . We both decided to get mineral makeup at that time, and that's what prompted me to stop into this Chicago store, I was out of the Prime Time foundation. Greeted by the nicest woman, explained what I was looking for and had it in my hand in less than 5 minutes. I love that about this store, they are incented to HELP you ! Then...I decided to ask about a few other things, namely a RED lipstick that looked good on me. We came up with two, one for day and one for night. She also recommended a clear lip liner, and then referred me to a gentleman who helped me with an eye cream (icelandic, oooooh, and it feels cooling on your eyes!), Total bill= $170 (sorry honey, good makeup costs good money). This place is great. I love the little checkout area that is lined with grab-bag kind of decently priced goodies. The employees are a bit pushy, but I just wear my headphones and do my thing. I was here on a Friday and a sign said that from 4-6pm there was a happy hour kind of event with Smashbox....it was 3pm when I was in the store and I was not planning on sticking around.
